Reporter debbie is a selfdescribed recovering shopaholoic, whose impulse to buy had taken over her life. It started as an insecure teen trying to fit and it continued to adulthood. I had three closets this size of clothes and my husband had almost no place for his clothes. I had clothes under the bed, clothes in a storage unit. It was out of control. Reporter so out of control, debbie began lying to her husband about her over the top shopping sprees. I would think, you know, how am i going to get this into the house without him seeing it . In the midst of all this compulsion, you often become somebody that youre not. Somebody that im not is somebody that lies and hides things. What was the breaking point . I noticed that i had a problem. I knew that my full. I was spending too much money. Reporter but there is a psychological explanation for why debbie and others like her need shopping for a quick fix. I was unhappy id shopped. I was stressed, i would shop. Anxious, wouldnt feel well, all these things. There was always an occasion. The shopping doesnt get rid of the problems. You escape from it for a period of time. Reporter for shopaholoics, stopping cold turkey doesnt always work. They may be more vulnerable at loss and there may be lapses but they have to be vigilant the rest of their lives. Reporter dr. April says they need to separate compulsion and asking by asking six questions before making a purchase. Why am i here . How do i feel . Do i need this . What if i wait . How will i pay for it . Where will i put it . Debbie used to spend fou a day thinking about shopping. She estimates it cost her about 100,000. You few years ago, she decided to confront her behavior, and she now shares her experiences on her blog. This sort of tracking of what i bought is and how often i wore it. It was part of what helped me to see it was a problem. Seeing the waste of it all. It does give me a lot of fulfillment, knowing that my journey and sharing my journey has been able to help other people. How much are you shopping now . I still probably, you know, shop every month. But i dont buy as much as i used to. Im a lot more targeted. So would you say youre happier now . I would say im happier than i was. I still have a ways to go with that. I think my marriage is happier because there is more honesty in it. Im a little more present now because im not so engrossed in the shopping. Debbie says while shes not fully recovered, shes shopping far less. She started a recovery shopaholoic, which keeps her accountable. She lists everything she buys so her readers can say, youre getting better. Its a hard line. Weve talked about this a little bit during the piece. Everybody likes to shop. A lot of people like to shop. But the internet has made it so easy to sit on your couch and go, boom, boom, ill take that. She said she wasnt enjoying time with her family, with her friends, because all she wanted to do was shop. Wow. It happens. Its like this mindless looking at the internet, scrolling through it. The last thing i want them to worry about is their dress. The days before are a little hectic. Probably more hectic than the day of. What are they doing during hair and makeup . Drinking champagne, calling their friends, screaming at you on the phone . Theres no screaming that it does feel like a celebration. He originally tried to do it in a neutral color but when she tried it on, we kept the lavender with the black accent. This was a dress we saw on Kendall Jenner on the runway, but it was modified. A picture of Kendall Jenner wearing the dress has already been seen. We wanted to modify it so it was special for julianne and felt one of a kind. Her dress last year was also ch chanel. Charli charlizes dress, she wore this beautiful red dior gown. We went through examples of red and kind of ended up choosing this really vibrant kind of lipstick color. Im really good watching you do it. Im about to eat the today show cookie here. Well add in the lemon zest. Lemon extract and vanilla extract. We have tasters downstairs. Easiest job of the last year. Loving. We couldnt decide which one to launch into so were eating them all. Look at your hair. Oh, my gosh. Then our flour. Dont make a mess. This is what w the consistency will be like this. You want it to be like playdoh. Knead the dough, sprinkle flour on the surface so it doesnt stick. Magically, itll roll itself out. Matt, this is new york, you know this, and i know north carolina, press it into the dough. It will come out. Mine came out with me. Well, i do this a lot. Its okay. Hold on. There we go. Then take it perfect. Place it on a sheet of lined wax paper. How long does it bake . 350, 8 to 10 minutes. Lets move on to the icing. We have powdered sugar, meringue powder and vanilla. What we have is the powdered sugar. Ill turn it on low. Add the water. Were going to add t powder. This stabilizes the icing and allows it to dry. Then we have the clear vanilla extract. Why not colored vanilla extract . Personal preference. We want it bright and white. Well add the food coloring later and want it to be true to color. Youll whip it up for a minute. Five minutes to get it nice and stiff. Thats what itll look like here. Great. Youve added the coloring in some of this. We have. How easy or difficult is it to actually ice the cookies . Easy. You can do it. Youll be great. Youll rock this. This is flooding icing, what lays down the base layer of icing. Itll be the consistency of shampoo or honey. What you have is piping icing. Its a consistency of toothpaste. Perfect. You start. How we do it. Some people outline the cookie. We keep it all with the same color. Id start at a corner. Matt, you can have this bottle. Too much water makes it tough. How do you know if you put too much water in . Then add a little more flour. You want to see the pieces of butter. You want to roll it out, the bottom crust, into an 11inch round. Divide the dough in two. Perfect for a doubletrusted pie. Which is my favorite. Can i freeze it if i dont use it . Thaw it before you roll it or itll be too hard. I blind bake the bottom crust so its not soggy. I dont like soggy bottoms. I dont either. Take a like size pyrex and turn the pie over so make it upside down. People have the pie that shrinks. Upside sure the dough doesnt sink and itll be fperfect. I cook the apples before i put them in the pie crust. The reason, it creates a caramel. Also, you dont get the gap between the crust and the apples. Its perfect. All right.
