Reporter it took firefighters three minutes to pull him from the garage, the 25year veteran suffered burns on his hands, face, back and legs. The study goes on to look at adolescence, as well, an concludes time spent with parents, not just mothers, can keep a teen focused and out of trouble. The authors of the study point out they arent saying mothers dont matter but that we need to better understand how and why the relationship matters as much as it does. Thats a commentary on the justice system. You learned a lot by being in. How did that change. We realized we are in prison and incarcerated incarcerated. They learn from their mistakes. Bad people do bad things in prison. Not violent and what will draw the defenders. They put them in prison for 10 or 15 years. I think its wrong and the system has to change. The only way is to change the laws. In other words, why didnt it occur to you . When you are a Police Officer or a correction official, when you focus on the job you have you dont think about the consequence to your families. You dont really think twhoopz this guy after he is convicted of a felony . His personal and professional is annihilated for the rest of his life. You never think about that. It has nothing to do with you. Its the system. One of the issues you are on is solitary confinement. It ought to be mandatoriy that every jail and prison official should have to spend 72 hours in the hole to see what what its like. I spent 60 days. Two months in solitary confinement. The terrorist wing in the colding center. I can tell you that you lose your mind. We do this if we do it for National Security reasons or threats to the facility or staff, i get it. To put young people in solitary for institutional infractions is stupid. I have to ask you about your relationship with Rudy Giuliani through 9 11. He said you were like a brother to him. Now as you write, the two of you dont speak. What happened . We created distance when the federal investigation began. We distanced ourselves to keep him out of the mix. I never heard from him again. Just going back to that day, we knew that we had options, but the only option we ever saw with our faith was, if our child only had nine months to live then we were going to give him nine months in the womb and let god decide once the child was born. Derek, john paul i guess, had three experimental surgeries after he was born. At what point in that process did you turn to your faith and start to see the benefits of prayer . You know my parents have always been very religious, and because of my parents, my upbringing was faith. And i knew that i could rely on god, because god has been with me throughout my life. And john paul when he was born a priest said to me you know what let god do what needs to be done for this kid. And you know what . Hes a miracle and 20 years later, what else can i say . Its black and white, you know . Hes outgoing hes got the best penalty. We just fell in love with you in the commercial break. And i was going on and on about your outfit. But you know john paul you learned a lot from your parents about faith. How have you implemented it now that youre an adult in your own life . I just try to pray every day and i just basically try to thank god for saving my life basically because if it wasnt for god i would not be here today. And i think that we all need to have god in our lives, no matter what religion we are or however we are. We all need to have god to come into our lives and help us because god is really our only friend. And he needs to be with us forever. Dr. Koenig, let me turn to you, because i know youve done a number of studies about the power of prayer. What have you found . Does it heal . Well you know heres an example of the power of prayer and weve done a lot of studies, and there has been a lot of research from all over the world that has looked at the role that prayer and religious activity what role that plays in a persons health. And it does seem to help people to have hope gives them meaning and purpose, helps them to overcome depression, which is very common when you have to go through a lot of hard experiences. And religion and god seems to make a real difference in peoples lives. Theres just no question about it. Doctor what do you tell people who, though believe that prayer can ultimately heal you without turning to medicine and things that they can get from a hospital or a doctor . What do you say to those people . Well tamron its a tough thing to resolve when somebody says that you know they want to stop their medication or they dont need medicine. But it really works best when religion and medicine go together. Its a whole picture, where were spirits, you know were social and were psychological and were physical and you just cant separate all those apart. They all go together. John paul before we let you go, youre in college right now. What do you want to do when you get out . I really dont know yet, but im thinking about the priesthood. I want to become a priest. I think thats really what i want to do right now. Wow. I think, you know because god has saved me so let me give something back. You must be very proud, mom and dad. Dont bring the giant bunny cake thats going to steal the thunder of the host. But also, if they dont ask i mean, if the guests dont say can i bring something, is it okay for the host to say, hey, would you mind also bringing that fantastic pie you made last time . Is that okay . Thats the key. So you dont want to have them bring the main course, obviously. You dont want to ask them to make something theyve never done before. But if its something you can kind of feed their ego a little bit, Everybody Loves your salad. Could you bring that . We have a table full of lovelies. Yes, we do. We have addi who is so stinkin cute. Along with mom susan, and dad mike. Susan of course, is one of our producers on the show. Okay. So lets pretend look at her. My, addi okay. Sometimes kids need to be distracted. Thank you. Is it okay to give a phone . An ipad or something just to keep thank you. Keep her occupied . Is that okay . Heres the thing. Parents may do without iphones and ipads at the table for all of recorded history. Exactly, exactly. So although its a nice, easy thing to do, id recommend against it because youll