WRC Today November 24, 2013

Good morning. Breaking overnight, historic agreement. For the first time in nearly a decade, we have halted the progress of the Iranian Nuclear program. President obama hailing the landmark and controversial deal reached overnight with iran, this as afghan leaders agree today to keep u. S. Troops there for the long term. But will that countrys president sign on. The neverending storm, that massive weather system moving across the country now responsible for at least eight deaths and making travel nationwide a nightmare. Dylan is tracking it all. Back in the game. The Football Team from the tornadoravaged town back on the field giving so many there a reason to smile, and while the scoreboard may not show a w, they definitely feel like winners today, sunday, november 24th, 2013 announcer from nbc news, this is today with lester holt and erica hill live from studio rockefeller plaza. Welcome to today on this very busy sunday morning. Im erica hill. Im lester holt alongside dylan dreyer and Kristen Welker in for jenna. The Historic Deal agreed to overnight with iran. Secretary of state john kerry and other World Leaders putting the final touches on it all in geneva after a marathon negotiating session. Its a sixmonth agreement that will curb Irans Nuclear program by limiting their ability to enrich uranium that could be used to make nuclear weapons. As for iran, the upside for that country, it eases billions in harsh sanctions against the country. Meantime our ally israel is furious. Israels Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu calling the agreement a, quote, historic mistake. But president obama is praising the deal. He spoke about it last night. As president and commander in chief i will do what is necessary to prevent iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, but i have a profound responsibility to try to resolve our differences peacefully rather than rush towards conflict. Today we have a real opportunity to achieve a comprehensive peaceful settlement. I believe we must test it. We have our team fanned out across the globe covering the latest. We want to begin with ann curry looking at this iran deal live in geneva this morning. Good morning, what can you tell us . Reporter it was a dramatic moment late last night when after four days of marathon bargaining lasting deep into the night and involving no less than seven of the worlds foreign ministers, a deal was announced at nearly 3 00 a. M. Secretary of state john kerry says the deal allows iran to continue enriching uranium, but at levels well below what is necessary for bomb making. It freezes or rolls back other parts of Irans Nuclear program. That includes a much disputed heavy water plant that could produce plutonium for bombs. Irans foreign minister zarif told us in an exclusive interview that the deal does not halt construction of the plant. In return iran receives limited and reversible relief from sanctions, estimated at a value of 6 billion to 7 billion. While some have hailed the deal as an important first step toward a final comprehensive nuclear agreement, both irans foreign minister and secretary kerry were cautious. It is not hard to prove peaceful intent if thats what you want to do. We are anxious to try to make certain that this deal ultimately will do exactly that, prove it. If congress imposes new sanctions, what will irans reaction be . If there are new sanctions, then theres no deal, very clear. The first step is dead. There is no deal because of inability of one party to maintain its side of the bargain. End of the firststep deal and all hopes for a final comprehensive agreement . Well, i can only say that any new sanctions will be the end of the deal. Reporter as more details of the deal emerge, the political fallout is expected to intensify in both the yunltd states and iran and elsewhere as this deal has vast implications in reshaping relationships throughout the middle east, erica. Ann curry in geneva this morning, thank you. We want a little more perspective from andrea mitchell, our chief Foreign Affairs correspondent. Good morning to you. As ann pointed out, there are vast implications here. How significant is the agreement . It could be enormous. Picking up on what ann just said, this initial agreement could well be the first step toward a landmark accord that would change the global landscape, change the entire region and the world, not only on the nuclear front, but eventually returning iran for the First Time Since 1979, the community of nations. This would affect syria and the other neighbors as well. That is still a big if. There are disagreements today, erica, over what was agreed to. Irans president and russias foreign minister both said the accord ratifies irans right to enrich uranium. The white house says adamantly it did not. The truth is the final deal left that ambiguous. While this all came together very, very quickly, white house officials did confirm early this morning that top officials