E1fa fiery t nifacrash. Crews sifting through the. Smoldering wreckage this morning. How did the two trains end up on the same track. And strong start, Michael Phelps shines at the u. S. Olympic swim trial. Today wednesday, june 29, 2016. Narrator from nbc news, this is today with matt lauer and savannah guthrie, live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. Good morning, welcome to today on a wednesday morning. Happy to have tamron hall here once again. But sadly we start the morning with yet another terror attack affecting the world. This one in istanbul, our top story. The death toll climbed to at least 41 people. As weve said, more than 140 others were condemned the bombing this morning, all flights from the u. S. To astan bull have been suspended. Richard engel is at the airport in istanbul. The governor said of those killed, some of the victims have not been definitively identified. The Prime Minister said that isis is the likely suspect, that the attackers arrived in taxicabs, got out of their vehicles and started their attacks. The cleanup this morning and tightened security after three suicide bombings at one of the worlds busiest transport hubs. Security cameras captured one of the at istanbul airport. The explosion crushed a glass wall. People were shooting on one side and we all ran the other way and the bombs went off, and then there was more shooting. There was panic. Passengers hid or ran for their lives. Police reacted swiftly and bravely, and Security Camera appears to show an officer shoot another attacker who drops his gun, and the policeman backs away soon before that detonated a bomb. Nbc news reported earlier this month that isis had moved more than 35 militants from its base in syria into turkey to carry out attacks during the holy month of ramadan. The airport attack was highly likely connected to the isis planning and said more attacks could come in the final days of ramadan, which ends this week. I must say this city and the airport have recovered quite quickly, and work to rebuild already has begun and flights resumed and passengers came in and out of the city, very different than what we saw in brussels where the airport was shut down for days. This city is calling on World LeadersRichard Engel of eus stan bull. Now executive Vice President working with the federal government working on National Security matters. Michael, good morning. The video were seeing out of the airport, the Surveillance Video, is both horrifying and extraordinary. Based on what youre seeing, based on the coordination, based on the target, do you agree with the others who are leaning toward isis . Shoabsolutely. It wassophisticated, targeting western civilians. And its very unlikely to be one of the kurdish terrorist groups which really focus on turkish targets, Turkish Security organizations. This will turn out to be isis. What about the timing here . Turkey has been criticized even by the u. S. For not to keep syrian fighters there going in and out of syria. Isis fighters. The timing of the end of ramadan, a busy time and why do you think they would strike now . Isis has been pushing for attacks during ramadan, and turkey has been a very tough ally in this fight against isis, really up until last july they were not doing as much as the u. S. Would like to stop people from getting into syria and iraq, but beginning in july they turned that around and are conducting air strikes and artillery. Lets talk about the specific target. Its an airport and it strikes at the heart of tourism, and in europe and other capitals they have done the expanding of different, by the way, of what we do in this country, they stop people before they enter any airport facility and check tickets and baggage, and the terrorists know they are gathering points and strike at the soft targets. You are right, matt. Moving security away from the planes is a good thing, and we have to have security for the bags and getting people on the plane, and as you push the security parameter out, its not like the terrorist threat goes away, it adjusts to the other checkpoints, and they pushed it out but not before the line, and isis knew they could get to that area and target westerners. Over the holiday, you can push the security parameter out. There are Real Security vulnerabili. Perspective. Thank you very much. The attack in istanbul like the march bombings at the Brussels Airport occurred before the checkpoints. Nbcs tom costello is at Reagan National airport for us this morning. Good morning. Reporter the United States lifted the ground stop where flights leave the u. S. For turkey, and meanwhile to pick up on the conversation with michael liter, its all a target. At select u. S. Airports this morning high profile Tactical Police units increased their visibility, an added deterrent right after the istanb istanbul. No airlines can fly directly to the u. S. If that airport does not meet security standards. That includes the people on the aircraft, the crews that manage the aircraft and the cargo that goes onboard that aircraft. Is that security good enough . We insure it is. With the travel season in full swing, eliminating the tsa lines we saw in the spring is a logistical priority . Making sure that does not continue to back up so you are creating a soft target in the