Its a new form of ransom ware thats targeting people around the world. Computer experts now racing to try to stop it. Nbc kir sim summons here with the latest on that. Good morning. Reporter good morning rnths its unclear who is behind this attack. The full impact is difficult to gauge. This morning the list of Companies Impacted around the world is growing. This morning, an International Cyber attacked has reached americas shores, the global virus called petya, taking control of computers and demanding digital ransom from their owners to regain fact says. Experts say, even if they pay, they may not get control of their systems, merck, the Worlds Largest shipping Company Maersk and a shipping plant switched to manual to protect against attack. Two hospitals in western pennsylvania were hit. Patients posting on social media saying some surgeries were chance emed. This is a highly profitable business. We have to remember organized cyber crime totals up to almost 445 billion on an annual basis. Reporter the outbreak is the latest and perhaps the most sophisticated in a series of attacks, making use of dozens of hacking tools that were stolen from a National Security agency and leaked on p online by a group called the shadow brokers. Its fast spreading. We are seeing the ukraine, initially the u. S. , india and uk and ought countries as the worm is spreading around. So what can all of us do to protect ourss . Ous long complicated passwords, keep your operating system and Antivirus Software up to date. Regularly back up your computer on an external drive and of course never click on suspicious emails or web link sites. Part of that had vice over and over again, people still do it. Kir, thanks very much. We have another major story, Republican Leaders are voicing confident in the future of their Controversial Health care bill. That after a white house meeting with President Trump just hours after suddenly delaying a planned vote. We have complete coverage beginning at the white house with nbc National Correspondent peter alexander. Good morning. Reporter hey, hoda. It is back to the drawing board for Senate Republicans who insist they will keep at it after the embarrassing delay. For the house that extra time helped them pass the bill. The same may not hold true for the senate. They are likely to get an earful from opponents as they head home for a break. As a Top Republican admitted before it bailed the longer this goes the harder it gets. This morning after a stunning setback for the Gop Health Care bill, Top Republicans say they arent giving enough. Everybody around the table is interested in getting a yes. Interested in getting an outcome. Reporter President Trump touting progress and strategy on his partys effort to push through an obamacare repeal. We are getting close. But for the country, we have to be health care, if we dont get it done, it will be something were not going to like and thats okay. Reporter later tweeting, i just finished a great meeting with the republican senators concerning health care. They really want to get it right, unlike obamacare. The Senate Majority leader pulling the bill he promised be i the end of this week. Were continued to talk about it. Its a very complicated subject. Reporter further complicateing matters, at least nine gop senator os posed the bill when the party could only afford to lose two. As the republicans reboot the challenge doesnt disappear. Finding a bill that satisfies conservatives who complained it didnt go far enough. The current bill looks like were keeping large parts of obamacare. Reporter and those closer to the center anxious about medicaid cuts. I cannot support a bill that is going to result in tens of millions of people losing their health insurance. Reporter among the opponents, utahs pike lee, echoing a democratic line of attack, highlighting thousand first draft of the bill included hundreds of billions of dollars in tax cuts for the affluent. Now some moderate republicans urging their leaders to change course. When did we get to the point where we said, no, were not going to talk to democrats about a fix. We should be working on the other side of the aisle. Reporter a lot of people think a bipartisan plan is the way to go . So what is next . Top republicans tell us their goal is to come up with an agreement, a revamped bill at the end of this week, while lawmakers are away for the fourth of july recess, which would set a vote, if they come up with the votes when they get back. All right. Thanks. Also, amid mounting tension with the u. S. Over claims syria is planning a possible new capital weapons attack, what is being called an act of defiance from the regimes leader, White House CorrespondentKristen Welker has that story. Good morning. Reporter matt, good morning to you. The white house is not only warning syria against another chemical weapons attack this morning. It is also putting iran and russia on notice, too, that they will bear some responsibility if syria does act. This all comes as the president s Foreign Policy is coming under fresh scrutiny. Syrian president Bashar Alassad making a rare appearance outside damascus, touring a russian base in syria and climbing into a fusion fighter jet. The decision coming as defiance after the u. S. Put its regime on notice over a capital weapons plot. Sean spicer telling assad in a statement, if he conduct another chemical weapons attack, he and his military will pay a heavy price. It came as a surprise to senior official, they say they were caught off guard by the threat and a military action, a major step. Some of the defense in the state department stress they were aware of the intelligence, now the white house is pushing back arguing all necessary officials were alerted. Was there a principles meeting, a deputys meeting before that was issued . I know there