I just went on and on and suddenly im 56. So i have to write from this unique perspective of somebody who never stopped being 20. David bowie showed creative artists how to live a career, how to make your art your life. Look up here im in heaven reporter he released his final album black star just last week with the single lazarus and a haunting image of the biblical figure who rose from the dead. David bowie will live on. Reporter in a body of music without equal, a hero to generations of fans. Well, its always been its been said that david bowie was always changing like a chameleon. He wasnt a chameleon because a chameleon changes to blend in. He was perhaps summed up by his song rebel rebel. I bought his first album when i was 12. I was a huge fan and like all these fans, ill miss him. Savannah. I feel the same way, bill. Thank you so much for your story. Lets turn to joe levy, a contributing editor of Rolling Stone and incoming on spotify. Good morning to you. Good morning. First of all, was it well known that he had this struggle with cancer because i have to say the news came as such a shock to me and i think so much of us. Yes. This was not known at all. This was a private matter, and its interesting. The album, it would have been reviewed so differently just last friday on his birthday when black star, his latest record, was released. People would have received it so differently if they had known of his illness. Clearly its a record that faces and faces down the question of mortality, but the decision to keep all of this private allowed the art to come out, to be evaluated and to speak for itself. Art. I mean it is hard dwroefr state his contribution to music, to fashion, to culture. What did david bowie do for this world . Well, quite simply he was one of rocks first selfconscious artists. He looked at everything he did as art, the way he dressed, the way he lived his life, his sexuality. He pushed boundaries all the time, and uniquely he was an inspiration to people in the 70s, in the 80s, in the 90s constantly changing. Changes is one of his best known songs. Its a theme song for him, that idea of shifting, of constantly being on the move and embracing all sorts of different sounds, rock n roll, dance music, noise, all these things. We have david bowie to thank for all of that. Well, i was going to say one measure of somebodys success and impact is how Young Artists and new artists have taken what are there people out there in music today or even in the last few decades who you say, oh, david bowie did that first . Yes. Youre tempted to say everyone, but if you look at say lady gagas first record, you look at this record where she is selfconsciously mimicking david bowies looks, his iconography, the way he dressed because she the start im going to be a shape shifter. Nirvana covered A David Bowie performances on an mtv live performance. Kanye west tweeted that david bowie was an inspiration to him. And, of course, would we have madonna, another artist whose career is about fame, celebrity, and shapeshifting without david bowie to blaze a trail for her, probably not. In just a few second s have left, when you talk about the new record, the song lazarus released on his birthday, obviously he knew the state of his health. It seemed like he was giving that to the art world as well. Thats absolutely right. This is a unique moment. As many, many musicians get older and face mortality, weve seen a lot of records thinking about getting older and mortality abstractly, but in this case specifically, someone who knew the end was coming, who had for the last 18 months lived with that knowledge and decided to face it down with his art, with a record that is challenging, thats been warmly received as A David Bowie record, a classic david bowie record. That is a fitting testament to an artist of this nature. Well, he will be missed. Joe levy, thank you so much for sharing your perspective this morning, we so appreciate it. Thanks. Bowies longtime producer put out a statement saying this album, in fact, was his farewell to the world. Well have much more on the bit later. Other winners of the night, Jennifer Lawrence, of course, for best comedic actress in joy and kate winslet for her washington honored with a Lifetime Achievement award, the cecil b. Demille award. Big night for the revenant and the martian and so many people when we did the red carpet said were rooting for sly stallone. So happy to see him get the pretty awesome. Ricky gervais not surprisingly took a shot at sean penn who was not at the globes this. Comes in the wake of the stunning revelation that he secretly met with the mexican drug lord el chapo while el chapo was on the run after escaping from prison. Well now mexican authorities want to talk to penn about that encounter. Nbcs jacob rascon has more on this story. Jacob, good morning. Reporter savannah, good morning. El chapo is back inside the prison behind me, mexicos top maximum security facility where he escaped last july, but its what happened in between his sean penn that has everyones attention this morning. It is proof, according to actor sean penn, of a scoop nobody saw drug kingpin Joaquin El Chapo guzman, at the time the worlds most famous fugitive, answering questions for a Rolling Stone article in his first interview in decades. The reaction on social media has many finding it impossible that penn would meet el chapo, eat tacos, drink tequila, and talk for seven hours but not turn him in. Mexican Authorities Say penns meeting might have even helped lead them to el chapos hideout in the bloody shootout that ended with his arrest. That and the drug lords apparent infatuation with mexican soap opera star kate del castillo. In a madeforhollywood plot that del castillo who played a drug lord in a popular soap are on Sister Network telemundo. Stars. Reporter here she is last year. What do you do . I kill people all the time. Dont interrupt me. Reporter she also played a series weeds. Mistake. Reporter her connection to the real kingpin apparently letter on twitter she wrote, mr. Cha powe, wouldnt it be cool if you started trafficking with love . You would be the hero of heros. Life is a business, and the only thing that changes is the merchandise. Dont you agree . Guzman reportedly tried to send her flowers, though she never received any. While mexican authorities have said they are looking at whether sean penn faces any legal exposure in mexico, the focus of american Law Enforcement is getting el chapo to the United States, and they called the Rolling Stone article that el chapo allowed to screen before it was published, quote, a side show. Willie. Jacob rascon, thank you so much. Shawn henry is executive assistant director for the fbi and lisa bloom is todays legal analyst. Good morning to you both. Shaun, let me start with you. A lot of people saw the the hand of el chapo and were outraged and wanted to know how did he get so close to the man Law Enforcement has not been able to find . Thats a great question, willie. You know, when i was in the fbi we were actively looking for for el chapo, and i know the resources the u. S. Government but into locating him. Theres been questions about the Mexican Government and if theres been any collaboration with them, if they were complicit with el chapo, but the resources there and the ability to try and track him down, lots of questions here. I know the u. S. Authorities are very, very interested in talking to sean penn. Yeah. And sean penn himself said he thought the dea may be tracking him as he pursued and met with el cha powe. Do you suspect that sean penns meeting had any relationship to the fact that authorities finally did catch up to el chapo . You know, i think thats a high likelihood. U. S. Authorities constantly are looking at tracing digital media, looking at telephones and the like. Penn himself talked about using encryption, using burner phones in which they use them for a day or two and drop them so that they couldnt be tracked, and then theres been some comments in the media by the mexican fact that was one of the ways they were tracking him. So another issue for for penn to be concerned about at this point, willie. And, lisa, a lot of outrage was directed also at sean penn saying wait a minute. You met with this guy and didnt tell authorities about it. Has he opened himself up to any legal action here . Well, based on the fact that we now know absolutely not. He was acting as a journalist for a magazine. Journalists are allowed to meet with people, even criminals, and they are not required to report it. What he cant do is materially help el chapo. If he gave him a dollar. If he helped him strategize, helped him escape or hide. Then he would be in trouble, but im not seeing that right now. All right. And the u. S. Now saying it wants to extradite el chapo to the United States. We shall see. Lisa bloom, shawn henry, thank you both. Thanks. And now to the president ial race with the Iowa Caucuses fast approaching. New polls show both the republican and democratic races there are tightening. Nbc National Correspondent Peter Alexander takes a look at all the political headlines this morning. Peter, good morning. Reporter good morning, savannah. Youve got the president s state of the Union Address tomorrow, the next Republican Debate is later this week, and our new nbc new polls show the republican race is still up for grabs in iowa while the democrats are still duking it out in two key three weeks to go, three races still up in the air. Ted cruz and donald trump neck and neck in iowa. Our brandnew nbc news poll showing cruzs advantage just four points within the margin of error as trump keeps up his attacks on his canadianborn rivals eligibility to be president. Teds going around saying this matter is settled. Its not a settled matter. Reporter even if trump loses in iowa, he insists hes in it for the long haul. Theres no maybes. Theres no maybes. Im not leaving. Youre going straight to the convention. Going all the way. Reporter trumps crushing the competition in New Hampshire at 30 . Instead of uniting behind one establishment candidate, rubio, christie, bush, and kasich are splitting up 44 of the vote. Election, trump has a new warning for the clintons. Keep calling him sexist, and hell keep bringing up the former president s past infidelities. Its a threat. What is it . Its a threat. It is a threat. Of course. I mean i can call it a nicer name, yeah. She was saying he has tendencies towards, sexist and im saying wait a minute, shes married to an abuse sneer Hillary Clinton is dismissing trumps threats arguing for republicans its a dead end. Well, its been fair game going back to the republicans for some years. They can to it again if they want to. That can be their choice as to how to run in this campaign. Didnt work before. It wont work again. Reporter for the moment clinton has her hands full in iowa. Her lead over Bernie Sanders is just three points, and in New Hampshire next door to his home in vermont, sanders is up four. And our new polls also show sanders performs better than clinton does in hypothetical general election matchups in both of those early states as well. Clinton is brushing off a new number. She insists polls go up and go the more electable democrat best suited, in his words, to keep, quote, some right wing extremists from winning the white house. Savannah. All right. Peter alexander in washington, thank you. A reminder, we are taking our entire show to the white house tomorrow. Matt is going to sit down with the president. Well also catch up live with Vice President joe biden. Well show you some rooms rarely seen in public. A special edition of today live from the white house. Thats tomorrow morning. Very cool. Tomorrow al will be doing the weather from the white house. Today, a first check. Weather here in l. A. All right. Speaking of cool, weve got a lot of chilly weather to talk about. This frigid air coming out of canada, and, boy, it is bonechilling. Look at those temperature drops. Were talking 6 degrees below average in detroit, new york city feels like 18 degrees and feels like 18 in charlotte. And heres the difference. 24 hours ago. 24 hours ago it was 26 degrees warmer in d. C. , 15 degrees warmer in new york city, 17 theres another rye enforcing blast of colder air coming in for today. Youll see that air making its way in from minnesota all the way into chicago. So we are going to be in the cold for another 24 hours, and then things start to moderate.
