President obama begins his week in paris attending a Landmark Conference on Climate Change. That city, of course, still on edge following those deadly terror attacks. Nbcs Kelly Odonnell is traveling with the president. Kelly, good morning to you. Reporter good morning, matt. Security here is already very tight with emergency measures in place. Just two weeks after the isis attacks here in paris. That is not what brought president obama to france, but it was the first thing on his mind. Arriving very early this morning, just after midnight, president obama took advantage of the relative quiet and the empty streets of that early hour to make an unannounced stop at the scene of the deadliest violence, the bataclan theater where he, the mayor of paris and placed flowers at the memorial. Already this morning the u. N. Climate conference known at cop21 brought together 150 World Leaders and they, too, began by pausing to honor the victims of the terrorist attacks and already today president obama has met with the president of china. While they did talk about Climate Change, he also urged the chinese leader to do more in the fight against isis. Matt, savannah . All right. Kelly odonnell in paris for us this morning kelly, thank you. Learning more this morning about the alleged gunman at fridays deadly shooting rampage at a planned parenthood clinic in colorado and learning more about his victims as well. Nbc National CorrespondentMiguel Almaguer is in Colorado Springs for us. Miguel, good morning. Reporter robert dear is being held here at county jail on no bond. He will face a judge for first time from this facility later on today. This as we are learning more about the suspect in what some say are his antiabortion beliefs which may have been his motive. He lived in deep isolation. Robert dears dilapidated trailer in the middle of nowhere, 65 miles away from the crime scene, even in the small tart of hartsell few knew him. Just looked like a mountain markings like a dude living off the grid. Reporter reportedly a college graduate, dear will previously lived in North Carolina in a shack with no electricity, water or sewage system. Neighbors say he rarely spoke to anyone and had never been charged with a violent crime. Hes coming out. Hes got the ak. Reporter police say on friday dear unloaded a steady relentless volleyy of gunfire at a planned parenthood in Colorado Springs. The standoff lasted five hours. Were getting shot at again, shot at. He was willing to do whatever it took to lay down his wife. Reporter Jennifer Markovsky friend. Her father writing, life was too short, my beloved daughter and Kearre Stewart stewart, the father of two young girls, was there with a pregnant girlfriend of a child hell neve meet. He took away my only brother. The only brother i have and he took it away from me the its hard but i forgive him. Reporter planned parenthood executives believe they were targeted because they offer abortion services. Security stepped up at some clinics after so much bloodshed. Its a tragedy. Its a worldwide tragedy. Reporter detectives have not released a motive, but Law Enforcement forces tell nbc news after the suspect was taken into custody he rambled about president obama, politics and abortion saying, quote, no mar baby parts. Todays Court Proceeding is procedural, but the d. A. Will charges. Matt and savannah . All right, Miguel Almaguer, thank you. That shooting is pushing the issues of planned parenthood and gun violence back into the forefront of the president ial race as republican frontrunner donald trump faces fresh scrutiny over some of the controversial things hes been saying on the campaign trail. Nbcs Kristen Welker has more on that. Hi, kristen, good morning. Reporter matt, good morning to you. Thats right. The 2016 race is intensifying just as this debate surrounding planned parenthood is coming into sharper focus. While all of the Democratic Candidates responded to the shooting the night it happened condemning the violence and making it clear they stand by planned parenthood, many of the republican candidates waited until sunday to weigh in the. For the gop its more complicated because their base is largely prolife so they chose their words carefully. Gop candidates finally responding to the shootings of the planned parenthood facility in Colorado Springs. Its obviously a tragedy. Nothing justfies this. Reporter condemgt attack but stopping short of agreeing with critics, including the executives at planned parenthood who said that fiery antiabortion rhetoric contributed to this shooting. This is so typical of the left to immediately begin demonizing the messenger because they dont agree with the message. There is a tremendous group of people that think its terrible, all of the videos that they have seen, with some of these people from planned parenthood talking about it like youre selling parts to a car. Reporter meanwhile, donald trump is also not backing down after repeatedly insisting he saw muslims celebrating in new jersey after 9 11. This didnt happen in new jersey. There were plenty of reports, and youre it did happen in new jersey. Chuck, it did happen in new jersey i have hundreds of people that agree with me and by the way, you reporter trump also under fire for seeming to mock New York Times reporter serge cove lesk who has a genital joint condition after kovaleski challenged trumps claims about 9 11. Over the weekend trump again said he wasnt mocking the reporter. Hes using what hes got to such a horrible degree. I think its disgraceful, and i think the New York Times frankly should give me an apology reporter New York Times isnt apologizing, and trumps rivals arent buying it. Hes insulted other reporters, this one he absolutely mocked who was disabled. Reporter