Well go to the ends of the earth. Big spenders. Americans shatter Online Shopping records over the weekend. To the tune of nearly 3. 5 billion. And retailers are hoping for a huge cyber monday as shoppers get set to point, click and buy today monday, november 28th, 2016. Announcer from nbc news, this is today with matt lauer and Savannah Guthrie live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. Good morning, everyone. Welcome to today on a monday morning. You know the definition of calm before the storm . Going to show you video now. This is a live look at the Amazon Distribution Center over in new jersey. That place is going to be jumping. Its cyber monday. I have been limbering up my fingers ready to do Online Shopping. I know you are. The rumor is you are done. Im trying to organize. I might be over taken by a baby in a couple weeks. Lets get to our top story. President elect donald trump busy on twitter, slamming Hillary Clinton blasting efforts to recount votes even claiming though that fraud cost him the popular vote. Nbcs Hallie Jackson in trum tower. Good morning to you. Reporter good morning to you. This morning the president elect is back home from the holiday, back in new york and back online, tweeting those accusations of voter fraud without evidence, all of it as the drama over his cabinet selections heats up. His leaks allegations unsubstantiated and unproven, the president elect undeterred. Tweeting he, quote, won the popular vote if you deduct the millions who voted illegally a claim spread by some websites without evidence. Donald trump claiming voter fraud nationally and in three states specifically, virginia, new hampshire, and california. The president elects Transitions Team has not clarified what he is talking about but it is clear why hes talking. Seemingly irritated by an election recount, set in motion by the green Party President ial candidate, jill stein, in wisconsin. And maybe two more battle grounds soon. Hillary Clintons Campaign now joining in, making clear they didnt start the battle nor do they expect it to change the results. Clintons Campaign Lawyer tweeting overnight we are getting attacked for participating in a recount we didnt ask for by the man who won election but thinks there was massive fraud. The president elect trying to use clintons own words against her. In another tweet, citing this moment from november 9. We must accept this result and then look to the future. It is a total and complete hypocritical joke that the group of people that thought they were nervous about president elect trump not conceding are the people that are conducting recounts in states where we won by over 68,000 votes. Reporter one of the president elects top aides, in an immiss isnt recount rebuke referencing a 45minute conversation between donald trump and president obama this weekend. There is a respect for the process and the peaceful transition of power which is why this recount by jill stein and now the hillary people is so confounding and disappointing. Reporter Kellyanne Conway one of trumps key adviser making a public push against mitt romney, a former never trump leader, now one of the contenders for secretary of state, along with rudy giuliani. Im all for party unity but im not sure we have to pay for that with the secretary of state position. Reporter so about those comments, two top aides tell msnbc the president elect is now apparently furious at that action at the comments with others saying they are baffled about the public discussion over that secretary of state position, matt and savannah. Donald trump will have more meetings here at trump tower today. Before you go, can we go back to the recount situation. First, at this moment whats the likelihood it happens, and whats the likelihood it makes any difference . Reporter so let me take that in two parts. Likelihood it happens, recounts are state by state, not nationally. So in wisconsin right now you have a series of local clerks, figuring out how much a recount would cost. Then if the green party can cover those, which jill stein says she can, then you will see the recount set into motion. In wisconsin, at least, with the possibility of two other states, maybe pennsylvania and michigan on the way, as far as the likelihood it changes everything, extraordinarily slim, if you just look at the odds. The other part is even if, say, something were to flip in wisconsin, you would still need two others to flip as well, pennsylvania and michigan for Hillary Clinton to, for example, take the presidency. Again, very, very slim chances. Also a tight, tight timeline in some of these states, right . Reporter wisconsin has a deadlin set by the state of december 13 to get this recount finished which means already youre seeing some of the local municipalities warn they have to work nights and weekends to get this done if it happens. Should mention that today is the deadline to trigger a recount in pennsylvania, and wednesday in michigan where that vote margin is the closest at 10,000 votes. Thank you very much. Also this morning the official tributes under way in cuba following the death of its controversial former leader fidel castro. Nbcs Andrea Mitchell is in havana this morning. Good morning to you. Reporter good morning to you. It is a windy, very hot sunny day here, but thousands of people already lined