Today, wednesday, june 7, 2017. Announcer from nbc news, this is today with matt lauer and Savannah Guthrie live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. Good morning. Welcome to today, 7 00 on the west coast on a wednesday. Thank you for joining us. Its a busy news morning already. A lot going on at home and around the world. Beginning with breaking news out of the white house. The president revealed his pick for a new fbi director. Here is how he did it. He was on twitter this morning saying i will nominate christopher a. Wran, a man of impeccable credentials. Wray would take over for fired fbi director james comey who will be testifying before the Senate Intelligence committee tomorrow. Thats all part of the russia investigation. Weve got this covered starting with nbc justice correspondent pete williams. Pete, good morning to you. What do we know about Christopher Wray . At age 50, one of the younger nominees the president considered. Unlike others, he has Law Enforcement experience in the local and national levels. Graduate of yale and yale law school. After private practice he joined the u. S. Attorneys office early in his career and then came to washington to work in the Justice Department in various senior capacities. He then served as assistant attorney general in charge of the Criminal Division from 2003 to 2005. That was under george w. Bush. During that time, his immediate boss was the Deputy Attorney general, and that person was james comey. Since then he was in private practice, recently in the headlines serving as defense lawyer for governor of new jersey Chris Christie during the bridgegate scandal. The white house says the only finalist was john pistole, the former number two at the fbi and then administrator of the tsa. Pete, thats the classic resume for an fbi director. What do you know about what went on behind the scenes as the president was trying to make this pick . It is not an easy job to fill. You might ask yourself who would want this. We know the white house talked to at least a dozen people and some of them bowed out. For one thing, accepting this nomination is making a tenyear commitment. Thats the nominal term for the fbi director, assuming they dont get fired. Robert mueller, in fact, served a total of 12 years. Fbi and Justice Department career people like the fact that chris wray has federal Law Enforcement experience, he worked closely with local fbi agents in atlanta and then at headquarters as the assistant attorney general. I think people are relieved the president didnt choose a political figure. Now chris wrays main task in his confirmation hearing will be convincing the senate hell be independent of the white house and the president who nominated him. Then, if confirmed, hell have the delicate dance of figuring out his exact role in the russia investigation being run by robert mueller, who knows more about the fbi than probably any other living person. A big job. Pete williams, thank you. New developments. A report then fbi director james comey asked attorney general Jeff Sessions to keep him from being alone with the president ever again, after all this happened after a tense white house meeting. Nbc National Correspondent Peter Alexander is at the white house with that part of the story. Good morning to you. Reporter good morning to you. Insiders are casting tomorrows comey testimony as the political equivalent of the super bowl. Beginning momentarily right now in here in washington, some of the nations top Law Enforcement and intelligence officials are going to testify before that same Senate Intelligence committee. It comes amid new questions about the lengths the president went to try to shut down the russia investigation and new reports that the president s attorney general even offered to resign. 24 hours ahead of james comeys senate testimony, director of National Intelligence dan coats takes his turn in the spotlight. He told associates that trump asked him to intervene with then fbi director comey to get the investigation off the russia, and Michael Flynn. It reports that the president asked everyone to leave the room except for coats and mike pompeo. Coats says he has never felt pressured by the president or anyone. Also this morning, the New York Times reports the day after President Trump asked comey to end his investigation into flynn, comey told attorney general Jeff Sessions he did not want to be left alone again with the president. While comey believed the attorney general should protect the fbi from white house influence, the times reports sessions couldnt guarantee the president wouldnt try to talk to comey alone again. When asked about comeys upcoming testimony, the president said only this. I wish him luck. Reporter sources close to comey tell nbc news, when he testifies thursday, hes likely to detail a pattern of what he believed were inappropriate conversations with the president about the russia investigation, but hes not expected to accuse President Trump of obstruction of justice. White house aides and the president s allies are already looking to contain any potential damage. One protrump group set to air this add attacking comeys credibility. James comey, just another d. C. Insider only in it for himself. Reporter late tuesday the president s son eric lashing out at those who oppose his fathers administration. Ive never seen hatred like this. To me theyre not even people. Its so, so sad. Moverality is just gone, morals out the window. Reporter new details about the president and his attorney general. A source close to the administration describing trumps huge level of frustration with sessions, not just for in his eyes unnecessarily recusing himself from the russia inquiry. But monday morning quarterbacking other things. Sean spicer refusing to say whether the president has lost confidence in sessions. I have not had a discussion with him about that. Reporter again, multiple reports ha the attorney general Jeff Sessions offered to resign at one point in recent months after his relationship with the president grew increasingly tension. The New York Times reporting that sessions told President Trump he needed the freedom to do his job. The department of justice is declining the comment. The white house is declining any questions about the russia investigation to the president s outside lawyer. Matt and savannah. Shaf vannah will travel to washington and join chuck and lester tomorrow morning for james comeys testimony. Well have special live coverage on the nbc stations starting at 10 00 eastern time. Theyve been fighting not only in that part of the middle east, but in syria. The question is beyond the adversarial nature of their relationship, now that theres actual wli terrorism in the borderers of iran itself, the capital of iran, what retaliation might there be . The concern of u. S. Officials is that iran would retaliate not just against isis elements, but against the Saudi Arabian government, a key u. S. Partner in the region.
