Let us start with our top story. Its the president ial race and donald trump taking a closer look at one of his most controversial proposals banning muslims from entering the u. S. We have new numbers. Trump trailing Hillary Clinton by eight points, 49 to 41 . Nbcs Kristen Welker has the latest on this. Kristen, good morning. Reporter matt, good morning to you. With donald trump lagging in almost every poll, his campaign is trying to turn the page beefing up his staff and now looking at the possibility of softening one of his most divisive policies. Trying to get his campaign back on track, there are signs this morning that donald trump could be backing away from one of his most controversial positions, a ban on muslims entering the United States. One of trumps policy directors now telling the wall street journal that trump would only suspend temporarily immigration from areas. That have been a major source for terrorists and their supporters. Overnight, his spokesperson denying there was any change in policy but acknowledging the need for more details. Mr. Trump is going to refine his policy putting out more specific details which everyone has been asking for, but there has been no change. Reporter trump first announced the ban after the San Bernardino terror attacks in december and planned to ban all muslims. Donald j. Trump is calling for a total and complete shutdown of muslims entering the United States until our countrys representatives can figure out what the hell is going on. Reporter the policy may have helped him win the primary but our latest nbc news wall street journal poll shows 49 of registered voters oppose the muslim ban indicating it could hurt him in the general election. This comes as Hillary Clinton is taking steps to further unify her party. In ohio on monday firing up democrats in her first joint appearance with senator Elizabeth Warren. Clinton is eyeing warren as a possible vp pick. On monday there was no sign of the policy differences that used to divide them. They were not only color coordinated but in sync delivering a onetwo punch against trump. What kind of man roots for people to lose their jobs and lose their homes and lose their life savings. Ill tell you what kind of a man. A small, insecure money grubber who fights for no one but himself. I do just love to see how she gets under Donald Trumps thin skin. Reporter now, trump lambasted that event. Hell be campaigning for the first time in the critical battleground state of ohio. Secretary clinton will be in colorado where she will unveil a new tech initiative. Hillary clintons email scandal and her response to the 2012 benghazi attack are back in the headlines and today her closest aide will be questioned under oath. Nbcs Andrea Mitchell has the latest. Good morning. Dueling reports this morning. On the House Committee investigating the benghazi attacks in 2012 while Hillary Clinton was serving as secretary of state. An issue donald trump has repeatedly raised during the campaign. The section of the 800page republican report obtained by nbc news sheds new light on the breakdown in the military response to the benghazi attacks and the failure to have an evacuation plan. Among the revelations, the report says 35 americans were saved not by local militias the u. S. Thought were allies but fled but by former military officers from Moammar Gadhafis regime. The dictator that the u. S. Helped topple one year before. Why was ambassador Chris Stevens in such a dangerous place . Hillary clinton told the Benghazi Committee last fall chris chose to go to benghazi because he understood america needed to be represented there at the pivotal time. Stevens was filling a tons p. M. , clean up after the closest aides is going to be questioned by a conservative watchdog, judicial watch, in her role in setting up the private server. A lot more to come. Thank you very much. Lets bring in nbc news political analyst nicole wallace. Nice to see you again. Lets start with what andrea just talked about. The reports coming out of the house on benghazi and as a result on the email server as well. Hillary clintons base made up their mind on this. Donald trumps base made up their minds on this. How much impin 10 00 p. M. , clean up after the she gave y youre our au revoir pretty sober and straightforward explanation for why people might find her lacking in trustworthiness when she said im careful with my words not because im hiding something but because im careful with my words. Its a vulnerability. Its a vulnerability according to the polls but big moment yesterday walking out on stage with Elizabeth Warren. I heard you this morning on morning joe saying you may break the internet with the comment but you compared Elizabeth Warren to sarah palin, someone know very well. Hillary clinton and john mccain are sort of in the political word, steak and potatoes. Substance. People who know how to govern. Elizabeth warren like sarah palin pack arenas. You dont think shell be the vp pick