How you doing . You how it feels for them to be back together after all of these years today, sunday february 21, 2016. From nbc news this is today live from studio 1a. Welcome i am chanel jones. Glad to have you with us. Its a busy sunday morning with a lot to get to. First the results of the president ial races. Donald trump with a big win in South Carolina and second primary win and then coming in second and ted cruz in third. Meanwhile sanders and clinton went into the battle neck and neck. Clinton won by six percent. We have full coverage ahead, but theres a breaking story right now. Just a terrible scene in michigan where a gunman started to shoot randomly at people from his car. Six people were killed so far and a father and a son. A 14yearold girl is fighting for her life right now. Reporter good morning. This began around 6 00 p. M. Last night. Police searching the home and vehicle where police say that they found a gun. The victims were picked at random. Were very confident that we have the right person in kus can de. We have significant evidence. Reporter as you said theyre confident that they have the right man. They would not elaborate at this point and a motive is unknown and that is the Million Dollar question this morning. Just an awful scene in michigan. Thank you. To politics now. Donald trumps big victory and now with two primary wins under h belt. It was a neck and neck race and lets begin with nbc in tennessee. Good morning. Over sniet mark rubio came here to race for a rally today and looking ahead to super tuesday. The man to beat is that billionaire and defied all odds. Victory in South Carolina this morning and donald trump is steam rolling to the gop nomination. Theres nothing easy running for president. Its tough. Its nasty. Its mean. Its vicious. Its beautiful. Going to second place is mark rubio and going the endorsement of governor nikki haley. Now the children of the reagan revolution are ready to get the leadership. And bouncing fwrak a disaster finish in New Hampshire. After tonight this is a three person race, and we will win the nomination. That race is intensifying and rubeio inching out ted cruz that fought hard in the first primary of the south that drew a record turn out. Now the battle of who can stop it. Were the only campaign that has beaten and can beat donald trump. And scrambles on for donors. Tonight i am suspending my campaign. Yeah. Yeah. An emotional jeb bush finishing fourth despite his brother and mother campaigning for him. Two floridians went into california and only two emerged. People were going to welcome on to our team. Now, we are republicans will caucus on tuesday and trump towering over vie gas and then part of the childhood there and rolling the dice and trying the regain. Lets put this thing way. Lets make America Great away. Thank you very much. Thank you very much. John kasich was not even in South Carolina last night but focuses on battles in the east and midwest. Finishing six but staying in the race. Chuck todd is moderator of meet the press. Good morning to you. Good morning. It was a huge night for donald trump and record turn out in South Carolina. There are 46 counties and donald trump won all by three. Is the nomination a conclusion at this snoint. If this were any other, thats what were talking about this morning. No one has won them back to back since 1980 and not became the republican nominee. Cruz and rubeio have sources and theres no doubt about it. Donald trump has the easiest pathd. Does it stay a three way or get down to go. The only thing that they have now is whether he can win it on a one on one. Is it enough wins to say by the end of march that it wont matter anymore. I think thats what is going to be the next ten days and this sort of fight to be the trump alternative does not sort itself out to actually create a stop Trump Movement that you can see. We have been going through this morning and theres one nugget that caught the attention. This is a question that was asked of voters, do you support muslims from entering the the United States . 74 percent said that they did. Donald trump is more in tune than anyone else. Not mark rubio or jeb bush and thats why he is out of the race. Not even ted cruz and thats what is the probably the best explanation why others have failed where donald trump has succeeded. He is dictated the the terms of the race and been the guy to be the most declarative and toughest talks whether its isis or muslims and that talk has what is animate in the republican base. It shows you that donald trump is more in tune with the Republican Party than anyone else running. By the way chuck do not go away we want to come back with you in a moment. We go hillary where she came up on top and its giving her a boost and Benny Sanders says that he has only begun to fight. Good morning to you. Reporter good morning to you. Theyre breathing a sigh of relief. The polls were deadlock and in the end its a decisive victory after losing the defeat in new hampshi hampshire. Hello. Taking it to the state. We just won nevada. It was a win who clinched earlier in the day. I you want to congratulate sanders on a hard fought race. Very aggressive, affective campaign and i applaud them for their efforts. It raises question in the states and African Americans picked them and sanders urged the supporters not to give up. I believe when democrats assemble in july at the convention, were going see the results of one of the great political upsets in the history of the United States. And there are some encouraging signs and sanders won more votes here and trumped clinton among young voters and clinton ramping up the outreach. Its not just enough to make college more affordable. You need help with the debt that you already have. It gives clinton a bump as she goes into South Carolina and super tuesday where they make up a large part. Actor Morgan Freeman doing an ad and saying that hillary always stood for us. For the supporters in nevada its about savosavoring. Reporter she will spend a million trying to reach the million that sanders made online. She has nearly twice the amount of cash than him. Thank you. Lets bring in chuck todd once agachblt you can see it in her face and she looked relieved last night and it was a solid win. How critical was this win and how damaging was it in terms of the momentum . Well, a loss her would have