At this hour, the eye of Hurricane Matthew is growing dangerously closer to floridas east coast t. Monster storm may have waned to a category 3, but it is still the strongest storm to hit the eastern seaboard in over a decades. Officials fearing widespread damage of historic am proportions. Thousands have chose on the risk their lives by hunkering down at home. Just last night, florida sheriff William Schneider gave this grave warning. People seem to not getting and are not leaving. I have already checked. I dont say this to be theatrical. You know me. I dont lean to bravado. I asked my captain, do you have body bags . Are you prepared for mass casualty, because people do not leave, we get 140mileperhour whipped gusts in some of our mobile home facility, we are going to have fatalities. Its prompted the close of Nasas Kennedy Space Center and even the happiest place on earth, Walt Disney World closing its doors for the fourth time in history. Right now a state of emergency is in effect under president obama. 3500 national garld members are active throughout the state. But there is only so much that can be done at this time. Over 200 florida residents are without power. Its just the beginning. Some areas could get up to 15 inches of rain and deadly storm surges. All this after leaving a trail of death and destruction across the caribbean t. Death toll is now at 283 and thats still expected to climb. U. S. Officials now hoping against similar devastating loss. Gloets straight over to Bonnie Schneider. She has been tracking matthew throughout the night. Give us an update. How are the conditions of the storm playing out . Right now, we are watching the storm closely. Even as it doesnt make landfall as it rides the periphery of florida. Look at that were getting those strong rain bands into melbourne at this hour. Daytona beach youre next. Lets look at the coordinates and where its headed. Right now, we will zoom into matthew. A category 3 storm him dont take any of this less seriously. It is a category 3 with winds of 120 Miles Per Hour. Really for the weekend, not much of a change. It will be an intense storm. Eventually a category 1 by saturday. Whats interesting ability the track for this storm, it does an unusual loop back around. But this is a few days out. I want to focus on the short term as we watch the storm make its way to the northwest at 12 miles an hour. We watch for a storm surge going forward. Storm surge will be a big concern. The wind will pile up the water in so many locations. Not much of a concern west of ft. Lauderdale. Ft. Pierce, four to six feet when it comes to storm surge, this is the key. Melbourne to savannah, seven feet t. Higher number concerns me. Particularly here from savannah to brunswick all the way through jacksonville, you have a lot of smaller rivers and inlands, where the water can pile in. Unfortunately, that will be the threat. Up with of the biggest threats t. Klain coast, up the coast of carolina, fourtosix feet. Look at the rainfall total, we are looking at a lot of rain, right around the border of north and South Carolina. Even into savannah, 15 fchs through sunday. Reporter well, good morning from a breezy Daytona Beach, florida tonight. We have endured one band after another of increasingly nasty weather and the worst is yet to come. Now, we did get a little good news with the 11 00 eastern update last night, which is forecast to push the eye a little further east once it gets into the Daytona Beach area. That is good news. That usually will mean we wont see the strongest winds around the circulation of matthew. The winds still will be strong. We are anticipating upwards of 90, maybe 100 miles sustained for a couple hours at least t. Bad news is the eye is going to be a beam Daytona Beach right around the next high tide. That is expected to occur right around 12 45 p. M. This afternoon. That is when the biggest threat from any storm surge and flooding is to occur. Its always the storm surge in the water that typically is responsible for a lot of the deaths we see in these hurricanes. Not so much the winds. So that is the hour people will be most alert here in the Daytona Beach area t. Forecast at this hour is for upwards of 11 feet of a storm surge. That almost certainly will push water into some of the homes and businesses along atlantic avenue, which runs along north south here, a block off the beach. Inland on the inner coastal waterway, which runs the length of florida. A lot of real estate there. A lot of expensive real estate. So folks hunkered down there might anticipate getting water into their homes, if they have not sandbagged around their homes. We know a lot of lines for people getting sandbags. Also officials are telling folks, just because the eye passes doesnt mean the storm is over. This is a pretty large system. So we do anticipate that there will be Hurricane Force and certainly Tropical Storm force winds that will blow around this area for hours after the eye has passed, possibly into late into tonight and maybe even saturday morning. And one last thing and a lot of folks are not thinking about this and for good reason, because its a long way off t. First part of next week this storm could possibly reloop around the ocean right off of florida, reenergize and come back and hit some of these same communities that its hitting today, that would be cruel, just at a time when these folks are trying to clean up and especially get the power back on. Beheard bonnie say there was no storm surge. Not Like Northern florida. Lets talk to nbcs blake mccoy. What can you tell us about how people there are coping without power . Reporter ayman, there is a sense this morning that ft. Lauderdale really dodged a bullet with this storm. Conditions have improved dramatically over the past few hours. Overnight, we did see wind. We did see rain. Nowhere near as 3w5 as expected. Thats because this hurricane ended up staying 100 miles offshore as it patzed ft. Lauderdale, which was further out than expected. We saw the outer bands come through in waves in the i dont have night hours. All of that looks to move north at this point. 