Stepped up for the Independence Day weekend. How will that, the weather and the crowds impact your plans . Party on the plaza. Were kicking off the Holiday Weekend in a big way with a live concert from Rachel Platten. Today friday, july 1st, 2016. Announcer from nbc news, this is today. With matt lauer and savannah guthrie. Live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. Good morning. Welcome to today on this friday morning. Huge crowd out on the plaza for a summer concert im matt lauer, tamron is in for savanna while she wraps up vacation. Rachel platten is here. Shes the queen the anthem. This is a good day. Before the holiday, rachel, huge crowd. Weather cooperating for the time being. We will get to that later. First our stop story. This is a new twist in the governments investigation of Hillary Clintons emails and the role of attorney general Loretta Lynch. After a controversial meeting with bill clinton raised some eyebrows. Andrea mitchell has this covered. Good morning to you. Good morning, matt. Because of the political up roar over that meeting between lynch and former president bill clinton in a highly unusual step in the middle of an investigation lynch will announce today that she will accept the recommendation of career prosecutors and the fbi on the Hillary Clinton email case. And not overrule not overrule t. This stems from what she described as a chance encounter. The former president in phoenix campaigning for his wife. The attorney general visiting local police. But it was a 30minute meeting on her government plane when they crossed paths at the airport thats causing controversy. I actually thought they were joking. I thought the people that told me i said no way. Theres no way thats going to happen. And it happened. And im just flabbergasted by it. I think its amazing. Judicial watch demanding an investigation. Lynch calling it a social chat about golf and grandchildren. There was no discussion of any matter pending before the department. There was no discussion of benghazi. No discussion of the state Department Emails by way of example. Reporter even some democrats expressing uneasiness about the meeting. Axelrod saying i take them at their word but foolish to create such optics. Senator cory booker and Chuck Schumer defending lynch. The president not commenting when asked. Thank you very much, everybody. Reporter donald trump also courting controversy with a crack about mexico while blasting free trade deals. Hearing a plane overhead during his remarks he quipped that could be a mexican plane there planning to attack. Chris christie and Newt Gingrich are being vetted as possible trump running mates. As trump moves toward his Vice President ial choice, the Clinton Campaign is dealing with selfinflicted wound of the blowup over the email investigation. A controversy not likely to be diminished by the attorney generals speech today. Andrea, thank you very much. Lets bring in mark halperin. You think Loretta Lynch is doing the right thing here but in some ways has this jeopardized the investigation . It hurts it. People suspicious of this will become more suspicious. She probably would have done this anyway and deferred to career prosecutors and fbi both because its the right thing to do and because the appearance would be horrible. This is the president s appointee as attorney general. It makes the decision now even more high profile. To optics of this, the clintons know better than anyone else what the appearance in this decisive world we live in. Why this error . Why this unnecessary meeting . The most obvious explanation and probably the right one is bill clinton is a really social guy, right. Weve all seen situations where famous people on the tarmac, the two planes, its fun. Lets go over and visit. Someone, bill clinton, Loretta Lynch, or someone who worked for them standing there should have said this is the wrong time for a social meeting. The fact it was 30 minutes is arousing a lot of suspicion talking aboutolf and grandkids for 30 minutes, thats a long time without commercial breaks. Thats a solid 30 minutes. The president knew this was a critical time. Im sure he regrets it. The suspicion the former president. Yes. Suspicion will never go away. This plays right into the narrative that a lot of republicans and Many Democrats as well have about or have been using with the clintons. They play by their own set of rules and theyre above everything. This doesnt help her. It doesnt help. Its totally selfinflicted. It puts the attorney general in a horrible position. She has to take this extraordinary step today. Yesterday she defended saying there was nothing to it. Ill be curious to hear if she said she made a mistake. President clinton made a mistake. People critical of him said he did it to try to influence the investigation. Theres no way for him to without a transcript of the conversation, theres no way for him to prove to people thats not what this was about. Mark halperin. Appreciate it. Holiday travel rush is on. In fact, aaa is predicting that more than 40 Million People will be traveling from home and 3 million of those alone at the airport. Lets take a look at some of the airports. Heres chicagos ohare where the current wait time is about 30 minutes. How do we know . You can