Thank you very much. This is a crucial week for the white house on several fronts. In the wake of last weeks missile strikes, the Trump Administration is vowing to keep up the pressure on the syrian regime. The Young Administration is getting praise for acting decisively. But left unanswered is what happens next. The president s u. N. Ambassador says removing president Bashar Al Assad from power is a priority, which would mark a dramatic shift in the administrations policy towards syria. First, the air strike. Now, new questions about the strategy going forward. Our priority is first the defeat of isis. Of course its to defeat isis. Weve got to do that for peace and stability in the area. Reporter u. N. Ambassador nikki haley and secretary of state Rex Tillerson in agreement on isis but offering mixed messages about whats next for syrian president Bashar Al Assad. No way do we see peace in that area with assad the head of that government. Reporter tillerson, insisting no change in u. S. Policy. Suggesting that assads future should be up to the syrians with the International Community involved. If we can navigate a political outcome in which the Syrian People will decide his fate and his legitimacy. Reporter critics, including republicans, are quick to pounce. Assad yes and isis no. This focus you can defeat isis as long as assad is there is not true. Reporter a source familiar with the friday meeting tells nbc news, the discussion was aimed at reducing that chaos, convincing both sides to bury the hatchet. The president , himself, pleased with where things ended up. All of it becoming a distraction for the white house. If donald trump abandons the people who elected him, and bannon does respect that wing of the republican party, hes going to be in trouble. One of these people is not like the other because his fatherinlaw is president of the United States. That makes him a little bit unfireable. Reporter amid turmoil kushners role seems to be expanding. Hes around here some place. Thank you. And mike crabil. Thank you for all of your work. Thank you. And although he could not be here today, i especially want to express our gratitude to senator Mitch Mcconnell for all that he did to make this achievement possible. So thank you, mitch. Id also like to give my appreciation to chairman grassley for conducting such a fair and professional confirmation. Senator grassley. Where is senator grassley . Thank you. Thank you. Thank you, senator. Finally a profound thank you to Louise Gorsuch and to all of the gorsuch family, thank you. And louise, ive heard it first hand, i know what a total inspiration you are to your husband and to your entire family. So thank you very much. Fantastic. Thank you very much. We are here to celebrate history. The taking of the judicial oath by the newest member of the United States Supreme Court, neil gorsuch. Justice gorsuch, i just want to congratulate you and your entire family. Its something so special. In fact, ive always heard that the most important thing that a president of the United States does is appoint people, hopefully great people like this appointment, to the United States Supreme Court. And i can say this is a great honor. And i got it done in the first 100 days. Thats even nice. You think thats easy. This ceremony has special meaning as Justice Gorsuch is filling the seat of one of the greatest Supreme Court judges in american history, and thats Antonin Scalia who was a terrific judge and a terrific person. Justice scalia was a patriot who revered or constitution. He was beloved by many, very many who are here today. And he is deeply missed by all of us. I want to, at this time, recognize his incredible wife maureen, who i got to know very well over the last short period of time. And maureen, please stand up. Thank you very much. Thank you and your family. Thank you. Thank you, maureen. Americans are blessed to have in neil gorsuch a man who will likewise be a devoted servant of the law. Over the past two months the person people have gotten to know, respect and truly admire our newest member of the United States Supreme Court. In Justice Gorsuch, they see a man of great and unquestioned integrity. They see a man of unmatched qualifications and most of all and most importantly, they see a man who is deeply faithful to the constitution of the United States. He will decide cases based not on his personal preferences but based on a fair and objective reading of the law. Today we have all three branches of government represented at this event. It is a very special thing and a very special happening and its worth taking just a minute to remember what it all means. In our founders incredible wisdom, they gave each branch of government a different role in our great republic. We have a congress to write the laws on behalf of the people, we have a president to enforce those laws and defend our nation. And we have a Supreme Court to apply and interpret the law in a fair and impartial manner when disagreements arise. The founders separated power because they knew it was the best way to protect our citizens and keep our constitution secure. Justice gorsuch, you are now entrusted with the sacred duty of defending our constitution. Our country is counting on you to be wise, impartial and fair. You serve under our laws, not over them, and to safeguard the right of the people to govern their own affairs. I have no doubt you will rise to the occasion and that the decisions you will make will not only protect our constitution today but for many generations of americans to come. In just a moment Justice Gorsuch will be sworn in by Justice Kennedy, a great man of outstanding accomplishment. Throughout his nearly 30 years on the Supreme Court, Justice Kennedy has been praised by all for his dedicated and dignified service. We owe him an enormous debt of gratitude. And i am honored that he is with us today. This is a very, very special moment because many years ago a young neil gorsuch started his legal career as a law clerk to Justice Kennedy. You remember that, right . It is a fitting testament to Justice Kennedys impact that upon giving the oath to Justice Gorsuch he will become the first ever Supreme Court justice to serve with one of his former law clerks. Thats sort of a big deal, isnt it . I sort of like that. Thats