and you dont think she should be. I dont think she will pick her. We could be wrong. People who look at what Hillary Clintons pick needs to satisfy dont think shoring up the far left flank of the party is her task come november. Let us end on the subject of Donald Trumps change in stance on banning muslims entering the country. Is this an admission it works in the primaries and will not work in the general election . Its an admission that having a shoot from the hip, fly by the seat of your Pants Campaign is not going to get the job done come november. You still have republicans rebuking you week after week after week, you cant sign on donors, you cant sign on staff and you probably cant beat Hillary Clinton. Nicole, thank you very much. Good to see you. Theres a new twist this morning in the crash of egyptair flight 804. French authorities opening a manslaughter investigation. Nbcs bill neely has more on that for us. This morning ikea is asking anyone with a malm chest or dresser to stop using it if its not anchored to wall. The company will send technic n technicians to do the work or provide a full refund if customers return the furniture. We would like to ask as a customer to make sure that all chest of drawers are properly attached to the wall. If not, take them out of the room. Reporter for the family now suing ikea, every day still brings heartbreak but the ikea recall is his legacy. This is the worst thing thats ever happened in our lives. Kanye west is known for being provocative. Lena dunham says this music video goes too far. This morning she has some choice words for kanye west. Calling his explicit new music video for the song famous sickening. The star of hbos girls writing a scathing facebook post. Calling it one of the most disturbing artistic efforts in recent memory. The video is graphic. We cant show you most of it on morning tv. Using wax figures and doubles it depicts stars like taylor swift and rihanna naked and even likenesses of bill cosby, donald trump, and george w. Bush seen lying in bed with kanye and his wife, Kim Kardashian. Theres a difference between a woman choosing to portray herself and consenting to that image and a man choosing to portray her in a certain way that is dehumanizing and thats objectifying. Kanye previously telling vanity fair the video is a comment on fame. But dunham thinks it strikes a misogynistic tone. Her blood boiled when she saw her close friend taylor swift in the video. It makes me feel sad and unsafe and worried for the teenage girls who watch this. Im really happy for you. Im going to let you finish. Kanye has a long history with swift dating back to 2009. The video drawing mixed reaction. Chris brown who is depicted in the video next to exgirlfriend rihanna posting on instagram, kanye crazy. Talented but crazy. Other publications calling the video hypnotic, damn genius and brilliant. Lena dunham was trying to make a point of a conversation we need to have within our culture about how we view, treat and represent women. Dunham herself is no stranger to nudity on her hbo show. She appears frequently in provocative scenes on girls. But she said kanyes video just feels different. And left him with this message. Make a statement. But i cant watch it. Dont want to watch it. If it feels informed and inspired by the aspects of our culture that make women feel unsafe, even in their own beds, in their own bodies. We did reach out to kanye, taylor swift and rihanna. All their teams declined to comment. And it is unclear, none of these actors, singers, are actually in that video. These are all depictions, either wax figures or people playing the part. We should point out that kanye did post a tweet and he deleted it and it said exactly this, can somebody sue me already. Ill wait. He deleted that tweet. That was sort of the last we heard from kanye on this. One of the funny comments was a spokesperson for the former president george w. Bush who said by the way thats not him. Just to clarify that it wasnt him. Yeah. Yeah. All right, hoda. Thank you very much. Just ahead, the graphic new psas aimed at keeping you safe. Nbcs joe fryer is here to explain. Hi, joe. Were talking about scammers taking total control of your cell phone. You can be in the middle of a phone conversation when suddenly the line goes dead because someone has transferred your number to another phone. The federal government says its a growing problem. Without your cell phone ever leaving your hands, your account can be hijacked, the phone number stolen. It really can happen to anyone. Reporter in fact it happened to lori who detailed her experience in a blog post. She first knew something was wrong when her phone and her husbands phone stopped working and she called her carrier. They said that it looked like we had some new iphones on our account. I said i didnt buy any new iphones. Reporter she discovered someone in ohio hundreds of miles from her home in pennsylvania used a fake i. D. With her name and the thiefs