Im yasmin vossoughian. Were going to begin with new claims members of the special counsel team feel the public has been misinform by attorney general bill barrs letter about their report. The New York Times reporting that some mueller investigators have told associates that barr failed to adequately portray their findings which government officials and others familiar with their frustrations say were more damaging for President Trump than indicated. Barr says he needs time to make redaktions the times reports special investigators had already written multiple summaries of the report and some team members believe that barr should have included more of their material in his four page letter. The government Officials Say Justice Department determined that the summaries contained Sensitive Information like classified material, secret grand jury ft. Myers and former to current investigations that must remain confidential. While the report said it was not clear what findings the special counsels investigators viewed as troubling for the president , barrs letter says that on the obstruction of justice matter quote the report sets out evidence on both sides of the question. And President Trumps legal team responded late last night to all of this. Rudy giuliani saying quote if there was a significant difference mueller would have corrected it as he did the false buzzfeed report. This is from disgruntled mueller staffers who are rabid democrat supporters. Yet another example of unethical behavior by muellers staff. He goes on it demonstrates mueller had people who leaked as much as comey. How many leaks proved to be false . Most. Cant obscure the conclusion of no case for collusion or obstruction. The Justice Department declined to respond to the New York Times story but the paper reports that attorney general barr team has its own frustrations with mueller. According to two government officials barr and other Justice Department officials believe the special counsels investigators fell short of their task by declining toe decide whether President Trump illegally obstructed inquiry leaving barr to make a decision. But as nbc news reported, mueller gave barr and the doj three weeks notice that he would not make a conclusion on obstruction. Officials familiar with the attorney generals thinking tells the time that barr and his aides limited the details they revealed because they were worried about wading into political territory. Michael smith one of the took times story is coming up on morning joe so dont miss that. House democrats filed a formal request with the Treasury Department asking for six years of mr. Trumps business and tax returns. Ways and Means Committee chair made the request seeking details about trumps personal returns from 2013 through 2018, including whether they are now or have ever been under audit as the president continuously says. The chairman writes in part we have completed the necessary ground work for a request of this magnitude and i am certain we are within our legitimate rights. President trump told reporters last night that he would quote not be inclined to do so. Chairman of the ways and Means Committee asked for six years of tax returns. Is that all . Thats all. Usually its ten. I guess they are giving up. Were under audit despite what people said. And were working that out as im always under awe it seems. But ive been under audit for many years because the numbers are big and i guess when you have a name you are audited. But until such time as im not under audit i would not be inclined to do that. Obviously this has been a common theme throughout the President Trump presidency in the lead up to 2016, which was when we were going to see then candidate trump and now President Trumps tax returns. Could we feasibly see them now, these six years of tax returns requested by the democrats . What do you make of them . Can we see them . Is he under audit although we dont have confirmation on that. Does that restrict him from releasing these tax returns . Federal law allows congress to request and obtain these tax returns, and that law has been around is in 1924. Before 1924 there was one person in the government who could authorize the release of tax returns. Guess who that was . It was the president. So congress changed that situation in 1924 following a huge scandal called the tea pot dome scandal that some folks may have read about. What it does is it allows any one of three committees to request and obtain the tax returns of any person, including the president. So do you think well see them . I think eventually we are because that same law allows the committees to obtain them and then to give them to congress. Candidly once information makes it out to congress as a whole, one way or another, were going to see them eventually. Lets talk about this news now regarding the Mueller Report and how theres some links coming from the mueller team broken by the New York Times that they are frustrated with this four page summary of this 300 page plus Mueller Report that didnt include enough information about the entire report and that, in fact, muellers team actually had certain summaries. This had a different selection of summaries that they gave to the Justice Department and. Yet none of that was used. What do you make of all this . First, as to a four page summary that barr gave on a 300 or 400 page report its not that uncommon that somebody will be disappointed with a four page summary of an opus with that many pages and graphs and different charts. But muellers team made a summary. Why not include most of