And we are grieving with them. We are live with the latest on the deadliest attack on u. S. Law enforcement since 9 11. Today, friday, july 8th, 2016. This is special edition of today. Tragedy in dallas with matt lauer and Savannah Guthrie live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. Good morning, everybody. Good morning, everybody. Welcome to today. Its friday morning. We have willie in for matt. We are waking up to a shock, 11 officers shot in dallas, five of them have been killed. Lets get right to this breaking news. Heres what we know. It started before 9 00 local time in dallas, a march protesting this weeks officerinvolved shootings just wrapped up. As we were killed and four from the Dallas Police department and the fifth was a dallas area Rapid Transit officer. President obama spoke earlier this morning and said he was horrified by the attack, and called it vicious, calculated and despicable. Lets start with Gabe Gutierrez at the scene. Reporter it was a protest against Police Violence and then violence erupted. 11 officers shot this morning, five of them are dead and much of Downtown Dallas still on lockdown and we just learned authorities finished sweeping the area for explosives and found none. After this weeks shooting deaths of a black man in louisiana and minnesota, and what began as a peaceful protest in Downtown Dallas turned suddenly into chaos. Terrified demonstrators running for cover, and cell phone capturing the barrage of gunfire. Shots fired, officer down. Its an assist officer. One officer ditching his motorcycle taking cover. I just saw cops bending over me, and there had to be cops all getting shot down. We heard the shots and i saw one of the officers land on his stomach and he was not responsive and they rolled him over. Ing overnight, shocked confusion. Dallas coming to grips with an unfolding national tragedy. We saw a baby stroller left in the street, and i guess the parent was in shock. And a tense standoff under way, and a suspect cornered and exchanging gunfire and then a woman taken into custody near the garage and two people seen leaving in a mercedes stopped and questioned. Told our negotiators that the end is coming and hes going to hurt and kill more of us, meaning Law Enforcement, and that there are bombs all over the place in this ra downtown. Within minutes bystanders heard a blast and by 2 25 local time that suspect was dead and police swept the area for possible explosive devices and found none and a massive investigation under way after the deadliest attack in the u. S. On Law Enforcement since 9 11. This all happened not far from daily plaza. This city is grieving after another national tragedy. At least five officers murdered in the line of duty. Willie, savannah. Thank you. It bares repeating, this is the deadliest attack against the police in the u. S. Since 9 11. Can you see it on the officers standing here, on their out here all night dealing with the tragedy at the loss of their beloved colleagues and friends and you had some that showed up with protest with anger towards officers who are praying for and standing in solidarity with the officers. This morning officials with d. A. R. T. , confirming the death of brent thompson, the 43yearold officer killed in the line of duty since 1989, and he joined the force in 2009. D. A. R. T. Posting this, as you can imagine, our hearts are broken and this is something that touches every part of our organization. Three other d. A. R. T. Officers were shot in the attack and the other officers shot and killed worked for the Dallas Police department. Tpau lawn dough kau steal. 6 event. The department tragenot wearing gear. Seeing the courage and professionalism and just the grit to stay on scene in an area looking for suspects knowing that we are vulnerable. I can tell you, i have never been more proud of a Police Officer and being part of this great noble profession. Reporter and no doubt we expect to learn more about the condition of those six officers who are wounded but so far survived their injuries later at a press conference in a half hour. Were told the d. A. R. T. Officers who have been injured are expected to survive. Willie, savannah . Jacob rascon, thank you. Were joined by dallas mayor mike rawlings. Mr. Mayor,oo we just want to send our condolences to you and your community and the community of Law Enforcement. Our hearts are with you on a very difficult day. Thank you. It is painful morning. I was with families last night. Officers last night. This is a terrible blow to the city of dallas. A terrible blow to the United States of america. And it calls for us to come together at this time and hopefully love one another deeply. There are so many questions this morning. As we understand it, the police have three suspects in custody and one suspect was killed in a shootout with police. Have you learned anymore about who these suspects are, what their motivations or affiliations might be . Were undergoing an intense investigation au bringing in everybody looking at all of the backgrounds and we dont have any information at this time. Were glad that we took down one of the suspects and we are hopeful that we have got everybody, but we dont know that for sure. Are suspects in custody cooperating with police . Are they talking to your investigators . Theyre not at this point. Theyre subjects that were just interviewing. Theyre being pretty tight lipped at this point. Mr. Mayor, its willie geist. We appreciate you taking time with us this morning. Have they given any indication or Little Information they have provided of what