photo. The thief asked for an upgrade and walked out with new iphones both assigned their phone numbers. The idea that someone could steal my identity this way and that the phone company didnt do much to prevent it was quite unsett unsettling. Reporter similar crimes are surfacing across the country. We have seen them throughout the last couple years on the rise. Reporter last year in kansas, an alert at t employee helped Police Arrest four suspects attempting to buy phones with fake i. D. S and in North Carolina, a thief used a churchs name to purchase 17 iphones. In january of 2013, the ftc received about 1,000 reports of this type of Identity Theft. Three years later in january 2016, the number jumped to more than 2,600 reported thefts. Thats just scratching the surface because this kind of i. D. Theft is almost never reported. Experts say criminals often get the information they need by simply combing the internet finding names linked to specific phone numbers and more. Theyll use information often times to answer the security questions, information they might be able to find on your facebook account for example. Be cautious about what information you post on social media sites and create an extra password or pin required before anyone can make changes to your mobile phone account. All of the major carriers offer this. These criminals are incredibly passionate about what they do. Theyre very creative. And if one of the attempts fails, theyll look for some other avenue to get in. The trade Group Representing the Wireless Industry says Educational Programs on cybersecurity are working pointing to a survey found more than 60 of consumers use the extra pins or passwords. An extra password no guarantee of protection. Other steps you should take to prevent Identity Theft include using a strong password. Dont use the same passwords for all of your accounts and carefully examine bills for your credit card and your mobile phone every month searching for anything that doesnt look right. Thats right. A growing number of millennials are sticking with their childhood doctors into their 20s s that a good move . Natalie has more on the trend. Thats right. Weve been talking to young aduls and they dont really see any reason why they should move on. And to doctors who are increasingly seeing toddlers and millennials in the same office. I dont mean to be a jerk but the baby with the rash came in after me. The idea of grownup patients sitting in a toy filled waiting room seems like a punch line on shows like friends. Rossy, were ready for you. But for 20 somethings like drew jackson, no jokes, please. I see no reason to change anything. At 26, jackson has his own apartment and a full time job but still sees his long time doctor, a pediatrician. She has all my medical history. She knows me more than anybody else would. And so just for convenience purposes, makes a lot of sense. And shes very good at what she does. Tell me about theal al ea a appointment. Were used to getting patients in same day when theyre sick. More young people should see primary care doctors instead of going to Emergency Rooms for basic treatment. Jackson pays for his own Health Insurance but many people his age dont and 32 of americans 18 to 34 live with their parents. Millennials are very anxious to leave their parents a basement. Theyre not so anxious to leave their pediatricians. But if more 20 somethings are keeping their doctor, is that creating a waiting room traffic jam for new babies and toddlers . I think there have always been patient whos love their pediatrician because they have grown up with them and wanted to stay. I remember i still went to see my pediatrician when i came home from medical school. Reporter for most people, it comes down to having a doctor you really trust with or without the lollipop. And Something Else that could be driving the trends, under the Affordable Care act, people still can stay under their parents Insurance Plan until the age of 26. Combine that with the shortage of general practitioners and many are just simply choosing to stick with the doctor they know and who know them best. Natalie, thank you very much. Dr. Natalie azar is an nbc news medical contributor. Good to see you. Is there any real medical reason why you need to leave your pediatrician at the age of 21 . Thats a good question. Thats really the Million Dollar question. I think the position of the three medical groups that are sort of have come together to give us a little bit of a recommendation on this is really that you want to ensure that people are getting what we would think of as medically and devel developmentally care. Age 21, you start Cervical Cancer screenings. Are they trained for that . Are they trained for patient care past the age of 21 . Right now, strictly speaking, pediatricians are trained to take care of people, including cholesterol and obesity and all the stuff you normally would think of as, you know, applying to adults until the age of 21. But, of