was a routine meeting that took place. Reporter but this isnt the first time President Trump may have kept some in his own team guessing when it comes to Foreign Policy, one of the president s very first actions is this controversial travel ban targeting residents of seven muslim nations was announced after limited consultation among the affected agency. Mr. Trump then signed off on a raid in yemen, over dinner with a few key advisers, but the disconnect was publicly on display earlier this month when saudi arabia announced an embargo against qatar, a key american allie, trump secretary of state criticized the move the president tweeted his approval and blafrted qatar from the rose garden. The nation of qatar, unfortunately, has been a funder of terrorism. Reporter the white house, however, is on the same page when it comes to a strategy on facing the press. After days of refusing to answer questions on camera, this Tense Exchange between a journalist and deputy secretary Sarah Huckabee sanders after she slammed coverage. News outlets get to go on day of day and cite unnamed sour were here to ask you questions. Youre here to provide the answers. And what you just did is inflammatory to people all over the country who look and say, see, once again. The president is right and everyone else is fake media. And everyone in this room is trying to do their job. Reporter as for the president s Foreign Policy, a senior says its not accurate hes not with his principals on all key policy issues. And syria, we may learn about that as nikki haley appears on capitol hill at a preplanned hearing. Matt, hoda . All right, kristen. Thank you very much. Lets bring in chuck todd. Chuck, good morning to you. Good morning, matt. The house had a hiccup when it came to their health care bill. They went back to work. Then they passed that bill. Now the senate has pulled the vote. Are we seeing deja vu or Something Different . I think its slightly different in this case. Look, the one advantage the white house had in the house is that the president does have some ability to lean on house members. Hes popular in a lot of the house districts. He had an ability, many of them share the same political base. Many felt they had to listen to the white house. The difference here in the senate, is the senators are much more independent actors. The idea of the white house leaning on them actually, you know, almost emboldens them to push back. I would never write off Mitch Mcconnells ability to get anything through the senate. He defied the odds and pulled off the Supreme Court issue he did last year and ended up getting a conservative Supreme Court justice. The guy knows how to maneuver legislatively. If it was anybody else, this morning we would be saying this bill is dead. Only because Mitch Mcconnell is so good at behind the scenes aspects of this, is this thing on life support. A lot of the senators will be going home for the july break. Theyre going to be seeing their constituents. Does this extra time help the passage of the bill. This is not wine. It does not get better over time. This is a bill that gets harder to support over time. This is why Mitch Mcconnell so badly wanted in to be done in a week. You know . A shock and awe sort of legislative strategy. Introduce it on a thursday and vote on it and get out of town. Now, you have the mobilization of opposition groups. Any of the republican senators that decides to have a public event over the fourth of july, theyre probably going to be hounded by protesters. Probably going to be hounded by constituents. I dont think time is on the side of Mitch Mcconnell. They have a week to get this done. Or theyre going to have to admit, they have to work with the democrats. Chuck todd. Thank you very much. You got it, guys. Theres a lot more to get to, including a lawsuit being filed against the makers of highway guardrails. Theyre supposed to keep you safe. But do they actually pose a deadly safety risk. Heres nbcs catie beck. Reporter thursday will be exactly one year since lauren and her friend Jacob Davison were killed when their car plowed into a highway guardrail. Laurens mother remembers seeing her for the last time. I called her name one more time and waved. Thats the last time i saw her alive. Reporter lauren was 21 years old, just out of college. She was just so wonderful. Reporter as part of their investigation, officials looked at the metal barriers. The guardrail went through the car. Its not supposed to do that. Reporter gamble blames this piece at the end of the guardrail for the deadly outcome. In your mind, do you think there could have been a different result had that guardrail been different . Issue from absolutely, yes. Reporter in 2016, four families lost loved ones on tennessee highways in similar crashes. Three are expected to file suit against the guardrail manufacturer, the lindsay corporation. Claiming its guardrail didnt collapse on impact, like the one in this video from the companys website. The failure of that system is piercing through and acting as an impaling system, killing the occupants of the vehicle. Reporter lindsay defends its guardrail, saying it meets all federal safety standards. And that the federal Highway Administration found no reason to conclude that the xlite is unsafe, write in a statement to nbc news that reads in part, the equipments inability to singly prevent every tragedy does not indicate a flaw or defect. There are a variety of factors that contribute to the severity of impact in any instance. The fha told us theyve alerted every state following the tennessee incidents and are now monitoring xlite performance across the country. Gamble says she doesnt want other families to suffer like they have. We want to save other families from this pain. Lauren would want that. She would want a difference in this world.