logon to tsa. Gov and check the wait times at different airports. Plug it in if youre going to the airport and check the current wait time. At Laguardia Airport right now, things are slow going and part of the reason is because flight costs are 9 cheaper than this time last year and hotels of cheaper as well. That has a lot of people traveling. Lets look at some of the flights that were seeing in the northeast. All of this white you see on flightaware. Com indicates where most of the activity is and its busy in the northeast. Talking about the roads, you can see in washington, d. C. , things are starting to get slow going and i95 corridor thats going to be one of the toughest roads to travel from washington, d. C. Up to massachusetts. Mainly because of the nice weather and clear skies, beach weather, that will have people traveling and of course there will be 32 Million People on the roads making it slow as well. Looking at atlanta, things are looking okay right now. One of the things they want to point out is part of the reason things get slow on the road is because theyll have to have emergency rescues for 300 vehicles, roadside assistance, because of dead batteries, flat tires and lockouts. Make sure your car is up to speed before you hit the road and maybe that will help on the roads. Either way, it will be slow going. Thank you very much. Will weather be well done for our cookouts . Keep an extra set of keys. Someone else should hold onto them. Lets show you what happened in las vegas and we may see this again in parts of the midwest and plains. Heavy rain all of a sudden dry washes turned into rivers causing big problems. Dylan talked about the airports and the roads, here in the northeast weve got a potential problem later this afternoon when a lot of flights will take off from burlington to richmond. Strong winds, gusts, hail, tornadoes possible. Well be watching this. As this system pushes in, were going to look for those thunderstorms firing up by late in the afternoon into the evening hours and then drier conditions behind the front. The other danger spot were watching, the potential for serious flooding this weekend. Abundant moisture coming out of the gulf right along this front. Systems are going to form. Ill be celebrating this weekend. Hope you are, too. Every year we hear about accidents with fireworks, children dying in pools and even gas grills exploding. This morning we have you covered from top to bottom. One stop shopping for your holiday safety. Youre watching a fireworks misfire in california. The display malfunctioned sending projectiles everywhere. A few dozen spectators injured and even more dangerous when people set off those powerful fireworks at home. We showed you what can happen live on today. Here we go. Lets take that tight shot of the watermelon to see what this can do. Fire. Lets see what can happen when you lean over a firework. Ready. Fire. Look at that. Hes actually on fire. We saw a professional grade firework, consumers should not use them for two reasons in particular. Theyre far more potent and fuse time is far shorter. On a consumer firework you have 6 to 9 seconds to get away. You dont on these. Thats a matter of life and death. Heres another potential danger and this one affects all of us who love a good barbecue. The hidden danger in your propane tank. Youre watching a fourth of july nightmare in progress. Byron bends over to light his propane barbecue and then the explosion. His body is engulfed in a wall of fire. As soon as i did it, i looked down at my arm and saw skin melt off. He left propane on too long building up inside and igniting. I got seconddegree burns through here. Of course my face, my hair caught on fire. To find out how powerful a blast can be, we set up a demonstration. With minnesota firefighters standing by, we opened the gas valve to simulate a leak. I can smell propane right now. After just a few minutes three, two, one. Did you see that fireball . That could be you standing at the grill. Take another look. A giant ball of fire erupting from the grill blowing the doors open. Whats the most common mistake people make when grilling . They turn on the gas and they leave the cover down and hit igniter and get an explosion from a buildup of gas. Keep the lid open before you open it. Dont wait and let it build up gas. Dont lean over the top so you singe your face off or worst. Just check it on your hose and connections to make sure theres no bubbling which means leaking gas. Grills are safe if used properly but firefighters say its easy for things to go wrong fast. And then theres your kids and the dangerous myth about drowning. I always thought when a child was drowning, when anyone is drowning they would be screaming help i cant swim. Unfortunately thats not the case. They really cant breathe so they cant call out for help. What does it look like. A drowning victims feet look like theyre climbing upstairs. All of the action is occurring under the water. No splashing to be heard on the surface. Looks very similar to this. Looks like youre relaxing on your back except your vertical. What do you do if you notice somebody drowning. Im play the victim here. Show us how to do it. Scream for someone to call 911. I hadnt had anything to eat. I have a condition