their motive may have been in that shooting last night . Its simple. They wanted to kill Police Officers. And sadly they did. That teaches u Police Officers stand between us and every day tragedy. These men that put their lives on the line last night and lost them, and weve got to get to the bottom of it. More importantly, we have to lift up the families right now and lift up every officer in the United States of america. This is what happens day in and day out. Mr. Mayor, you mentioned at your earlier press briefing this was a coordinated triangulated attack was the word you used with multiple shooters that had experience with long guns. Have you learned anymore about how they planned or carried out this attack . Weve got some reports out there but they have not been confirmed. At our morning press conference, hopefully well confirm those and be able to give you more information. At this time we dont. Before we let you go, mayor, i know its a busy day. There are six wounded officers. A wounded civilian. Do you know anything about the their conditions this morning . I want to make sure we get the numbers right because 12 officers were shot. Eight were Dallas Police officers. Five are dead. Five were transit officers. Two civilians. One male and one female. No one died there. So those are the numbers that i got when i walked in to my office just a moment ago. Thank you for that updated information. Obviously well pass that along. Mayor rawlings, again, our condolences and appreciation for your time, sir, this morning. Thank you, sir. We feel the prayers. Thank you. The victims include members as we mention of both the Police Department in dallas and the dallas area Rapid Transit authority. Gary thomas is d. A. R. T. s president and do you have an update for us on the condition of those wounded officers . We have one officer was preparing to go into surgery. Anot one officer was preparing to go into surgery and another being evaluated for surgery and one was released to go home. Are they all expected to survive, chief . Yes, those three are expected to survive. There was nothing life threatening at that time, but they are going to have to undergo surgery. Mr. Thomas, what was the role of the d. A. R. T. Officers at that event. What was the role of we actually run the Transit System and we have train lines that go through downtown and theres a rail station that was very close to where the protests was going on, the event was going on, and our officers were there to make sure that our patrons and customers riding the trains and buses were able to get on and off the trains and buses in a safe and efficient manner, and that travel on the trains and buses was not impacted by the event nearby. Was there any indication to you or Dallas Police there was anything suspicious, was there reason to believe there would be heightened concern . We did not have any reason to believe that we were going to have something to occur of this nature. I must say even though we didnt training of our officers as well as the Dallas Police officers was very appropriate for the circumstances that occurred and the officers wanted to immediately make sure that the protesters were safe and getting to those officers wounded and then trying to engage those suspects, and accidentally i think that reduced the number of injuries because of the Quick Response and actions of not only our officers but the Dallas Police department officers, we saw less injuries to protesters as well as to the officers because of their Quick Response. I want to ask you in closing, chief, and mr. Thomas as well, tell me a little bit about officer thompson, frank thompson, the man. Well, he was a great officer. He served as a patrol oer tonight and he was also a he also performed as a rail officer, and i would like to point out, brett was recently married in the last two weeks, so this is very heartbreaking for us, but not only for that reason but because we lost a member in blue and we received sympathies and calls and emails all across the country from Police Departments as well as citizens throughout the u. S. And canada and england as well as here in the north texas region. But brett was a great officer and we will definitely miss him and we are also making sure his family is taken care of and thats where our attention is focused now, and with the Dallas Police department making sure we are there for them with the investigation and the care and wellbeing of their offi also. Married within the last two weeks, officer brett thompson. We are glad to hear other officers wounded in the attack will in fact, survive. Thank you. Thank you, gentlemen. The president was quick to denounce the attack and addressed the shootings from the site of a major nato summit in poland and ron allen is joining us from wore saw. Mr. Obama visibly troubled and upset. I believe that i speak for every single american when i say that we are horrified over these events and stand united with the people and the Police Department in dallas. Reporter president obama saying he offered his condolence police force, and mr. Obama said he still reached one unmistakable conclusion. Let me be clear, theres no possible justification for these kinds of attack or any violence against Law Enforcement. Arriving in warsaw, the president condemning for the killings. And i get letters, wellmeaning letters sometimes from Law Enforcement saying how come we are under attack . How come not as much emphasis is made when Police Officers are shot . To all of Law Enforcement, i want to be very clear, we know you have a tough job. Today thees