Dangerous flooding expected. Tornadoes expected. Al is tracking it all. Pope franciss message to the faithful as he arrives in egypt this morning. Security extremely tight for the historic twoday trip. Were live in cairo. Its the circle of life and it moves us all. And baby on board. Garett bolles steals the night by bringing his infant son on stage, showing him off to the crowd. The touching moment that has fans cheering today, april 28th, 2017. From nbc news, this is foe day with matt lauer and savannah guthrie. And good morning everyone. Welcome to today on a friday morning. I love it when future nfl stars go all disney on us. I thought i would like to start this show by Holding Charlie up in the air because the crowd loves it. We have a busy day, though. Lets get right to our top story and it is that surprisingly candid new interview with President Trump as he opens up about the challenges facing his administration and the job of being president. And in a moment, were going to have a candid conversation of our own with attorney general Jeff Sessions. But first nbc National Correspondent Peter Alexander is at the white house. Reporter day 99 now for President Trump. The president in a new interview saying the u. S. Is considering serious action in north korea. Also offering a personal view of kim jongun, refusing to say whether he thinks the young dictator is rational or irration irration irrational. President trump keeping up the tough talk on north korea, insisting he prefer a diplomatic solution but offering this warning. Well, there is a chance that we could end up having a major, major conflict with north korea. Absolutely. In an interview with reuters, the president saying this about north koreas erratic dictator, kim jongun. Hes 27 years old, his father dies, took over a regime, so say what you want, but thats not easy. Rex tillerson will chair a meeting signaling an openness for the u. S. To have direct talks with the country. Obviously, that would be the way we would like to solve this, but north korea has to decide theyre ready to talk to us about the right agenda. Reporter tillerson indicating china has asked north korea to stop its testing, something that top korean Officials Say would never happen. Overnight the country releasing this propaganda film, simulating attacks on the white house, the u. S. Capital building, declaring the enemy to be destroyed is in our sights. The white house is pushing back against new accusations it failed to properly vet Michael Flynn. Why would you rerun a background check on someone who is the head of the department of Defense Intelligence agency that had and did maintain a high level security clearance . Thats it. Reporter but flynn was fired by the Obama Administration in 2014 and nbc news has learned the trump transition did do its own background check on flynn and hired him anyway. Now, the pentagons Inspector General saying it opened an investigation into flynn earlier this month over payments he received from a speech in russia in 2015 and lobbying work for turkey last year. Also this morning making news from that interview, President Trump acknowledging he misses life before he entered the white house. Take a listen. I loved my previous life. I had so many things going. I actually this is more work than in my previous life. I thought it would be easier. I thought it was more of a im a details oriented person. I think you would say that. But i do miss my old life. This i like to work, so thats not a problem, but this is actually more work. Reporter more than five months after his victory, the president says he misses driving and now feels like hes living in a cocoon. Back to you. Thank you very much. U. S. Attorney general Jeff Sessions is with us now. Good morning. It is great to see you. Let me start with a simple question. Was Michael Flynn properly vetted by the Trump Transition Team before being named the president S National Security advisor . Well, they work hard on vetting. They do the best they can. It is impossible to know everything. I dont know what they did in that case, and im not aware and im not involved in studying it. But there are investigations underway. If it turns out that general flynn lied on his paperwork for that application or if he continued to work for a foreign interest while he was the National Security advisor, he may have committed a felony. And it will fall on your department to decide whether to prosecute him or let him go. You have already recused yourself from investigations involving any coordination between Trump Associates and russian officials. Does that recusal extend to this area, to general flynn . My recusal deals with the Campaign Issues, but i would expect im not to be involved in this one. You would recuse yourself with any decision dealing with general flynn . Yeah. I really dont know whether there is an investigation or should be and we dont confirm investigations in the department of justice. Real quickly, his Attorney Says he has a story to tell, and they have asked for immunity in exchange for testifying. Should he be given immunity . Well see the. The people who have the authority to decide that will decide that. The president just recently gave an interview and talked about this investigation, from which you have recused yourself and he said that russia is a faux story. It is made up. Democrats lost an election and they used the russia story as a way of justifying how they lost. It is a fake story. Your department of justice is, in fact, investigating whether or not the Trump Campaign colluded with russia. Is it a take story, or is it a legitimate investigation . Thats to be decided by the new deputy that was confirmed, Deputy Attorney general yesterday. He will follow his lots since i recused myself to make those decisions and i will not comment about the case and you know i cant talk about that case. True, but is it a legitimate area of investigation. Im not going to go into that. I will let the officials discuss it. Do you agree with the president that it is a fake story . Ill let others comment on that. Here we are at the 100day mark and the president gave this interview yesterday and he said about the job of the president , this is more work than in my previous life. I thoue easier. What do you think of that . Well, he it is a tough job. I got to tell you. And he works so hard. I mean, this man has tremendous strength and energy and he works into the night every night and, so, but it is a tough job. My job is a 12hour a day job also. Ive got to tell you. It is exciting and thrilling. You feel like you are making a contribution to america and im sure the president gets satisfaction from that. He may get points for candor saying, hey, this is harder than i thought it would be. Health care is more complicated than i thought, he said. This issue of the dynamics between north korea and china was different than he thought. Should he have been more prepared . I think hes prepared and has a good philosophy and approach to it but carrying out those approaches and going through the minutia and