up. This the first public ceremony to honor fidel castro, these are the loyalists, the people who revere his memory, and even his controversial legacy. Preparations for ceremonies today where fidel castro will be honored, before his remains are carried through the islands provinces, more than 500 miles to their final resting place sunday. In a mausoleum built for this day. At the university of havana students held their own memorial. I think that fidel castro was a good man. He always fought for the rights of cuban people. Reporter across the city a different point of view. Human rights protesters known as the ladies in white saying state Security Police warned them to stay home this week. Instead of holding their weekly march. So will things change under raul now that fidel has gone . Or is everything the same . She says nothing will change, the dictator raul castro will continue his war. Having defied 11 american president s, Fidel Castros passing was noted in strikingly different ways, by president obama and president elect trump. Obama praising castro saying history will record and judge the enormous impact of this singular figure on the people and world around him. Trump blasting castro as a brutal dictator with a legacy of firing squads, theft, unimaginable suffering, poverty and the denial of fundamental rights. Seeing a centerpiece his legacy, direct commercial flights starting this week, Postal Service with the u. S. , credit cards and banking, internet service. Cracks in the 50year trade embargo bringing dollars the to people like omar who drives a 1950 chevy. Were getting better. With the economy. Reporter and president obama did much of this by executive order. Donald trump can evers it and today he tweeted if cuba is unwilling to make a better deal for the cubans, for the cubanamericans and the u. S. As a whole ill terminate the deal. Thank you. I want to tell you about some major developments in syria, Government Forces have recapture add key part of eastern aleppo. The area has been held by rebels for the last four years. Now she is out with a new documentary that makes accusations about the churchs alleged conduct. Well talk to leah in just a moment, but first her story. These are just some of the things the church said about me. Reporter leah remini taking the church of scientology to task. She needs to move on with her life instead of pa thetical pat exploiting her former religion. When you stop [ bleep ] lives and families ill stop, too. Reporter she was an advocate for the church early in her career but more than three years ago has left it all behind and since then hasnt shied away from making serious claims of her own. Including in her best selling book, troublemaker, and on tv. We believe in something because it starts out very kind of normal. You can be a better leah. I could be a better mother. I could be a better sister. Reporter talking to ellen last week about what she calls the risk of speaking out. My story pales in comparison to what happened to other people. How people are bullied into silence. We dont have 3 billion to protect ourselves. Right . So what i have is im an actress and im able to speak. Reporter in a statement the church of scientology strongly denied her claims, telling today, in part, leah remini needs to move on with her life and career and stop blaming the church and others for all of her personal and professional setbacks. Most of all, she needs to quit promoting hatred and intolerance as a means to line her pockets. Fight for your family. Reporter a war of words between remini and the church of scientology, a trocontroversial religion thats created both friend and foe. Leah remini, good morning. You are dock this documentary series which amounts to a continuation of this very public battle with scientology. Why . Well, i think it is important. I sat back when you left the church, i wrote my book and i thought i was done. But i was watching what was happening to former members and former highranking clergy of the church. I was watching what the church was doing in response. And i just felt i had a responsibility to help out where i could and im not a big fan of bullies, so it is part of who i am and i was a fighter in the church. This is what they taught me. And so im going to continue my fight. But im on the right side of that fight now. I just want to send the message that im just not going to sit back and allow it to go on. People are talking about their experiences of physical abuse, mental abuse. To it be called a liar, to victimize victims is not okay with me. Obviously the church denies the allegations. Who do you hope sees this . Who is this for . Well, it is for the victims. It is for the people who have spoken out, but it is also for people who just maybe dont have the strength to fight, feel they dont have a voice. It doesnt im getting a thumbs up back there. So its really i just want to give people strength and not just with this organization but with any bully. I just hope that thats what the message is. The First Episode gets into your story, what happened to you. You were a member of this church since you were a little girl. Most of my life. What was it like to leave . Well, its difficult to leave. But again, i am on tv because i was an actress and i have a lot of support. So for me, it pales in comparison to what former