WPVI Action News November 19, 2014
We are still on the cold side, though. There is still some wind involved and while your temperatures are a little bit colder than they were yesterday, down to 23 in philadelphia, 22 in wilmington, 21 in trenton, allentowns actually down to 18 and we are challenging some records around the region this morning. Allentown may be one of the spots that does hit a record low. And winds not as strong as yesterday but still enough to give you a wind chill making it feel like its 14 degrees. So, like yesterday, were starting out cold and its still a bit on the windy side so you want to bundle up also a you head outside. Pretty much similar to yesterday. And as we take a look at the starting the car weather, six to eight clock, only 22 degrees, mainly clear but obviously very cold this morning. As we roll through the day, a similar day as to yesterday. Were still going to see a high of about 33 at 2 oclock but the lows this evening and overnight are not going to be as bad and overall the winds arent as bad today. So, karen, still a day where you got to treat the cold, take it seriously but maybe a hair less harsh than yesterday. All right, dave. Weve got this problem from yesterday thats still affecting your morning commute. A multitractortrailer fire. It was a fatal accident and its still affecting the new jersey turnpike as you head northbound up near Mercer County between exit six and exit 8a. Its blocking the outer roadway, the section meant for the trucks and the inerode way is opened, thats where more of the cars go but now youve got all of that traffic just in the inerode way. Expect some delays if youre taking it later. You can use route 130 or route nine instead. Also this downed pole still out here 130 southbound approaching i195. Expect restrictions there. A new problem here in limerick township, its cold, sometimes the cars dont want to work. You have a disabled vehicle on benner road at louis road so watch for that. Outside on the schuylkill approaching Spring Garden eastbound traffic headed towards center city, no delays just yet coming from conshohocken or gladwyne. Looking good right now, matt. Thanks karen. We are flirting with record lows on this wednesday morning and this taste of deep winter is coming way too soon for most of us, i know some people somehow like it. Action News Reporter Katherine Scott bundled up for us is that live with commuters in the citys frankford section. Katherine. Reporter well, matt a lot of people saying like you said this is come very early this year and the worry for them is if it feels like this in november, whats it going to feel like in a couple months. Here at the Frankford Transportation Center this morning, not a lot of people lingering outside. Only those waiting for the bus. The rest of them are scurrying inside to try to get out of these temperatures. The wind gusts arent as strong as yesterday but were still near record lows for this time of year, so that cold shot of air you get when you walk out the door seems especially chilling this morning. Some we spoke to say they were prepared for it. They went in their closet, dugout their layers. They layered them on but others did not. I have on two pair of pants, three shirts and this. Reporter are they all working . Yes. Everything is working except my face is cold. Im freezing. Reporter what do you wish you had on. A lot more than i do now. [laughter] reporter poor girl. She said she was hoping to scrounge up a coat along the way. And you can see back here live at the Frankford Transportation Center people who are zipped up but tend to up, hoods and hats are on. Today is certainly not a day to skimp on those layers. Were live in frankford, Katherine Scott, channel6 action news. Katherine thank you for that. The polar cold is making for even bigger problems for people in upstate new york. A massive snowfall covered towns near buffalo and more than 4 feet of the white stuff is being blamed for at least four deaths. Our erin ohearn is live at the big board. Erin you grew up in this region. People up there are used to snow but this is something different. Not this kind of snow, tam. This is pretty incredible especially considering its november. It is november, right . Okay. So, look at these pictures cause they really say it all. I guess this as you could say this is old man winter knocking at the door. Look at that snow. It just pushed right through there, knocked through that door, one of the doors collapsed there and if you take a look at this thruway, this is likely the new york state thruway people are still stuck. Youre looking at probably they got up to 8 feet of snow and more is on the way. One more shot here. As you can see, the amount of snow, heres the bridge, you can see someone tried to get through there. Hopefully some Emergency Vehicle is paving the way for cars that, again, were stuck foreclose to 24 hours. About 8 feet of snow in some areas and it has been accompanied by high winds. Take a look at this time lapse video. This is you can watch the snow actually coming n it looks sort of eerie there over the buildings and the New York National guard was deployed to help out buffalo dig out. Officials say that 150 vehicles, many still filled with freezing drivers and passengers were immobilized on snow packed highways. As i said some for more than 24 hours. Now, talk about adding insult to injury, the Niagara University purple