from the u. S. Have been talking secretly to iran. Dechity secretary of state, in fact, for at least a year in the persian gulf country of ohman, clearly they see this as a possible breakthrough and a major part of his legacy. There are plenty of critics on the other side, not the least of which is Benjamin Netanyahu which we just heard him call it a historic mistake. What are the biggest concerns of those critics . Its not just israel. But also saudi arabia and other leaders who have this historic shiitesunni split with iran and dont trust them and threatening to go nuclear themselves, the saudis have, if iran does proceed with its Nuclear Program, the Nuclear Program that iran says is peaceful but the saudis and israelis say it is not. Its not only israel, but israel is, of kourcourse, the most powl ally and the strongest political power here in United States there are many, Many Democrats and republicans, key Senate Leaders in both parties who are very strongly against this. They are going to be creating quite a fuss. The American People signaled in all of the polling on the syria potential of attack back on labor day that the American Public does not want military action. Without military action to stop Irans Nuclear program diplomacy, the white house would argue is the only solution. Andrea mitchell this morning, thank you. Now to developments in afghanistan. Big story overseas involving the future of american men and women in uniform. A group of elders in afghanistan has approved a deal that could keep u. S. Troops there for another decade. Chief Foreign Correspondent Richard Engel is in eastern afghanistan. Richard, good morning. Reporter afghan President Hamid karzai seems to be playing a dangerous game of brinksmanship. Today in kabul, thousands of elders gathered for a traditional loya jerga, they held a vote on a u. S. Afghan security agreement. After meeting for three days they decided they would approve this agreement this would set the framework that could have thousands of american troops staying in this country pumping billions of dollars into afghanistan for several years, perhaps a decade to come. The Afghan Tribal elders decided this was important for afghanistans future security, important to keep the Afghan Police and Afghan Armed Forces on their feet and fighting the taliban. But after the agreement, just a short while after the elders voted to approve the deal, president karzai said not so fast, hes not ready to sign it yet. First he wants assurances from the United States. He wants more signs of good faith. He wants the United States to stop entering afghan homes, stop carrying outcome bat missions, stop doing socalled night raids. This was something of surprise for many u. S. Officials who thought that this deal was going to be wrapped up today. It appears to be yet another negotiating strategy from president karzai. The question is what does he want . What is he negotiating for . Why is he holding up this deal . Is it for more money, for more authority, more weapons . Some afghan annual lie detector tests told us its likely about political power. He wants assurances that after elections in april when karzai is supposed to step down, his political allies will remain in power. Lester . Richard engel in afghanistan this morning. Thanks. Want to turn to the weather system that is pummeling people across the country. Janel klein is in ft. Worth, texas, this morning. Good morning. Reporter good morning, erica. The roads in texas and throughout much of the west are dangerous blamed for deaths and crashes, including one involving singer willie nelsons tour bus. The storm is not done yet. Heavy snow and near whiteout conditions brought traffic to a standstill in new mexico on saturday, not to mention the high winds. Hard to keep control of your car especially under the bridges and stuff, it whips you. We almost saw a semi jackknife in front of us. This storm is moving across the south and could reach the east coast this week. Of course, erica, that could mean some big problems for thanksgiving travelers. It could. A few headaches may be in store. Dylan is standing by at the weather map. It is interesting because it is so cold out there. By the time this storm makes its way to the east coast, its going to warm up enough that were not looking at a major snowstorm up and down the eastern seaboard for wednesday. Thats a big travel day. So that is good news. We do have very, very cold temperatures. Look at this windchill right now. It is 8 degrees, thats what it feels like in boston when you factor in the wind, along with those cold temperatures. Those are the numbers you have to dress for because the more you bundle up and the more you block your skin from that wind, the warmer youll feel, althoug. Although its 21 in cleveland, 29 in atlanta, where it feels like 19 degrees. I want to show you just how cold it is across parts of texas. Dallas is at 33 degrees, just barely above freezing. Houston is at 44. Were seeing mainly rain