Special counsel bob mueller, this despite the president s public criticism of the russia investigation. Good morning, everybody. It is wednesday, aug 9ust 9th. Im Yasmin Vossoughian. We begin with north korea. This morning there is new saber rattling on all sides and yesterday, speaking from his golf club in new jersey, President Donald Trump had this to say. North korea best not make any more threats to the United States. They will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen. He has been very threatening beyond a normal statement. And as i said, they will be met with fire, fury and frankly power the likes of which this world has never seen before. Thank you. All right. Those remarks came after a Washington Post report which nbc has confirmed saying a u. S. Intel asaysment believes north korea has the ability to miniaturize a Nuclear Weapon and attach it to a missile. However, according to u. S. Officials briefed on the intelligence, that does not mean that pyongyang has a nuclear tipped icbm nor that it could survive reentry if they did. This came after japan had air raid drills this week for the first time after world war ii, after the regime stated theyre considering striking guam, enveloping fire around the island of guam. Guam is home of Anderson Air Force base, the home of the b 1 bombers recently used in the show of force which followed north koreas recent icbms test. Reactions have been swift from across the political spectrum, instead of from one of his biggest polly critics, senator john mccain. Take a listen. I take exception to the president s comments because youve got to be sure that you can do what you say youre going to do. In other words the old walk softly but carry a big stiff. Teddy roosevelt saying, which is something that should have applied. Because all its going to do is bring us closer to some kind of serious confrontation. All i can say is that i dont believe that president reagan or president eisenhower or other president s that ive admired would have said the same thing. They might have done as much as we could but not that kind of rhetoric. Im not sure how it helps. Senator brian schatz of hawaii tweeted, we need nominations for ambassador for eastern asia, secretary of Asian Pacific security sent to senate now. Joining us live from vienna aus t austria. How is the International Community reacting to this. Theyre critical of the rhetoric that President Trump United Statesed in that statement yesterday. So how is the International Community reacting. Reporter well the International Communitys reaction is coming in as we speak. This announcement by President Trump was made last night. The first reaction was from north korea itself saying theyre going to attack guam. North korean state media threatens to attack the United States rather frequently. They do this regularly but they rarely make specific threats against specific parts of the United States. This is an unprecedented situation. Weve heard from the Prime Minister of australia, malcolm turn bull and the Prime Minister of new zealand. And the Prime Minister of australia with whom of course donald trump has a very tense relationship. He kind of rejected these comments by mr. Trump and he basically said he would rather see economic sanctions of the kind that were passed by the u. N. Council over the weekend rather than the comments mr. Trump delivered last night. Bill english, the Prime Minister of new zealand said, quote, trump eats commen trumps comments were not helpful. We can start to hear more International Reaction as the day goes on. The situation steady getting more tense as we speak. Matt bradley for us, thank you. And backlash continues after President Trump retweeted a fox news story about u. S. Spy satellites detecting north Korean Missile movements. The report cited Anonymous Sources discussing classified information. Nikki haley was asked about the story and seemed to suggest that information in the report was in fact leaked. What can you tell us about that . I cant. Why . I cant talk about anything thats classified. And if thats in the newspaper thats a shame. I have no reason to comment. Is that another leak, i guess . Its one of these things, i dont know whats going on but its incredibly dangerous when things get out into the press. Youre not only getting a scoop on something, youre playing with peoples lives. This has got to stop. The president s retweet came after Jeff Sessions announced a crackdown on leaks. The top domestic on the intelligence economy adam schiff said the president must stop writing declassification is one thing, incompetence is another. Were following breaking news out of france where six soldiers have been injured after being hit by a car this morning. Officials tell nbc news that the soldiers were leaving their bare ra barracks when the car ran into them. Its unclear if this was a hit and run or what the intention actually was. According to the reports, the mayor of the suburb saying it was a deliberate act targeting squu security forces. Despite criticizing the russia investigation, President Trump has told special counsel bob mueller in private that he appreciates mueller leading the probe. Thats what the president s lawyer said in an interview, revealing that the president sent the fbi director notes. Trumps chief counsel said on tuesday that he asked me to share that with him and thats what ive done. Dowd says hes passed along the president s messages expressing appreciations, quoting with the president has sent messages back and