Security prison so he cant be tracked. And todays the big day. The Worlds Largest jackpot ever, powerball is just hours away. First look starts right now. And good morning everybody. Thanks for being with us. Im shannon mulaire. Developing overnight, two u. S. Navy boats and the ten american crew members on board have been detained by Iranian Military forces. The two small vessels, similar to these, were headed to bahrain when one of them reportedly developed mechanical issues, and the other attempted to render aid. They both then drifted off course into iranian territorial waters off farsi island in the persian gulf. U. S. Officials say the crew, nine men and one woman, are expected to be released back to the u. S. U. S. Authorities have been in touch with iranian officials, who have confirmed for us a couple of things. First theyve confirmed that our sailors are safe. And theyve assured us that our sailors will be allowed to resume their journey. And for more now we turn to nbc in tehran. Good morning ali. Good morning, shannon. Thats right. The Iranian Revolutionary guard have confirmed that they have ten american sailors. They say that they seized the two vessels which strayed into iranian waters initially the revolutionary guard said that they were snooping around iranian territorial waters and acting suspiciously. But now revolutionary guard admiral has said that after an extensive investigation theyve concluded that the boat had navigation failure and accidentally strayed into iranian waters. It wasnt here for espionage purposes or any other harmful purposes. Now, we were expecting them to be released this morning. They havent been released yet. But irans power system is multilayered, which means lots of layers of bureaucracy to get through and thats possibly one of the reasons they havent been released yet. But their release also comes with a warning. Irans army chief said this should be a warning to troublemakers in congress who want to impose more sanctions on iran. Back to you, shannon. All right. We are waiting. And hopefully that delay isnt much longer. Ali, thank you. We, the people, have a lot to consider this morning following president obamas final state of the union address. Slightly older, noticeably grayer than his address in 2009, the focus was on major issues facing our future, and in a less obvious way, the 2016 election. Let me start with the economy and a basic fact. The United States of america, right now, has the strongest, most durable economy in the world. Last year Vice President biden said that with the new moon shot, america can cure cancer. Tonight im announcing a new National Effort to get it done and because hes gone to the mat for all of us on so many issues over the past 40 years im putting joe in charge of mission control. For the loved ones weve all lost, for the families that we can still save, lets make america the country that cures cancer once and for all. I told you earlier all the talk of americas economic decline is political hot air, so is the rhetoric about the enemies getting stronger and america getting weaker. The world will look to us to help solve these problems. And our answer needs to be more than tough talk. More calls to carpet bomb civilians. That may work as a tv sound bite but it doesnt pass muster on the world stage. I will keep working to shut down the prison at guantanamo. It is expensive, it is unnecessary, and it only serves as a recruitment brochure for our enemies. When politicians insult muslims, whether abroad or our fellow citizens, when a mosque is vandalized, or a kid is called names, that doesnt make us safer. Thats not telling it what telling it like it is. Its just wrong. Its one of the few regrets of my presidency. That the rancor and suspicion between the parties has gotten worse instead of better. I believe we have to reduce the influence of money in our politics. So that a handful of families and hidden interests cant bankroll our elections. I believe in change because i believe in you. The american people. And thats why i stand here as confident as i have ever been that the state of our union is strong. Thank you. God bless you. God bless the United States of america. All right. Weve got some breaking news at this moment right now. Were hearing that those u. S. Sailors have been released by iran. Lets go back to nbcs Tehran Bureau chief for that breaking news. What can you tell us . Thats right, shannon. Iranian revolutionary guard has just issued a statement through their Public Relations office saying that theyve conducted a thorough investigation, that they found that the sailors activities was not suspicious, and that theyve released them into International Waters just now. So, were hearing from the revolutionary guard themselves that they have released the sailors into International Waters and it appears that the incident is over and no harm has been done, thankfully. Shannon. Is there any way to confirm that through United States officials at this point . Or will there be a process of them coming back and meeting with u. S. Officials at any point later in the day . Im sure the sailors will be meeting with u. S. Officials, but i dont think it will be long. If it is, indeed, true which i think it is that they have been released because theyve issued the statement across state media in iran. I think it will be just a matter of a short time before the state Department Also confirms their release. Now, the sailors will probably have to go through a briefing, and all of those sort of procedures, once they touch base again. But none of them seem to be in harm. Theyre all in good health, and on their way back to the main ship. So it looks like the incident has ended without any harm, without turning into a Major International incident, and i think thats what the rue hannitys government in iran were very keen to happen, because they wanted to the nuclear deal, which is being finalized right now, to stay on track. Any idea, ali, at this point, we had expected this to happen hours ago. Potentially even yesterday. Do we know at this point what the delay was . Well, as i said to you, its a multilayered system here, the power system in iran, and they probably had to go through various different layers to make sure that the very highest authorities in the country had signed off on their release. Thats obviously happened. The top echelons of irans power system have obviously signed off on it and let these guys go. Saying several times that they werent here trying to spy or do anything suspicious. So trying to calm the situation down as much as they can here. But as i also mentioned to you earlier, it came with a warning. Irans army chief also said that this should be a warning to troublemakers in congress, not to think about imposing new sanctions on iran. So, a happy ending, but a warning to the u. S. With it. Shannon . All right ali arousei reporting for us on that breaking news from iran. Thank you very much. Those ten american crew members, nine men and one woman have been released by iran. Well continue to follow that developing story. The jackpot for tonights powerball drawing has reached a staggering 1. 