across southeastern texas. But the snow and ice from san angelo eventually into the dallas area and just north of that is where we have all of our snowfall, including parts of new mexico. So, we are looking at some accumulating ice. The fact that its taking a little longer to get to dallas than initially forecasted, we should see a tenth of an inch of ice in dallas. Abilene, texas, could end up with half an inch of ice, headaching who are of a travel thiet hair this that area. It should turn to hanlyeast. Well get to the rest of your National Forecast in a bit. This is a particular computer model that is indicating that we will get wind and we will get rain, but were not looking at a whole lot of snow. When you think about it, theres an entire culture where everyone takes off their shoes no matter what home youre entering, so it really isnt that far fetched. You can bring your own socks. I always bring my own socks. Do you really . I do actually. I left them at my friend missys house. In case it was a noshoe house, i bring my own. If its food, they may have their menu planned. I agree with everything you said except the food. Dont bring food to someone elses house unless they ask you. If they ask you for a dish, the. Oh, my god, i love that pie you make, then you bring it. Otherwise what youre saying is listen, i know that you do a great job with all that, but here is whats missing, here is whats lacking. You should ask, can i bring something. You can certainly ask. Im talking little treats for enjoying later. Absolutely, im totally with chuck. Weve got holidays coming up, fi bring a dish because they, believe me, have planned a menu. If everybody does that you have eight pumpkin pies. You can bring the wine home if they dont drink it, right . A little awkward. I mean that seriously. It came up. Someone said they would, they spent a lot of time. What you do is open it up at the house and start drinking right in front of them. That solves that issue. Also on our list, because were spending time with family and friends, is it okay to say to people, the thanksgiving table is a nophone this doesnt work . I think its okay. As everybody comes into the dining room. Dinnertime, put your phones away, leave them in the living room then youre not pointing out that one person at the table that has their phone and saying chuck, turn off your phone. It would be me. Youll cook a smaller bird, they take about 20 minutes a pound on 325. Here is the trick. If you want a moist beautiful tasting bird, youll take a stick of butter and add to that a garlic herb packet. It either makes a dip or soup, youll take that dry pact, put it with garlic and stir it up, youll put it underneath the skin and on top. Half and half. Its got onions, herbs and peppers already in with it. Whats going on with this cocktail . Lets get right to it. The beautiful thing about this is that its made and kept warm in your slow cooker, so you dont have to tend to it. You put in everything cold and heat it up over an hour on low. In here is two bottles of wine, theres red and white. One of each. One of each. Then you have whiskey in there. You can put more than one, depends on your guest. You can put whiskey or bourbon in here. Then also youll do some cherries, some frozen cherries, some frozen beaches and also cinnamon sticks, and then i also have sliced up oranges in here. That is really nice. The citrus really makes it lets talk pies. Everybody is scared of them. Youll do pumpkinsweet potato. Usually it we do both. Oh, look who shows up. Lester, youll be in charge of the pie crust. Youre on this side. Youve already pre baked this. Yes. What youll do is take a deep dish pie crust and fork it. Then youre going to blind bake it in the oven on 3475 for about ten minutes. That will give you a beautiful dark crust. Thats how you dont get a saki crust. The first layer in here will be your pumpkin cream cheese layer. You got to go full boat and the good stuff on the cream cheese. No reduced fat. Philadelphia cream cheese, no lowfat anything. Youre going to do pumpkin puree and maple flavoring. Pumpkin pie spice, sugar and an egg. Thats all that is. You are hitting the sweet potatoes, add sweetened condensed milk. And some egg. Two eggs. What is it about the sweet potato that goes so well with the pumpkin. The combination of the two, this is vanilla in here. Look at the pie. Youre going to wear this in a minute. Just real quickly . Ahead cant i can normally do it. See, its a weird one. Its not you. Its the mixer. So we layer this pour this on top. As you pour it on top, tell us how long it cooks for. We are almost out of town. An hour in the oven at 325. Weve got the real thing here. Just dollop the whipped topping. I love the cinnamon dust on the top. Thats a little weak on the whipped cream there. Here we go. You want a lot of whipped cream. Does it mix or remain laird . You can see the layers as it bakes. Taste that. Sandra, thanks very much. Today. Com for the recipe. Thanks for being here.
