WCAU Today July 10, 2017

Bulls eye. A bad weekend for americans in pamplona, spain. At least seven gored during the annual running of the bulls. All that, plus, wildfires ravage the west. What theyre calling the summer of hell begins for commuters at the worlds busiest train station. And the stuff of champing nightmares. I woke up to a crunching sound and a lot of pain. A teenage bear attack survivor speaking out today, july 10th, 2017. From nbc news, this is today, with matt lauer and savannah guthrie, live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. And good morning, everybody. Welcome to today on a monday morning. So glad to have you along with us. And you, too, craig. Happy fifth anniversary. July 10th. Smackdab in the middle of the summer. Well start with the new controversies tied to russia facing donald trump and his oldest son. We start with National Correspondent Peter Alexander at the white house this morning. Good morning. Reporter good morning. With President Trump facing fierce new criticism in the wake of his meeting with vladimir putin, there are indications that some within his campaign, including his oldest scan, donald trump jr. , were willing to accept potentially damaging information about Hillary Clinton from a russian lawyer tied to the kremlin. This morning, revealing new details about why the president s son, soninlaw and his thencampaign chairman met privately at june 16 with a russian lawyer. Donald trump jr. Now acknowledges he was promised information about Hillary Clinton that might be helpful to his fathers campaign, before agreeing to the meeting just after trump clinched the information. Mr. Trumps son says, an acquaintance suggested the meeting. Where he was told, quote, that individuals connected to russia were funding the Democratic National committee and supporting ms. Clinton. But trump further states that the russian lawyers comments were vague, ambiguous and made no sense. And she had no meaningful information. She did talk about russian adoptions. The president s son and his outside Legal Counsel said donald trump had no naj of the meeting. Back at the white house, at the g20 summit, where his daughter sat in for him at the main table, stirring up controversy. I strongly pressed president putin twice about the russian meddling in the election. His chief of staff trying to sharpen the point. The president absolutely did not believe the denial of president putin. Reporter President Trump adding he wants to move beyond the election interference controversy, highlighting a bold proposed Partnership Already drawing fire. Putin and ities cussed forming a Cyber Security unit so that Election Hacking and many things will be guarded. Several Top Republicans expressing disbelief. Its not the dumbest idea but its pretty close. Vladimir putin could be enormous assistance in that effort since hes doing the hacking. Reporter rubio hacking it, partnering with putin on a suber Security Unit is akin to partnering with assad on a chemical weapons unit. This is about having capabilities to make sure we both fight cyber together, which i think is a significant accomplishment for President Trump. Reporter but 13 hours after the president boasted about it, he quickly dismissed the whole thing. The fact that putin and i discussed a Cyber Security unit doesnt mean i think it can ha. The president added, it cant. But a ceasefire can and did. He was referring to syria. Back to donald trump jr. One Important Note is how this story has changed over time. His story has changed over time. When originally approached in march, he denied any meeting occurred. On saturday, he acknowledged it was one, about russian adopti adoptions. 24 hours later, he claims he was promised dirt on Hillary Clinton. Thank you, Peter Alexander. Jeremy bash, nbc security analyst. Lets pick up where peter just left off. Donald trump jr. And the peting with a lawyer that some say has links to the kremlin. How devastating would that be . Its devastating they never met with any russian and had no intent to collude with russian operatives. And campaigns often times look for opposition research. But here, were talking about a foreign adversary government working with a u. S. President ia. The idea that you would have Paul Manafort and donald trump jr. With an attorney in a room, does that smell right to you . It doesnt. And the meeting was billed by donald jr. To his colleagues on the campaign, to the campaign ja chairman, as a way to affect the outcome of the election. This is what everything people have been looking for. This is not only devastating to the narrative. I think its potentially incriminating. Now, we have conflicting stories about how hard the president pressed putin about the election meddling. And the russians say one thing. And now, secretary of state Rex Tillerson said he didnt think that the president pushed him that hard. The secretary of states narrative was that the president checked the box. He walked into the room and said, i have to raise this issue, so, i will. The president is saying i pressed him hard. But the russians say the president accept eed putins denial and wants to move on. It seems like the president missed an opportunity to really push the russian leader on this. Theres conflicting versions about what came out of the putin trump meeting. How would you characterize that muchanticipated facetoface . I think it was a missed opportunity for the president. He could have pressed him on a number of issues. On cryou ukraine and syria. What about the motion that the u. S. And russia will team up to go after hacking . Thats laughable. The russians are the culprit here. Thanks goodness this appears to be the shortestlived president ial initiative history. Its back to business after the holiday break. And the Health Care Battle will be front and center once again. Kristen welker has more on that. Good morning. Reporter hi, craig. Good morning to you. Republicans are returning from their july fourth recess to a harsh reality. Opposition has grown to the Health Care Bill. Now, a frenzy to try the fix it to get it over the finish line. And the president weighing in this morning in a tweet, writing, i cannot imagine that congress would dare to leave washington without a beautiful, new Health Care Bill fully approved and ready to go. The stakes couldnt be higher this morning, as Congress Returns with one goal, repeal and replace obamacare. This, after republicans faced growing outrage from constituents. Health care for all. Reporter with protests and tense town halls during the recess. The senates current plan scales back many of obamacares tax credits and ends its medicate expansion. As many as 22 people could lose coverage. A growing number of republicans have opposed the bill, with some openly saying its going nowhere. In my view, its probably going to be dead. Reporter majority leader, mitch mcconnell, push backed a vote, with changes to the bill. With a reality check to his party, pass the bill or work with democrats. If my said is unable to agree on an adequate replacement, some kind of action, with regard to the private Health Insurance market must occur. Reporter but hes facing pressure from the right and President Trump, who tweeted, for years, even as a civilian, i listened as republicans pushed the repeal and replace of obama care. Now, they have a chance. They will get a repeal and replace bill done. Reporter the president also floating the idea that if the senate cant pass the current bill, they should immediately repeal and then replace at a later date. But thats the exact opposite of what mr. Trump said a few months ago. And some Congressional Republicans tell nbc news, that idea is a nonstarter. Now, the gop is struggling to come up with alternatives. Senator ted cruz is proposing an ameantment that could bif Insurance Companies more flexibility. But that is being criticized by those who say it could limit coverage. And Chuck Grassley of iowa writing 52 republican senators should be ashamed that we have not passed Health Reform by now. We wont be ashamed. Well go from majority to minority. Kristen, thank you. A lot more going on, including wildfires in california that have forced nearly 8,000 people out of their homes. The governor, jerry brown, has declared an emergency for brute county. Reporter it took nearly 12 hours for someone to call 911. That is what made the difference . Yeah. They killed him.
