State republican lawmakers have called to clarify the language of that freedom law making it clear that businesses cannot deny services to gays and lesbians citing religious beliefs. Now with arkansas governor refusing to sign that states version of a bill unless changes are made, this is quickly becoming as we head into 2016. This morning, the battle between religious liberty and gay rights is already shaping up. The 2016 president ial race. Wednesday, just before Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchinson decided not to sign his states current version of the religious freedom bill. Former first lady of arkansas and likely white house hopeful Hillary Clinton encouraged him to veto, pleading it would be unfair discrimination against americans. In 1993, it was her husband, president bill clinton who signed a federal version of the state law currently under fire. But as hutchinson noted, times have changed. Uber issued a statement saying the behavior in the video was wrong and unacceptable and we appreciate the nypd investigating the incident. When they were arresting him for the murder of his friend, susan berman. They also say he was on the run. And he was fleeing a life in houston that had already started raising eyebrows long before this hbo documentary put durst back in the headlines. Robert durst was the kind of celebrity in the nine years he lived in houston, giving autographs and greeting curious neighbors. Im adam clyburn. Good to meet you. Not guilty. Reporter in 2003, durst was aquilt acquitted of murdering morris black in nearby galveston, a case dubbed texas trial of the century. Its a weird eerie celebrity. Reporter this investigator him for years, hired by blacks family. You will find people who want to be photographed with him, who would want to be around him, almost like billy the kid. Reporter dursts habits drew attention, urinating in public, dressing in womens clothes. We kind of nicknamed her Dorothy Durst after the pseudonym he used in galveston. Here in the hotel police say he was getting ready to run. He had maps money and a new untraceable cell phone possibly to flee the country. If that was actually the case, he made a mistake. A big one. The bill shows durst used the hotel phone twice to check his voice mail. Thats when police say they tracked him. As authorities were closing in friday night, durst was wandering the streets of the French Quarter when he walked up to the mahogany jazz hall. He just kind of came over and in kind of a weird voice said id like to come in right now, but i cant. He pulled back his jacket and it looked like he had a semiautomatic black canvas holster. Reporter his gun. He showed you his gun. Yes. Reporter by saturday afternoon fbi agents were staking out the lobby of the marriott when they spotted durst near the elevators and arrested him. The manhunt was over. In addition to the gun and the cash Authorities Say they also found a fleshcolored mask with salt and pepper hair in his hotel room. Now to a legal dispute thats going to get people talking. A family suing after a volleyball coach benched a young player and the league wouldnt let her switch teams. Theres our National Correspondent peter alexander. Reporter audrey demetri who earned a coveted spot on the Club Volleyball team. But weeks later the 16yearold says she was abruptly asked to leave the team. I was very confused devastated, heartbroken. Its a huge part of my life. Reporter when she requested a move to another League Officials told her no. Frustrated that she was being stripped of any chance to showcase her skills for varsity coaches and College Recruiters audrey and her family took their complaint from one court to another and sued. The suit says coaches made the subjective determination that audrey did not have the requisite skills and accusess the league of taking arbitrary, capricious and tyrannical. It felt like they took something away that they didnt need to take away. Reporter League Officials declined nbc newss request for comment. But in a letter to audreys family they insisted making an exception would set a bad precedent. Should the league allow players the ability to move teams when they are unhappy with the amount of play time they are receiving, we would be overwhelmed with requests, they wrote. Audreys family is not alone. In 2013 a pennsylvania father sued his sons High School Track coach for 40 million after the teen was cut, claiming it badly damaged his sons chances of landing a college scholarship. What if you have different beliefs beliefs from your own family . I sat down with a christian mother and her muslim daughter to learn about their path to personal peace. How do you describe your faith . Its my life p. Its my core. I was really searching for god and a connection with god. Patricia was raised in the church. And she passed on her christian beliefs to her daughter alana. But 15 years ago while in college, alana decided on convert to islam. Your daughter called you up and says i have an announcement to make. What did she tell you . She said im becoming an orthodox muslim. It was probably the quietest phone call weve ever had. Alana began practicing her faith not long before september 11 2001. I was terrified. Think thats what must have been the day when i recognized without a doubt we have a situation here a situation in the world and we have a situation in our house holds. Every conversation about faith became one of confrontation and animosity and ugliness. For ten year mother and daughter did not speak about their difference in faith. I think it was when we both decided in a arguing and debating was not the working. Eventually they realized their relationship could not bear the weight of the elephant in the room. For me it was when i realized that my mother is hurting and i need to care. I began to hear in my spirit what if im wrong about how im living out my faith . What if the lord is saying to me let go. Watch what i do. Thats when we started to turn the corner. Pa stlashthey decided to write a book together undivided, a conversation about faith lover and understanding. Have you come to accept that your daughter is muslim . I have come to respect that she made a choice. Shes on her own faith journey, willie. And god will decide how that ends. That was a liberating moment for me when she told me that she had not accepted my faith choice, but my right to choose. Alanas husband and children also practice islam. Im wondering what you would say if in 10 or 15 years one of your children called you and said, mom, ive decided to become christian or ive decided to become a buddhist. Im not going to lie and say that that would be easy for me but i know now how important it is for a person to really feel like they can choose their own faith and their own beliefs. What is both passover and easter reminds us that god has the last word. The truth always conquers falsehood, love always conquers faith, life always conquers death. That gives inspiration to those who are trying legitimately to use religion as god intended it. And there is also a theme in both that there is he redemption at the