We are just 16 days away from the 2022 midterms. More than 7 Million People have already voted. And in Congressional Districts across the country, voter interest is at an alltime high. Weve a brandnew poll and found that 70 of our registered voters have a high interest in these upcoming elections. But when it comes to the house of representative, Boast Parties just have one number on their minds, 218. Let me give you a little voter education. 218. That is how many seats are needed for our majority in the house of representatives. And republicans, they have to be in a very good position to reach that goal. They need a net gain of just five seats. Now, that assumes that the democrats keep all the seats that they currently have. That net gain of five, that is the smallest number that out of power party has needed to gain in 80 years. Let me also remind you that this is the First National election under the new Congressional District lives drawn after the 2020 census. Republicans had an advantage there as well. The party had total control over the redistricting in 17 states, including swing states like florida and georgia. Meanwhile, democrats had total control in just seven states. Only one of those states overseen by democrats solved the brandnew district. And with it, a very precious opportunity. Im talking about ors sixth Congressional District, which will elect its very first representative on november 8th. Democrats should be feeling pretty good, right . They drew the lines themselves. But the Elections Team estimates that if the district had existed in 2020, joe biden would have won by 13 points over donald trump. Shouldnt it be a slam dunk for the democrats . Well, in a Midterm Election like no other, nothing should be taken for granted, nothing is guaranteed. Earlier this month, a political report shifted its rating for organ six congressional restrict to a tossup between democratic candidate Andrea Salinas and republican candidate mike erickson. To keep your county blue, you need to have a good turn out, okay . What is your strategy to get out the vote, not just for yourself but all democrats. Operatives are telling me that if you do well, if clark county does well, Catherine Cortez masto might be okay. Simone, you know nevada. You know Congressional District for, which im honored to represent. I am running in a frontline, battleground distract. We have been working for more than a year and i have to talk about the issues that are the most important to voters here from lauren costs to making our Community Safer to creating better paying jobs. We have been talking to voters at the door on the phones, doing texts and making sure that they know how important their voices. We didnt just start this week. We have been doing this work for months. But it counts now. And it is really up to the people to be able to show up, turn out. We are knocking on more than 1 million doors between the efforts of the Nevada Democratic victory, the culinary workers, labor, all the people that it takes to make sure that we reach voters and let them know how important their vote is. Yes this is a midterm and, yes, it matters. That is a lot of doors. 1 million doors is a lot of doors. It strikes me that you want to turn people out to vote, turnout is going to be key in this election all across the country, frankly. But Voting Rights are a big concern across the country and there a concern in nevada. I just read a Washington Post story that talked about Election Supervisors Intent of your state 17 counties that have been forced out or they have announced that they are leaving. You have lower level election staff that has been quitting, citing abuse. How much do these reports concern you . Any attempt to disrupt, deny, dissuade voters from having their vote counted concerns me. Now, i am pleased because here in nevada, because we have a democratic governor, and a democratic legislature, they were able to protect some of the most fundamental protections. We have early voting, mail ballots, people can vote on election day. We have the ability for individuals to register up to and including on election day. But unfortunately, we have Election Deniers that are running for these offices, including my opponent, who denied that donald trump actually lost the 2020 election. And jim marchand, who is running to be the Secretary Of State, who is also an election denier, who wants to oversee the election for future elections. It does concern me. But we are doing everything we can to protect this election the cycle. I spoke with a democratic candidate for Secretary Of State in nevada. We are watching the races up and down the ballot there. Because the political report recently moved your race from leaning democrat to tossup. I looked at 5 38 this morning. It has your polling on average four point behind your republican opponent. Mike erickson. Without naming your opponent, can you tell me why folks in this district should work for you . Thank you so much for having me. This is going to be a tight race and we always knew it was going to be. Even right after the primary. Oregon is much more purple than i think people realize. Im not surprised by this at