dallas. Lets call for americans to say a prayer for the officers and their families and to keep them in their thoughts, and as a nation lets remember to express our profound gratitude to our men and women in blue, not just today but every day. Reporter and the president said the nation must confront the reality of how easy it is for somebody to get their hands on powerful weapons. Ron allen traveling with the president in warsaw. The latest Police Shooting streamed live by the victims girlfriend. And joe has more on that investigation. Reporter willie, good morning. Protesters here in minnesota say they are sad by what happened in dallas and one person telling us two wrongs dont make a right and several videos as evidence including squad car video as the community here remembers the man that died. With castiles Family Gathering outside of the school where castile worked and was known simply as mr. Phil. It leaves a hole in my heart. And hes always been the kind of guy you can trust. He was shot by a Police Officer during a traffic shot. You sought four bullets into him, sir. He was just getting his license and regisat the moments before the shooting and she says they were pulled over by two officers for a broken taillight. As fur hrapb dough kau stcas reached for license, he said, i have a concealed weapon, and the officer began to shoot. Its critically for to remember despite the graphic nature of the video that theres a great deal we dont know about what happened and why. The medical examiner confirms castile did die of multiple gunshot wounds and local and state leaders calling for an expedited investigation saying they do not want to wait months for this unfolding story in dallas and we will have more just ahead. And dylan is here for al this morning. Good morning. I am storm team 4 meteorologist, chuck bell. And heat index near 100 again this afternoon, and there will be a chance for stronger thunderstorms today moving through the metro probably as early as 2 00 to 5 00 or 6 00 this evening. Good morning. Its a sunny and hazy start to the day and already in the mid to upper 70s across the area and plan on another day of high heat and humidity, near 95 for our temperature this afternoon and thunderstorms coming our way and some could be strong to severe midafternoon to late evening so have your nbc washington app ready to go. Another update in 25 minutes. Back to the today show after this short break. Were back. 7 30. Its a friday were back at 7 30. Its a friday morning, the 8th of july. We have harrowing images, a tragic story, snipers ambushing Police Officers at the end of a peaceful protest. A fourth suspect is dead after a standoff. Reporter good morning. We have 11 officers who have been shot and five of those who have been killed and we are waiting on updates and conditions of the other six officers and we know three of them are expected to survive, and were not sure about the other three. At 8 58, our Worst Nightmare happened. The nightmare in Downtown Dallas, an active shooter. Market and lamar, assist officers, shots fired. Shots fired, officer down, its an assist officer. Dallas police on high alert racing towards the gunfire. All s. W. A. T. Officers on channel two, saying the suspect has a rival. Because i am a gun owner i knew it was an assault rifle. But police cant find out where he is at. Officers are being gunned down. All of the cops are getting shot and i saw cops bending over, man, there had to be five or six cops all getting shot down. My cars shot, and let them know i am coming. The news is bad. We three passed away and one in surgery. Its not one suspect but potentially several snipers picking off police. Working together with rifles, try triangulated. Two caught leaving the scene and police are negotiating with a fourth who is still shooting and a chilling new threat. The suspect we are negotiating with told our negotiators that he is going to hurt and kill more of us, and that there are bombs all over the place. Five hours after the first shots are fired police say the first suspect they have been negotiating with is neutralized, and no bombs are found and more heartbreaking news for the dallas pd, we are sorry to report a fifth officer has died. Confusing and agonizing sas of course, the investigation is just Getting Started and what a massive investigation. The dallas mayor says, of course, they have reached out to the fbi and atf and as you heard there in the spot, they have found no explosive devices, and they are just now starting to pick up the hundreds of pieces, if not thousands, of evidence. Willie, savannah . A long investigation ahead. Thank you. Given the timing of the attack of the demonstration, thousands of people caught in the middle of the chaos, and we have two with us now, and good morning to both of you. Good morning. Given everything that you witnessed, how are you feeling and doing this morning . Tired. Yeah, were doing good. We are glad little tired but no worse for the wear. Can you tell us what you experienced last night . I experienced a lot of fear and a lot of terror and a lot of frustration and anger. All of the emotions a very emotional night, not something i anticipated. Not in the least bit. It wasnt exactly how i thought the night was going to end, but were safe, so that in itself is a blessing. And you arrive at the protest and you said they were breaking up peacefully and Police Officers telling people to disperse and go home and what did you see and hear at that point . After the organizers said the night was done and everybody was headed east on commerce and in about two