Cervical cancer. Why she kept it secret for months and why she credits her high profile stalking trial for beating the disease. Moment of impact. A passenger train slams into a fedex truck, slicing it in half. Miraculously, no major injuries. The surprising reason behind why it happened, today, wednesday, january 25th, 2017. Announcer from nbc news this is today with matt lauer and savannah guthrie, live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. Good morning, everyone. Welcome to today on a wednesday morning. Natalie is here again while savannah stays on maternity leave. We hope to have her back in the near future. Love that. The video was crazy. Unbelievable. Thank goodness that nobody got hurt in this. You see the truck completely severed in half. Crazy. Well have more on that coming up in a little while. Lets get to the top story on a wednesday morning. President trump set for what he is calling a big day on national security. Nbc news learned it will include that Campaign Promise to build a wall on the mexican border. Our Political Team has complete coverage. Nbc National CorrespondentPeter Alexander is at the white house. Hell start things off for us. Good morning. Matt, good morning to you. President trump is putting the power of his Office Behind another major project with todays target focusing on immigration and border security. New this morning, a senior official tells nbc news the president will sign an executive order to, quote, prioritize the removal of criminal aliens and construct a new barrier along the southern wall with mexico. Reporter this morning, President Trump is taking the first step to fulfill his signature Campaign Promise. I will build a great, great wall on the southern border. Reporter expected to sign an executive order directing the shifting of federal funds to start the construction of a border wall. A Senior Administration official telling nbc news, mexico will ultimately pay for that wall. Mr. Trump offering a preview, tweeting, big day planned on national security. Among many other things, we will build the wall. Also breaking overnight, reports of the president s broader proposed immigration plan that includes, according to the associated press, a fourmonth halt on all refugee admissions and a ban from people coming from a muslim majority countries, including iran, iraq, libya, somalia and yemen. Even as President Trump met with congressional leaders, there was bipartisan outrage over his false claim of widespread voter fraud. That is a voter, nonsensical statement. This has undermined his ability to govern the country. Reporter sean spicer backing up his boss. He believes what he believes based on the information he is provid provided. Hes believed this a long time. Reporter independent Fact Checkers and House Speaker paul ryan says there is nothing to substantiate that claim. Ive seen no evidence and ive made that clear. Reporter it would be a massive crime. Sean spicer said the white house had no plans for an investigation. The National Association of secretaries of state reaffirming its confidence in the systemic integrity of the election process. Saying it is not aware of any evidence supporting President Trumps voter fraud claims but is open to learning more about the administrations concerns. At stake, the administrations credibility, after a syreries o inaccurate claims. Inflating the inaugural crowd size, despite pictures to the contrary, and mr. Trump ignoring the criticism from the Intelligence Community compared to nazi germany. Claiming the media was to blame. Saying i had a freud. Reporter the latest orders resurrecting the keystone and dakota pipelines. Both of which president obama opposed. We will build our own pipeline. We will build our own pipes. Thats what it has to do with. Like we used to in the old days. Reporter President Trump also teeing up one of his most important decisions. Promising to announce his Supreme Court nominee next week. We have outstanding candidates and we will pick a truly great Supreme Court justice. Reporter insiders say the leading contenders are federal Appeals Court judges appointed by george w. Bush. All white men. But democrats are already gearing up for a fight. After president obamas nominee, garland, never even got a hearing. Republican leaders insist theyll do whatever it takes to win confirmation for whoever that Supreme Court nominee is. Late tuesday, seemingly out of nowhere, mr. Trump took to twitter, warning if chicago doesnt fix the carnage going on, in his words, referring to the citys homicide rate, quote, i will send in the feds. It turns out the police was likely watching fox news that ran a segment on that topic just minutes earlier. Matt . Peter alexander at the white house, thanks. The latest news of the border wall, how is it playing along the border . Gadi schwartz is along the arizona border. Good morning. Good mornmorning. This is the small piece of the fencing we have in the united states. The rest of the u. S. mexico border, about 2,000 miles, is relatively unprotected. It does not have a border fence. It has border patrol. President trump has said he does not want a border fence. He wants a border wall. He wants mexico to pay for it. Now, this part of the fence costs about 6. 8 million to make. Residents around here will tell you that they have seen people climb over this fence in less than 20 seconds. It was a constant refrain that we heard during his campaigns. People chanting, build a wall. Build a wall. But people that live along the border weve spoken to say they dont think a border wall will be particularly effective unless it is constantly patrolled. And this fence, you can see straight into mexico. You can see through it. Again, people can climb over this in about 20 seconds. But it remains to be seen how much an actual border wall will cost. Estimates are 8 billion to 10 billion right now. Donald trump saying he wants mexico to pay for it. Mexico saying they wont help with the costs. Back to you. Gadi schwartz, thank you. Ari melber is a Legal Correspondent and here with the fact check after the Trump Administration doubled down on the claim that 3 to 5 Million People illegally voted in the last election. Good morning to you. Morning, matt. Monday, President Trump telling congressional leaders he only lost the popular vote because of the allegedly illegal votes. Tuesday, sean spicer defending trumps assertion and saying a 2008 study by the nonpartisan Research Center supported the claim that a High Percentage of