highranking executives had to deal with and what parishioners had to deal with, just average, every day scientologists who dedicated their lives, money and families to this. Now theyre suffering for speaking out. I think thats something that a lot of people who hear about this think, i dont understand. Like if youre in any other church, you dont want to be in it anymore, you just leave. Right. Well, thats the difference here is that if you speak out, youre labeled an enemy to the church and the church has policies on how to deal with its enemies. And they go after them. Its in their own policies. So they dont know any different, as i did when i was if the church. So i understand this. I have compassion for it. Because you do become a person whos very hateful and youre very judgmental towards anyone who isnt a scientologist. And a critic of sign tollby is dealt with in a very specific way. And that is unlike a real church. The church says it doesnt disconnect families or encourage people well, theyre sly. They are sly in that they are right about there is no policy of disconnection as its categorized in the press. Because if youre not in it your whole life you dont actually know the inner workings of their policies. And their policy is very specific about how you deal with someone who has spoken out about the church of scientology, and there is no option but to disconnect or you will get kicked out of the church. Now for members who were in it their whole lives, this is an every day proposition. This is a quarter of a Million Dollar proposition for just average parishioners. The dedication it takes to be a scientologist is a lot. And its not easy to just walk away. Because most people say, why not just get up and leave . Well, youre leaving everything youve ever known. Youre giving up your whole life because that is what it takes to be a scientologist. Then youre going to be losing your family because most of your family and friends are scientologists. The church has issued lengthy statements about this documentary. I know youre familiar with them. In fact, your lawyer wrote back to them and said, youve inflicted damage on leah and ask for 1. 5 million. The church said that amounts to extortion. Sure. We put the whole statement on today. Com, in fairness. What do you say to that accusation that youre in it for money . Well, im not going to get a dime. Ive given millions to the church and they have amassed 3 billion. So i think that speaks for itself. I also think it says a lot about the organization, how they respond to its critics. Its not just me. Its anyone who has spoken up. Everyone is called a liar. Everyone is called an apostate. Everyone is called the same thing. And im in good company. They did it to anderson cooper. They did it to an Award Winning filmmaker. They did it to an oscar winner. Ims in good company. Did you ever think i dont know if i want to do this . Yeah. Every day im like i dont know if i want to do this. Its not an easy thing to do. But i think it is the right thing to do. And im not talking about myself. Im talking about its victims and i feel it is Important Message and i feel this is the path that im supposed to be on at this point in my life. Leah remini, thank you so much. Again, the premier of scientology and the aftermath airs tomorrow night on a e. You can read the churchs full statement at today. Com. You want to make sure that when you download an app to shop at a particular merchant, youre getting the real app. You can tell because the real app wont have reviews or faulty english. It will have reviews. If youve got no reviews on an app at all, thats a problem. And if you dont see any previous versions of an app, thats also a sign. Going online, im going to be putting a lot of personal information on to websites. How do i protect myself . No matter what device you are shopping on, your phone, l lap be, or tablet, if you havent downloaded the latest version. Dont shop on a public wifi. Debit cards have zero liability protection. Im al, along with tamron and good buddy of ours, cohosting today. Fred graham. Thank you so much. 16 years after my first time coming on this show. Happy to be here. He worked his way to the top fast. And does not age. I love the title entertainment expert. Does that mean when you were like 5 years old you were going around scoring cartoons that you watched . Were you in my house . Always obsessed with music and tv and movies. I was reading billboard magazine as a 10yearold. I knew all the actors nominated. I was a dork. You probably could not wait to get the fall Preview Edition of tv guide. For me it was more entertainment weekly. One last movie that you had to pick, one before the lights go out on this life, what would you watch . Ooh. I loved lost in translation. I am a huge bill murray fan. That movie speaks to me. When im in a notsogreat mood i can put it on and feel terrific. I just learned so much about you just now. How was your thanksgiving . I had a great thanksgiving. I was up with my family in Westchester County in yorktown heights. I used to live there. Theres my family right there. I feel very lucky that going to my parents house is something that i look forward to. It just makes me feel very safe and secure. We had 14 people total. I love that well orchestrated family photo. My family photo bunny ears, someone