Thanks for having me on well really appreciate it and how do you respond to that I know you ve heard that argument 15000 different ways after every mass tragedy like this how do you respond to that argument well it s the 2nd amendment that s responsible for that for that killing in Texas well I mean in general I don t I m not I don t argue 2nd Amendment to me the bottom line is what makes people safer or not right and obviously guns make it easier for bad things to happen but they also make it a lot easier for people to protect themselves from prevent bad thing from happening than you know to me. You look at the mass public shootings that have been occurring the big thing that determines how many people get killed or injured in these attacks is a long it takes between when the attack starts and somebody is able to arrive on the scene with a gun or hopefully already there I mean my only wish is that somebody inside the church that has a gun to be able to go and protect themselves I don t know yet whether this church banned it in Texas it s up to the individual churches to decide whether or not allow people to have concealed carry in the church or not right but you know. I here s the problem and that is. These killers will find different ways of going in killing people they re going to get weapons and if you have restrictions you have to be careful you re not going to be primarily disarming good law abiding citizens so when you have these gun free zones for example it s the law abiding good citizen who base them not the criminal and that rather than making places safer for the victim you unintentionally make it safer for the person who s going to be going doing the attack. No that s right now and then I want you know I think your voice has been so powerful your written work so powerful including more guns less crime because you approach it from that very well supported basis as an economist yourself and I think most of the audience are familiar with how highly accomplished you are I mean truly it would take 25 minutes to read just the highlights on our gas bio but but when you look at it in that kind of of logical fashion where does that ultimately lead you in terms of of of the best public policy in terms of of Ideally you know what percentage of the population do you think would need to be well armed and well trained before we could make a big dent in the number of these mass attacks that we see. Well you know I m not sure I have an exact number but what I will say is that we have about 16 and a half 1000000 Americans who have concealed carry permits I d like to have it be a little bit higher that s about 6 and a half percent of the adult population but it s important thing is that people care and they don t want Israel has terrorist attacks one thing that the national police do is they get on the media and they say you know please make sure anybody legally able to go and carry carries with them all the time because you never know when these types of attacks are going to be occurring and it s tragic that we live in a world where people kill you know innocent parishioners says a church that there but there are evil people out there and you know this isn t just something that the United States deals with people who go to our Web site or they could see. If you look at the last few types of attacks that we ve had before we know anything people are calling for specific types of gun regulation we had after the truck attack in New York City last week we had people within our calling for gun control regulations before they even knew what had happened in that situation you know we had people Yesterday senators and others calling for more gun control regulation within just a few hours of the attack and the thing is I really wish once in a while somebody in the media would say Ok after each of these attacks President Obama now you and others keep on talking about background checks universal background checks some private transfers right can you name me one just one mass public shooting over the last you know 2 decades or so that would have been stopped if that type of regulation had been in effect we had people calling for yesterday when you had it turns out that the guy bought a gun at a gun store and you know but here s the problem also and that is people don t put too much faith in things like a background check you know if somebody this guy s planning this attack apparently least a year and a half. Enough. People know I m going to find a way a bunch. Of people know how it is to so I assume Well the very same source for illegal drugs is the same source drug gangs for illegal guns and so the notion that somehow. We concede that you re not going to be able to stop people from be able to go and buy illegal drugs it shouldn t be any more serious that you really think you re going to be able to stop people from buying illegal gun great point to generalize Jr Our special guest author of the war on guns as well as more guns less crime before we extend that that points are you mentioned 16500000 concealed carry holders permit holders in America right now I practice I m Atlee how many guns weapons of all types are in circulation in America what would your best estimate way be we don t really know I mean nobody really knows the difference between concealed carry permits is that you actually have a permit that you have to have and we can count that you know there are 14 states now that in all or virtually all the state you don t require a permit so I can t even tell you how many people legally carry in the United States I just know that it s something well above 16500000 when you include those other 14 states right but you know people say anything from 300000000 to whatever you know the big problem that we have is that the only way you have any idea about gun ownership rates general air through a survey and I ve been come more and more convinced over time that those surveys are pretty useless I mean you ll see a survey done after a mass public shooting and the percentage of the people who say they own a gun can fall by 7 percentage points well does anybody really believe that let s say after Newtown. You know there was a massive drop I mean so let s say you have 44 percent of the population that says they own a gun you know Well basically you re talking about something like you know 18 percent of gun owners were supposedly just getting rid of their guns within a month or 2 that they believe that you know I don t even with adding weapons at that point you know what that s what you see you see a guy. Sales go up you don t see people trying to get rid of all the guns that they have and you see other things in the survey like. Married women tell pollsters that guns are owned in the home at a much lower rate than married women than married men do now could be that the married men just aren t telling their wives that they ve begun to know but my guess is what is more likely option is that. The women just aren t as comfortable about telling some stranger on the phone whether they own a gun in the home men or the young man might share noise and people very certain about who you are talking to generalize like Jr Our special guest of course author of the war on guns and more beyond that as you know sir a lot of folks I mean you have the politically motivated who simply want to do way