course, as natalie pointed out with the Affordable Care act, prem extending coverage with pediatricians. Certainly they can handle some of that. A good transition age between 18 and 21. Lets talk about some other good reasons to change over. Youre moving . Youre moving. So if you think about 18 to 21, doesnt that fit really nicely with the time that you go to college . Maybe youre not coming home for breaks all the time. Maybe your insurance is changing. That is another reason you may switch insurance. Are you going to be a 23yearold looking for a pediatrician . In all likelihood not. Starting a familiar zblichlt that is selfexplanatory. And then needing a specialist. Of course. If you have a disease, you may go see a rheumatology. You may have a kidney disease. They can perform the function of being a primary care doctor. May seem like an obvious question, when you go from a pediatrician, is it that you always go to what is called a primary care physician . So where you can transition to, can you go to a primary care physician, there are two people under that umbrella, an internist or a family physician. I think Family Practice medicine is a really nice and appealing thing for a lot of people. They take care of people throughout this span of the lifetime, from infancy into old age. And also ob gyns can perform the function. But the take home is that just because youre graduating, right, from high school or graduating from college, youre not graduating from medical care. We want to transition people into continued health care with another provider. Great information, natalie. Thank you very much. Appreciate it. Now lets get a check of the weather from al. All of a sudden, were looking at showers off the eastern seaboard. We have a little wet weather out of new mexico. Thats going to bring showers there. Look at the temperatures though. From the southwest inland to california, temperatures well over 100 degrees. Cool up into the great lakes. And for today, strong storms in the gulf. Slight risk also in the northern we start out cool, but it will be another very warm day all across the bay area. Right now, it is 62 degrees in the peninsula and 59 in the east bay. Temperatures quickly warming, up to 95 degrees in the north bay. 76 degrees, nice comfortable there comfortable temperature there and some low to mid80s for the peninsula and the east bay. Trivalley, hitting 102 degrees today, most likely the host day of the week. And then well have some gradual cooling. Thats your latest weather. Matt . All right. Thank you. Safety begins with you. What do you think of this . They grab your attention, thats for sure. Yeah. They make a point. Which a lot of people need to pay more attention to. Obviously, were looking at animation and stick figures and a lot of people think it still goes too far. I think its a big problem. People still are doing that. I remember as a child in Elementary School they showed us a video and then we saw a little boy that was amputated because of it. It stuck with me for the rest of my lichlt its one thing that will stick with people. I dont know. In high school, some bring in cars that have been torn up as a result of teenager driving drunk. They park it right in front of the school. In new york they run the ads about lung cancer. I think theyre effective. I do, too. Kids know how to work a smart phone. But is that know how coming at the expense of other basic life skills . A new study is suggesting that it does. It looked at kids under the age of 5 and found that 58 with play a basic computer game. But only 43 can ride a bike. I know, that makes me sad. 17 can make their own breakfast. And 9 can tie their shoes. The breakfast thing confuses me. This week on today food were highlighting regional favorites from across the country. A tristate favorite, two different ways. Nice to see you. Nice to see you. Anything parm. Chicken parm and eggplant parm. It wasnt until i moved to jersey that i did it. Lets look at ingredients. Very short and sweet. Kind of like me. You need basics. You need some flour, breadcrumbs, eggs, salt and pepper and Garlic Powder. Chicken. Cheeses of your choice. I like moz and provalone. The dredging station is simple. The crucial thing is i add some garlic salt and pepper to my breadcrumbs. What people dont realize they do so often is they forget to season every layer of their dish which is really important. You dont want just the top to be seasoned. You want every layer to be seasoned. And then you just dredge into the flour. Dip into the egg, shake off excess and dredge in your bread dru breadcrumbs. You have perfect chicken cut le cutlets. Light olive oil. Sunflower oil. Nothing strong like extra virgin because it will burn up and be terrible. How long does it take to cook . About two minutes on each side and thats it. What you do is once you have your beautiful cutlets ready, layer them with your favorite marinara sauce. You layer your sauce. Do a trio of cheeses. Why not. Its a parm. At