minutes or so i heard a shot and i didnt know it was a gun until i saw everybody start rushing towards me, and i was like, what i ran back as well and we all huddle up together and we continue walking forward again and we realize more people are running, and they said there was a shooter. We had to figure out what was going on. My wife was not with me at the time and once we found out it was shooting the we called each other. We were separated at the end of the rally and was headed on commerce towards our car, and i heard the first shot but, like him, i didnt realize it was a shot. The crowd there was screaming and pandemonium, and i saw the police car run past and all i did was find a place off to the side and get could figure out what was going on, and my first thought was i need to get to my car and i need to get out of here. What a terrifying experience for both of you, and as i said, we are glad you are okay. Thank you for taking the time to talk to us this morning. We appreciate it. Thanks, guys. Lets get a check of the weather from dylan in for al. We are keeping an eye out for more storms to redevelop today, and louisville about to see heavy rain. We have a few areas of severe storms possible today and one is back through the plains and the larger one including the eastern great lakes and includes washington, d. C. And passes through pittsburgh and stretch into roanoke as well, and we could see large hail and wind gusts up to 60 miles per hour, and we cant rule out a tornado, but its not going to be a tornado outbreak. You notice this front will ge shower or brief thunderstorm, especially across the northeast later today and then the cold front itself will continue to bring more storms tonight and throughout the day on saturday on the east coast. Good morning. Temperatures are in the mid and upper 70s now and as she was mentioning, we have a chance for strong to severe thunderstorms here today and heres future weather to help time it out, by 2 00, likely to be a line of thunderstorms from frederick, and those storms could come through the d. C. Area between 2 00 and 6 00 this evening, and thunderstorm chances could linger into the evening as well, and drier weather continues for the weekend. Dylan, thanks. Officers providing security at a rally last night officers providing security ambushed by snipers. Lets bring in a couple experts. Shawn henry with the fbi, and Clint Van Zant here this morning. Thank you both for being here. Shawn, what strikes you about the facts you see so far this morning . When you think about something getting out of control at a protest, you dont think of snipers try ange lating. Try ange yao lating. Appears thd out. Whether they were looking for the right opportunity and peaceful protests in dallas presented that opportunity. This appears to me to have been planned for some period of time. Im sure well find out they were communicating as this event unfolded and talking to each other whether by radio or cell phone. This is in my opinion everything that ive seen, these are trained people that have been planning Something Like these are trained people who have been planning Something Like this for a time. Eyewitnesses said they saw and this goes to shawns point that this was something wellplanned out and thought out. How much planning and how long would it have taken to arrange this . Watching this last night, it was almost like you were watching a firefight in the middle east, not something you would see on american streets. What bothers, i think, so many people if you want to say both sides whether its the black lives matter, white lives matter, and we all matter because its red blood on the street, and many police of the 1 million in america, they feel like they have targets on their back, like fry them like bacon, and then we see this. A balance there and right now i think the men and women in blue really feel like that target is getting bigger on their backs. Let me ask you, shawn, about what we know about the suspects, which is very little. We have the dallas mayor on a little earlier that said the suspects who are in custody arent talking, and they are being very tight lipped and the suspect cornered in a garage that was killed in a firefight with police said things like the end is coming so you are talking about pretty defiant hardened suspects. What do you make of that . We dont know the motivation and hopefully that will come out in this investigation, and that will go on here in the next few weeks, but it appears its potentially connected to the incidents that we saw in the last couple of days with Law Enforcement officers involved in the shootings and this type of demonstration. When they talk about the end of near, it talks abot out to launch some type of attack and were looking for the appropriate time and opportunity, but statements like that demonstrate, i say the clear defiance for Law Enforcement and the need to make this very strong statement. It feels like we wake up every morning to a new normal, and is the new normal for Police Officers, where they have to sweep for snipers on the tops of buildings . Theres a term that Police Officers use and its called professional paranoia where you are always sweeping behind you as well as in front of you because you feel like this could happen to you. The reality has come home. My background, part of it as a hostage negotiating, so we had a barricaded subject but they may have well been connected with isis because they were not trying to talk their way out and all they wanted to do, it appears, at least in one case, cops as they can and die. This is part of a new normal for Law Enforcement where our old tactics of Law Enforcement, 85 of the time we are going to talk them out. These people didnt come necessarily to be talked out, they came, as the mayor says in dallas, they came to kill cops and they were unfortunately, highly successful. For now back to the today show after this short break. Its 8 00 on today. Coming up, chaos in coming up, chaos in dallas. 