The president never in form or substance directed or suggested that mr. Comey stop investigating anyone, including the president never suggested that mr. Comey, quote, let flynn go, closed quote. As the president publicly stated the next day, he did say to mr. Comey, quote, general flynn is a good guy. He has been through a lot, closed quote, and also, quote, asked how general flynn is doing, closed quote. Admiral rogers testified today that the president never, quote, directed him to do anything illegal, immoral, unethical or inappropriate, closed quote, and never, never, quote, pressured him to do so, closed quote. Director coats said the same thing. The president likewise never pressured mr. Comey. The president also never told mr. Comey, quote, i need loyalty. I expect loyalty, closed quote. He never said it in form, and he never said it in substance. Of course, the office of the president is entitled to expect loyalty from those who are serving the administration and from before this and from before this president took office to this day, it is overwhelmingly clear that there have been and continue to be those in government who are actively attempting to undermine this administration with selective and illegal leaks of classified information and pr l Privileged Communications. Mr. Comey has now admitted that he is one of these leakers. Today mr. Comey admitted that he unilaterally and surreptitiously made unauthorized disclosures to the press of Privileged Communications with the president. The leaks of this privileged information began no later than march 2017 when friends of mr. Comey have stated that he disclosed to them the conversations that he had with the president during their january 27, 2017, dinner and february 14, 2017, white house meeting. Today mr. Comey admitted that he leaked to friends of his purported memos of those pri Privileged Communications, one of which he testified was classified. Mr. Comey also testified that immediately after he was terminated he authorized his friends to leak the contents of those memos to the press in order to, in mr. Comeys words, quote, prompt the appointment of a special counsel, closed quote. Although mr. Comey testified that he only leaked the memos in response to a tweet, the Public Record reveals that the New York Times was quoting from those memos the day before the referenced tweet which belies mr. Comeys excuse for this unauthorized disclosure of privileged information and appears to be entirely retaliatory. We will leave it to the appropriate authorities to determine whether these leaks should be investigated along with all the others that are being investigated. In sum, it is now established that the president was not being investigated for colluding with or attempting to obstruct any investigation. As the committee pointed out today, these important facts for the country to know are virtually the only facts that have not been leaked during the course of these events. As he said yesterday, the president feels completely vindicated and is eager to continue moving forward with his agenda, with the business of this country and with this public cloud removed. Thank you. The president s personal attorney right there, Marc Kasowitz with a bareknuckled and brazen response to jim comey today. I am here with legal analyst dan abrams. First, he claimed to measure vindication saying that james comey confirmed publicly that the president wasnt under the Russian Investigation and there was no evidence any votes were changed. And thats true. The problem is hes quoting comey as the ultimate and definitive source in certain places and shifting when they dont like what he said to calling him the ultimate liar and then a leaker. You have three things that theyre talking about him. Believe him, dont believe him and hes a leaker. Saying comey is not telling the truth when he talks about the january 27th dinner when in his words the president said i expect loyalty from him and secondly, quotes about the february 14th meeting where he believes that President Trump directed him to let the Flynn Investigation go. Lets be clear. Theyre calling james comey a liar. Theyre saying hes lying about this. Theres no middle ground here. Hes not saying he may have misremembered it, yes, there were discussions about loyalty and he misinterpreted it. Theyre saying in substance and in form there was no discussion about loyalty, and as a result, that means that theyre saying james comeys lying and ive said this before, in theory that should mean theyre going to prosecute james comey for perjury because he was under oath. This isnt just going to be he saidhe said because james comey told others at the time. Thats right. That would make the lie that james comby is supposedly telling here even more fantastical. This idea that he decides to make up this lie and then tell other people about it and take notes about it shortly after the fact. Final point with you, this whole discussion of james comey admitting today that he had a friend leak information to the New York Times, the substance of this memo of the february 14th meeting, mr. Cass witkasow claiming this is privileged information that should not have been leaked. He used surreptitious, thats true. Unauthoriz unauthorized, thats true. He said privileged. The executive privilege could apply in this sense in trying to prevented someone from testifying, et cetera. He could invoke some form of an executive privilege and the problem with that, of course, that hes waived confidentiality on it by discussing these matters publicly previously, and secondly, you cant use executive privilege to cover up alleged misconduct and thats effectively what comey is saying that hes doing here. So i think that the notion that this is somehow Privileged Communications is simply not going to hold up. John carl, chief white house correspondent, on that point, as well mr. Kasowitz seemed to charge and say that mr. Comey had leaked this earlier than he said. Comey said it was in response to the president s tweet about tapes of their meetings. The New York Times is backing up comeys description of this. Yeah. In fact, it seems pretty clear cut, george, because the tweet that was referenced by comey actually came on may 12th, the New York Times story that quoted the memos came on may 16th, so a full four days later despite the fact that the charge here made by the president s lawyer was that the story came a day before the tweet. It seems that it simply did not. It came well after. John, pretty clear here that the president s attorney is digging in and doing what a personal attorney would do. I wonder what the white house is going to do when these questions quite naturally the next time a president ial spokesman is in the Briefing Room, how theyre going to handle it . My only real reference to something close to this was the days of the clinton impeachment scandal, and i remember wellbeing in that Briefing Room with mike mccurry, the press secretary and on questions related to the legal case would constantly refer it to the legal team and would not take the questions from the podium. I imagine thats a lesson they would try to learn from at the Trump White House if theres discipline. No answer on whether or not the president has tapes . No answer on whether or not the president has tapes and that would clear everything up quite beautifully and the president is the only person that has suggested there might be tapes, but they have not confirmed that.