congress and all the problems you have to execute change in america is a real challenge and it is frustrating, im sure, for businessmen on occasion who is used to getting things done quickly. Were doing the lightening round here. The cia director delivered a speech and said it was time to call out wickdy leaks for what it is, a nonstate, Hostile Intelligence Service vetted by state actors like russia. Do you agree . We are having a tremendous problem throughout our system, it seems to me, with leaks. Some of this is very serious. Not just a leak of abuse or theft or some whistle blower approving government. These are direct threats to the techniques and security procedures that our government has. And im worried about it. I think we need to do more to end this. Weve got to step up our efforts. But to the question, do you agree with the director, wikileaks is a state actor working at the beheadst of a state like russia. We are going to follow our responsibility to analyze these matters. The cia director shares with us leaks and things that he thinks are important. And we evaluate them appropriately. But we dont talk about any investigation that we have ongoing. Although it does beg the question then would it bother you that candidate trump would Say Something like i love wikileaks during the campaign . Well, they were putting out information that political information that im sure he valued. But so its okay to embrace that kind of an organization if theyre helping you politically. There are limits on what you can do to take peoples private information off their computers. There are certainly limits of what you can do to share intelligent top secret information with our adversaries. Thats what you call a poll perry of topics. To arkansas now, which carried out its fourth execution in an eightday span last night and the latest is calling for an investigation after the inmate lurched and shook while strapped to the gurney. He appeared to convulse and jerk for up to 20 seconds after the drug was administered. One of his attorneys described that execution as horrifying. He is calling for a full investigation. A spokesman called it an involuntary muscular reaction and said the state is unlikely to call for review. Now to the trip by pope francis to egypt. It is the first visit there by the leader of the Catholic Church in two decades. In the wake of recent terror attacks on christian churches, security is a huge concern. Reporter good morning. In just over an hour, the pope will join a procession to his church that was attacked by an isis bomber in december. You can see why many here are anxious and excited for this trip. He was driven straight to meet the president of egypt cht his route lined with security. The pope arriving in cairo this morning, met by high security, greeting journalists onboard the plane, telling him this is a trip of unity and brother hood. Isis structure chs here weeks ago and isis urged its followers to Slaughter Christians. The pope recording his own video message. I come as a friend, a messenger of peace. The pope is calm and we are calm. You know, we go there. We take the necessary precautions and the local security also takes care of us. Egypts security was criticized just this month after bombs hit two churches in separate cities on palm sunday. 47 died. Another attack before christmas captured on security footage. A church packed with worshippers and then an explosion. Today the pope driving straight to meet egypts hard line president , who has supported the christian community. More muslims are killed by islamic terrorism than any other groups. The middle easts largest christian community. What about the victims . The kids, the babies . Killing people for what . Catholics are a small minority. We are asking ourselves if the pope will come in these conditions, and he, himself, said i am coming to egypt. Today he will reach out to all faiths. He will join peace and love. Christians fearful, but defiant. Despite the isis threat, churches in cairo this week packed. Meanwhile, officials tell me there is concerns that isis fighters have been returning to egypt and the government has been criticized by human Rights Groups for a crack down on opposition leaders and journalists. Matt . All right. Thanks very much. Here at home were learning more about the settlement reached between United Airlines and a passenger dragged off his flight for refusing to give up his seat. Tom, good morning to you. Reporter good morning. United airlines is hoping now that the turbulence caused by this Public Relations dedockle will start to debeet. Tlement in lightening speed, less than three weeks since this incident occurred. This morning United Airlines is saying its pleased to have reached an amicable resolution of what it calls this unfortunate incident. That incident, the brutal dragging of dr. David dau that caused him to lose two teeth and suffer a broken nose and concussion. Details of the settlement are not being made public, but dr. Daus lawyers writing in a statement in part united has taken full responsibility for what happened on flight 3411 without attempting to blame others. United is to be applauded. The airline now promising more training for difficult situations, Creative Solutions for agents, fewer overbooked flights and up to 10,000 for passengers willing to be bumped for later flights. We breached public trust and were profoundly sorry for that. The united ceo telling oscar holt, apologizing is not enough. It has to be followed up with action. Were going to put the customer at the center of everything we do. Cell phone videos now shining a spotlight on almost everything that happens on board a plane. Like this recent confrontation between a mother and an American Airlines Flight Attendant over the removal of her stroller from the plane which left the woman in tears. Im not really clear on why im being asked to leave this plane. This passenger removed from his flight after getting up to use the rest room during the critical moments while the plane was waiting to tax off, despite instructions to stay seated. My bladder in that moment i realized more than anything i didnt have complete control over. The plane has to return to the gate. Hamilton put on another flight and refunded half the cost of his ticket. The bottom line, if the plane is moving on the ramp, youve absolutely got to comply with the Flight Attendants instructions. Thank you. Kind of lesson this morning on how not to approach a gas station. A car comes barrelling in. It slams into the gas pump, knocking it on to the car in the next lane. The man that was pumping gas got out just in time. Fortunately there wasnt a fire. They believe the driver was fleeing the scene of another car crash moments earlier. They are still looking for another suspect. Something tells me there is more to that story. Lets go to al. Some other folks in the midsection of the country in rough shape. In fact, we are talking about some Severe Weather and flooding over the next 72 hours. You can see the storms already with snow behind it. But look at this.