public areas. And the tsa is responsible for screening, and some unions long complained of too many Access Points and too few armed officers. When they can spend millions or beautification projects, they surely can spend that money and use that money for security improvements. This morning a renewed focus on security on both sides of the checkpoint. Nationwide the number of airport parameter Access Points vary from airport to airport. Theres no national standard. The tsa is pushing airports to limit those but theres still no agreement on that. On the campaign trail, donald trump and Hillary Clinton are weighing in on the attack interkea. Peter alexander has that part of the story. Good morning. Candidates with dueling responses to the attack. Donald trump casting himself as the strong man, calling for the u. S. To, quote, fight viciously and violently because he says were dealing with violent and vicious people. Hillary clinton presenting herself as steady handed saying the attack only strengthens our resolve to defeat the forces of terrorism. Repr turkish airport attack, donald trump donald trump with this dire warning. Folks, theres something going on thats really, really bad. We better get smart and we better get tough or we are not going to have much of a country left, okay . Donald trumps comparing to. Trump did reiterate his call for waterboarding and says even that you have to fight fire with fire. For Hillary Clinton, no Public Comments on the attack but this statement targeting the u. S. Cannot retreat and pushing to deepen our cooperation with the allies and partner to defeat radical jihadism, and then a report blaming the administration for four killed americans, and still no smoking gun. I will leave it to others to characterize this report but i think its pretty clear its time to move on. Her campaign posting this video hammering the investigation as a political charade, and trump fundraising off the promise electing him this fall will help get hillary indicted. Pushed by special interests, want to rape our country, a continuing rape of our country. President obama dismissing trumps effort to cast himself as a champion for american workers. Hes hardly a spokes legitimate spokesperson for a populist surge for working class people. The Trump Campaign reportedly lining up a roster of iconic sports name to appear in cleveland next month, and that includes mike tyson, and trump said tyson has not been asked to speak but i am sure he would do a good job if he was. In other news this morning, federal investigators are at the scene of a firry fiery head on train crash. Three crew members still missing after trains collided head on. The question is why were the two trains on the same track. This video capturing the moments right after impact, just 9 00 a. M. , the two freight trains collided near the town of panhandle. This is a mixed freight primarily with consumer good. Smoke could be seen for miles away. Officials say as the trains barreled down the track towards each other, one man jumped off the train to save his life and the search continues for the other. We are still in search mode for the other three employees. Their families have been contacted and at this point we can get closer to examine the scene and then we will proceed. The cause of the crash is still unknown. For today, jan newly released 911 call logs from the orlando massacre. The death toll rising from the terror attack at the International Airport attack in istanbul. A little earlier this morning we talked to richard to town. I asked him to describe what he saw and heard. We were headed to the passport Security Control and all of a sudden people turned around and started running towards us and people were screaming and we heard people yelling bomb, and people yelling there was a gun, somebody had a gun and people started hiding out between objects and waiting for news of what was going on. That was the general mood of the situation for about three hours, kind of waiting around in the airport, waiting for information, and after exiting the buildinwe of the damage, a lot of smashed glass, collapsed ceiling, blood on the floor and a lot of clothing spread across the floor in suit cases and chaos outside the building as well. People kaeupcame and gathered tt for friends and family and to take away the wounded. We talked down the highway a few miles and caught a ride into town from a random stranger and even in situations like this, the random acts of kindness and the kindness of strangers prevailed. That was a little earlier this morning, he and his wife at the airport as this unfolded. Him talking about the random act of a stranger there. Yeah. We have changes going on in the southwest. Its that time of year you have a big area of High Pressure moisture out of the gulf, the gulf of california as well and the gulf of mexico and it combines and so we start to see the southwestern monsoons, increased storms and the heavy rain leads to cooler temperatures, but they need the rain. Tucson gets generally 6 inches of rain out of the monsoons yearly, and they pick up 12 inches of rain, and for albuquerque and tucson they get nearly half of their average rainfall out of the system, and so the flood threat will increase daily and with the thunderstorms you may see gust storms and haboobs.
