Reporter now being called a hero, the deputy says he is often in that store with his own children and hes shocked that someone would try to snatch a child in broad daylight with other people around. Six times as many prescriptions for these drugs are being written for kids now versus 15 years ago. The fda has approved them for adults or kids with severe conditions but most kids get preskripr prescriptions for other unapproved uses, even eating disorders. One man wants it to stop. Every year 1 in 85 kids will take an medication. Some of the kids were younger than 2. This man says it is all too much. Are you saying theyre experimenting on kids . Absolutely. Absolutely. Reporter steven has worked in the world of big pharma for more than 30 years but he says his expertise comes from are something much more personal. Much more painful. He did not have a mean bone in his body. He was very loving. And could also be very scary. Reporter stevens son, andrew, was first diagnosed with ad hd in kindergarten. As loving as energetic as he could be, he could also be disruptive and full of rage. Desperate to help him, andrews parents took him to doctor after doctor who put him on a series of different drugs. Did you know those drugs as a parent . Had you heard of them . This is a whole sector that i knew nothing about and i trusted. Reporter when he was 14 his diagnosis and a new drug. Then the unimaginable happened db andrew died suddenly from an extremely rare side effect of taking antipsychotics. Even though it was listed on the drugs label, steven said he had never heard of it before. When you think about it now, what do you feel . Its a it comes in a pulse. Its like a wave of incredible emptiness. Reporter there was anger, too. At that time fda had not approved the antipsychotic andrew was taking for use in kids. Andrew was, in a sense, a guinea pig. They were testing whether this drug would work on him. But the doctors were allowed to do that. They are. Socalled offlabel. They go off what the label says and guess that it might help andrew. Thats correct. Reporter turns out the vast majority ofid antipsychotics off label. Is it safe . Well, there are some safety concerns with these medications. We know less about the effects of these drugs on the developing brain. Reporter leading researcher, dr. Mark olson, says only limited Clinical Trials have been done to see if antipsychotics are safe and effective for kids for these offlabel uses. We need far more studies that are looking at effectiveness in safety of these drugs as they are actually being used in the community. Reporter nearly everyone we spoke to for our report, from doctors to the fda, to the drug industry, agreed we need more data. The side effects of these drugs, the power of these drugs, is no longterm studies and thats a shame. That should be a priority in this be country. The fda declined to talk to us on camera, but one former fda official says offlabel prescriptions, including antipsychotics for kids, can be helpful, even life saving. And going to college is an option, then and law school and the peace corps. It all starts on the dance floor. Imagine a place where each step gives you hope with that soar. And tiny dancers whose toes dont stop tapping, helping young girls take steps in the right direction. Its just such a source of pride. Reporter abby started groove with me hoping to make a difference with the power of dance. And what is it about the magic of a dance floor that gives a girl confidence, do you think . I think tap, more than any other type of dance. You can hear it. You got it or you dont got it. When you get it, it sounds awesome. And you know, all the dancers like that. Girls from kindergarten to High School Seniors take class offered six days a week. The lessons go far beyond the dance floor. It is about dance, discipline, and rules. I joined abbys hiphop class with some very talented 5 and 6 yearolds. Oh, i that was so fun reporter it didnt take long to get the magic of this place. Okay. This is so exciting. Im going to sleep. Oh, my gosh its me say what you want to say i want to see you be brave wow that was awesome that was awesome. Then, i got school by some of my favorite dancers. I have a couple associates that are i have one that has had her baby already. And i see that theyre struggling. Like if she would have just came to groove with me, i think her life would have been like way better. Reporter shayla graduates high school this spring. Shes joining the navy and has big plans. But she says she will always come back to her second home. My home isnt just a place where like you have a roof and four walls. It is a place of love and affection and caring and where like you build these friend sshs that are everlasting. One of my favorite organizations. When a survey conducted by the Federal Reserve board asked respondents how theyd pay for a 400 emergency, 47 of americans said they would have to cover the expense by borrowing money or selling something, or that they wouldnt be able to come up with the money the a all. If youre part of that 47 , our chatzky is here. You know what struck me . That 400 is not really a lot of money when it comes to a real financial emergency. Thats right. 