been that she lost two out of three and barely the one that she won was won by an eyelash. Now theres two under the belt. This was the best shot to get the mythology when theyre more diverse. Its every operation and you can bring in the same day. Its more than clinton and everything was in place for him. He out spent her and she won. Now for saernds where does he win . Its easy to see and its not more. Those are the four biggest states that won super tuesday. If you cannot win any four, she is the nominee on march 23nd. Theres a lot of delegating and she will go to june and have a lead thats not surpassed, and thats what made nevada significant. Lets look at the numbers, and i thought that it was interesting and 376 percent they won of black voters and he took the Younger Voters and 72 percent were under the age of 345. Did they have to worry about that or what did she do to target the Younger Voters . Yeah, clin dton is in an interesting spot. She is going figure out how to appeal to Younger Voters. If theyre not there, she can not win the general election. She can not shes not going to win them over but how does she become the second choice and get rallied around. I think thats a challenge for her because so far she has yet to appeal to them. Next time if you have more time how you manage to get sleep. I was watching you last night when i went to bed. Well, sleep i will sleep 2017. Yeah, who needs it. Well, the candidates are back on the stump today and jeb bush is home in florida hours after suspending the campaign during an emotional post election speech. Is this the end of the bush dynasty . Well, he began as a front runner and had the name, legacy and the money. Perhaps that was the problem. The medium of iowa, New Hampshire have spoken, and i respect the decision. Tonight i am suspending my campaign. The end came on saturday night. Thank you very much. Emotional moment for bush after the forty place finish in South Carolina. Earlier this week South Carolina governor nikki haleys endorsement signals you how it will play out. I am disappointed tt she did not endorse me. His mother telling matt lauer. There are other people that are qualified and we have had enough bushes. I am a candidate for president in the United States of america. Until he was up staged by donald trump and bush did not consider it a big treat. They were offered moments on the trail. Get back in the business of crea creating a peaceful world. At first the bush name did not appear on his post ers. Its a serious job and requires despite a 100 million super pack, money could not buy him votes. We do not have to go vote. Its all finished. The one thought to be the best qualified to run for president could not persuade voters for another bush. Thank you for the opportunity to run for the greatest office on the face of the eerparth. I love you all and god bless. Jeb bush was just out of tune with the voters. Now the family legacy is going to continue and its up to the next generation. Perhaps jebs son that holds office in texas already. The you support that jeb bush did have and the main stream voters, where do they go now. And the money. The big donors. Had he was pledding wiading wit and that money and the endorsement and i think that they had to go to mark rubio. Even though that he feels that mark rub mark rubio jumped his place and should not have been running, i think that theyre going to have to end up there. One of the top bush family members and rubeio is going to have to get a lot of experience because he has to prove that he is up to the task. Lets talk about the forecast now. Reporter tara fitzgeralds friends say she was an old soul. Very philosophical. She wanted to she wanted to know how the world worked and how the universe worked and how god worked. Reporter but the honor roll student also loved music and adventure. So her friendes say they werent shocked when she told them she wanted to try lsd during a sleepover with a girlfriend at her house. She was really into the beatles and they obviously talk about that kind of thing in their songs. Reporter this is a photo of tara taken just moments after she took the drug. The reason they had selected the night of the 10th was because taras parents were going to be gone in the morning for a sporting event for her sister. Reporter tara and her friend planned it all out and as teenagers do, they had their friends out taking photos and videos. This is some of the video taken that night. The video showed investigators how the night went from a fun, giggly high how do you feel, tara . I dont know. Reporter to this. Tara lying unresponsive on the basement floor. She was in serious trouble. But her friend never woke taras parents who were right upstairs and she never called 911. Tara died just hours later from one small dose. Taras family was heart broken and investigators baffled. It turned out tara had no idea she was really taking a synthetic drug called 25i. She had a high level of this drug, 25i. Had you ever heard never heard of it and im sure tara hadnt either. I wish i would have gone downstairs. I probably would have detected something off. I didnt because i didnt want to infringe on their space. Reporter Chuck Rosenberg said most thin sisynthetic drug from china. How saeasy is it for someone in america to buy these chemicals . Too easy, extremely easy. Somebody sits down at their keyboard, orders it over the internet and it shows up in a package. Reporter theyre then transformed into many forms, pills, even liquids. And the drugs are a lot more dangerous than they look. In fact, the chemicals are so potent, they have to handle them with gloves. The reason that detective and i are wearing gloves is if you touch it, you can absorb that and become the drug can affect you just by absorption. Reporter if i pick up that piece of paper, i could get it through my skin. For sure. Yeah. Reporter wow. That was kate snow reporting there. What do Kim Kardashian, beyonce, lady gaga and j. Lo all have in common . They all have worn clothing made by a designer from queens. His name is laquan smith but hes making a mark on the fashion world and doing it his way with his signature style. If people in the fashion industry are searching for something new and fresh, they found it here. His name is laquan smith. And celebrities like beyonce, rihanna, Kim Kardashian, her sisters, and Jennifer Lopez