end. Its a great way to make them healthy or keep them out of my office. Lets talk about beginner enter immediate or advanced. The beginner is someone getting started, they want to walk or run. They want to do more. The intermediate is somebody who is kind of doing a 5k. They want to do a 10k. They are looking to do more. The advanced is what you are doing, a Half Marathon in april. Maybe a full marathon. That is somebody who is well into it. For somebody getting ready to start. Talk about the beginners. What are the common problems they may encounter. You see behind us the achilles tendon a common overuse injury. I get them all the time in my office. What happens is it gets worse and worse. If it changes the way you run, you definitely need to see your doctor. You dont want it to get worse. If it changes the way you run, you are overcompensating go to the doc . Yes. What about overuse injuries . This is actually a running graphic from our hospital for surgery. We have people come in and run and sometimes walk. If theyre overstrideing their foot is lending out in front of them too far. They put more load enforcement on the knees and hips. I get asked this all the time is there a right or wrong way to run . There is not a worse way. Quickening your cadence makes it quicker. What about foot strike . Im not a believer in short strike. I think landing in the right place. Moving over to the intermediate athletes. What w are the biggest issues . The biggest this inc. Is shin splints. Theyre an achy shin. If it tend to hurt right here on the inside part of the bone. Interestingly the most common reason natalie, is if your feet are falling too much in the middle. That helps a lot. Another problem you see as well is dehide drakes. People experience cramps. Muscle cramping is with intermediate runners. Reporter but for 6yearold mark fontana, this time of day was particularly difficult. Mark is autistic. He was diagnosed right after he turned 3. He had regressive form of autism. Reporter but that was far from the greatest hurdles the fontanas faced. He would compulsively run away, outside into the street. He would run and try to jump in any pool that he saw, even though he couldnt swim. It was absolutely terrifying. Reporter marks disability was isolating. Marks not getting invited for play dates. He doesnt use speech to communicate. So that creates a barrier. Reporter a barrier felt by the entire family one that impacted an important part of their identity. We stopped going to church as a family. We felt like we were disrupting the service. We felt like we were a burden on our community. That was really tough. Reporter but they found hope in an unlikely place and a most unlikely face. The fontanas learned about a new program at guiding eyes for the blind that utilizes dogs meant to use their skills in a different way. Dogs are going to make the biggest impact if they love the job that they have. Good boy. Reporter Caroline Sandler and her team have now trained and placed over 60 dogs with families like the fontanas. Its 100 success. It really is. I watch children who are normally held by the wrist, parents so stressed. I watch these children kind of dancing next to their dogs and theyre happy to feel free. Reporter contact between children and their dogs has a calming effect. Outside children are tethered to their dogs to prevent them from running away. For mark fontana, working with echo has been lifechanging. Mark exhibits a confidence that i never saw before. Reporter and a sense of acceptance he so separatedesperately needed. When echo came into the school to be with mark 20 30 40 kids hi mark. Hi mark. You could see the smile on his face. Reporter teachers and therapists have noticed improvements, too. Eyes on torre. Hes the first san jose Police Officer to be killed in the line of duty in more than a decade. Those officers are lending their time and energy to allow san jose Police Officers to pay their final respects to johnson. Santa clara county supervisor david cortesy says support from other agencies has been a real boost. Theres somewhere in the neighborhood of 800 active officers still left in the city of san jose even after all the patrician and cuts and problems we have been having. They all need to be down at the arena today. And obviously, a city of a Million People and a county of 1. 8 Million People will not be safe unless we can back fill somehow those troops. Soft spoken good sense of humor. A Memorial Service this morning bringing in top state leaders and Law Enforcement agencies across the country. He was very dedicated, but more importantly, though this was a person who has promise. Good morning, and thank you so much for joining us on this special edition of nbc bay area news. Im laura garciacannon. Im sam brock. We are now one hour away from the beginning of the Memorial Service for Michael Johnson. Right now, the procession carrying officer johnsons body will be leaving darling and Fisher Chapels in los gatos. A live look from overhead this morning. The procession actually will pass through three cities on its way to the s. A. P. Center in san jose. You can see all the people that have been gathering outside on your right, gives you an idea of the map of the location of where the procession will actually go. A closer detail of the route. Officers will escort his body up santa cruz avenue in los gatos which will turn into winchester. In campbell they will head east on Stevens Creek boulevard, and then they will head north on monthgomery street that turns into autumn and that will take them to the s. A. P. Center the site of the Memorial Service for johnson. This will all lead to rolling road closures along the procession route, and traffic will not be allowed to pass the procession itself on city streets. Officers are encouraging people to use Public Transportation during this time to try to ease congestion in and out of the area. A lot of people interested in seeing todays procession of course. Just a little bit of background. Officer johnson shot and killed last tuesday while responding to a domestic call. A 14year veteran of the San Jose Police department and only 38 years old. So young, so much life left to live and so many people will be paying tribute out there at the s. A. P. Center. Its starting in los gatos where officer johnsons memorial procession will head toward the s. A. P. Center in san jose later today. We see so many chp officers lining the streets, ready to follow that procession up through campbell up to san jose itself. Through the streets. Of course every bay area Law Enforcement agency has reached out to sjpd to find out how they could help in the ceremony honoring the memory of Michael Johnson, and many of them pretty much all of the 13 santa clara to be manning the streets today while this ceremony goes on. Exactly. Within the county as well theyre having officers from throughout the area trying to assist, to even give those that are even closer in the San Jose Police department a chance to actually go to the memorial Service Today at s. A. P. Center so they can pay their respects. So hard losing a