Lets get right to our top story. Those two deadly blasts at a peace rally in turkey today and the death toll is rising this morning. Nbcs chief foreign correspondent, Richard Engel is in insstanbul with the very latest. Richard, good morning. Reporter good morning. This was an absolutely atrocious event. Young people, peace activists, students this be gathering in ankhra this morning. They were leaving the train station to gather for this peace demonstration, which there is a lowlevel conflict going on right now between the turkish government, the turkish military, and kurdish fighters. These people were coming to say that that fighting needs to end, that the country needs to pull together and, as the crowds were growing, witnesses say two explosions went off. One can be seen while people are dancing in the foreground. And some of them 100 injured were actually carried away on the peace banners that they were bringing to this rally. So far, theres been no immediate claim of responsibility, but this attack bears all the hallmarks of an isisstyle attack. The opposition parties and many of the people who were at this rally do not support the government, say that the timing is very suspicious. In just three weeks, there will be important elections in this country, and opposition parties accuse the government of not doing enough to protect them. Craig . Richard engel for us this morning in turkey. Richard, thank you. There are new details this morning about last weeks mass shooting in oregon. For the first time, were hearing just what happened inside a classroom walked in and opened fire. Those details coming to us from a man known as the lucky one. Chanel has more on that for us this morning. Yes, good morning, erica. While weve had a general idea of what transpired at that Community College in roseburg, oregon, which is a first chance to learn exactly how horrifying those last minutes were for the victims and the survivors. This morning, the most detailed account yet of what really happened inside one of the classrooms where Christopher Harper mercer killed eight students and a teacher before turning the gun on himself. 18yearold survivor Matthew Downing releasing a statement overnight saying, he was chosen by the gunman to be, quote, the lucky one, who would tell the story of what happened. Downing writes that, quote, it was about 30 or 40 minutes into the class when i heard a couple of shots fired when he walked in. The first thought in my head was that this couldnt be real. Downing says the shooter told everyone to get into the center of the room to be quiet. Then, says downing, he looked directly at me and said, hey, kid with the glasses, you are the lucky one. I will not shoot you if you give this to the cops. I stood up and he pointed the gun at me and this is the moment i thought i was going to die. O was going die. He spared downing, and the shooter asked student after student if they were religious, then shot them in cold blood. Finally according to downing, after Harper Mercer was shot from outside by a police officer, he laid down on the ground and shot himself in the head. Downings Statement Released the same day president obama visited with some of the survivors, as well as family members of the victims. We have to come together as a country to see how we can prevent these issue from taking place. Today, its about the families, their grief and the love we feel for them. Reporter protesters lined the streets, upset with his push for stronger gun control. Hes here for a gungrabbing agenda. You know, our town is in mourning. Today funerals will be held for four of the victims. Umpqua Community College will begin Holding Classes again monday, the First Time Since the shootings. Thank you. Turning to north korea now. That country is putting on a major show of force today to mark an important anniversary. And north koreas leader is talking tough when it comes to a possible conflict with the United States. Nbcs chief global correspondent, bill neely, is in the capital of pyongyang. Good morning. Reporter good morning, craig. From a very rainy pyongyang where ive just seen probably the biggest parade in north koreas history, the biggest military parade. It was undeniably impressive in a rather uncomfortable kind of way because no one does a parade like the north koreans. It is unquestionably the goo goosestepping capital of the world. Look first of all, this was a show of strength. Remember, this is an army that regards the United States as enemy number one. So this wasnt just a display of unquestioning loyalty. This was a defiant message to america, dont mess with us, dont stop us trying to develop the Nuclear Weapons that we believe are our sovereign right. That, of course, is exactly what the u. S. Is trying to do. There was also a defined message here from the man who provided over the parade, the Supreme Leader kim jongun. He said, our policies are driving the United States into a dilemma and into a corner, and i will continue to strengthen this army. So a defiant message from him. You can probably hear the troops in the background chanting because this celebration, this parade will go on here, although its slightly raining on the parade. That is certainly one thing the Supreme Leader cannot control. From pyongyang, back to you, craig. Reporting from north korea, bill, thank you. The push for a new House Speaker continues in washington this morning. Republicans scrambling to find someone to take the speaker job. So far, not a lot of luck. Nbcs Kristen Welker at the white house with more. Good morning. Reporter good morning to you. Stunned members of congress are trying to regroup away from washington. Most of them at home this holiday weekend. The name emerging as the most likely replacement for the current sharkHouse Speaker is f president ial candidate paul ryan. Its not clear that ryan wants the job. With House Republicans leaving town without a leader, all eyes are now on congressman paul ryan. The consensus candidate who Top Republicans want to be the next speaker of the house. Right now im going to make it home for dinner. Reporter the 45yearold father of three has consistently said hes not interested, content with his current position as chairman of the powerful ways and Means Committee that overseas tax law. What an absolute privilege and honor it is to chair this committee. Reporter friday it was clear he would have a lot of support even among potential opponents. If paul ryan got into the race, of course id support him. Paul would be a great speaker. I think paul ryans the right person to do this. Reporter the more conservative branch isnt total oh board. Im not committing to any at this point. Reporter this all comes after congressman Kevin Mccarthy stunned his colleagues and washington thursday by announcing he was dropping out. I think i shocked some of you, huh . Reporter he dismissed rumors that a Whisper Campaign led to his ouster. This week a conservative republican warned any candidate for leadership who has committed misdeeds should withdraw from the race, although he did not name mccarthy. Mccarthy saying that had nothing to do with his decision. No. Come on. Reporter the chaos comes as the house is facing a long todo list including needing to pass a spending bill to keep the government open and raising the debt limit or face default. A house divided but seeming to agree on one point i think the people want to get it right rather than do it too fast. Reporter ryan even took a call from his former running mate, mitt romney, who urged him to run. The outgoing speaker, john boehner, said he will stay on until an election for his replacement. Everybody is putting on this full court press, as you mentioned. Even people who are not in washington at this point. Paul ryan made it clear hes focused on the packers this weekend and his family. When can we expect a final decision from him . Reporter good question. The house will be on break for ten days. Congressman ryan will undoubtedly use that time to discuss the decision with his family, with his friends. Hes hoping his colleagues use the time to decide whether theyre ready to rally behind him. By all accounts, the Congress Wants to resolved as soon as they get back from break, so they can work on issues like keeping government funded. Kind of an important issue. Speaking of other decisions, everybody e everybody anxiously awaiting a decision from Vice President joe biden. Any word there . Reporter not yet. But look, Vice President biden, according to sources, is home this weekend his family. Im told he will hold a meeting with them to try to decide if he actually wants to get into this race. He knows that the clock is ticking. And he really only has the next week or so to decide whether he wants to get in, if he really wants to mount a credible campaign. Remember, he has a big catchup job because hillary clinton, Bernie Sanders have already raised a lot of money. He also has to play catchup in terms of mounting an organizing game on the ground. We dont expect him to participate in next tuesdays debate, but a final decision is expected within days. Well be watching. Thank you.