love what he creates. The laquan smith woman is bold, shes sexy, shes confident, shes fearless. Reporter laquan just showcased his newest line to a packed crowd at new york fashion week. He even had ipads circulating and his guests could buy pieces right on the spot. Thats major because a lot of times when you are viewing new collections and viewing the runway, pieces arent available until three to six months later. Reporter but all of this success didnt come overnight. His grandmother gave him his first sewing machine when he was 13. He was enamored with fashion, even taking his mom and grandmothers old clothes and redesigning them. I would literally, like, dissect it like detach it, take a seam ripper, open up the seams to try to understand how the skirt or how the blazer was made. That was my, you know, that was me teaching myself. Reporter laquan was rejected from the top fashion schools. I was so devastated, but at the same time i kind of had to, like, wipe my tears away and just think of a way to kind of overcome how i felt. Reporter he kept sketching, and designing, and taking gold leggings he created and passing them out to women on the streets of new york city. Next thing i know, all this gifting that i did i ended up seeing, like, lady gaga with the leggings i made, it was surreal. Reporter he continued to send out his clothes and then it happened, he saw a post on instagram of Kim Kardashian in the hamptons getting pizza. I was sitting on my couch and im, like, swirling through instagram. And i had had had already given monica and kims team a bunch of clothing and it just popped up on instagram and it was, like, oldneweverything. Im, like, this is my dress. This is my twopiece. Reporter while laquan acknowledges that celebs help generate social media buzz, he designs clothes for everyday women too. Wow. Look at look at you. Do a twirl for me. Yes, yes. Reporter he says there is a style for every woman. You can do this. Or perhaps this. His Signature Gold cat suit. You walk in the room, all eyes are on you. You are the bomb. Com, no questions asked. Reporter and remember the schools he was rejected from back in date . Now those same schools ask him to come share his story. I love i can inspire someone or inspire them by, you know, my story or by the things i create. There is room for growth and there is room for everyone. Ive been to a lot of fashion shows, fashion presentations. It was very clear, it was packed but people were rooting for him. How could you not . And his mom and his grandmother. She said, i have to say, back in the day, he said he wanted to do that, i thought, does that pay bills . Does that have a pension . I had to let him fly and clearly did you keep any of the i didnt keep any of the clothes. Some of them i couldnt zip. I was going to show you a bunch and i tried somewhere i just walked forward because it didnt zip but i love them. Arent they fun . You look good in them. Cheers. To dialen in tylan in the o, with the plaza fans of the day. I heard you two are both in the lion king in your schools. Yes. Youre both playing zazu. Yes. Youre in new york and what are you going to see today . Were going to see lion King Broadway and were, like, so excited, like youre a little bit excited to be here too, right . Like blown away that im here. Im like so excited. Even dressed the part. Thank you. Love this excitement. Still to come on today, our Favorite Group of friends back together once again. I dont play the fiddle. Thats, like our little secret. Do we have to tell everyone . Reporter jesse kavarski was taught how to look like he was playing by the pits lead violini violinist. A tutorial that you dont often get from this world class violin ist and she gave me the correct posture and alignment and how to hold a violin. Sweet little bird reporter jesses tutor, kelly hall tompkins. Eight performances a week, it is kelly the audience hears playing the gorgeous violin solos threaded through fiddler. It is a duet that i get to play, you know, with tevia speaking singing and im playing. So it is one of my favorite moments in the whole show. Reporter it is her first time in a broadway orchestra. Her first love is classical music. My Elementary School in greenville, South Carolina, took us to hear the greenville symphony at the local orchestra and i still remember hanging on the balcony and watching. I was hooked and i said thats what i want to do. Reporter and that she has. Her busy career as a soloist and ensemble player has taken her from coast to coast, and now broadway. And in a show where the audience knows every word of every song, and every note of her solos. What is it like for you to know the notes you play have such an important emotional effect on the audience . Thats really the magic of the entire experience. The actors continually tell me they feel my role as the violin soloist is another character and it feels wonderful to be so valued in that environment for what im creating artistically. That starts my evening eight nights a week. Reporter it is thrilling, honestly, to be that close and to hear it played so beautifully. Oh, thank you. May god bless you reporter for kelly, the music is always about more than just the notes on the page. In the case of fiddler, much more. She self published the memoir of her late neighbor and friend, alfred murray, a holocaust survivor and violinist, called the last quartet. My husband even said, goodness, you cant help but think there is a little bit of alfred in all of this. So i think he would have been thrilled about this role in the show. It is about being transported. Thats what a performance should do to you of any kind, of any artistic performance, it is certainly music, it should transport you and thats what my job is. Without our traditions, our lives would be as shaky as as a fiddler on the roof shes pretty good at that transportation stuff, right . Really good. If that were not enough, kelly, in her spare time, either solos or presents concerts in homeless shelters. My goodness. Wow. So beautiful. Was it just as pure and wonderful i cant imagine in person, just right next to her. I know. You can feel the vibrations, right . Just a beautiful tone. It is incredible to bring her to everyone because so many people have seen the show walking down the street, you would never guess in a million years, right . Thank you for that. Thank you.