11 officers shot during an ambush on police during a protest. We have more on the investigation. And then getting set to leave center stage. From internet phenom to global superstar, performing on our concert. We will get out there in a few moments, but terrible breaking news out of dallas. The frightening scene in dallas, police ambushed by snipers and several suspects in custody and another dead, and the search for a motive under way. The Mayors Office just confirmed that 12 officers have been shot and two civilians have been shot, and much of Downtown Dallas is still locked down and we just learned that police have finished sweeping the area for explosives and found none. It was a protest against Police Violence when violence erupted. Go go terrified demonstrators running for cover. Cell phone video capturing the barrage of gunfire. Shots fired and officer down, its an assist officer. Was five or six cops all getting shot down. Authorities calling it an ambush and at least two snipers in elevated positions. These suspects were positioning themselves in a way to try ange late on these officers. In the downtown area d planned to injure and kill as many Law Enforcement officers as they could. Reporter for hours shocked confusion. I saw one of the i saw one of the officers land down on his stomach, and he was not responsive. Reporter an intense standoff under way, and a suspect cornered in a parking lot and exchanging fire with police. Told negotiators the end is comingnd and kill more of us, meaning Law Enforcement and there are bombs all over the place in this garage and downtown. I was reading this morning, ice age set to be one of the biggest animated Motion Pictures in the world. Its huge. Amazing. Its so exciting to be doing another one. Just getting to see it yesterday. Animation is crazy. Its so funny. So many characters. All these new characte favorite is the character that starts the trouble every time and almost ruins the world. And then wanda sykes voice characters and anything they say is so funny. Especially wanda. She got more one liners in this movie. What . Its fantastic. Im curious how an artist that does so many things like yourself, you can sing, you do broadway, you dance, how do you approach an animated feature because its different from what you do. You want to come into the studio with very soft clothing on. Its one of the best gigs because you dont have to do hair and makeup. No jewelry and soft things. You dont want it rubbing up against. The mike will catch it. You want to do stuff like that. Just kind of let your imagination fly. And get into it. After four movies, i feel ray ramono. We never worked in a studio together but thats my husband and we have a child who is peaches. Our daughter. So after all these films, you get used to it and you watch it build over time. I look at you, you got your films. Tv shows. Youre running your entertainment company. Do you have a favorite lane or is it one of those things where you like to do it all . I do like to do it all. I think ive always been the type of person who likes to do many things at one time. Whatever i felt capable of without stretching myself too thin. I really like a challenge and im bored easily. If im doing one thing over and over and i kind of got it it no longer pushes me. Im one of those people who needs to be pushed and has to step out of her comfort zone and feel like im really doing something. I grew up in new jersey like you did listening to your music and you always had a message in your music, as you watched what happens over the last two, three, four days with the Police Shootings and then the shooting of police in dallas last night, what are your though6 c13 c1 news special report. Here is Savannah Guthrie. good morning. As we come on the air the mayor of dallas is addressing reporters giving information about this series of shootings in dallas overnight. 12 officers killed, two civilians killed as well. Lets listen in to mayor, mike Lieutenant Governor flew in last night and the president called me from poland and all your commentators have wished us well and are praying for us and i want to say from our heart we feel that, and so thank you. I am now going to tell you some not good news for you reporters and that is we have got a criminal investigation going on, and our number one job is to make sure the citizens of dallas are safe so were not going to tell you anything about the suspects and were not going to answer any questions on that. We will when its the right time. Nows not the right time. But a lot has happened in the last five or six, seven hours since we talked i guess it was early in the morning, and i want chief brown to give you an update on that. I am proud of him. Hes been working so hard these last few hours, and we have been with families and we have been trying to make sure that the city is safe this morning, and i believe it is. Chief brown. Thank you, mayor. Were hurting. Our profession is hurting. Dallas officers are hurting. We are heartbroken. There are no words to describe the atrocity that occurred to our city. All i know is that this must stop. This divisiveness. Between our police and our