sort of good. It has never happened before. Thats pretty good. Also shows you have a lot of respect for this man. Very good. Were thrilled to share this historic moment with Justice Kennedy, with all of you here today and with all americans watching us at home. Justice gorsuch, i again congratulate you and your entire family and i wish gods blessings on your amazing journey ahead. I have no doubt you will go down as one of the truly great justices in the history of the United States Supreme Court. I now invite Justice Kennedy to say a few words. Thank you very much. Thank you, mr. President. Mr. Chief justice, Justice Gorsuch and my fellow adherence to the idea and the reality of the rule of law. As many of you know, there are two oaths that a member of the federal judiciary must take. The first is the constitutional oath that so many of you are familiar with it. Applies to all three branches of the government. The second oath is one that applies just to federal judges. Both of the oaths date from the founding of the republic, the yjuju additional dates 1979. And both of these oaths remind us that we as a people are bound together, we as a people find our self definition, our respect, our heritage and destiny in the constitution. And so, Justice Gorsuch, there is one oath remaining for you to take, the judicial oath, before you may receive and accept your commission from the president of the United States. Are you ready, Justice Gorsuch, to take the oath . Are you ready to take the oath, Justice Gorsuch . Please raise your right hand and repeat after me. I nooem m. Gorsuch do solemnly swear that i will administer Justice Without respect to person. That ill administer Justice Without respect to persons. And do equal right to the poor and the to the rich. And do equal right to the poor and the rich. And that i will faithfully and imimportion nalty perform all of the duties upon me as a associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. As a associate justice of the Supreme Court of the United States. Under the contusions and law of the United States. Under the contusion and laws of the United States. So help me god. So help me god. Congratulations. [ applause ] i see before me so many to whom i owe so much. I know i would not be here today without your friendship and support. Thank you all. From the bottom of my heart. I want to thank the president for nominating me. And for the great confidence and trust hes reposed in me. I want to thank the Vice President for his constant encouragement and friendship throughout this process. Its not possible to mention here everyone i should mention, but id be remiss if i didnt thank the president s council, don mcgann and the Vice President s council and every Single Person in the White House Councils office for their tremendous and tireless support. I want to thank kelly ayotte and my daytoday team for their humor, for their sage advice, for their faith as we spent months and so many miles trooping together through the senate complex. I want to thank every Single Person, and there are so many, in the white house and the department of justice who worked through so many late nights and long weeks on my behalf. I want to thank senator mcconnell and senator grassley and their excellent teams for their support and leadership and i must thank any former law clerks and my dear friend who gave so selflessly through these last three months. You can deare dear to me. This is truly your doing and this is your day. I wish i could mention each of you by name, but you know who you are and you know your names are etched in my heart forever. This process has reminded me just how outrageously blessed i am in my law clerks, my family and friends and i hope that i may continue to rely on each of you as i face this new challenge. My former colleagues and the wonderful sfaf of the 10th circuit, i thank you for your faithful service and friendship over so many years and to my new colleagues and the staff of the Supreme Court, i thank you for the very warm welcome. I look forward to many happy years together. And i cannot tell you how honored i am to have here today, my mentor, Justice Kennedy, administer the judicial oath, a beautiful oath, as he did for me 11 years ago when i became a circuit judge. To the scalia family, i wont ever forget that the seat i inherit today is that of a very very great man. To my wife louise and my daughters emma and bindy, thank you for your perseverance, your patience, your courage and your love. I simply could not have attempted this without you. To the american people, i am humbled by the trust placed in my today. I will never forget that to whom much is given, much will be expected. And i promise you that i will do all my powers permit to be a faithful service of the constitution and laws of this great nation. Thank you. Weve been watching the swearing in of the next justice of the Supreme Court, neil gorsuch. Of course was a federal judge for the last 1 is years. And earlier in his career clerked for Justice Anthony kennedy who administered the oath a few moments ago. Lets go to pete williams, outside the court, where the first oath was taken this morning. Hes ready to hit the ground running. Theres already work for this judge to do. Reporter he doesnt have much choice. His First Official duty will be friday when the justices meet in their closed door congress to decide what case to take next. Theres several on which he could cast a decisive vote. Theres one thats been bouncing around for weeks, a test of whether businesses can refuse to provide their services for samesex weddings if they have ljs objectio religious objections. Another case whether the Second Administration provides the right to have a gun outside of the home. It was in 2008 when the Supreme Court said the Second Amendment provides for to have a gun inside the home for selfdefense. And then the Supreme Court comes into the courtroom next week for the final 13 cases of this term and the big one there is a religious freedom case. It comes from missouri. A challenge to laws in about half the states that say that state money cannot be given directly or indirectly to churches. Now a Lutheran Church in missouri applied for money under a state program to resurface its playgrounds. The state said no, you cant have