the end of the day we love that from the mozzarella. I love sharpness. This is going in the oven look at what temperature for how long . Doesnt matter until everything is golden and bubbly. And thats what it looks like for a side of spaghetti. Going to eggplant parm. No Garlic Powder and no breadcrumbs. Get yourself a firm egg appellant and slice it nice and thin. Ive done a terrible job. The culinary crew does an amazing job. No breadcrumbs. You want salt and pepper your flour. I want to look downstairs. We have tasters talking about this all morning. Were loving it. So good. So good. This is how we do it in naples, italy. We dont do breadcrumbs. You dont want breading to compete with bread. You fry them until golden and crispy and thats what they look like. Nice and thin. Same thing, you layer. Layer of eggplant, you have your parm and bake until golden bubbly. Everything is cooked. You look for cheese to melt. Probably will take a good 15, 20 minutes. Can we show this here. Who did portion control on that one . That is massive. You can do it like that or in subs. Well dig in right after we gokart race. Lets do it. I dont want to cramp up on the course. Here to get us ready for the second half of the season, Danica Patrick and nascar hall of famer and nbc commentator, dale jarrett. Good morning. Good to see you. Good to see you. You have history with this track. Daytona, yeah. I was pole first time. Leading laps is a short list of drivers. Nothing would be better than getting a win at daytona. This is your second year of commentating. How great is it to be back . Racing is fantastic and nbc does a great job of covering the sport. Were looking forward to our 20 weeks and crowning our new champion. How has your presence changed the fan base of nascar . What do you think . I dont think i know the answer to that. Im a fan and i dont know if i was before. I feel like im very fortunate. I feel like i have a lot of kid fans which is great. Kid fans give it up for danica. I mean, theres been middle age men and i love when older people are big fans. That to me is a big compliment because theyve been around a long type and seen a lot of people come through. But i think kids mean the most to me. If im busy at the racetrack, i at least try to make time for the kids and thankfully most people understand that. I only have time for kids right now. But that can change your day. I have to remember that when i have a bad day. Think about the moment that is about to play out right now. We have hoda, natalie, matt and al in a showdown of epic proportions. Are you guys ready . What are we doing . Tell them what theyre doing. Okay. Im pretty sure that you race down to the end. You might need it. Dont be afraid to use those bumpers. Thats what theyre for. She likes the Demolition Derby here. Pick up a cone and throw it. Ready . Yep. Go blue button reverse. Oh boy. That was smooth, matt. Smooth hand over. Danica, are you inspired by any of the driving . Demolition is a lot of what daytona has to offer. Its good inspiration. Al is coming up. Team roker and team lauer. Hoda is still driving. Are you okay, hoda . Did i win . Youre alive. You won the moral victory. Classic case of tortoise and the hare there. My car wouldnt go. Then it picked up steam and she was as we figure out what happened, the most important thing is you can catch cup zero 400 live from daytona saturday night on nbc. Coverage begins at 7 00 p. M. At a packed hearing, Council Members voted unanimously to shoot down plans for a new coal shipping hub that would have been the largest anywhere on the west coast. This morning on todays take, Amanda Seyfried opening up about her new role and what she would be doing if she wasnt an actress and kanye controversy and surprising stars speaking out about his new music video. All that coming up right now. Announcer from nbc news, this is todays take with al roker, natalie morales, willie geist and tamron hall live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. Welcome to today for a tuesday morning, june 28th, 2016. Im al along with nat and tam. Will is off this morning. Chain smokers featuring daya. Well hear from her coming up in a little bit. I love the song. My son sings this song so beautifully. He loves it. Whenever he sings it every time i hear it, i think of my son. The chain smokers. Log today is. It. Shell be here sit still pretty. To start things off, kanye west back in the news again. New music video for song famous getting more attention than usual. Acess lena dunham arguing the video goes too far. If you havent seen it, it uses wax figures and acting doubles depicting stars like taylor swift, rihanna and more naked and lying in bed with kanye and his wife, Kim Kardashian. A lot of folks weighing in on this. Yesterday dunham writing a scathing facebook post. I know theres a hipper, cooler reaction than the one im currently having. I dont have a hip, cool reaction because seeing a woman i love like taylor swift, a woman i admire