400 could push a lot of people over edge. Whats really scary about this is we are watching our Credit Card Debt numbers tick up very quickly. We are almost at 2008 levels. We put out the call online for people who found themselves in this same situation and they could ask you their questions. Kelly from milwaukee. Im recently divorced, and while i make a nice salary, in any given month i would have a hard time coming up with 400 in the event of an emergency. This past month, for example, my basement flooded. In order to clean that up i had to set a couple of bills aside that i couldnt pay. In addition, i have two teenage daughters who when they need money i give it to them and that adds up over the course of the month. Shes got issues with spending, then that issue with giving her kids money. Thats right. So we dug in. Was just track her spending. She had to figure out where that money was actually going. And what she found was shes going to the Grocery Store four different, five different times a week. We put a lid on that. Shes spending a lot less. Also with the kids, she was giving each teenager 20 each week, adds up to 160 to 200 a month. Its summer. Theyve put out notices. Theyre going to get jobs, babysit, walk dogs. You think you can come up with the 400 that way. Very quickly. Next up with be j, jen and a maine. We have two children with medical issues. If the time were to come that they needed medical care or got sick, that i would not get paid to stay home with them. So therefore, our bills get behind and the medical bills come in and we need to pay them. Jen andda in a position a lot of people do. Medical expenses. By the way, medical expenses are really tough but a lot of people believe theyre not negotiable, that you cant shop around for things like prescription drugs. Thats an entire different segment but you can and you should talk to your doctor about lowering the price. Meanwhile, well find their 400 by working on their monthly expenses. They got a lot of redundancies. 400 on cell phone bills, plus bills from land lines. We cut some of those expenses. Immediately found 60 a month. Shes working parttime but shes got to work to bring in additional income while staying home. Took a look at her skills and recommended she look for jobs as a virtual assistant. Because her salary goes like this and she needs to steady it out. She just needs to bring more in. Next up, just continue frin cincinnati. I currently work two jobs, one is commission without benefits. Because i dont get aul difficult to make ends meet an plan for each month and plan for the future. The guys working two jobs and still has this 400 problem. Thats right. Hes working two jobs but his income is not steady and he needs to do whats called income smoothing. Take his income for six months, divide by six so he knows what his monthly income really is. That way he can stay on a budget. Hes also too overreliant right now on his parents. While they are helping him out which they are right now i want him to super charge his savings and figure out what it will cost him to actually move out. You need a goal to work toward in order to get yourself there. Kudos to the parents who are helping as so many parents across the country are. Absolutely. We have an amazing story of survival. Three men are saved after their maul plane stalled midair over the mountains in British Columbia in canada on sunday. The men were taking a short flight from vancouver when the 81yearold pilot, vern hannah took a wrong turn and was forced to emergency an Emergency Landing on the but, my friends, he stuck the landing. Now we can all get front row seats to this party at sea because the craziness is documented for the reality show rock this boat. Well, in truth, it started about 25 years ago . We did a cruise when we were compelled. We did a cocacola cruise, did a huge Promotional Campaign called a magical summer tour. As a gift to the fans we did a cruise. It was the worst thing ever. The fans were kids. It was total mayhem. You couldnt even move an inch. Before it was bedlam. May be a hit now but it was bedlam then. It was out of control. Thats when you left ship, right . You left ship . I had a helicopter land on the ship and i flew off. Because it was so crazy. So they say. Thats a myth, bro. But now it is much more fun. Now we decided i going on our eighth year. Well this is seven . Were watching seven, were going to do eight in october. At first even we were like cruise, i dont know if this is going to work out. It is so hard to describe to people how much fun it is. Were all on this boat an we just want to give our fans the time of their lives for four and five days. Weve been able to do that. And finally we dont have to explain. We can just say watch tv and rock the boat. I dont think any other group does Something Like this. You are trapped on a ship. There are other groups to do it. I think when we tell people we go on a cruise with our fans, think a lot of people like, oh, you go on a cruise, you go and read books and relax yeah. Have a nice time. Thats so nice. But its really like a fiveday crazy party. It is a party. Mayhem, not bedlam. You can see in the clips how our relationship with the fans is you know, as jorda cruise, jordan escaped the boat. We just hid in our cabins and we didnt want to be a part of it. Now fans have grown up and we have grown up. Married with children. Were so grateful to have this opportunity together. Our fans give it all back to us. They decorate their doors, they bring costumes for the parties. It is like spring break on a boat. He and i were sitting and listening to the album when we finished it in my studio in los angeles. And we kind of looked at each other and said, you know what . If we sell ten of these, we already won. You know . Youre happy with it. Because we were happy with it. That was really the first time in our career that i really kind of felt like that.