citizens. Citizens. to update you on whats transpired since to update you on what transpired since we last spoke, let me walk through the standoff that had occurred or that was occurring at el centro on the second floor of the college there in Downtown Dallas. We cornered one suspect, and we tried to negotiate for several hours negotiations broke down and we had an exchange of gunfire with the suspect and we saw no other option but to use our bomb robot and place a device on the on its extension for it to detonate where the suspect was. Other options would have exposed our officers to grave danger. The suspect is deceased. As a result of detonating the bomb. The reporting that the suspect killed himself is not accurate. We have confirmed that hes been deceased because of the detonation of the bomb. Our Hostage Negotiator did an exceptional job getting this suspect to talk before he died. During the hours of negotiating that eventually broke down. I want to share with you some of the comments from this suspect. The suspect said he was upset about black lives he said he was upset about the recent Police Shootings. The suspect said he was upset at white people. The suspect stated he wanted to kill white people, especially white officers. The suspect stated he will eventually that we will eventually find the ieds. The suspect stated he was not affiliated with any groups and he stated that he did this alone. This suspect said other things that are part of this investigation so we can make sure that everybody associated with this tragic event is brought to justice. So as the mayor said, we wont ex other suspects we have interviewed or looked at or their status until we get further into this investigation and get closer to a conclusion of what who are all involved. But let me just say, just some closing comments about Dallas Police officers. And d. A. R. T. Police officers. Some of the bravest men and women you would ever want to be associated with, you see video footage after video footage of them running toward gunfire from an elevated position with no chance to protect themselves, and to put themselves in harms way, to make sure citizens can get to a place please join me in applauding these brave men and women who do this job under great scrutiny, under great vulnerability, who literally risk their lives to protect our democracy. We dont feel much support most days. Lets not make today most days. Please, we need your support. To be able to protect you from men like these who carried out this tragic, tragic event. Pray for these families. I spoke with the deceased and the injured, and they are not having a good time trying to deal, absorb this and trying to understand why, and they need your prayers, so please join us in helping us comfort the grieving officers families, and i trust that soon, because we are working very diligently in processing the crime scene to find evidence to bring any other suspects to justice that were part of this, but please, pray for our strength through this trying time. Thank you. I want to add that there are Public Safety officials that protect our cities and our institutions all acrossri every day that arent Police Officers, and we lost one of those last night, a d. A. R. T. Officer was one of the victims, and i want to just take a moment and say the professionalism the d. A. R. T. Organization was great, and i appreciate Better School Police Officers, Campus College Police Officers, Standing Shoulder to shoulder with our Police Officers and thats the way we work. Chief brown told the victims families last night and the Police Officers that he was a man of faith, and i am a man of faith, too, and we need prayers and prayer is good, so today at 12 00, at thanksgiving squar Leadership Group of inner faith ministers will be leading us in that prayer. I would ask that if you are at your home or at your office or at your school to join us today at noon in that spirit of prayer, to bring our city together and our country together to heal wounds, not create them. Thank you. Any questions that are not off limits . Reporter [ inaudible ] . The injured officers, most of them have been released. There are some that will need followup. I will not go into the detail of what types of injuries right now excuse me, what was the question, im sorry . Reporter are they critical . Yes, some have been released and some of their status, they are still needing more treatment but they are being very private about any further details about their health. Reporter [ inaudible ] . Can you speak to that, that Something Like this can happen. We have to be right in 100 of the time in the way we police this city, and suspects like this have to be right once and they dont have to work hard to do cowardly acts like this, to snipe at our officers from elevated positions and to ambush them. Corners, and all that hard work is not for not. This city has shown support, and we expect that to continue and this community, i am born and raised here, and dallas is a great city. Our officers will continue to put themselves in harms way to protect these great citizens. So its worthwhile. I want to brag just for a second, if anybody has not heard us say this, this Police Department trained in deescalation far before cities across america did it, and we are one of the premiere Community Policing cities in the country,an the fewest Police Officerrelated shootings than any large city in america. So we are working hard to prove, and theres always room for improvement, but we are best in class, we feel. Reporter the people in dallas watching at home, are you