forth, dowd saying declining to elaborate further. Another attorney familiar with the matter tells nbc news that no substantive messages have been passed between the two. The president will not fire the special counsel saying thats never been on the table, never. Its a manifestation of the media. And National Security adviser h. R. Mcmaster continues to face attacks from the far right media outlets. All right sides have been pushing for the president to fire mcmaster. He was hired to replace Michael Flynn after he was brought on board steve bannon was forced off of the principles committee. The two men are said to be at odds and four sources say that the two men have clashed loudly and repeatedly over strategy in afghanistan. And yesterday, Michael Flynn jr. Began retweeting messages from the fringe right calling for mcmasters firing. President trump hitting a new low. The aug investors daily tipp poll puts his approval at 59 . The president s support among republicans is at a 71 , down 12 points since july. While with white men hes dropped to 44 and has 27 support among those who make 30,000 to 50,000 a year. Yet the president tweeted yesterday, quote, after 200 days rarely has any administration achieved what weve achooed. I dont even close. Dont believe the fake news. Suppression polls. And a report citing white house officials claims the president received a folder full of positive news about himself two times a day. The report claims that the folders are filled with screen shots of positive cable news matters, transcripts of tv interviews and praise filled news stories and pictures of trump op tv looking powerful. The folder is prepared in the National Committees war room around 6 a. M. And the followup comes around 4 30 in the afternoon. Reince prebuice and former press Secretary Sean Spicer wanted the privilege of delivering the 20 to 25page packet personally the source said said. Spicer called the story not accurate on nefrl levels. Last night on fox one of the president s advisers cheered his accomplishments thus far. President trump is the most gifted politician of our time and the best or ra tore to hold that position. He is the leader of this nationwide and worldwide populous movement and its about uplifting working class people. They dont want to hear that. There are certain republicans who dont want that message to resona resonate. The former owner of the ritzy 2 is club says he has no idea what the president was talking about when he compared the war in afghanistan to his restaurant. Last week during a meeting with the National Security team the president was up happy about the options presented on the war. Then he told a story about the restaurant losing a years worth of business after getting bad advi advice. But now club 21 east former ceo tells the press that the president exaggerated and mix up those details. There was no consultant and the renovation was faster than trump claimed. And democrats on the House Oversight committee are making a new push to see how much of the federal governments money is being spent at President Trumps businesses. The democrats led by Ranking Member Elijah Cummings announce nd yesterday theyre launching an investigation. Departme documents have been requested and asking how much they are spending on businesses associated with the president. Quote, the president s financial entanglements to make it impossible to know if hes making his decisions in the Public Interest or to benefit him or his family members financially. Theyre asking for responses by august 25th. President trump says the u. S. Will win the fight against americas Opioid Epidemic. And later, Mitch Mcconnell offers up some tough criticism of the president. Those stories and a check on your weather when we come back. Isaac hou has mastered gravity defying moves to amaze his audience. Great show. Here you go. Now hes added a new routine. Making depositing a check seem so effortless. Easy to use chase technology, for whatever youre trying to master. Isaac, are you ready . Yeah. Chase. So you can. music stops bell rings welcome back. As of right now the president appears to be rejecting the advice of his Opioid Commission which recommended last week that he declared the worsening opioid reaction. He was not in attendance when the President Trump briefed the committee where he too is on vacation. Last week the panel released its preliminary report calling the Emergency Declaration the first and most urgent recommendation and its quote completely within the president s control. It adds with 142 million americ 142 americans dying every week. The president believes that we will treat it as an emergency and it is an emergency, when you have the capacity of yankee stand yule or Dodger Stadium dying every single year in this nation, thats a crisis that has to be, has to be given incredible attention and the president is giving it that attention. So we believe that at this point that the resources that we need or the focus that we need to bring to bear to the Opioid Crisis at this point can be address without the declaration of an emergency but all things are on the table for the president. The best way to prevent drug addiction and overdose is to prevent people from abusing drugs in the first place. So we can keep them on going on and maybe talking to youth and telling them no good, really bad for you in every way. But if they dont start, it will never be a problem. The Justice Department has vowed to crack down on opioid fraud and abuse. And yesterday the president says