coworker, but one you work tirelessly next to and so tragically as well. About 4,000 people are expected to attend that Memorial Service. Again, its going to start in about an hour at 11 00. We want to take note that we are trying to be respectful of the family. There are certain parts where they will need their moments of grief and were going to most certainly respect that as often times youll see the chopper shot widen out. Well bring you the majority of the memorial itself. Its pretty well set out, the itinerary of how things will go once they arrive at the s. A. P. Center. Its a big loss not only for the community but you cant even imagine for the family themselves. Yes the families, of course and people coming out not just members of the Police Department and family but folks who have never met officer johnson before. Youre seeing an incredible coming together from all facets of the bay area today. As we honor this individual who is described as brave and sensitive and dedicated to serving the community in which he lived. Thats the lovely thing about it as well getting to know the officer a little more than just a face just the badge number. The person himself. Officer johnson was only 38 years old. He had been married not too long ago. From what i understand, they were married in a civil ceremony but planning more of a larger celebration this summer. So our thoughts and prayers of course go out to his grieving wife. Plan to raise their family in san jose as well. So right now, were looking at an aerial perspective of the darling and Fisher Chapels at los gatos. Thats where the procession is going to begin momentarily. Were waiting on that now and we have a reporter there as well. Christie smith is in los gatos. An emotional day, just steps away from where you are right now. Absolutely. And it looks like that procession is leaving as we speak. We just heard some of the engines start up. So im going to go ahead and just let you take a look and listen at whats happening here. They just are taking off right now. As we arrived, we started to see more and more people showing up with flowers, signs of support for fallen san jose Police Officer Michael Johnson. Some of them carrying American Flags, in tears. Just saying they wanted to come out and pay their respects, to honor his sacrifice. Weve seen them coming from places like oregon some of the Police Officers who take part in this from Contra Costa County all over the bay area. Were seeing people out here carrying signs and flowers saying they had to be here. They heard the story, watched it unfold. Weve also seen people with their children telling us they really wanted to be part of this really wanted to be part of the final route to say goodbye. Officers have been standing by. One told us he was here for hours overnight, was leaving here to go straight to the s. A. P. Center. To honor his friend Michael Johnson. Traffic, as you mentioned, in los gatos, campbell and san jose, will be impacted as the rolling road closures happen. Assist point people following and watching as they go down the street here and we have seen officers lined up down the street, motorcycle officers were told at least 200 of them as well as patrol cars taking part. So again, many people here in los gatos saying they wanted to pay tribute as well. And really pay their respects to this officer and his sacrifice. So you can see it going down now, as they head down the street to campbell towards san jose, the s. A. P. Center for the service that begins at 11 00 a. M. You can see now theyre on their way. Okay thank you very much. As we talk about tributes pouring in right now to officer Michael Johnson. All of the things this community has done just in the last week after the tragedy last tuesday. It has been everything from lowering the flags at half staff to black stripes on the badges of Police Officers, to schools lowering their flags, to vigils condolence notes, all sorts of expression from everybody in the community. Immediately, outside of the San Jose Police department in downtown san jose you just saw the multitude of flowers, candles, well wishers, just leaving little notes, mementos many of whom never met officer johnson. But he was born to serve and protect, and thats what he did, and this is how a Community Gathers behind him to thank him, and to thank his family as well. This is the ultimate sacrifice that he gave. One that no one expects but one that no doubt family members as they send their loved ones off to work every day, fear in their own lives. Its wonderful to see the tribute. No doubt well see a lot of American Flags, as we do in the lower half of the screen lining the route as they make their way to the s. A. P. Center. Yeah it seems appropriate to mention at this point that the family understands that perspective as well you dont have to be a member of a Law Enforcement agency or Police Department is understand the pain theyre going through right now, and they said earlier in the week that we appreciate all the thoughts and prayers we received. We take comfrtd in your sharing of our pain and your recognition that Police Officers lay it on the line day in and day out as they work to make the world a better place. And colleagues of Michael Johnson all say that this was an individual who specifically wanted to serve his community and he did so in several capacities within the Police Department. Wanting to make his immediate surroundings a better place and a safer place for the people who live there, and theres really no more noble gesture or profession than doing that. Very much so. To kind of get to know officer johnson, unfortunately after the fact, a little more, just oza community, he was known for his calm demeanor very warm presence and he even responded to the victims he served with an incredible level of sensitiveitysensitivity. He never complained, just did his job. He loved his job. He grew up in the south bay, moved here, he was young, around 11 or 12 years old, went to local high schools as well. Were learning more about his family background and Public Service and working in Law Enforcement was kind of in the bloodlines. His father had been had worked for the Armed Services as well. And ultimately moved to become a member of the Calaveras County Sheriffs Department and so he was kind of following in those footsteps. Moved to san jose in 1988 and was a local kid, went to gunderson high school. A local kid, rode a bike and delivered newspapers back for the mercury news. Thats really his first job. Gunderson high school in san jose graduated in 1995. Captain of the chess team in high school. No doubt, had some talents there. Had a black belt in jujitsu. Became a teacher at a dogeo as well. Absolutely. This is someone who demonstrated by all accounts from all of his colleagues and fellow Police Officers extreme dedication to everything that he did. And you talk about that sensitivity, he was a Field Training officer, and he helped to train young recruits and found himself oftentimes in sense situations and most of the folks who spoke of johnson and his life talked about the fact he had a way