that summary . Thats the interesting point. The law requires that information go to barr and from there barr must provide a notification. Could be barr simply saw his duty opportune law to take that information, put it into his own words, interpret the law requiring notification to congress the way he saw fit and prepare a personal notification of his own without releasing that summary that mueller may have provided him or summaries. Quickly what do you make of the fact that bill barr seems frustrated with mueller that he didnt provide any conclusions with regards to obstruction of justice despite the fact that they had three weeks of notice that he would you please have any conclusions on obstruction of justice. My theory is mueller started from the outset you couldnt indict a president and that a president cant obstruct justice. He prepared his report with facts on one side, facts on the other side and always going to submit it to barr from the out set. Then it would have been rod rosenstein. And leave that to the ag or deputy ag to make the final determination. Why we need to see this report in full. With redactions. Well talk to you again in a little bit. And i think that as you mentioned, you know, that someone like former Vice President joe biden wanting to select someone like her as a running mate does show, you know, just how influential she is right now and i think she recognizes her power and so i wouldnt be surprised, you know, if she kind of teases this for a little bit longer. Still unclear what her intentions are. When it comes to stacy barack obamas, Kamala Harris, or Elizabeth Warren, being a woman, whether youre a minority whether or not you embody those things or the fact that you include it in your platform. I think no matter what these type of issues, being a minority in this country, being an immigration in this country, immigration in general all of those things need to be a part of your platform right out of the gate. Exactly. Past elections sometimes women tried hide some of they things or tried to make themselves Hillary Clinton struggled this a lot in 2016. But now its more seen as an asset than a liability to be a woman, to be leading the charge, to have, you know, this diversity. I think she recognizes this and really using it to her advantage. The House Intelligence Committee wants to speak with one of the top organizers of President Trumps inauguration. The committee is seeking an interview with and want documents from stephanie wolkoff. Wolkoff is an adviser to first lady melania trump. Now the request was disclosed by a lawyer for wolkoff in a letter to the inaugural committee. A person familiar with the matter tells the wall street journal they are seeking an array of materials. Now the committee reportedly requested information on efforts by foreign entities to provide gifts or things of value to donald trump, jared kushner, ivanka trump and their affiliated businesses. The Committee Also reportedly sought records related to the inaugural committees donors and contractors, guest lists for inaugural events and former on any payments made directly from donors to vendors. Well, i think that first off i just want to say following that video yesterday, were told that joe biden and his team and i had family are actually really in good spirits about how that went. Despite the video lacking an apology but promising change. But i think the big thing to note is the political ground has shifted under biden. You know whereas before his hands on, you know, way of approaching to connect with voters was seen in the era of me too that behavior is more questionable. I think as a 76yearold candidate in a field with a lot more younger fresher faces, this exacerbates some of the narrative that people are trying to pain that perhaps someone like biden is unfit to represent the Democratic Party. I remember with al franken, there were people that criticized the Democratic Party with how they dealt with al franken, but in defense of that, people like Kirsten Gillebrand said we cant necessarily have anybody vulnerable to attacks like this. We need to make sure we draw a very hardline when it comes to any complaints coming from women, whether its something that just makes someone uncomfortable to other more harsher accusations or more extreme accusations. Is this going to make it harder for democrats who want to make President Trumps history with women a Campaign Issue when you have someone like joe biden running for president . I think it does. It is a bit different. It is funny, you know, the president the other night at a dinner, joking welcome to the club joe. I think it is a difficult, you know, space to navigate. We havent seen any big name 2020 candidates yet say that joe biden shouldnt run. I think they are all really trying to figure out how to go about this and how to approach this, especially, in these changing times. It does make it a bit difficult and i think what people will do is show the comparisons between joe biden wasnt accused of Sexual Assault or Sexual Harassment bwhat the president has been accused of. It does make this whole discussion a lot trickier and all candidates are struggling with how, how to answer Something Like this. It seems like for the most part they are passing the buck back to joe biden in response whenever they are asked on the campaign trail or anybody in washington for that matter really wanting to pass the buck to joe biden in saying well wait and see what type of response he has on all of this because no one wants to resolutely get behind him and support him or denounce