be going down a slope that its hard to turn back. Mmhmm. Theyre going to want it the next day. Should you have kids at the table in general . Addi can always come. Or should you have a separate kids table where they can do their thing and draw . With a baby as cute as addi, i dont know how you separate yourself, but for older kids i think it can be a great option especially if youve got multiple children. It gives them a nice chance to bond and a good chance to have some adult time. What do you guys do if addi has a little freakout . Probably just walk away from the table. I wasnt quite sure. Okay. What about the passing thing . Yeah. Youre only supposed to pass to the right . Yeah, this started because the guest of honor would always be seated to the hosts right. So the guest of honor would get the plate first. Thats where it began. Oh. Where you are, to my right. Where i am to him. So were all guests of honor. Youre my righthand woman here in this case. Okay. So the other thing is when you pass to the right, it gives the person the opportunity to grab with the left and then serve themselves with their right hand. If theyre righthanded so it makes it a little easier. Anybody here lefthanded . Kate . Kates not. What about dishes and such . So washing the dishes, certainly i think everybody should take turns clearing their own plates. You dont want a mass exodus where everybodys going to the kitchen. By the same token, you should really have everybody chipping in. Exactly. What about the washing of them . You know, this is a tough thing for the host, right . You want to be present for your guest. But at the same time you need to be clearing the table. You need to be keeping that kitchen clean for the next course. Right. So id say if you have a helper, have the helper come in and do a little bit of washing with you. What about dessert . Should you serve dessert, like right away . Or should we get up and get coffee or do you just bring it right on . At a meal like this you need some digestion time. Right after dinner is a great chance to do your egg hunt, to do a little walk some sporting activities. Have some fun. Work off the food. And then come back. And if youve got somebody thats got a super sweet tooth have little dishes of jelly beans around so they can feed themselves. Today were asking the question, does prayer work . The today show surveyed over 1,500 people, and more than half of them say they pray. And nearly 70 of those who do pray say they do it every day. But does the same go for kids . So we decided to send our good friend Jenna Bush Hager out to find out more. Hey. This was if you. I had the chance to sit down with some very special kids. And i asked them if they prayed and whether they consider themselves spiritual. Lets just say they had a lot to say. We have a problem, he says come. Come to me as you are. I pray five times a day. Its a way i worship god. I feel more spiritual when im meditating. Reporter for so many a relationship with god or a deep spirituality is an important part of their lives. And modern science has taken notice. Lisa miller, a Columbia University psychologist and author of the new book the spiritual child has spent over a decade researching the impact of religion and spirituality. Here we have maps of the human brain. And what we can see here in red are all of the regions of the brain where there is a thicker cortex in people with a strong personal spirituality. It doesnt matter what religious denomination they are. Reporter the cortex is associated with i. Q. The thicker, the better. A thinner cortex is associated with depression and alzheimers. Who benefits the most . Kids. Studies show theyre 40 less likely to abuse substances and 60 less likely to be severely depressed as teens. If they have faith or are spiritual. It can be allah, god, the universe, but some type of personal relationship with a higher power is more protective against Mental Health problems and suffering than anything known to the medical or social sciences. Reporter and miller says prayer plays a role. So how can we is prayer part of your daily life . Yes. Prayer is a way to communicate with god. Its something essential for me. When you pray to god, its not something that you have to have something in your head but basically have god there all the time. Reporter raise your hand if you think you can be spiritual but not religious. Mmhmm. Kind of. Im spiritual but i dont consider myself to be religious. My father is jewish and my mother is catholic, but i dont practice religion in any way. I meditate. Sometimes i speak to god. And i dont even know if i believe in god. So its spiritual, but its not organized in any way for me. I am also not very religious, so i actually find to get through times at school, you know, i love soccer. When im playing soccer i think somehow that helps me clear my mind. Reporter so would you consider yourselves spiritual . Yeah. Reporter anybody else want to comment . Yes. So my religion, islam and us muslims pray five times a day. Before we pray, we do, like, a spiritual where you do like a wash before you start praying. Its kind of like overlap for us. Reporter whether talking to god or finding your own personal spirituality, modernday scientists now have proof of something our ancestors may have always known. Prayer can help protect our kids. Praying five times throughout the day reminds me why im still here. When im meditating i think about life in general. I feel secure. When i pray, i pray to god because he is the light into my life. You know, kids are so sweet. It was amazing. And one of the little girls maddie said she was being bullied at school and she, of course, prayed and it helped her get through it. She asked her mom if she could be baptized herself. Wow and it shows that having faith or being spiritual can help guide you. And its a place to take whatevers ailing you. Great. I like to crouch, the funnel. Got to have the funnel. Its an information to the ear. Get down try to listen to things. You passed from middle school. I get my notebook out write anything thats funny. I get a lot of ideas. Were you popular in school or no . Was i popular in school . I would say i wasnt the most popular kid. I had a good group of friends. It just wasnt really important to me.