of listening to people, a sense of trust and confidence. His own selfassurance helping them feel more comfortable and he was very skilled at defusing tense situations. Exactly. Look at all the people who are growing, the crowds growing with all the flags lining the routes that the procession is taking place. Eventually making its way as we said to the s. A. P. Center in san jose. Where thousands no doubt, will be gathering as well. To pay tribute to the fallen officer. Chriskris sanchez has been live since very early this morning. No doubt you have seen the crowds grow out there, kris. The crowds are growing and the number of uniforms were seeing is remarkable. And as you look at that chopper shot over the procession route, you can see the number of people who have turned out to provide their support and to show their gratitude for the service of this officer and the rest of the department that he served so proudly, and when he arrived here, he will be received by hundreds of his own officers, san jose Police Officers also officers from as far away from dallas. We saw a patrol car from dallas. Well let you look behind us. The Fire Department has two of the engine ladders to put up a giant American Flag. His body will come through here along with his family and beyond that, a sea of blue. All of the san jose Police Officers who were able to be here today to show their respects, and with such heavy hearts, because they know that on any given day, on any given shift, that could have been them. They are here to pay their respects and as they are on duty, as you mentioned, there are officers from all of the different agencies within Santa Clara County who are patrolling the streets of san jose. If youre in san jose you might see a sunnyvale patrol car or a milpitas patrol car in your neighborhood, and that is the reason why. We have seen a number of dignitaryies as well, but really the person that we talked to this morning that put it the best was the chief, larry escobell. Hes not a man of a lot of words. Hes a rather quiet leader himself, but he talked to us about who Michael Johnson was and he said he has a poignant story his wife shares that hes going to share inside but he said he wrauz a quiet leader he was unassuming. He was approachable and respectful, and as you mentioned, didnt extend just to his officers that he was training out in the field. That was also how he treated his community, which was his community. Its where he grew up and where he was raised, where he had his paper route, throwing out the mercury news as a young man. He also talked about what really is the most emotional part of this day for him. I think its all of this. It really is. Its seeing his car, speaking and talking to his family seeing the respects of his fellow officers not only within our department but throughout the country. I think everything about this day that is very important for me for all of us. And that was the chief. He said really his foremost thought is not only of the department but really of the officers family who has asked for so much privacy. Theyre grieving so heartily that initially they were going to come out and make a statement to the public, and even that was too difficult for them today. But the chief said hes going to be with them today and will provide as much comfort as possible, and that really seeing all of these moments that youre going to see throughout this morning, the procession and the public joining in the officers and all the different uniforms the American Flag seeing officer johnsons face on the electronic billboard outside the shark tank are all moments that will stay with them and hopefully provide them some level of comfort. Again, officer johnson had a wife and still, as laura, you said so much life to live as my little girl said he never even got a chance to be a dad. Thats really sad. Officers lined up as far as you can see. This is called the honor cord. What theyre doing is lining up shoulder to shoulder, and they will do that as far as they possibly can. At this point, we are at the corner of santa clara and autumn street, and were several blocks away from 87th but spokesman Enrique Garcia said if there are enough officers to line up to highway 87 theyll do that. Its quite possible. Not too long ago, just a few years ago, we had a sad occasion of burying two Police Officers from Santa Cruz County who were killed in an ambush and this is the same place where that memorial happened. I asked if it was going to be a bigger memorial for, rather the memorial would have been bigger because there were two officers and honestly, it seems like officer johnson was so well respected on this force that more than one officer within sjpd said they expected this memorial today would be even bigger. So we are waiting for him to arrive, and his procession with his family. And with some of his other fellow officers and like i said, as he rolls in it will be with a tremendous amount of respect, a sea of blue a sea of other officers other uniforms from across the country. And also within the bay area as well. And the one thing that they will have in common is that they all have that black bar against their badges over their shoelds, showing that they are united in their grief over losing a comrade. Laura and sam. Okay inspiring to see. Thank you very much kris. That kind of patchwork connection and connectivity of all of these Police Forces all over the country coming to honor. Truly united. Youre not just talking about police force but you see the Fire Department the chp, the Sheriffs Department, all of the different agencies that are contributing, not only from the bay area but as kris mentioned, from across the country as well. Youre seeing patrol car driven from texas this morning. No doubt from throughout california as well. Continuing to give you a live look overhead of the procession that is now moved in to the campbell area. We saw briefly while we were talking to kris move onto winchester boulevard. Next stop is san jose. Once that motorcade reaches san carlos it will turn east in the city and head off to the s. A. P. Center, and incredible imagery there, symbolism of the fire trucks hoisting the american pellagin the air as the officers stood beneath it lining up shoulder to shoulder as kris was pointing out, from the s. A. P. Center out. They might make it out to 87 and certainly, their support goes well beyond. Look at that as well. Officers you see, and theres just some utility workers that pull over they have taken off their hard hats. Theyre holding them over their hearts. Everyone is taking a moment to stop and pay a tribute to this far too young fallen officer from the San Jose Police department. And its, of course viewed as having such gravity throughout the state, not just here in the bay area. The flag being flown at half staff at the capital. Kamala harris is going to be addressing our states attorney general is going to address everyone in attendance today and this marked the first Police Officer in the entire state of california who has passed away in the line of duty this year. Look at that tribute right