eagles Womens Basketball team was heading home from pittsburgh after a loss and their bus got stuck through the night. Take a listen. Theres nowhere to go. Theres nowhere to even walk to thats close enough that would be remotely safe to get to. All right. Now, possibly more than 90inches in some areas after another round of wintry weather hits at the end of the week and thats equivalent to a years worth of snow may pound some areas. Over just a threeday period so be thankful were just dealing with the cold here. Tam, back to you. Absolutely. Thank you, erin. Along with flames, firefighters battled freezing temperatures while confronting a house fire in north wildwood. The action cam was at the scene a little after 9 00 last night in the 200 block of west 17th avenue. Crews quickly brought that blaze under control at the two story single home. Theres no word yet on injuries. The fire marshal is looking for the cause. And a devastating fire ripped through the historic Columbus Farmers Market in Burlington County late yesterday afternoon. The four alarm blaze left behind a charred shell where the Main Building once stood here along route 206. The Farmers Market was not opened at the time. Merchants are wondering what the future holds for them now. From what the Fire Companies have told us, that the building were located in is just entirely gone. You know, so, everything we have is gone. The fire marshal in the Springfield Township Police department are investigating the cause of the fire. Merchants are hoping the outdoor flea market could partially reopen for the busy holiday season. David, winter is still more than a month away. Yeah, isnt that something . But it certainly feels like it. We were talking about that lake effect snow, erin had that. Sure. This is the typical time of year where if you get a cold snap youre going get that heavy snow because the water isnt anywhere near frozen yet, its very mild and as that westerly wind comes all the way down the length of that, it just picks up all the moisture and then hits that cold air, condenses and, boom, so no surprise given the cold snap weve got this time of year that theyre getting that snow up there in buffalo. Fortunately we are too far away from the great lakes usually to get much effect from that at all. As we take a look at storm tracker, theres no precipitation out there. Another look outside and we have the promise of sunshine later coming up on the shore. Theres Atlantic City looking south along the coast but it is going to be another one of those days where it is very cold. Highlights to your forecast. Well, were still in the 30s today. Tomorrow, thursday, we will creep back up into the 40s but then another cold shot arrives on friday so were not quite done with this pattern yet. Temperatures right now are colder than they were yesterday morning. Were at 23 degrees in philadelphia, just 18 in allentown, 21 in trenton, 22 in wilmington. Starting to get close to record territory in some of these cases, especially up in allentown where youre in the teens. Then as we take a look at the wind chills, the winds arent technically as strong as yesterday because the temperature is cooler, were still getting pretty raw wind chills. Feels like its 14 degrees in philadelphia right now. Single digit wind chills in allentown and reading currently and 12 in wilmington. Down the shore a little bit better but still another raw morning and you want to dress just the way you did yesterday with all that extra gear. Satellite shows you that you will need your sunglasses later on i95 and out the pennsylvania turnpike. Very little cloud cover out to the west. So, i suppose thats good. But like yesterday, its not going to help all that much. Up in allentown, lots of sun but still cold with a high of 30 and wind chills in the teens for most of the day up in allentown. Down the shore, like yesterday, a little milder, 36 but still pretty chilly and still a bit on the breezy side. Mainly sunny skies at the shore. And in philadelphia, mostly sunny skies with some high clouds, 33 degrees, not as windy as yesterday but still pretty uncomfortable. And theres how those numbers are going to go. Well be in the 20s in the morning and probably back below freezing by about 5 oclock this afternoon. Tomorrow, well, weve got temperatures in the morning in the 30s instead of the 20s so it will feel a little bit better tomorrow morning and in the afternoon we are going to get back into the 40s. Its not going to last all that long but we get a little break. Your sevenday forecast, still very cold today, a high of 33. Tomorrow not as harsh going up to 43 and then friday, a reinforcing shot of cold air zips us back down to 36. Still going to be chilly on saturday, partly sunny and 40. And then turning milder on sunday, looks like well get up into the upper 50s, maybe even 60 degrees for a high. It now looks like there could be an afternoon shower here or there and that could come in before the end of the eagles game so well keep our eyes on that. Monday still looks like kind of a damp day but a high of 66. Ill take it. Love it. And so will tam. Thank you david. 5 10 now. It was a fatal accident scene and its such a big mess that its still affecting traffic for you this morning. What theyre doing is blocking the outer roadway, you know thats when it splits and you can go off the trucks usually go on the outer roadway and cars go on the inerode way.