with 2nd Amendment limit guns etc You have another group of folks who are very well intentioned maybe just haven t thought a lot about the issue haven t studied the issue it s at are very well intentioned and say but but what about the rates of of accidental discharge all the children you know killed through gun handling accidents it cetera do you have a sense of those numbers and how they stack up. Sure you know we have a pretty good measure of those numbers the last year that the Centers for Disease Control has put those numbers together for 2015 and in that year for children under age 15 there were 48 x. The gun deaths in the United States about 48 acts of gun deaths is 48 too many and no gun deaths but you know it s not the type of case where people have this image of a young child getting ahold of a gun and accidentally shooting themselves or another child about 2 thirds of that is probably. Adult males in their mid to late twenty s who have criminal histories who are either drug addicts or alcoholics who many of them are have lost their driver s licenses because of problems that they ve had with drinking and what have you So these are not normal people that you have there and it s very difficult to stop an adult male Many of these cases dilute legal for them to own a gun to begin with. From firing their own gun right and so if you re talking about accidental deaths in law abiding home. You don t have somebody with a criminal record who s firing the gun you re talking about in x. No death rates in homes from guns that s akin to children in those homes dying from lightning strikes right now. You know there are things that you do in order to try to avoid lightning strikes you tell your kid don t go out into an open field when there s lightning and hold an umbrella up above your head Ok You know you don t go underneath the one tree in the field hurt something like that when there s a lot of lightning just simple common sense type thing not like the odds are incredibly high to begin with why tempt fate on these things so what I would argue is that if you were going to ask most people you know given that we have something like maybe 140000000 Americans adults who live in homes with guns who are so. You know what would you think would be the accidental death rate that would be there and my guess is most people would pick a number that would be a lot higher than the 48 well you know my number would have been much higher and so . What I would argue is than fact. People are being pretty responsible particularly if you kind of take out the criminal and drug type elements that you have there that are associated with a disproportionate number of cases but give me one story if you ever watched Bowling for Columbine by. Michael Moore you know on the Bears to say I haven t met my producer Kurtz nodding his head yes but I have not Ok well I m kind of forced to watch these such a thing so you should feel better trust me I wish I hadn t wasted my time but he has one discussion in there where he there s a child that he talks about a 6 year old who took a gun to school and fatally shot another 6 year old and interviews the mother and interviews some other people about it any you know it s a tragic situation he just leaves out so many important fans so for example the mother was a drug addict you know she wasn t at home with the kid she had let her brother take care of her child her brother ran a crack house and the 6 year old was staying at the crack house in one of the customers for the crack house had passed out on the floor and had had his gun next to a sign and the kid had picked it up on the way to school and taken it with him so you know. It gives a different flavor sure to it to kind of include those types of fans I m sure it was a yeah it just wasn t in our to you know you got to make it in cut someplace. To you know. Not to include those types of things because you wanted to make it appear that this is something that could happen to anybody but most people s kids are left under 10 didn t crack out right right now John r. Well look this is something you see regularly with concealed carry permit holders seeing a number of mass public shootings that have been stopped by criminal holders without them firing their gun. You know permit holders are very law abiding individuals they know that they have a lot to lose if they behave irresponsibly and maybe they re too cautious on these things but they re not there surely not the type of you know shoot from the hip type person that there I ve been trying to find out more about the case of tell you one thing the Denver Post article was a mess oh my goodness right now on this horrible contradicts itself over the place so in one part. Of the story they talk about how it created more work for the police because people drew their guns and then the last half of the article was criticizing people for not drawing their gun right right. Yeah it was like the guy the reporter there was trying every possible way in every case to make it is negative as he couldn t even know contradicted what he had in the previous couple paragraphs No that s right in the underlying premise that somehow law enforcement was delayed in identifying the actual shooter because other drew guns is simply false I called over I talked to the officer of a lot of public information officer and know that they weren t delayed in going in turning on the tape and watching that person fired of course they had to check other people out as well but they were delayed in identifying him so God love you for picking up on that it was such an unfair shock because the way I look at it sir John are like Junior special guests everybody in that store was a victim including everybody who pulled their gun and for the Denver Post to now mock and criticize victims in that store for the post to pursue their anti-gun agenda I think is is really highly irresponsible and just wrong. Well I mean you just hope reporters have some integrity to want to go and get things right but I mean the thing is it s not it s not even smart because it right I would think 90 percent of the people would say well you know didn t you just say it was the opposite in these early few paragraphs in the same story I mean not even like they kind of putting opposite arguments in different articles or putting it in the same article that s there and so you know. But I m glad you called up on that actually talk to somebody else about trying to follow up on that would be nice if the media would write up some type of story if you know somebody who can do that just so others can cite it because. Anyway there s been no somebody coming reciprocity because it s a general concern that gets raised about you know if you re talking about concealed carry in colleges or other places other places have been gun free zones the argument is that if you let people carry permit concealed handguns when you have a mass shooting the police will arrive and they ll shoot the permit holder or the permit holder will shoot a bystander I collect the types of cases I can t find a single case where police officers arrived on the scene where a mass public shooting has been stopped by a permit holder and there are dozens of these cases people who go to our Web site of crime research study or when we have a list of these cases and you know it just.