him for that matter. I wonder why. They are. They are putting the pressure on him to answer for himself. It is interesting, especially with a lot of these candidates. Kirsten gillebrand, shes someone who has been a big champion of the me too movement and trying to lift women up in these situations yet no one has flatly denounced him. Its interesting to see how the Democratic Party is trying to reckon with some of these where weve seen republicans have to deal with this in the past with President Trump. Thank you. Good talking to you. House democrats have officially sent a letter to the irs asking for President Trumps tax return. The house ways and Means Committee are seeking six years of trumps six years of person and business transactions. The president said hes not inclined to allow them access to those returns. Hallie jackson has the latest on this. Reporter good morning to you. This morning were waiting for more reaction from members of congress, the Treasury Department, the white house on that request now from the ways and Means Committee, from democrats on that Committee Asking to see six years worth of the president s tax returns. President trump said he would not be inclined to comply with that since hes under audit but nothing prevents him from releasing those returns anyway. President trump broke long standing precedent in the 2016 campaign when avenues candidate by not releasing his tax returns then. Bottom line this is the start of a long legal battle ahead. So after the Justice Department missed House Democrats tuesday deadline to hand over the Mueller Report the House Judiciary Committee voted to authorize chairman Jerrold Nadler to issue a subpoena. Nadler said he wants to give attorney general bill barr time to change his mind about redacting the report before submitting it to congress. Take a listen. Were going to work with the attorney general and for a short period of time in the hope. That, that he will reveal to us the entire Mueller Report but if that doesnt work out in very short order well issue subpoenas. Your willing to do that as soon as this week . Not surprised about the subpoena that nadler now has in his hands with regard to the Mueller Report but the fact that he said but he wants to give bill barr, the attorney general some time to quoteunquote change his mind on all of this and what hes going to be releasing to congress. Why do you think that is . Why do you think hes holding on to this . Congressional subpoenas are not like judicial subpoenas they are not normally as adversarial. They are more about compromise. Because Congress Knows that if this battle goes to the courts when they subpoena documents it can be a very prolonged process with appeals and just a lot of undefined areas like executive privilege that could really, really prolong the issue. Thats why congress, whenever it can seeks compromise, agreement, and. Giving folks the opportunity to voluntarily turn things over. And avoid getting into this long legal battle. Even though precedent is on congress side. Historically they do try to work things out. Even if they issue the subpoena doesnt necessarily mean the Mueller Report will get released to congress in full. It will take some time. Take some time and if attorney general barr wants to fight it, it can take longer as the case winds its way through the District Court and appellate court. Thats why for congress is to try to negotiate and give an opportunity for ag barr to turn over the report as much as hes willing. Lets talk about the president s taxes as we mentioned at the top of the hour when i was talking to you and the fact that the president obviously does not want to disclose his taxes. He says only because of the fact hes been audited for quite some time and there are some big numbers in there as the president said. There are some big numbers in there and thats why the audit is taking so long. Im sure. Can the president legally deny access to his taxes . Can he strike this down himself . No. Federal law allows three different committees of congress to obtain this tax return information. Not just for the president but for any human being who has filed a tax return. So if they want it, they can eventually get it. In the past thats been blocked by republican members of congress when they had a majority. Theres been a lot of talk of threats to close the border down. A lot of republicans were talking to are cautiously optimistic that wont happen. One, the administration is somewhat happy about the steps that mexico has been taking in light of the increased rhetoric to take steps on immigration and the socalled caravans moving up through the country. And President Trump is getting a sense that it will be bad for the market. Hes tweeting out and taking credit for when it hits new highs. But theres feedback that any move to close the border would be terribly damaging to the market. Any shutdown of the border would be devastating in the short term. A lot of republicans are telling Us Donald Trump is aware of that. Also, a lot of business groups and even republicans in texas have been speaking out very forcibly against this. Were starting to think this may not be something he will do soon. The caveat, something the president thinks at 10 p. M. One night can change by 10 a. M. In the morning. It depends who he talks to. We do know the president is going to the border on friday. I feel like this could change on a dime. It could be quite a moment if hes having a press conference and makes some sort of a sweeping claim like closure of the border. I think thats totally true.