the administration plans to increase federal drug prosecutions rapidly. The Trump Administration has increased the number of deportation orders since taking office but the number of actual deportation levels is behind president obama. They ordered 57,000 people to leave the u. S. From february to june of this year. But more than 16,000 of them won their cases allowing them to stay. The data shows that 17,000 deportations a month under the Trump Administration so far, compared to 20,000 a month under president obama. The Current Administration is making more arrests but deporting at a slower pace. There is a current backlog of more than 600,000 cases which the Justice Department says it is working through. All right. Lets get a check on your weather now with nbc meteorologist kill carnes. Some Severe Weather and flash flood warnings from east texas to mississippi this morning. Breaking news out of france where police in paris, they say six soldiers have been injured after being hit by a car this morning. Officials tell nbc news the soldiers were leaving their barracks when the car ran into them. Theyre now searching for the suspect and the vehicle adding that it is unclear if this was a hit and run or what exactly the intention was. The manhunt for the suspect in the deadly shooting of a Missouri Police officer is over. Officials announced last night that he was arrested yesterday evening after officers responded to a call about a person walking in the middle of a rural road. Mccarthy is accused of shooting and killing officer gary michael during a routine traffic stop late sunday night. A military judge has agreed to suppress statements by an army captain accused of abandoning his post. Sergeant bo bergdahl appeared in court yesterday. He is charged with desertion and misbelie misbehavior and faces the potential of life in prison. Pyongyang says that it is seriously reviewing a plan to strike the u. S. Territory of guam with missiles. The latest provocation comes just hours after President Trump issued a dramatic warning to the regime following a report that north korea may now have the ability to miniaturize a Nuclear Weapon and attach it to a missile. Nbc News National correspondent Peter Alexander has more from bedminster, new jersey. Locked in a standoff in a rogue regime, President Trump is facing the first foreign polly showdown of his administration. I think the United States has to be very careful in describing its own objectives. The United States has many military options on the Korean Peninsula but none of them are risk free. Among the options, stay the course. Emphasizing diplomacy following strict new u. N. Sanctions with the support of russia and china. A strategy that likely accepts the reality that north korea will secure the capability to hit a u. S. City with a Nuclear Weapon. Another option, military action with limited strikes aimed at north Korean Military targets with american missiles firing from bombers, submarines or ground launched. Mcmaster is now ruling out the me venn tiff war. Its intolerable from the president s perspective. In south korea, it could be catastroph catastrophic, 25 million civilians in seoul alone. I would lead to war in the Korean Peninsula and hundreds of thousands of deaths in south korea including many americans. For President Trump, a defining decision looms. Well the white house is doing a lot of talking about the military options. So its clearly their intention to convey to north korea that theyre not afraid to use it. But the reality is, no one has ever used it before because its such a grim reality. Reporter this morning for the unconventional president , a decision that is one former National Security official described to me requires a steady hand and a clear strategy, a crisis with itchations that could affect millions overseas and here at home. Thanks to Peter Alexander for that report. Joining us life, matt bradley for us. Good to talk to you once again. As the situation appears to be edging away from nondiplomatic actions, how is the region reacting militarily . How are they preparing . Reporter we havent heard about military preparation. We know in guam, part of the u. S. Territory, there have been some preparations made and really mostly assurances to the public in guam from pool tiglit that theyre prepared for any attack from north korea. North koreans do threaten to attack the United States but calling out an individual place like guam is seen as very rare and very threatening, especially for the people who live there. We havent heard much in terms of International Reaction so far as its still somewhat early in the day. And we can imagine quite a few foreign leaders are going to take a wait and see approach to see exactly where to go next because these events are moving so quickly. Weve already heard in malcolm turn bull, the Prime Minister of australia. He seemed to quietly reject trumps statements ensaid that he wanted to lean more on the economic sanctions thar with enacted by the u. N. Security council and that had the support of china and russia over the weekend. A lot of World Leaders are going to want to see how those sanctions, the diplomatic and the economic end of this dispute play out before they start moving towards Donald Trumps more angry rhetoric that has matched north koreas up until now. Thanks so much for joining us. Meanwhile, msnbc retired general pulled no punches yesterday when asked for his reaction to President Trumps threats. Take a listen to this. Could this be a deliberate plan