all. We are fighting hard right now. And truly, there is no choice here in my mind. You know, i have been a fighter for reproductive rights and access to abortion. I have been a fighter to bring down the cost of prescription drugs. And i have been a fighter to make sure that workers have what they need, in terms of living wages, paid family medical leave and all the tools that they need to go back to work. My opponent is anti choice, except when it works for him. And then he wants to give his girlfriend money for an abortion. Let me interrupt you. Folks may not know, but your opponent actually is against a womans ability to make decisions about her own body. It is reported, much like Herschel Walker in georgia, that he paid for the abortion of a girlfriend and it was previously unknown. But it became known in this race. That is right. Absolutely. In fact, he has been to help the Herschel Walker of oregon for that very reason. When it works for him, he is choice. He destroys for himself, but he wants to make sure that women dont have those same choices. I have been a staunch advocate. And oregon women have that choice right now and so, we want to make sure, and i want to make sure, that i protect all women across of america to make those decisions. My sister, when she was 16, she had an abortion. I was the only person in our family who would take her to the clinic and this is personal for me. I know its personal for every woman who makes that decision. I agree. I think its personal for folks across the country. That is why it is such a hot button topic. I want to play some comments from House Speaker nancy pelosi, who, if you are elected, you will be surveying with. She is really projecting confidence that the Democratic Party will keep the chamber in the house. Take a listen. I have been, in the last month or so, to over 20 states. Ive seen on the ground what is happening among the democrats and it is all very positive. They understand that our democracy and our rights are on the ballot, that the planet and its safety is on the ballot, that are economy is on the ballot. Representative, do you feel this positive momentum . We just talked about how tight this races . I do feel that positive momentum because i know that when voters actually get to know me and know the values of the Democratic Party, we win. I just need to do exactly what congressman is talking about two, making sure that we get out there, we talk to voters, we knock on doors, we are Phone Banking and text banking. But when you break that down by party, republicans have a ninepoint advantage at 78 , to democrats 69 . That is a real shift from republicans threepoint advantage last month. And their two point advantage in august. I have to wonder, if you are advising the what particularly would you be saying in these rooms . What concerns you about these numbers . My biggest concern is not the way parties traditionally go after voters that base voter usually as five years of being able to represent receipts that they voted in five elections. You know the base voters are for the Democratic Party . Young voters. By default, young voters do not have a voting history. So, we know that the majority of young voters who we registered in the last election, have not been contacted. They need to focus on that. In 2020, joe biden, when you look at the latino vote, 51 of latinos who voted for joe biden, were either firsttime voters or low because 60 of latinos are under the age of 33. They need a call. Ive been seeing these reports that the number of folks have said they have not been called and key places across the country. That is something to watch. I want to talk about crime. Because it is, and i will use quotes when i say crime, because its a major concern for voters across the board. Everybody. I care about crime. Republicans are using some generalization and lies about what is a complex issue. I think this is really true in pennsylvania, where you have my republican tv doctor turned senate candidate, mehmet oz, and he is really trying to come after Lieutenant Governor john fetterman. This is what fetterman had to say when asked about it. Well, i actually have a record in fighting crime. As mayor here, during four terms, braddock has a significant Gun Violence Issue and i ran in the first place to fight crime and violence. And we went five and a half years without a murder. I am the only candidate that i am actually running on my record on crime. Whereas, doctor oz has never done anything about crime except going around and running a bunch of commercials, lying about my record. John fetterman and matt oz ahead to the debate stage this week. Do you think this message is going to be able to breakthrough . And what will you be watching for . Well, first of all, i will be watching for how this debate is being conducted. We know that one of the central issues in this race, people arent talking about crime, but about John Fettermans stroke, which he is recovering from at the moment. He has returned to the campaign trail, in order to here and to listen to when ive been out on the trail, ive seen a lot of people have a lot of empathy for john fetterman. 