there. That truly move said you when you see the fire trucks the officers, that just stop. Its chilling. Welcome back. This morning, the community honoring fallen officer Michael Johnson, the first san jose Police Officer to be killed in the line of duty since 2001. A live procession is happening right now. It left los gatos this morning from the darling fisher mortuary site. We have been following all along. Now its in campbell as it moves along the roadways followed by Police Officers on motorcycles, patrol cars as well. Overhead, we have seen firefighters standing in salute. Seen common civilians standing as well stopping taking a break, taking a moment before it eventually moves all the way to the s. A. P. Center where thousands are expected to gather for a special Memorial Service that should take place at around 11 00 this morning. Were seeing pictures from local Police Agencies as well tweeting out pictures of their participation in the event, manning the streets of san jose in support of san joses Police Officers and the entire community here playing any part they can to help honor the memory of Michael Johnson. That was a look you just saw, theyre heading right now north on winchester boulevard. Once that procession arrives add Stevens Creek, its going to turn rights and head east to the s. A. P. Center. Thats where Stephanie Chuang is at the corner of winchester and Stevens Creek. Were going to check in with her live and see how people are gathering there as well as were seeing throughout the community. An incredible response this morning, this procession has been going on now for about 20 minutes or so. It started a little after 10 00. As you mentioned, began in los gatos, moving forward and seeing Police Officers from all over the country coming to pay tribute, Community Members, if they havent already honored the memory of officer johnson at schools and at public sites with flowers and with letters and condolences and all other forms of expression. Whatever they could do. Talking about whatever you can do as well its interesting. Were seeing that every Police Department chief in Santa Clara County is actually out on patrol just so that officers from San Jose Police department could attend the Memorial Service. That is just helping each other out. Its paying tribute in a way that they can help each other out so the streets continue to be patrols should anything happen everybody is well protected, but it gives people a chance to grieve. They have not not just an officer, but a coworker a friend. Thousands of people expected at the ceremony but who knows how many countless other are on the procession route and are taking in the moment. We have Stephanie Chuang out on Stevens Creek boulevard awaiting the procession that is going to turn off right behind stephanie. We have been talking about people coming from all areas of the bay, the country. What are you seeing . Hey, good morning, sam and laura. Were on winchester before Stevens Creek about the two thirds point to the actual Memorial Service site. We have about three dozen people at least, 40 people here people from the community who said they wanted to show their support as well as members of the Law Enforcement community, those who retired, from the santa clara Sheriffs Department as well as san jose Police Officers. An American Flag out here. Were also standing out here when we caught an lapd officer who came up from l. A. Today. He had ties to the Police Department family. Lets take a listen. To tell you the truth, i would have traveled much farther for this. This is what we do out of solidarity. Tragedy for everybody in the community and everybody in Law Enforcement at large. We want to support that. It hits you doubly hard because your father was an officer with san jose, right . Yes, my old man was on the job here for 30 years and retired a couple years ago. A Second Generation tradition for our family. How does it impact a family with such a history of Law Enforcement . We take it hard. A lot of people are grieving but in the Law Enforcement family, you take it extra hard because you know the risk that comes with the job and protecting people every day. You know what comes with that. Now, here live you can see in the distance maybe some Police Lights approaching. The procession is coming. Its on its way. Really quickly, though we also spoke with someone from the austin Police Department. He came all the way from texas, and the reason is he also used to be part of the San Jose Police department. Hear what he had to say. I actually used to be an officer with the San Jose Police department for a long time. And i left the department a couple years ago. And ive been with the austin Police Department now for about two and a half years. The chief out there reached out to me and asked if i would like to come out and pay my respects and see the brothers and family i had out here. So you can hear the emotion there with these officers who feel extreme ties not just with San Jose Police but just in the Law Enforcement community, and family, we hear that word a lot today. I want to bring in before we see the procession come by paul who used to be with San Jose Police and you said you came out here because, of course, you feel so much for this loss of officer Michael Johnson. Absolutely. He paid the ultimate price, and we owe it to him for respect, and because of the sacrifice, i hope the citizens of san jose truly understand the price he paid. How long were you with San Jose Police and how does it feel to see all the support from Community Members here today . I think its great. There are many many officers from other outside jurisdictions that are here and i hope the family understands how much hell be missed and what an incredible and professional officer he was, and how he enjoyed his work. You were with the department for how long . For about 26 years. I know your wife is standing here next to you. There must be a lot of concern when it comes to family members, too, when youre in the line of Law Enforcement work. What was the discussion with your wife too when this happened . Actually it was my wifes suggestion that we stand out here today. And pay tribute. And because of her suggestion were here now and were overwhelmingly thankful for the san jose Police Officers and all men and women in uniform to protect us make the ultimate sacrifice, and ask for nothing in return other than just being treated with dignity. And paul you can shed some light on this for us. From a Police Officers perspective, were about to see right now the lights come by with the procession. How much does this mean in just a little bit . Right now, it means everything. Sums it all up. This is it. This is the ultimate sacrifice. And we owe it to him, and everyone wearing the uniform, to pay our respects. Okay thank you, paul. I really appreciate it. Paul used to be with San Jose Police for, you heard it 26 years. Were now preparing to see the procession go by. Lets take a moment. Crowds that are gathered. This is along winchester boulevard. Theyll be turning now to go continue their journey along towards the