A threemonth state of emergency, as the u. S. State department condemns the bombing. And one of the disturbing attacks was caught on camera. Lets get right to nbcs Kelly Cobiella. Good morning to you. Reporter disturbing pictures out of egypt today. Egypts president was back from the highprofile meeting in washington. The two vowing to fight isis together. And now this, two churches bombed, dozens killed, the deadliest day for christians in decades. The palm sunday choir st. Georges church in tanta was just beginning to sing. Then, this. The pews, stained with blood. Parishioners in shock, many dead. The government says a bomb was hidden under a pew close to the altar. [ speaking Foreign Language ] reporter there was blood everywhere, this man says. All of the windows were shattered. Security was right on the door. On a holiday, there should have been more security. Hours later at the gates of the cathedral in alexandria, a suicide bomber tried to get inside. A child was playing inside the courtyard when the bomber blew himself up. This policeman who died in the blast stopped him. In all, more than 40 dead and Egypts Christian minority angry and afraid. A group affiliated with isis claimed responsibility for the bombings. But nbc news has not been able to authenticate that claim. The terror group vowing to ramp up against christians. Last december, a suicide bomber killed 28 at a cathedral in cairo. Egypts president Abdel Fattah Elsisi declared a state of emergency and put more troops on the streets. Hes promised to protect christians and fight isis. President trump calling him a key ally during their meeting last week. The president tweeting his support sunday. And overnight, offering condolences and a phone call. As christians observed the holiest week of the year, pope francis prayed for the victims during palm sunday mass. Egypt, once again is mourning. Christians here wondering if they can ever be safe. At this hour, more funerals here in egypt. Both christians and muslims were among the dead. And theres more questions about security at those churches, whether people were properly screened before going inside. All of this coming, as pope francis prepares to visit this country at the end of this month. The vatican says, that visit will go forward. Matt . Savannah . Kelly cobiella in cairo for us. In the wake of last weeks missile strikes, the Trump Administration is vowing to keep up the pressure on the syrian regime. But lawmakers on capitol hill want more specifics on the longterm strategy for syria. As for north korea, its provocative behavior has a u. S. Navy strike group led by uss u carl vinson Aircraft Carrier moving towards the korean pens l. A. All of this is creating tensions with russia. And things could come to a head tomorrow when secretary of state tillerson arrives in moscow. He will be the first trump cabinet member to visit there. And hes expected to press the kremlin on its failure to prevent syrias use of chemical weapons. And neil gorsuch is the Newest Supreme Court justice. The Young Administration is getting praise for acting decisively. But left unanswered is what happens next. The president s u. N. Ambassador says removing president Bashar Al Assad from power is a priority, which would mark a dramatic shift in the administrations policy towards syria. First, the air strike. Reporter the president back in the white house after a summit with the chinese leader and a weekend of golf, now facing criticism for the decision not to strike the runways at the air base. As President Trump faces those fresh challenges, behind the scenes there are ongoing tensions between two of his close advisers in the west wing. President trump aiming to turn the page in that ongoing brawl between two top lieutenants, steve bannon and jared kushner. The situation seemed to reach a boiling point. Over the weekend, in an attempt to mend fences, progress, perhaps. But will it last . The president looking for unity this week, after deep divisions have rocked his white house for days. Over the weekend, an intervention between the two warring factions. Chief of staff Reince Priebus holding an hour long meeting friday afternoon with chief strategist steve bannon and the president s soninlaw jared kushner. Bannon and kushner have been at odds over just about every policy issue with bannon calling kushner and his allies west wing democrats. He is willing to blow things up. He feels most comfortable when there is chaos. Reporter a source familiar with the friday meeting tells nbc news, the discussion was aimed at reducing that chaos, convincing both sides to bury the hatchet. The president , himself, pleased with where things ended up. All of it becoming a distraction for the white house. If donald trump abandons the people who elected him, and bannon does respect that wing of the republican party, hes going to be in trouble. One of these people is not like the other because his fatherinlaw is president of the United States. That makes him a little bit unfireable. Reporter amid turmoil kushners role seems to be expanding. Last week, traveling with the chairman of the joint chiefs of staff to iraq, while speculation swirled that bannon could be on his way out, after he was ousted from the National Security council. Governor Robert Bentley will be the first alabama official to face impeachment in this state in more than a century. This all stems from a relationship he had with an aide half his age. The lurid details which have rocked this state. This morning, a scathing, new report setting the stage for the possible impeachment of alabama governor Robert Bentley, claiming he abused his power to cover up an affair. Let me kiss that left ear, okay . Reporter allegations of a steamy relationship between the 73yearold governor and rebekah mason, an aide nearly half his age, came to light a year ago. The governor purportedly heard in racy phone conversations with mason. When i stand behind you and i and i put my arms around you, and i put my hands on your [ bleep ] and just pull you in real close, hey, i love that, too. Reporter those recordings, made by the governors former wife, diane, and turned over to authorities. What the relationship provides is motive and context. Reporter jack sharmon is the special counsel who investigated the case against the governor. There were glaring indicators of a romance. Like the time the governor accidentally sent a text to his wife, diane, saying, i love you, rebekah. And to keep his affair secret, the report found the governor encouraged in atmosphere of intimidation. We found not only an inappropriate relationship but the use and misuse of Law Enforcement and other state resources. Reporter the governor hasnt specifically admitted its him on the tapes. And both he and mason have denied there was ever a physical relationship. But bentley has apologized to constituents, while refusing growing calls to step down. I do not plan to resign. I have done nothing illegal. Reporter governor bentley, despite what he says there, says hes not google to resign. There are published reports today that he will, indeed, resign before these impeachment proceedings are completed. Now, to major travel headaches for airline passengers. This morning, delta is struggling to recover, after storms forced the airline to cancel thousands of flights. Part of the problem is as the Airline Tries to recover, they have to max out their pilot schedules, their flying days and give them the minimally required time off for rest every day. Tens of thousands of people have been inconvenienced, pilots are upset and delta is in damage control. This morning, Delta Airlines is still battling a perfect storm of problems. It really upset and really exhausted. Horrendous. Horrendous. Reporter since wednesday, the airline has canceled more than 3,500 flights, more than 3,700 delayed. It all started in the midst of spring break travel when a severe storm forced a threehour ground stop at atlantas hartsfield airport. A major hub, where 60 of its fleet cycles through every day. Its stressful. Reporter angry passengers went to twitter with deltameltdown. Tested time and time again. The airline going on damage control, dishing out 800 pizzas to hungry travelers and shelling out cash to people on overbooked flights. One family sacrificing their entire florida vacation. This is goodwill and the law that delta had to give this money. I walked away feeling really good. They have a passenger for life. Reporter operations are stabilizing despite staffing issues. Telling nbc news late sunday, unfortunately, availability of flight crews to operate within federally mandated crew rest and duty day guidelines following last weeks disruption, are still prompting additional cancellations and delays. Today, delta is hoping for calm after the storm. So heres the good news. Its a Beautiful Day here on the east coast. And so far, delta only has four Flights Canceled nationwide, as of this moment. It will stall out in texas, causing a threat of heavy rain in the hill country, from san antonio, just south of dallas, on up into little rock. We could see upwards of 5 to 7 inches of rain.
