Congressional republicans in turmoil this morning after the man expected to be the next House Speaker, congressman Kevin Mccarthy dropped out of the running, shocking everyone. Could one congressman speaker be angling for the job now. Peter, good morning. We want to talk about chaos at the capitol. Right now, it is still unclear which republican will emerge as a unifying figure for the party. This morning, several highprofile republican members are strongly urging the former paul ryan to reconsider by throwing his hat in the ring. Its the question now consuming the capitol. Who will inherit John Boehners gavel as House Speaker. With Kevin Mccarthys stunning decision to pull out of the race, all eyes are focused on paul ryan. Interested. But late thursday, wouldnt rule out a run. This is not the time or place, guys. Reporter still, ryan may be the only candidate who could reunite House Republicans. Maybe we could dissuade paul. Reporter the speaker doesnt have to be a member of congress, which explains why Newt Gingrich who resigned after a decade ago said he would consider a return. There are moments you cant avoid. Reporter this week, a conservative republican warned has committed misdeeds should withdraw from the race. But mccarthy dismissed that as his reason for exiting. Boehner said he will stay on as a replacement for the coming weeks facing a staggering to do list. Just weeks left to pass a spending bill to keep the government open raised the countrys debt limit or face default and pass a critical bill to repair americas roads. Democrats warned the disarray comes with consequences. Were concerned the board of directors of the greatest country on the face of the earth is dysfunctional and unable to even select a leader. Reporter on the campaign trail, donald trump gave himself a pat on the back for mccarthys move. Theyre giving me a lot of credit for that, because i said you really need somebody very, very tough and very smart. Savannah, willie, back to you. Peter alexander, thank you. Chuck todd is moderator of good morning. About this time looked like the guy who is the next speaker of the house, stunned a lot of republicans in that room. How shocked were you to hear this news . Well, look, i wasnt shocked struggle. I thought that his future was going to be at the benghazi committee, meaning if Hillary Clinton got the best of the benghazi committee, then i thought his speakership candidacy was in trouble. I guess im shocked he didnt try to see if he could get the the month. So on that front, what happened yesterday clearly shocking. So what happens next . You have a vacant job over there in the house of representatives. The speakership, its a powerful job. And yet you dont have people falling all over themselves to fill it. Nobody wants it for the very reasons why john boehner is leaving the job. The place is impossible to run right now. Its going to be impossible to the same forces that are dividing the republican party, trump, carson, fiorina, from bush. These are the forces in the house that are basically saying we dont want the same people running the house. So i think that thats i think mccarthy was going to be boehner 2. 0. A lot of conservatives saw that and thats why they were trying to torpedo this thing. The name on everyones lips is paul ryan, the running mate to mitt romney, highly respected among conservatives on the hill, the guy who also said i dont want this job. What are the odds he ends up being the speaker . I think theyre getting higher and higher. Paul ryan is a man who can be convinced of things, saying youve got to do it for the party. And i think the best scenario that those that want ryan to do this is basically saying, hey, you only have to do the job to the end of 16. Just be the temp at this point. Do whatever it takes to be to fix this thing for now. I think the scenario is, ryan will do this, but only temporarily. You may have to answer that call. Chuck todd, thank you, sir.