800,000 americans have strokes in this country every year. I know someone who has gone through that too. Ive heard from people who say they have no idea if hes actually fit for the job. More the former that the ladder to be clear. [inaudible] we will see doctor oz talk about it. But first and foremost, i will be curious to see how hard he goes on John Fettermans recovery. I will definitely be watching for. That debate this week. I want to bring former congressman Carlos Curbelo of florida into this conversation. Congressman, i think a major point of concern for americans nationwide as the economy. And for many republicans, at least candidates, immigration seems to be a top issue. I recently spoke with marty walsh and i asked him about the link between Immigration Reform and later shortage. I want you to take a listen. I spoke at one of the chamber of congress is in florida and i talked about the need for Immigration Reform. And that people in that room where nodding their heads. We really need to look at comprehensive Immigration Reform. Unfortunately, it has become a political issue and historically, it has not been. If you ask any Major Business in the u. S. , you asked them what they are concerned about, it is employment. The biggest single threat to our economy in 2023 in 2024 is the fact that we dont have comprehensive Immigration Reform and we need it. Immigration is about our economy and it is a way to create pathways to Legal Immigration into our country congressman, i am wondering what is your reaction to the labor secretarys comments . He is absolutely right. We have a Labor Shortage in this country. Everywhere you go, restaurants, hotel, offices, people are complaining about not finding enough workers. And one of the reasons we have so much chaos at the southwest border is because our Legal Immigration system is not working. It is not designed to complement our economy. It is not designed to help american businesses, small and large, succeed. So we do need comprehensive Immigration Reform. The problem is, for too many years, republicans and democrats have preferred the politics of immigration over the solutions for immigration. They prefer to have the issue come Campaign Season instead of solving it so that we can fix it and actually have an economy thats healthy and works for everyone. You know, the Biden Administration has said that next congress, Immigration Reform is one of the things that the president plans to push on very across of louis. That is something definitely to watch. I want to turn to something that happen this week. A federal Appeals Court temporarily blocked President Bidens executive order, granting up to 20 million of student loan forgiveness. The same day, President Biden went on the podium and blasted republicans by name over their critiques. Republican governors wrote me a letter, saying, this relief only helps the elite few. Only the elite view. I knew you are really special, but now you are the elite few. I am serious. Ted cruz, the senator from texas, he says it is for slackers, who dont deserve relief. Who and the hack do they think they are . Maria teresa, recipients have seen the bank spelled out, the airlines, the farmers basically anybody with a Small Business do you think that more democrats should take President Bidens lead here and kind of go out republicans on this issue of Student Loans . I absolutely shame them. The reason is, i need to share with you, i worked on capitol hill when they were doing the major restructuring around bankruptcy back in the late 90s. I just dated myself. The only group that did not have the ability to file Bankruptcy Forgiveness with Student Loans. The banks im sorry. A Small Business loans, but not students. It gives you an idea of who actually at the power in congress when these decisions were granted. And what i really take umbrage with when it comes to the idea that students should not be forgiven, people take out loans, in this case, to bet on themselves, to improve themselves, to say that i am making a bet so i can prosper. Oftentimes, the Student Loans are predatory. But if you decide All Of A Sudden that i am going to make a bet on myself and im going to take out a loan for that and i fail, then i can go ahead and mark that off on my taxes and file for bankruptcy, so every single democrat should absolutely recognize that it is one of the Biggest Barriers to wealth creation, especially in communities of color, when you are strapped with Student Loans. It wears you down. It is heavy and you cant buy that first home if you want to because youre still trying to figure out what you did when you are 18 years old. When you cast your vote this Midterm Election, youre voting for the future of our democracy and my next guest has been Tracking Attacks on Voting Rights for more than a dozen years and he says we have to look back to 2008 to understand what is happening now. He writes in this oped from democracy docket, republicans attack on democracy began with the election of barack obama. Attitudes towards voting change, republicans became concerned that a new coalition of young voters of color would lead the gop republicans focus their attention on restricting