and some candidates are showing new strengths. Ted cruz is now just two points behind trump in iowa and Chris Christie picked up a key endorsement from the influential New Hampshire union leader. Meanwhile ben carson visited jordan this weekend aiming to boost his Foreign Policy credentials after a series of blurnders, including referring to some Syrian Refugees as rabid dogs. On sunday carson said the refugees he met werent they understand here that were talking about the terrorists. The Trump Campaign is cancelling what was initially dubbed a News Conference to announce the endorsement by about 100 black religious leaders after many announced they have no immediate plans to back him. Trump will still meet privately with those leaders and then head back out on the campaign trail as will almost all of the other candidates. Matt, savannah. All right, Kristen Welker, kristen thank you very much. Lets bring in mark halperin, managing editor of bloomberg politics. Good morning. This, before, donald trump says something that makes his rivals howl, the media howl and his numbers stay solid y. Should this be any different . His supporters dont care about this. Look, were two months away from iowa, particularly in the iowa caucus states and in New Hampshire where they vote in the primary, getting serious about this and the nominee is going to be donald trump or one of six other people who get hot at end get hot while trumps flaps start to weigh on the mind of voters. We heart same thing over and over again. The other thing we hear over and over again is the establishment in the Republican Party is panicked over donald trump, and they are going to band together to derail his campaign. Hasnt happened so far. What are their options . It wont happen. The establish cement worried about christmas and other things and recognize if its donald trump versus the establishment Trump Supporters will rally even hard around him. Its not about the establishment. Can i tell you who the nominee is going to be, its going to be trump or the person who gets hot. Who the establishment of the party doesnt like, if thats the hot person there will be a lot of rallying around that person. Lets talk about who is hot and who is not. Chris christie got a big boost this weekend by getting the endorsement of the New Hampshire union leader, incredible and maybe a life lock. In a crazy cycle where donald all these unorthodox things happening. Theres no dead man walking. Anyone on the stage can be the nominee. Chris christie proves it. Alot of people said no chance, not just his endorsement but other things happening with him. Hes in this game because he could be the hot candidate. Real, real quickly. The attack at the planned patient parenthood clinic in colorado. Theres no proof that there was a moist on the part of the gunman that was related to any of the rhetoric were hearing on the campaign trail, but does the attack take the issue of planned parenthood off the table for republican candidates who dont want to be seen or dont want to risk taking advantage of a tragedy or being on the wrong side of a tragedy . Certainly makes it harder to talk about it in political terms. Look, planned parenthood, gun violence, isis, theres so many big serious issues in a president ial campaign thats been like a circus. Now we have to see how candidates finesse talking about serious things, even in the context of this race. Were going to hold you accountable. Youll be here with us dozens of times between now and the conventions. Say were driving in the car, the candidates are. Forward and which is stuck in neutral and which canned skate in full reverse . Two gag farthest fastest ted cruz, senator from texas and Chris Christie. The ones going forward. Jeb bush is stalled. Hes in neutral. Not going back and donald trump i think right now is in neutral but headed uphill. And who is going backwards . Backwards right now i think is ben carson. Hes the one who has got to figure out a way to get a little bit more gas in the tank beyond what hes already done. Mark, i think weve stretched this metaphor as far as hugely possible. Classes cancelled today at university of chicago because of an online threat of gun violence. Nbcs justice correspondent Pete Williams has more on that. Pete, what can you tell us . Reporter matt, good morning. The University Says its responding to some information provided by the fbi that somebody posted a threat of a shooting attack this morning. That threat was said to come from an unknown person mentioning what the anonymous posting called the campus quad at 10 00 a. M. Cancelled all classes and other activities at the hyde park campus for the entire day. It also urged students who live in Campus Housing to stay indoor for the day. A public letter from the university of chicagos president Robert Zimmer says he acted, quote, based on the fbis assessment of this threat and recent tragic event at other campuses across the country. The University Says a visible Police Presence will be on and around the campus today. The fbi is investigating the source of the online posting, and this morning a Law Enforcement official says concern is decreasing as agents get a better idea of where this came from. Threats like this are a challenge to School Officials because they are hard to ignore, hard to ignore something this specific, even though its very rare for such an act of violence to be preceded by an actual threat. Matt . Pete williams on this story, pete, thank you. Now to virginia where a bus filled with College Students heading back to school after the holiday break. Natalie is following that story. Good morning. Three dozen passengers on that bus suffered injuries and First Responders say its a miracle only one of them is considered serious.