to talk about fire, fury and power, the likes of which the world has never seen to out crazy a crazy leader in north korea . Not a chance. This is just impulsivmpulsive, thought out action that is unlikely to do anything but move us more toward a confrontation. This was not written by the National Security council, hr mcmaster. This is off of his head in his hotel. There will distinctions. Back in 93 president bill clinton said the u. S. Would quickly and overwhelmingly retaliate if north korea developed and used an atomic weapon. In his words it would mean the end of their country as they know it. But president clinton was warning north korea about using a Nuclear Weapon while President Trump was warning about threats. And it was also noted how President Trumps language echoed another american president , harry truman when he announced the use of an atomic weapon against japan. They may accept a rain from the air the like of which has not been met on the heather. They will be met with fire, fury and frankly power, the likes of which this world has never seen before. Wow. Whether or not he was channelling a pred says are, President Trump has used part of that particular phrase many times before, including earlier that same day when talking about the Opioid Epidemic and border security. It is a problem the likes of which we have not seen. I would say the likes of which this country has not seen that kind of streak. With a week to go to fill jeff session seat in the senate, President Trump let his choice be known in the state where he won by 30 points. Hes backing Luther Strange. Last night the president tweeted senator Luther Strange has done a great job representing the people of the great state of alabama. He is my complete and total endorsement. The president s endorsement was highly coveted as one gop consultant told the wall street journal. This week you would think that the u. S. Senate republican primary were an episode of the bachelor where you get to marry donald trump. The two candidates with the most votes with head to a runoff. Hes facing moe brooks and roy moore who came out with this new add. They lied about repealing obamacare. Now Mitch Mcconnells dc slime machine spreading lies about moore. Why we all know why. Roy moore is honest. Drain the swamp. Send mcconnell a message. Send them all a message. Senate majority leader Mitch Mcconnell is touring and expressing his hesitation with trump. The President Trump tweeted, budget reconciliation is killing our in the senate. Mitch and go to 51 votes now and win. It is time. This reportedly did not sit well with the majority leader who on monday seemed to respond while speaking to a local rotary club. Now our new president has of course not been in this line of work before and i think excessive expectations about how quickly things happen in the democratic process. And so part of the reason i think people feel like were underperforming is because too many artificial deadlines unrelated to the reality of the complexity of the ledge later may not have been fully understood. Also on monday the president s son eric trump appeared on fox news and chided Senate Republicans for failing his father. I think repeal and replace has to get done. I do. That is still pushing the republicans in the senate. Either youre quitter or go back and get the job done. They let him done. He had it done, finished. It was on the 1 yard line and unfortunately they let him down. But it is not all doom and gloom. Over the weekend senator mcconnell told a Republican Group how he continue to cheer himself up. Even on the night that we came up one vote short of our dream to repeal and replace obamacare, heres the first thing i thought about. Feel better. Hillary clinton could be president. All right. There you go. While greenland is largely covered by ice, certain vegetation can be found coastal areas. With that lets get a check on your weather. Flash flooding is the concern today. But in the summertime its unseasonally cool for much of the country. Kansas city 80 degrees. Only 87 in memphis. I say only because typically this time in memphis it should be 90 to 95. Thursday, temperatures in the mid 80s which is very enjoyable for the middle of august. And into this weekend even, chicago upper 70s, thats pretty nice. Hit and miss showers or storms. Atlanta will be in the upper 80s and new york city, upper 70s, low 80s. No signs of any heat waves. And im sure youve noticed, that sun is starting to set a little earlier each and every night. How is is the rest ft world reacting now to the news of north korea . Well, let me just take a look at the numbers were seeing at the moments. With the market in south korea, the kospi is down 1 during the course of the trading. Weve seen a similar story in japan with the nikkei and the two major markets in china, the shanghai composite. The same with frankfurt and london. And the korean one is low, as well as fargo the other story you are mentioned there, no troubles for the banking giant. Last career they got into all sorts of trouble for opening millions of accounts to generate fees. Now theyve admitted there are issues around auto loan insurance. Well be watching those developments as well. And one other thing with wells fa fargo, they are having troubles with fees. The company says theyve been fair. And news out of china involving mcdonalds. Tell us about that. Right now there are 2,500 mcdonalds across china and the Company Wants to get up to 4,500, calling for doubledigit sales growth over that period.