s. A. P. Center. You know what was moving as well to see, as we took the aerial overhead shot, traffic on the opposite side as well. Completely coming to a halt no matter where they were. Pulling aside. People just literally taking a moment as we heard from the bystander bystander. Just taking a moment to pay a little bit of respect. Of course remembering officer Michael Johnson today. Just 38 years old. Killed sadly in the line of duty. The exact same impression. Just so quiet and calm on the roadways. You hear really from our perspective the roaring of the engines, the passing of the motorcycles, but not talking. Just observation. Which is so interesting because we are in a busy hairied life all the time and for people to stop what theyre doing and, you know, he paid the ultimate price. Everyone has said it out there. Its so moving to see all of the officers and different departments that have come from throughout the country. We have a few scattered reporters talking to i talked to an officer from dallas one from austin one from los angeles, and this is just scratching the surface because they come throughout california as well but other parts of the country, new york as well and their chiefs understand, do you need to be there . Please go and represent us. Or just you as an individual if you need to be there thats okay to go. Its one patch of street on this many mile long procession and stephanie spoke with people from all over the country. You mentioned the Police Officer from austin texas, who used to be an officer at the San Jose Police department. Such a Close Network of people. And of course the pain is felt throughout that entire network, and seeing how people in the bay area here in san jose understand whats going on right now. To your point, they understand the gravity and the import because this is something that really affected an entire community, not one specific police force or one particular city or town. Yeah we saw it. It was really immediately after sadly he was killed. The memorials growing at the site and the Police Department as well. Were going to continue to follow the procession as it moves towards the s. A. P. Center a Memorial Service will be happening with many dignitaries attending and speaking as well. That is scheduled at 11 00. Were going to take a quick break but well be right back. This morning, the community is honoring officer Michael Johnson. He is the first san jose Police Officer to be killed in the line of duty since 2001. Weve been taking live looks at the procession from overhead as it made its journey from los gatos to san jose. It passed by Stevens Creek just moments ago, and along the roult, we have seen so many people. Take a look at the live look. People standing on corners and what not, just taking a moment. Its been a somber day, and a reflective day, but also an inspiring one in the sense that every single bay area Law Enforcement agency reached out to san jose to find out how it could play a role in helping to honor Michael Johnson. And on that note now, we send it over to Michelle Roberts who has been watching all the agencies coming to lend their support on a very important day for the community. Well, sam, im outside the s. A. P. Center as officers and Law Enforcement agencies from all over the country and as you mentioned the bay area are now lining the streets. A very quiet mood out here, very somber but as everyone was arriving, it seemed like a bit of a celebration honoring the life of officer johnson, and celebrating the work that they do every day. And im here with mike mkcminamy, you came with a group. Tell me why you thought it was so important to be here. We wanted to come here to show our support not only to officer johnson and his family but also offer our deepest condolences to his organization and the community which he honorably served. This is something that santa cruz has felt in the past as you were mentioning earlier. Its bringing back the memories of loss. Unfortunately, two years ago almost to the day, we came here in a similar procession for two fallen officers. And again, like that we wanted to show our support to this organization as all these Public Safety agencies are here representing their organizations want to do as well for the community and the family. Theres been a lot of talk about brotherhood and sisterhood and community today. Can you talk about what it feels like to see the group out here supporting the San Jose Police department . Its an absolute honor to stand here among these fine men and women who so selflessly serve their communities. Its a true honor and a testament to what we do and every person thats out here is honored to be here and show their support for this community and mr. Johnson. Thank you so much, mike. We really appreciate it. The motorcade is heading our direction, and its a very quiet and somber mood as everyone waits for it to approach. Reporting live outside s. A. P. Center Michelle Roberts. As we see the motorcade approach where michelle is as well it started the journey after 10 00 this morning from the los gatos area, and we have seen officers shoulder to shoulder there at the s. A. P. Center forming kind of like a human chain, kind of a shield gathered together mourning together. The Community Mourns as well at the fallen officer, just 38 years old. Channeling their connection and you heard the word selflessness mentioned by the california state park officer. And its something we have heard from every Police Officer so far commenting on whats happening. When you have a family and loved ones and you take on a role to protect the community in which you live theres an understanding that every single day, every time you leave the house, youre putting your lives in danger and youre doing it to protect the people you care about in your community. And as one officer said its the ultimate sacrifice. A good reminder not only every single day they leave the house, but every call they go on as well. Its a dangerous world out there and theyre there to serve and protect. They give up their life to do that, and sadly, he gave the ultimate price. Thats why were paying a very special tribute. That procession is moving along and approaching the s. A. P. Center, i believe its still on san carlos but getting rather close. Also at the s. A. P. Center right now is our very own kris sanchez where thousands of people are going to attend that Memorial Service, kris and the last time we saw you, officers were lining up shoulder to shoulder outside of the s. A. P. To show their support. Laura just mentioned it a second ago as well. Yeah something that is called an honor chord, and they go shoeld toor shoulder to receive their fallen brother as he arrives here. And Michelle Roberts did a really good job of setting the scene, showing you the sea of different uniforms the people who are gathered here to receive officer Michael Johnson. But you know before that it took on the mood of we have all been to a funeral before where you have seen long lost friends maybe family you havent seen before, and there are hugs and laughter, and all of that has kind of died