5 billion. Lotto officials expect sales to accelerate as the 11 00 p. M. Eastern drawing gets closer. With a prize that large it is hard to resist. Nbcs jay gray joins us live outside of chicago. Jay, buying any more tickets or just the one . No i think im going to buy throughout the day. Im just going to scatter my purchases. Maybe have a better chance. Thats my lucky way to do it. Look, throughout the day today thousands will pack markets just like this one across the country, sure theyll be getting coffee, maybe a drink, a snack or something. Theyll also, though, be buying a chance at more than a billion dollars. There has never been this much power in powerball. This is 1. 5 billion. The largest jackpot ever. This is historical. This is something you cant wrap your brain around. Reporter but lines do wrap around gas stations, shops, and markets across the country right now. Crazy. Everybody wanting that winning ticket. Some even crossing the border in the six states that dont play the game. We had a phone call that someone was going to be bringing up three charter buses full of people to buy lottery tickets from us. Reporter and plans about what to do with the winnings. Next vacation. Open up another business. Reporter are as plentiful as the number of people scrambling to get a ticket. Well, i have seven kids, so College Number one. Reporter fantasies fuelled by whatever it might take to win. I got my lucky tie on so hopefully once i get my numbers. I clicked my heels together three times. Ive been having dreams about stuff like this. Really. Ive been having dreams about winning this. Reporter dreams shared by millions, hoping they have the six numbers that will make them all come true. All right. So lets talk about the odds here for a minute. 1 in 292 million. It means youve got a better chance of being struck by lightning or even crushed by an asteroid. Ive never heard of that happening. You could become a movie star, you could become the president , youve got a better chance of being canonized by the pope. But, weve still got a chance, shannon. Some of those things, of course, more preferable than others. But we wish everybody good luck in the powerball. Jay gray, thank you very much. The crash went for three miles. Six people were hospitalized with nonlifethreatening injuries. This is steam, looks like steam, from lake superior. Temperatures were below zero degrees and the lake wasnt frozen. We call this steam fog. That will happen again today. Until that lake freezes youll get scenes like that. This morning we had the snow yesterday. Now were dealing with the cold, and with it we have some heavy lakeeffect snow just north of cleveland. A couple bands from erie and buffalo that will intensify later today with the really strong band focused right towards syracuse, new york. The reason this is a big deal is syracuse has had hardly any snow. Known as the snowest spot in the u. S. As far as any cities go. Only eight inches so far this year. 46 inches behind their normal pace. Well they did pick up four inches. Theyre going to get another six to twelve and for all the teachers and students, i just saw that syracuse schools are closed. Their first snow day of the year. Thats ridiculously late for them. So snow amounts, erie to buffalo pick up some heavy snow. Watertown to syracuse. And our friends in maine are still getting some snow from that clipper low that redeveloped in the gulf of maine. Reaction has been fast and furious to the president s state of the union address. A special edition of scrambled politics is next. When a wildfire raged through elkhorn ranch, the sudden loss of pasture became a serious problem for a family business. Faced with horses that needed feeding and a texas drought that sent hay prices soaring, the owners had to act fast. Thankfully, mary miller banks with chase for business. They represent blood cells. And if you have afiban irregular heartbeat that may put you at five times greater risk of stroke they can pool together in the heart, forming a clot that can break free and travel upstream to the brain, where it can block blood flow and cause a stroke. But if you have afib thats not caused by a heart valve problem, pradaxa can help stop clots from forming. Pradaxa was even proven superior to warfarin at reducing the risk of stroke, in a Clinical Trial without the need for regular blood tests. And, in the rare event of an emergency, pradaxa is the only oral blood thinner other than warfarin with a specific reversal treatment to help your body clot normally again. Pradaxa is not for people who have had a heart valve replacement. Dont stop taking pradaxa without talking to your doctor. Stopping increases your risk of stroke or blood clots ask your doctor if you need to stop pradaxa before any planned medical or dental procedure. Pradaxa can cause serious, and sometimes, fatal bleeding. Dont take pradaxa if you have abnormal bleeding. And seek immediate medical care for unexpected signs of bleeding, like unusual bruising. Pradaxa may increase your bleeding risk if youre 75 or older, have kidney problems, stomach ulcers, a bleeding condition, or take certain medicines. Side effects with pradaxa can include indigestion, stomach pain, upset or burning. Dont just go with the flow. Go with pradaxa, the only blood thinner that lowers your risk of stroke better than warfarin and has a specific reversal treatment. Talk to your doctor about pradaxa today. It takes a lot of work. Big surprise here, gop candidates