backfliping. Very symmetrical. Very uniform family. How was Patti Labelles . I took the train to philly. I watched you guys on the parade, then went up to philadelphia to visit Patti Labelle. I brought some pictures. This is me and Patti Labelle. Her dog. Super spoiled. I now have to figure out how to frame this. She had it in the rear part of her house near the swimming pool. There were balloons and things just everywhere. Then that was the setting. You walk in and it is Patti Labelles house. But i hadnt seen her yet. She just saunters out like a Patti Labelle gown thing. Then she takes the at her own party and she sings at her own party. We all fell in the pool. Like goosebumps. I gave her the gift, Patti Labelles the most famous cook. What do i take Patti Labelle for a gift . I had these boots custom made from this french designer. He makes shoes for lenny crakraz and all these rock stars. I took her these thighhigh boots because she had seen them on me and he made her a custom pair of her own. Thats why im back at Patti Labelles next thanksgiving. As a parting gift she gives you a pie when you leave the house. I was in the car eating the pie. Because you were in the pie business. Pattys pie went viral. You worked. Though it is not work. It is an honor to be part of this holiday tradition. Yeah. Absolutely. I mean i grew up watching this. Again, as many of us did. I always begged my dad you were photobombed by spongebob. Of course my kids have been coming for years. Courtney, the oldest, slept in. Although she joined us later for dinner. Lelas hair. Is that ombre . Yes. Then we went to dinner at danielle. Had a very nice thanksgiving. Thats a beautiful family. Can you believe your kids are this old now . Next year next year i will have obviously somebody whos working. Ill have a College Freshman and a high school freshman. What will you do with all this time . Oh, bring it you have time for holiday entertainment. Nick and i went to see moana this weekend which was spectacular. Whats the story line . Shes a young girl destined to be chief of her village. And but theres an environmental catastrophe going on that was caused by maui, voiced by dwayne johnson. She goes on a quest to find him and set things right. That is so cute. The movie brought in 81 million over the fiveday weekend. Thats the number two top thanksgiving weekend opening, ever. Frozen, 93 million. It didnt get quite there. But obviously this has struck a chord with people. Linmanuel miranda did the music. This is a lynn mso good that yo actually get into hamilton. The story we were talking earlier, shes obviously in that genre of the diz sney princess t one that doesnt need a love interest, just goes out shes doing her own thing. Thats the new formula there. There was a study on fact that girls now identify more with the princess saving actually the guy or not needing to be saved at all. My nieces who are 7 and 10 are all about this it is not a forced down your throat kind of thing. This is a very natural girl and this is what we do. The next big opening, star wars rogue one. Did you see the trailer . Tickets are on sale today. Hits theaters december 16th. Buy advanced tickets. Go online, buy your ticket tonight. Forest whitaker in this thing. There is a new app called atom tickets. You can even preorder your popcorn. Can you do it now . Get on it. Those are going to sell out. Is this the official start of the holiday movie season . Some people say november 1st. Some people say thanksgiving week. Some people say now. What should we be looking for . This is like playoff season for me, right . I love the movie lion which is with Nicole Kidman and dev patel from slumdog millionaire. It is a powerful story. Bring your kleenex. The little boy who anchors the first half of the movie is phenomenal. Thats my favorite. But la la land comes out in a couple of weeks, a musical with ryan gosling and emma stone. The two of them can sing and can dance. Ryan sings, too . Yes. He does everything he started out in the Mickey Mouse Club singing and dancing. This is kind of back to his roots, in a way. I would call this frontrunner to win best picture oscar. The other movie is fences. This is the movie adaptation of another play. Viola davis and Denzel Washington. Give her viola davis the best supporting actress now. I saw denzels performance on broadway. Just unbelievable. Both of them are incredible. Denzel directed it, too, by the way. My list is very unusual, i think. I saw nocturnal animals. It is super dark. Its emotional roller coaster. It is all kinds of levels of not holiday but it is so amazing. Its my heart was pounding. Jake gyllenhaal, phenomenal. It is an allstar cast. But how you temper this every night leading up to christmas i watch love actually. Its been a ritual. I put it in. Ill pause it. I dont watch the whole film. I just wrach atch it in increme. Never seen it. I cant live like this. Best Christmas Movie ever you have to go a long way to top elf. I dont think so. But i will watch it. Your family like the opening scene of love actually, you are at the airport and it reminds you of that moment when you are greeting a loved one. We didnt fly. Up next, just like the movie, all roads lead to forrest gump . I dont even know what that means. And you never know what youre going to get when tom hanks recreates his famous scene. Well