that makes me hungry drunk. Did you diagnose yourself . Right before the commercial break i was like this. I felt hungry drunk. I took two bites of this cake and im coming back. In other words on july 4th when you guys are hosting the macys firework display, you better keep a power bar or something or snickers bar in your pocket. I feel like im whoa. I cant control what i say. You need to eat more. If you have protein in the morning before i planned on that. I had big plans this morning. Jenna bush hager has a story on waking up an hour earlier than your time so you can if you have a spouse, you can chitchat and look over things and make breakfast. I had big dreams for it. On an app. Theres this other thing called pyrotechnic writing where theyll write words in the sky. Incredible stuff. Its never been done on the National Stage like this. Weve been working on technology. We just finished it. Make sure you have a piece of cake before. I would hate to see what happens. Cake in a purse. What . Go from there. Cake by the ocean. The other big story, lottery winners. Awesome. I always make a list when i go grocery shopping. Sometimes you make a list for your spouse to go shopping and they dont follow the list. Guess what . One Staten Island woman thankfully gave the list to her husband but he didnt follow it. The good news is he didnt follow it. Nancy sent her husband to buy a few powerball tickets in january. She wanted him to buy powerball tickets. He bought megamillion tickets. She said powerball. Guess what . They won the 169 million jackpot. Hit it. He actually bought he didnt listen to me. He bought 20 in powerball and little did i know he bought megatickets as well. He had 1 leftover. He bought a dollar of mega. I love her. So nancy claimed the prize. This is my giant check. She said powerball. He goes rogue. Goes mega. They opt for lump sum. 64 million bucks. Kept it secret until this week. Guys, when you go shopping, do whatever you want. Al roker is going to end your marriage with that advice. You go rogue. You buy what you want. Spouses will be lined up for you. You put it in your phone. I buy ten more things not assigned. You come home with cheetos and mountain dew and this stuff. My feeling is if you go, then you buy. If youre not there, you are the one in charge. You guys often go rogue away from i get what they ask for. Thats what were having for dinner or something. I spend two hours in a grocery store. I make the list. I dont have to worry about going rogue. I can go rogue on myself. Get cheetos. I dont want cheetos. I think he needs some cake. Crank. This yesterday i was going through twitter feed and today show tweeted out this story. You click on it and never know if its click bait. Basically click bait is the head line and the story has nothing. Theyll say epic fall and you click on it. This one was headlined like epic wardrobe malfunction. Or something. It lived up to it. This adorable baby. Her picture has gone viral. You look at this picture. You say theres nothing wrong with that. This 7monthold dressed in a little hat and one piece. Olivias dad, jeremy, dressed her. He didnt think there was a problem either with this. Until the Text Messages between mom and dad. Brooke writes did you send olivia to day care without a shirt on . Jeremy said i sent her with that thing on. Response. Overalls . Supposed to wear a short under overalls. Jeremy, pleads ignorance at that point. But look at her little face. Shes happy about it. Its very simple. Lobster tail, shrimp, corn, onion, garlic, potatoes, mussels and so well start out chop up your onion. You have to clean your clams and your mussels. Youll put them in a bowl with clean water. Put corn meal in there. 20 minutes to an hour. Youll see the sentiment and washes sand out and on mussels you have to take another step. Theres the beard. You grab it with a towel and pull through or have your fish monger clean it out. Smash your garlic. Take the side of the knife and just smash it. Youll cut in one inch supplili. Adds a great flavor. Cut that up. Chop it up. Youll put that all in a pot. You notice how were not saying anything. I noticed. You take whole potatoes. Chopped onion. Your salt. Some water. Some white wine. And youre going to bring that to a boil. Once its at a boil, youre going to now take your lobster, this is what it looks like inside. Very nice. Nice and juicy. Thats good. Okay. Youll take your mussels sorry. Your clams. Corn. Lobster tail. Put crab in here if you wanted. Youll cover that up. Youll let that boil for another five minutes. Lobster is not cooked when you put it in . Its not cooked. Let that boil five minutes. Take that and youll add after five minutes youll add your mussels and your shrimp. Youre going to boil that for five minutes. Once the shrimp turns pink, youre done. You end up with Something Like this. You can add a little more old bay if you want. Fish out the seafood and clams and corn and potatoes and all that. Youre left with a beautiful broth. Melt a stick of butter. Combine it. Boil it down a little bit so it gets a little thick. You have your dipping sauce and then you lay it out. Put it on a table with newspaper. I love that aspect of it. Dump it all in there. A lot of people if theyre on the beach do this in the sand.