11,000 people are without power. You can see the lights on right now in ft. Lauderdale. What we expect to see later this morning is a return to normal now this system has moved further up the coast. We can tell you that ft. Lauderdales airport, which had been closed down on thursday, plans to reopen this morning. Miamis airport, we expect flights to resume this morning as well. So it is going to be a return to normal here as people turn their attention towards our neighbors to the north in florida. Nbcs blake mccoy, thanks for that. I want to show you the latest position. 80 miles southeast of cape canaveral, florida. So it is getting closer to the space coast. Matthew has winds right now, maximum sustained winds 120 Miles Per Hour. It was a category 4. Its still an intense storm. The movements to the northwest at 14 Miles Per Hour. As we zoom in, we are watching closely, going through the afternoon, it will be working up, heading towards coast am georgia and the carolinas and turning away from the mainland, which is good news. Well, thats a look at the big weather story of the day. Lets take a look at the weather where you are. Were looking at temperatures into the 70s across much of the northeast, looking beautiful. A good thing matthew didnt impact that part of the country. The gulf coast looks good, warm, climbing into the 90s in new orleans. We have already seen wind gusts here over 7 Miles Per Hour and over 1,500 customers without power. It will be a long night here and a long couple days up the coast. Well, as this storm makes its way up the eastern coast of florida, were seeing an increase of some out annuals. Currently, we have about 275,000 customers out of power. Mainly our largest customer bases in the south florida region, broward county, palm beach county, thats where the heart of a lot of outages are, mainly because the storm has just passed through there, continuing up the east coast. We have 4. 8 million customers state wide. Our territory covers 35 counties the majority of which are along the east coast. So as the storm makes its way up the east coast, were continuing to see more out annuals. However, the percentages are rather low compared to what we had thought about 20 hours ago. We were making early stills that as many as 2. 5 million customers could be impacted with out of power. So these lower numbers are a little positive news for us to see that its working. But either way, we have about 12,000 crews in the field that are ready to respond and as quickly as possible to get our customers power back on when the weather decides to do so. I know you are busy. These areas, we are a couple hundred miles away from the severe part of the storm, it is headed in this direction. We drive across on our way to town the st. John river, were seeing a sort of steady but light rainfall t. River we are driving over is expected to see surges of six, maybe nine feet. Which would not be a good thing for the city of jacksonville. Ki see from my van tage point the river looks quite high. Dont forget, there are 800,000 people in the city of jacksonville. Hopefully, they heeded the advice of the mayor. Winds are expected to whip up and be quite strong once the storm reaches here later on today, especially, hopefully, people have heeded these warnings out by the coast, where there are many people, particularly military members of the u. S. Military at naval station may port the Third Largest navy base in the country right here on the coast of the atlantic oegcean here in jacksonville. So pharrelltively quiet. Lets get right to meteorologist er erika martin. The good news is, theres a massive cold front that will prevent matthew from moving into our area. For our friends in the southeast, were very concerned. Locally were seeing mostly clear skies. But clouds will start to develop later today through the overnight hours as we start to get some moisture getting pushed up from the southwest towards the northeast. Current temperature, 56 degrees in philadelphia. We are seeing light winds but notice a little bit cooler for allentown, 49 degrees, mt. Pocono, 42 for you. A warmer lancaster at 53, philadelphia at 56 degrees. Here is Hurricane Matthew currently, a category 3, expected to make landfall somewhere around Daytona Beach. It will continue to work its way up the eastern seaboard across georgia, South Carolina, so those are the areas of major concern right now. Coming up in my full forecast, we will track it in detail, talk about it a little bit more. It is strengthening and i do want you to keep in mind, while were not getting too much rain from matthew, well start to see clouds develop later tonight into tomorrow and we do see some showers in the forecast.