show you what happens with tom as i guess a flashback. Love actually. Colleen loves helping the environment. And dale, well he loves colleen. They have their differences. But they make it work, most of the time. And at least they agree one thing. New tide purclean its the first biobased detergent. With the cleaning power of tide. Say more with kisses deluxe. Just fifteen minutes and a little imagination are all you need to make holiday magic. Chex party mix. Its what the holidays are made of. People say, lets just get a sandwich or something. Or something . You dont just graduate from medical school, or something. And we dont just pull smoked chicken, bake fresh foccacia and handslice avocado. Theres nothing or something about it. Everything your family touches sticks with them. Make sure the germs they bring home dont stick around. Use clorox disinfecting products. Because no one kills germs better than clorox. Back now with more of todays take. Commercial break learned al roker actually has seen love actually. I actually have. And what happened . Its okay. You did say you may have been in a bad mood. Maybe i was in a bad mood. Give it a second chance. Ive got other movies to watch. Whats does tom hanks say . He was on one of my fifrt shows from across the pond. He is unbelievable. Tom was on the show. He gets amazing stars and tom hanks was on and proves that he is all that and a box of chocolates. Check it out. Could you do the line from forrest gump where he suddenly discovers how much he likes running . I would be happy to do it but you must show the lady with the cue card because people will think that ive actually memorized this. Show the lady with the cue card. Cut over to her. She . There she is. Shes there. Now you wouldnt believe me if i told you, but i could run like the wind blows. From that day on if i was going somewhere, i was running no better. He talked about how rita wilson loves his forrest gump tush. Yes. Because tom was in terrific shape, not that hes not now but he worked out for this role. And he said she enjoys that. Interesting factoid. He didnt have it memorized because he did have the rap from big memorized. He did with it with a fan. He often gives speeches in hollywood and never has notes. Very impressive guy. Thats an interesting factoid about him, too, never has notes. We were in britain and staying in britain, with this this is so strange. Kelloggs official facebook in the uk and ireland creating a brunch controversy. The recipe suggesting read it. Avocado stuffed with feta cheese and cornflakes. This is the big breakfast. First of all heres the first thing. Its dry. Its dry off the top. You cant even cornflakes by the mass with no milk or something. I dont think so. This is horrible. Absolutely horrible. The problem is nothing really has a great flavor like avocado doesnt have a strong flavor. Feta cheese is like you left cottage cheese out. Its dry. It falls apart. This is so british. In america wed have cheese on it. Avocado toast, little slice of avocado, some garlic. And theyre so wellknown for their food in england, its surprising. Thats right. I wish everyone could smell it. It is so fragrant. Ive been cook onions for seven minutes or so. Just lightly brown. Let that go another three or four minutes. Soak the beans at least eight hours. Could you in a pinch used canned . It is on the directions. You could take those beans, put them in cold water, bring them to a boil for two minutes and then let them sit for an hour and it is the same. Oh. Really . I learned that from reading the box. We love you you got your soaked beans. I have chicken stock. Chicken stock. You could use vegetable stock . Absolutely. Theres pancetta inside there as well. Or turkey bacon. We let that cook for about 45 minutes or so. We take off about onequarter of the beans. The pancetta we take out, we take out as much rosemary as we can. Dice up the pancetta. Im not going to do this since i like your dress. We just buzz this until it is pureed. You could strain it if you want. You dont have to. Then you could put those beans directly back inside. This is what you end up with. You drizzle a little olive oil. This is amazing. A little parsley. No cream. And a good, crusty bread. I will add some extra Virgin Olive Oil on there. This is to erase the memory of that avocado cornflakes thing. So thank you for that. You could double this. Would it freeze well . Very well. This is a great thing to freeze. But on a serious note the young lady, beautiful, naja, she was 13 when she shot the movie. So talented. Recently just turned 15. Few months we found out shes been diagnosed with stage 4 hotchkins lymphoma. So it is sad but but, through it all its become very inspiring. Her spirit, her fire is crazy. Her joy. Shes lost her hair through the chemo, but shes in the 85 percentile of beating it. My mother has multiple sclerosis. Now with bounce back bigger than a movie. Ive partnered with Childrens Miracle Network hospitals so we are raising money and awareness to help her and her bills and her treatment but were aware of millions of other kids so im going around the country to different hospitals meeting these kids, giving them the hugs, giving them the pound and letting them know that me and the Childrens Miracle Network are going to raise money so that they make it to see another day.