people that voted were noncitizens. Both the claims are false according to the findings of election authorities. There was no major voter fraud in this election. Thats typical, authorities say. It is rare for people to take the personal risk of breaking the law to vote when not authorized. Republican and democratic officials oversee voting in all 50 states. They responded to the latest claims, reiterating there is no evidence that supports the voter fraud claims made by President Trump. What about the one specific study mr. Spicer mentioned . It is not clear which he was referring to. What spicer said was, quote, a study in 2008. There was a pew study about the accuracy of government voting records, not voter fraud, from 2012. Finding 24 million records were inaccurate because voters died, moved or had been inactive. Now, those paper records are not evidence of fraud. When trump aides wrongly claimed in november, the author stressed his report had no findings about voter fraud. He spoke out tuesday, saying there is zero evidence of fraud in the latest election. In the past, team trump cited a 2008 survey that found 14 of noncitizens telling pollsters they voted in 2008 and 2010. That survey did not prove in person voter fraud either. In any event, it was from 2010, not about this 2016 election. Bottom line, trump and his aides have reason to know all of this evidence and reason to know they are currently mischaracterizing it. That makes the repetition of these falsehoods now stated with the authority of the u. S. Government all the more concerning. Again, the scope of the allegations would seem to warrant an investigation. The white house wont rule that out but says there isnt one right now. That was the most concerning part, really. Move aside from the fact check and say, here you have the government representative saying there were 3 to 5 million crimes occurred. At the same time, theyre not going to investigate or prosecute them. That is an inconsistency thats very hard to understand. Good to have you here. President trump is promising to nominate a new Supreme Court justice next week. Nbcs Steve Kornacki has a closer look at three names in the running. Before we get to the short list, lets talk about what is going to need to happen to push through his nominee and what fight can President Trump expect from democrats. Interesting. The fight over the fight. You have this rule in the senate, the filibuster. If the Opposition Party doesnt like the president s pick, they force you to get 60 votes. Theres been chipping away of that by the democrats over the years. If democrats try to mount a filibuster, maybe republicans will change the rules again, destroy the filibuster, just need 50 votes. Bottom line, if they want to do that, they can. Lets talk about the names well be hearing about. We have three here that nbc news focused in on. We think trump may be down to tea these. William pryor, a former politician. He was the attorney general of alabama. The pros and cons here. This is his biography. If you look at the pros and cons here, lets see if we can get that, here we go. Get the thing running. This is what the right has been waiting for. They left the seat vacant for the campaign. They wanted a conservative. Very outspoken on social issues. The con, on a scale of one to ten, this fight would be an 11. All sorts of ammunition for democrats to go after. Heres another contender. Neil gorsuch. A federal judge here. Little background here. What are the pros and cons trump might be looking at . Again, this is scalias seat. There is indications he shares the philosophy, not the temperame temperament. Democrats are fired up and dont think the seat should have been left vacant. May not give them reassurance. Third possibility here, thomas har hardiman. A federal judge. His background here, it is the life story, actually, biography here is interesting. Blue collar family, he drove a taxi in college, didnt go to the ivy league. A didnt route than we usually see. They might be interested in that story. Also, this idea of a stealth factor. Less of a paper trail here. Makes conservatives nervous. They want a slam dunk. They want one of their own on the court for a long time. Dark horse on him. Steve, thank you very much. President trump is tweeting about the voter fraud issue, saying, i will be asking for a Major Investigation into voter fraud, including those registered to vote in two states. Action from the president even as we were talking about it just a couple minutes ago. An interview of paul ryan is happening today. See it on for the record with greta on msnbc. Tuesday after school, my middle one got it a second time. Reporter classes cancelled. Outbreaks in rhode island causing several schools there to close to disinfect classrooms and cafeterias. Even though the virus is often called stock markmach flu, it i related but it is highly contagious. If youre near someone vomiting, that person creating aerosol. If you are close enough, you can breathe it in and then youll get sick 24 to 48 hours later. Reporter experts say the virus can live on surfaces, making it tougher to fight. The best defenses are basic. Frequent hand washing with soap and water. Sanitizers are not enough. Disinfect surfaces with a bleachbased cleaner and watch linens and towels. If youre sick, stay home. Even after the worst of your symptoms pass, you can make others sick. While norovirus can be deadly, the main risk is dehydration. The increase in norovirus cases is typical for winter. On average, there are 19 to 21 million cases each year. Theres not enough data yet to know whether this season is especially bad. If you or someone in your family caught it, you know how unpleasant it can be. Back to you. I had it, tom. It is the worst thing youve ever had. So contagious. Just stay where you are, okay . Youre pretty safe right there, tom. It was a long time ago. It is the worst. Lets go back to the dramatic video we showed at the top of the show. Dash cam video shows the moment a train smashed into a fedex truck, wiping out the tractor trailer. Just missing the trucks cab. Fortunately, there was no serious injuries. The crossing arms were not down at the time. The lights were not flashing. There are indications that snow and ice may have caused the system to fail. The accident under investigation. Notice the arms come down immediately after that truck gets hit. Crazy. Al is here with the first check of the weather. Mr. Roker, good morning. Morning, everybody. Were talking more snow.