like rihanna reduced to a pair of waxy breasts made by some special effects guy makes me feel safe and unsafe and worried for teenage girls who watch this. Went on to say kanye is cool. You can see theres some of the folks. Thats the wide shot as it were. We reached out to kanye, taylor swift, their teams. They declined comment. I dont know. I guess its based on a painting according to kanye. Its based on he says its basically a comment on fame. The painting is sleep, which we have at the bottom. Lined up. Art is supposed to be controversial. Gets you talking. Talk about comment. Lena dunhams artistry is seen as controversial as well. Her show girls something she created. I remember when girls started people commented there was no diversity and commented on the intimate scenes. Art brings debate. I think thats kanye probably embra embraces lena dunham debating. Its also amber rose, his exgirlfriend. The man who Kim Kardashian did the famous tape that many say is the reason she became famous. And kanye west said that this was not an endorsement of anyones behavior or he wasnt looking at guilt or innocence with bill cosby being in there. Its a look at fame. Like him or not, think about that row of people there. The question though is if you dont okay, youre taylor swift or whoever. You dont have a choice in that. Is somebody allowed to use your image without you giving she jumped a leap to say that shes concerned about safety of young girls. Thats the treacherous territory. The fact about image kanye did tweet out someone sue me already. Pulled that down. He pulled it down. I dont know. If kanye had done that of you or myself or natalie, how something with kims wax figure. They dont care. Shes been naked on everything. If we own it and i dont know what the law is. What are imaging laws . You have people who paint photos of folks all the time or paint pictures, portraits, put them up. I dont know. I dont know. By the way, thats a good question. I dont know how i would feel. I would probably i dont know if i would care. I dont know if i would care. Somebody trying to profit off your image without your permission is just i dont think kanye would want people pirating his music. Is it like sampling your music without your permission. Is it okay if i take your music and put it out as my own . This goes back to the weird al yankovic. He got permission from those artists. Thats great point. Thats the point. Using peoples images to make money and gain more fame for yourself and to do it in putting them in positions they may not want to be in. Promote your message. Thats where i draw the line. I think thats the problem. Again, kanye, knock it off. Youre a talented man. Again, guess what, were talking about it. I think there is something to be said for that. Maybe we should have a kanyefree zone. I dont think he needs to be banned. Im not saying banned. Let him do it. We dont need to talk about it. Hes an artist. Thats what we do. You can go down a litany of artists that we talk about in our society that have been controversial. I just read this great article on the impressionists talking about this huge debate of their art being rejected and seen as trash and now everyone is in a major museum. Larger issue here is this is what we do. We talk about madonna when she first started out rolling around in the Wedding Dress and people thought it was the end of the world in tv. She is still one of the greatest. I dont know. Well look forward to kanye putting you in the next video. Lets move on. Heres a question. When it came to picking your childrens names, did you reveal names to anyone beforehand . Did you have them picked out before you saw the baby . Yes. You did . I dont weigh in on other peoples kids names and we did not give anybody an option to weigh in. Everybody has an opinion. My parents asked me straight out, what do you think youre going to name your kids . I remember saying should i tell them or should i not. I kind of need to see how it feels with them. I mentioned at the time names like taylor or hudson and my parents both were, like, what . Nobody is going to know if thats a boy or girl. Did you change your mind as a result . Luke is luke hudson. It didnt affect me at the end of the day. Its my child. I can name my child whatever i want, okay. You may not like it. Its my baby. The reason we talk about this is a woman wrote to the daily mail saying she was worried because baby names her daughter was considering like pixie rose, primrose bean. The columnist said the mother was, like, im worried that names are a little too cute. When she grows up shes stuck with two kucute names. The columnist said some names you dont weigh in on. Our producer adam miller naming his daughter lebron james. Shes cute. And the babys middle name will be kanye. You brought him up again. You have the kanye obsession. Starbucks yesterday we had the cheeto mac and cheeto. Today we are going to bring into your life something at starbucks. Its an orange drink.