out because its starting to get very very real. Were going to ask allen to turn the camera around. You probably have the chopper shotads well. You can start to see the flashing lights of the front of the motorcade as it arrives at s. A. P. Arena, and its getting very, very quiet out here. Officer Michael Johnson making his way in. Lets take a listen. So they are just about a half block away. The front of the motorcade with the chp officers and the San Jose Police motorcycle units are leading the way. Officer Michael Johnsons body there in one of the vehicles and his family also behind them. It is so quiet out here now. All of the hugs and the welcome to town and the thank you for coming those have quieted down as the officers reflect on what happened to their fallen brother and as you mentioned, sam, what could happen to them anytime they leave the house, and for every officer there are dozens of family members and friends who are also affected. Were seeing officers from all range of uniforms. Were seeing sheriffs deputies we see khakis, tans blacks, blues. Weve even seen fatigues and a couple sailors as well who have turned out to show their respects, and here they are as they start to arrive. We see the Vantage Point from overhead as well kris seeing the procession move along, and you know the common day people the civilians, the us out there of our community, standing alongside, but it is something moving for certain, to see the sea of officers and lieutenants and the sheriffs deputies. Also so interesting just to see the juxtaposition of the two angles, the aerial wide effect of how this has impacted everybody, and streets that are closed down, and as you mentioned earlier, laura, people who have stommed to watch what is happening and then the mike row. The rows and rows of people standing outside the s. A. P. From all different parts of the country, here to lend their support. Both physically and figuratively. Theyre going under the American Flag. A sea of officers a sea of respect, thats what were seeing here today for officer Michael Johnson. Sadly, imagine from our perspective. Youre seeing it from overhead from the crews on the ground. Imagine the family members in the car following as well. How moved they must be at those that want to just come out and pay tribute to their husbands their sons their brother. An entire sea of people and the family has outlined all of the roles that Michael Johnson had served. They said earlier, we love you, mike. Our husband, son, brother, uncle, and hero. You cannot express how deep of a hole in our hearts were left with by his passing. And youre right. Thats the firstperson perspective inside of the hearse as they head toward the s. A. P. Center on the periphery, going in. Just the depth and the outpouring of this particular ceremony, how many people have come to witness this and to show that this impacts me, impacts you, it impacts everybody in the community. Very true sam. If you have ever lost a loved one, having the strength of all those people there, that continues to follow, and hopefully will follow this family so they get through. When you lose a loved one, you never get over it. You just get used to living with it. Its a tough place to be. But it is wonderful to see a community truly behind them, supporting them and no doubt, will continue to be. This is a family. Because we dont all know what its like to lose a Police Officer, but we all know what its like to experience tragedy within your family. Its inevitable. Theres said to be thousands of people out there. They thought at one point up to 4,000 people who would attend this ceremony. Its set to get under way, pretty much right on time. They thought the arrival would be about this time. We also want to give a moment as well. Were going to widen the shot because the family wants to have their moment and privacy to enter the s. A. P. Lending their condolences this morning. As the community is hahnonoring officer Michael Johnson, the first san jose Police Officer to be killed in the line of duty since 2001. We just watched what appeared to be the end of the procession. It started a little after 10 00 this morning in los gatos. Traveled north into campbell and san jose and peeled off down Stevens Creek boulevard and san carlos street ultimately to the s. A. P. Center which you see from the aerial perspective. Some 4,000 plus people for the memorial that should start in the next 20 to 25 minutes. So many officers going into the s. A. P. Center. They were lineing the streets there. You see in orderly fashion, but shoulder to shoulder literally. You could probably hear a pin drop as the hearse went by underneath that very flag you see waving in the wind. Just the size and breadth of the flag is enormous and the symbolism of it as well. A lot of people feeling patriotic and also supportive of someone who dedicated his life to helping those around him. Lets send it over to nbc bay areas kris sanchez who has been live at the s. A. P. Center this morning. Kris, tell us about whats in store for the service and the sentiment right now. Well hi, there. You just saw officer johnsons body, his body in the hearse passing right under the flag. Now, his family is taking a private moment with him as he is taken inside the s. A. P. Center for the Memorial Service that is to start in just the next couple minutes. And what you can see now is all of the officers who lined the route to receive him, they are now also filing in to the s. A. P. Center. Once the service is over they will do the same thing in reverse. They will come outside and line up once again in that honor chord, shoulder to shoulder to see him off on the private procession to the private burial with his family a little bit later this afternoon. And i can tell you that it has gotten very very real out here. Very somber now. All of the hellos and welcomes to town that we heard earlier, those have gone away. Today, were going to hear from a feed from inside. Were going to get a picture, a live picture of whats happening on the inside and you know there are going to be a number of dignitaries talking, including police chief larry escovel, he said the family is really at the forefront of his mind. He said he has had opportunities to spend time with them and that they are taking this loss very, very deeply. At one point, it seemed like they were going to come out and address the media so we could then share that with you, and at the last minute they said they just didnt even have that in them. They just couldnt do it. But the chief talks about what kind of person Michael Johnson was. He said he was brave and simple in the way that he lived like a spartan. He really didnt have more than he needed. He was approachable and respectful with his community as well as with his force. And the chief said hes going to share a funny story about Michael Johnson that his wife shared with him. He didnt want to give it away. Its too early but i suspect that might be one of the more poignant moments we hear inside. Lets take a listen to the chief talking about the Johnson Family today. Well its not easy. I mean we all