voting and settle, but important ways. From there, weve seen countless lawsuits, new restrictive state laws and attacks on poll workers, so lets bring in attorney marc elias, a fighter for Voting Rights. When i did all my Voting Rights work, it was marc elias who i worked with. Lets get into it. You talk about 2008, but 2020 saw the first major explosion of voting and election litigation. According to democracy dockets own tracking, 150 voting and election cases were filed in 2020. Hundred 48 have already been filed this year. You are little getting what forms of Voter Suppression are worrying you the most out there . First of, all thanks for having me on and it is great to see you again. This is unprecedented. When we say that there were 150 lawsuits in all of 2020, that included the six that were filed and lost by donald trump. We are already in excess of that and it is only october and so, what we are seeing is a multi pronged effort by the Republican Party to make voting harder and to subvert Election Results and that includes attacking the role of poll workers, challenging the ability to vote at all. And the use of the court to preemptively try to loosen rules on full challenging and tighten the rules on can we talk about one of the states in particular, georgia, where the states new Election Integrity act has regular citizens challenging the legality of anybody they want to challenge at the polls. I read this story in the guardian yesterday about a College Student who was told that she could not vote regularly. She had to submit a provisional ballot and she was not even giving a reason. She was told somebody challenged her. Georgias Elections Chief has said that cannot happen. But it did happen. Talk to me about whats happening in georgia. What can be done to combat this . This i think is one of the major assaults on free and fair access to the ballot box right now. It is and it is a National Scandal. It is a National Scandal that in 2022, we are witnessing mass voter challenges. We saw the origins of this in the january runoff election, where Reverend Warnock and jon ossoff won their elections and helped democrats take power in the senate. In the run up to those runoff elections, we sorrowful gets challenge in excess of 250,000 voters eligibility. That was the largest Mass Challenge in the history of the country, at least back until Freedom Summer in 1964. You wouldve thought that the national would have been to do away with that. Instead, the georgia legislature, a bill championed by signed an expansion of the ability to file a Mass Challenge. Just to be clear, these are challenges not of people you know, not people you have met, these are just spreadsheets of names that are being submitted two counties to try to disenfranchise voters in we have already seen more than 80,000 voters challenge this way in georgia and, again, its not yet election day and this is a travesty. It is a National Scandal. It is Voter Suppression and we need to stand up against it. Mark, i know you are doing a lot of work to stand up against it, but before you go, if people are having trouble at the polls, what do they do . Is there a number they can call . Who do they reach out to . Yeah, so, vote dont be deterred. Dont be suppressed. Vote No Matter What. Vote like democracy is at stake because it is. Were at this point where we have factions in this country that are posing as patriots, but theyre actually traitors and they are doing their darndest to make sure that they undermine our system of elections. Iotas will be out in force on election day, making sure that we are at the polls and people have the right and the can exercise a role because we know in some states, north south, east and west, there will be intimidating i call this a provisional ballot earlier. But theyre all over the country, right . If you have not received one in the mail, what you should do is go to your county board of elections. Its critically important that you read your Sample Ballot because this election isnt just about congressional races. You need to look up and down the ballot. We know hundreds of thousands of dollars are being poured into local school board races, so with issues of curriculum and banning books, all of this is important. You need to know what is on your ballot. You need to know whos running. You need to read those Ballot Questions about the constitutional amendments because we also know that theres an effort to undermine state constitutions. So, the reason why Sample Ballots are important is because many voters just walk into a boot and pull the lever without first having reviewed their Sample Ballot. Some voters dont even know how to vote because now its electronic voting, a lot of people are not accustomed to using the new voting machines. So, your simple ballot is really Election Guide and if you have not received one, i urge you to contact your county board of elections because as a registered voter, you are entitled to receive a Sample Ballot before the actual election. I dont think her intention was to do that, but i also feel like even if that is not your intention and people are offended, that is something you should address.