the money. The challengers said no theres discrimination when other nonprofits would get the gun. He cant vote on the cases that were argued before he got here but he will hit the ground running. Absolutely. Lets go over to the white house where Peter Alexander is standing by. We should mention the newest Justice Neil Gorsuch, 49 years old. Could potentially spend decades on the court. This is one of the momentous choices that a president can make. Reporter youre right. I spoke to a top conservative here today that said this is perhaps the most important decision the president will make. A Supreme Court justice makes longer than any other pick he will make. And politically its his biggest tr triumph so far. Finally the president has something to hang his hat on, even skbroeked in the remarks saying i got it done within 100 day ps. Conservatives tell me this in effect binds the president s coalition. It succeeds in doing something here as president that he promised as a candidate he would accomplish. Its notable that President Trump said he may have this opportunity many or times. Notably three of the eight justices who are presently on the bench right now are 78 years of age or older. Its unclear whether or not President Trump may have another opportunity to try to sway the court into a more conservative bank. Peter alexander at the white house. Of course you can continue to watch coverage on msnbc and nbc. Com. A full wrapup tonight on nbc nightly news with lester holt. Well return most of you to absolutely. Do it and you will feel it. Sit in a suka and you will feel fragility. Light a hanukkah menorah and you will feel community. Light candles. Reporter what did you feel . You look at light and say, what does it mean to have a heritage, a family, an zeancest. Those things come quickly when you do something as simple as lighting candle sticks. Reporter passover is this week. You set a nice table for all of us. And part of passover talks about slavery, obviously, and the jews being free. But its also inner slavery and looking at what keeps you back. So many rabbis said what you did. Its not just the larger idea of slavery. It is our personal what we are enslaved to. Im enslaved to my devices. Enslaved to my email. And i would like to free myself of that obligation because i think sometimes im missing the moments. Family, is everything. And holiday after holiday, brings the family together. And reminds you of that. The fact that my fatherinlaw was dying when i was writing this, and the fact my son was going to college for the first time was not going to live under my roof anymore. Reporter it was hard. These are things where the holiday meets you, right where you are. Whatever is happening. We arent necessarily guaranteed another moment. And so, make sure that the one that youre in is as powerful and meaningful and lovefilled as you can make it. All right. Its so interesting. She found all of this faith that she didnt know was there. Go to the Weather Channel on cable. Im not so fast, not really furious. Savannah . I love the speed walking. Vin diesel likes that, al. Theres one name is thats synonymous with the fast and the furious. His character, dom, puts family over everyone else. But he joined up with Charlize Therons villainous character. Was it for me or for you . Or was it necessary . Necessary . Nothing is necessary. Everything is a choice. I simply made one. But so did you. You could have stopped me. You chose not to. Wonder what leddy thought about that. The problem with putting your foot on a targets neck is you can never let it up. I think i need to remind you why you chose to be here. Vin diesel, good morning. Good morning. Dom goes rogue. Dom is our good guy. What happened here . Its a good question. It forces you to have to go see what happens in the movie. Yes. At the heart of all of the action. And charlize theron, the first female villain for the series. That must have been fun. So fun. I remember gary gray talking about it on premiere night. The chemistry between our characters is so powerful. You really feel that dom is in this conflicted place. And it makes for an interesting story. Yeah. Theres a lot of play that goes back and forth between you. And i might add some lip lock at some point. Lip lock. There was a smooch. Im not giving away anything. There was a smooch. And when you think about it, we launched the trailer at times square. And it was, like, dick clarks new years rockin eve. And all of the screens played the trailer at the same time. It was the biggest trailer in history. And the most impactful moment was that kiss. That kiss was so impactful because of the decades of dom and leddys story telling. People are invested in these characters. Thats why a little kiss can be so powerful. This is the first in the final trilogy. We know theres going to be ten films total. We know theres going to be ten films total. Do you know how it ends . Yes. Are there shockers . Yes. How much pressure is there . Tons of pressure. You have put in all this time with these characters. Yeah. When i came on as producer, i started to produce films as trilogies and every film spoke to the next one. And as people were leaving the theater, they would say, whats going to happen next . That proves they are invested in the characters. And they adopted this franchise and this episodic style of story telling. Now, you have alisters saying, can i be in it . Including helen mirren. How did that happen . She called me up. Maybe it was this show. I dont know what show it was. She said, i love vin diesel. I want to be on fast and the furious. Someone make it happen. I dont think any of them took it that serious. An i was at an oscar party. And she comes up to me and says, vin, ive been talking about you so long. Get your act together. I want to be in your movie. And so, i look the writer we were in production or preproduction. I took the writer and the director with me to the Dominican Republic for a week. And we wrote her into the movie. You dont have to spend time memorizing the line. Can you believe it . It is the easiest character on some levels. On other levels, how do you make i am groot sound different each time you say it or mean something different. I heard you did it in 16 languages. James gunn likes to speak to every country direct ly.