know that. Not only did he lose his life losing a life in the manner he did, providing service for our citizens, and answering that call. So right now its the initial stage of grieving obviously, and we want to bury him in a proper manner and after that yes, our men and women, its a part of the process that were working with now in terms of grievance counseling. Its important for them for us to provide that to them to make them feel not only appreciated, but to make sure we account for their mindsets in terms of their ability to function and understand that its normal. A lot of the feelings theyre having now. And that was chief larry ekquivel, talking about the family and the process theyll have with grieving along with the department that lost an officer who seemed to be by all accounts an upstanding citizen, a true leader quiet leader and again, we see folks filing in right now, right behind me here. We see some soldiers in fatigues right now. And so all kinds of folks represented here. The chief is going to talk about that funny anecdote he got from Michael Johnsons wife, but also we might learn a little more about him. The family has been very protective of their privacy during this very difficult time and we have tried to be as respectful as possible knowing that you the public, you want to know more about the fallen hero as well. But inside the arena right now, people are seeing photos that go beyond that Police Officer shot in his uniform with his badge. Were seeing pictures of Michael Johnson as he grew up and he is a local boy. He grew up here in san jose went to gunderson high school. He had a paper route, so perhaps if you have lived in san jose your whole life, maybe he delivered your newspaper. He went to gunderson high school, as i mentioned, and his family is local here as well. As we mentioned earlier, he was married but didnt have a chance to have children. Hes just 38 years and a 14year veteran of the force. Hopefully we will hear more from chief esquivel who will share stories from the family, and his sister is expected to speak this morning and that will be nice to hear from the family. I suspect they will be overwhelmed with the show of support that is pouring into s. A. P. Center and that lines the route all the way from lose gatoes to the s. A. P. Arena. They had about a week to process all of this but as we all know sometimes when you get to the funeral is when it really starts to feel very real. So the proceedings inside are going to start at about 11 00. We will hear the always iconic Amazing Grace, and then we will get into the services as well as chief esquivel well hear from attorney general kamala harris, and hopefully from a member of the family and theyll be able to share with us exactly who mike as they call him, who mike was. We know they will miss him forever, and again, as we see the officers filing into the s. A. P. Center well remind you they will come back out, they will take some time for them to line the route once again. And send mike johnson off to his final burial. He will pass under the giant ladders from the san jose Fire Department trucks. And there will be also a flyover with the missing man formation. So all kinds of tributes to him here at s. A. P. Center. And also something for the community to see and also some private moments for the family as well. Laura and sam. Thank you very much, kris. We see all of the officers filing in now, preparing for the Memorial Service that is about to get under way. What is so touching as well is we have seen his photo where it is this officer shot. Hes very serious in it as well but the family has now made available some personal very personal photos him as a little boy, as a boy scott, and maybe some nieces and nephews as well. It brings the person the charismatic smile we havent seen a lot of pictures the family is showing right now, which is very nice because in a way, you feel like you get to know him a little better. It just adds an entirely different dimension to your understanding of whats happening. You see him as a young boy with the big blue eyes blowing out a birthday cake or with his wife whom he planned to have a child with here in san jose. Family, all of his closest friends and relatives. Just humanizes it in a way that talking about what his contributions have been and how he served san jose it just adds a whole other layer. Its really nice that we were able to see it. Exactly very nice of the family to show it. You see it you see the fun, the warmth, the charismatic smile, the personality that oftentimes you dont. Theyre the men in blue theyre out there protecting but theyre people. Theyre family members and membersf our communities, and thats why were paying a special tribute today. Our own Michelle Roberts is also live out there, near the s. A. P. Center, and its amazing to see all the different agencies that have come out there, michelle. Its really incredible. Hundreds of them lining the streets. Many of them have already shuffled inside the s. A. P. Arena. Now you can see the motorcade out here. Im looking at morgan hill san mateo, gilroy just one after another. And i talked to many of these Law Enforcement agencies who say they just wanted to be here. They not only wanted to honor the life of Michael Johnson, but they wanted to let the San Jose Community and Police Department know that this is a team effort. Were all in this together. So many people have been talking about the community and what they do every day is to protect us. So when one of them fall they say its a loss to everyone. As you mentioned, laura, a couple times you could hear a pin drop out here. It was very silent when the motorcade was going by. But earlier, when everyone was arriving, it was a joyful experience. People were hugging, saying hi to old friends and laughing because they wanted this to be a celebration of officer johnsons life. And now its the time to mourn, and its very quiet out here as people reflect and its a beautiful, sunny day, but i think everyone is just taking this moment to appreciate their jobs and unfortunately, remember the life of johnson. And they will be filing in here in just a few moments as the family has a moment to mourn in peace. Theyre entering right now, just to have a moment to themselves, but obviously, so many people here in the Community Just wanted to be a part of this. I spoke to a wife of one of the san jose Police Officers there are many wives gathered here together. They say, you know what this is something we worry about every day, when our husbands go to work. So many people are feeling this and also people who dont have any ties to the Police Department. Theyre out here taking pictures. They just want to see what this is all about and pay their respects in any way they can. Such an incredible shot here. You have the flag over the s. A. P. Center and hundreds of officers are going in. Many different colors. You have the black and blue for the San Jose Police department. But you have sailors, and you have people from all over the country as well as the bay area here to pay their respects. Well send back in to you now.