werent big fans. In classic trump form the donald tweeted the state of the union speech was one of the most boring, rambling, and nonsubstantive i have heard in a long time. New leadership fast. The other Top Republicans spoke up, too. It was more of the same. It was sadly, i think it was less a state of the union than it was a state of denial. This president has been the single most Divisive Political figure this country has had over the last decade. This is a president that has deliberately pitted americans against each other time and again. If he had given that speech his second year in office, his third year in office, his fourth year in office, on some of those things he said tonight it would have been a lot more useful. He has a tendency to describe things as he wishes they were, as opposed to how they actually are. And well hear from senator rand paul, governor chris christie, and jeb bush coming up on morning joe. So you can decide for yourself the winner of the contest, who hated it the most. Then theres the other side who would wouldnt you know completely opposite reaction from Hillary Clinton seven years of progress, we need to build on it, not go backwards. Thank you, president obama. And senator Bernie Sanders had compliments for some of the points made in the address. Speaking to Nbcs Lester Holt he even made an admission. As you were watching the speech tonight, the president coming in, did you stop and think, could i imagine myself being that person, walking in, making that speech, being the president of the United States . Well, actually, to be honest with you, that thought did go through my head. Yes, it did. And on social media, well the most retweeted message of the night came from the president. The other two in the top three were more of what weve come to expect from the internet. In second place, gq magazine caught paul ryan, quote, trying really hard not to laugh at one of president obamas jokes. And for third place, it came right after this burn from the president. If you doubt americas commitment, or mine, to see that justice is done, just ask osama bin laden. And there it is. A definitely edited skit featuring a stunned Vice President joe biden. And that is your morning dish of scrambled politics. All right lets bring in political reporter and coauthor of hrc Jonathan Allen. Good morning you to, jonathan. Good morning, shannon. All right. So the president s final state of the union a little different from his previous talks. What were your takeaways. Well, first of all, this was much more focused. It seemed very very much to be a contrast between the president s own record, and where he sees republicans potentially taking the country. I thought it moved pretty quickly. He basically talked about how he wished that he could have had a little bit more bipartisanship, had been a little less polarized and then he went ahead and created more polarization in setting up 2016. You mention it, part of his address is sort of a plea to fix politics and the divisiveness, there were some thinly veiled comments directed towards donald trump. What do you make of a sitting president essentially warning the public of a president ial candidate . This was a little bit i think drawn back in some ways from the White House Correspondents Association dinner a few years ago where he actually called out donald trump by name while donald trump was sitting in the room, and ripped him for some of the things he had said. But, look, i think he obviously believes that donald trump would take the country in the wrong direction. I think he believes that donald trump represents the wrong values for the country. And i think his hope is that its not just democrats that view things that way, but also many of the republicans sitting in that room. Obviously the republicans arent really in a good position to applaud him when hes going after one of their candidates. But i think in some ways that may have brought together the democratic party, and at least the establishment wing of the republican party. Well in some ways i think what happened after that did a bit. South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley gave the republican response, as you know. She also seemed to make some not so veiled thinly trumped swipes. What did you make of her speech . I thought it was one of the best, actually probably the best rebuttal ive seen to a state of the union. Its very difficult, after the president speaks to congress, after he speaks to the public in that big setting, to just stare at the camera oneonone basically with the camera and deliver a rebuttal. I think its hard for anybody. What nikki haley did in terms of weaving a story about who she is, and about what South Carolina did in terms of coming together after the charleston shootings, i thought was very pow earlful and very effectively and of course her scolding donald trump about his positions on immigration i think was also an interesting moment. It joined her with the president in a way in talking about american values, and surely some conservatives will be upset about it. But, i think nikki haley went a long way yesterday toward making herself a much more appealing Vice President ial candidate. Ah, so theres a Little Something in it for her, as well. Perhaps. There always is. All right, Jonathan Allen joining us from d. C. This morning. Jonathan, get some rest. We know youve been busy following this, and on all of our shows so we appreciate it. Take care. Well, so is all the rhetoric you hear about our enemies getting stronger, and america getting weaker. Let me tell you something, the United States of america is the most powerful nation on earth. Period. In his final state of the Union President obama gives a forceful defense of the nations standing in the world. And the republican response, unlike any weve ever seen. Nikki haley strikes a nerve, and why some are saying it was more of a rebuttal to donald trump than to president obama. It is 5 30 on the east coast, 2 30 out west, way too early. Good morning. Its wednesday, january 13th, im mick can brzezinski. We begin with breaking news this morning. Iranian state television is reporting that ten american sailors have been released from custody. The sailors were held overnight on irans farsi island in the persian gulf. A pentagon official told the associat