confident the threat is now over . No, i will not be satisfied until we have turned over every stone. We have some level that this one suspect did do some of the shooting but we are not satisfied we exhausted every lead and we are not going to be satisfied until every lead is exhausted so if theres somebody out there associated with this, we will find you and we will prosecute you and we will bring you to justice. Reporter as of right now, its a total we are not counting or expanding on who or how many. We are going to keep these suspects guessing. Reporter i know your first focus right now is on the officers and the investigation, but can you or the mayor talk about the impact this will have on the way demonstrations are conducted . I will let chief brown make any strategic decisions, but i think its important for citizens to realize that we want to give everybody their freedom of speech. We have been through several protests in the last five or six years and they have all gone in a safe manner. But the chief makes decisions at times critical of, deescalate too much, putting too much body armour on, and if we are too critical of those things, think about today, this is what you are risking if you dont do it right. From a policy standpoint, we are we believe in the right to protest peacefully, and these were peaceful protests until this happened, but we also have to believe in keeping our Police Officers safe, and i know i am going to redouble my efforts to that. Reporter [ inaudible ] . Again, i just want to expand on the mayors comments. Police officers are guardians of the great democracy, the freedom to speech and expression, and all freedoms we fight for with our lives, and its what makes us who we are as americans. So we risk our lives for those rights. So we wont militarize our policing standards, but we will do it in a much safer way every time, like we chose to do it this time, we had an adequate amount of officers at this scene and we were blocking traffic and doing all the things to protect peoples rights to protest and their free speech, and we are not going to let a coward who would ambush Police Officers change our democracy. Were not going to do it. Our city, our country, is better than that. Reporter in reporter can you say at all if this was somebody who was having mental stability problems and just looking for an opening to the act or is this something more organized . Can you talk about that . All of those questions would be speculation to answer. We cant get into the head of somebody like this, and we negotiated with this person and they seemed lucid during the investigation, and he wanted to kill officers and he expressed killing white people, he expressed killing white officers, and he expressed anger for black lives matter, and none of that makes sense, and none of that is a reason, a the rest of it would be speculating on what his motivations were and thats what he said, thats what he said to our negotiators. You guys, thank you, and we still have a lot of work to do so we are going to take off. We have been listening in to the mayor and police chief. I misspoke earlier, 12 officers shot and five killed and we are told most of the injured officers are recovering and some have been released from the hospital and we learned from the News Conference that the suspect that was having a standoff with police in the garage through the hours of the night was killed by a bomb detonated by the Dallas Police and he did not kill himself as had been reported in some quarters. I want to go to Gabe Gutierrez on the ground. He mentioned the suspect had been speaking to the neia anger and the desire to kill white people, specifically white officers and the suspect claimed to act alone, and we know of three other suspects in custody, and what did you make of that and do you have any further clarity . Reporter this is the most e detail we heard about what the suspect said during the negotiations, and he didnt mix words, he wanted to kill officers, and he wanted to kill white officers, and he was upset with the black lives Matter Movement and he was very upset over the recent Police Shootings that happened this week in louisiana and minnesota. There are three suspects in custody according to what was said earlier in the day, and the chief would not go into details about that. Earlier in the day and overnight hours as well, they s on the officers and however, according to the suspect what he told negotiators that he acted alone, and i just spoke with the organizers of the rally and he said he has absolutely no idea why somebody would do this and this rally is among the largest they have had in the black lives pha Matter Movement, and they had nearly 1,000 protesters, and he was standing near the front when the first officers were shot. We just came from louisiana, and we were there yesterday and drove here overnight and what the Community Activist said, they kept asking for calm in these protests. There have been several protests, not just in baton rouge and in minnesota and throughout the country and many people who are ups kept stressing there needed to be peaceful protests. Apparently this suspect decided to take it into his own hands and police say that he specifically targeted these officers in a calculated ambush, and right now there are some questions, however, savannah, of whether he acted alone and police are not ruling anything out. You have been covering one of the stories that have been going on this week which is the shooting of alton sterling in baton rouge, louisiana, and then the next day another shooting of castile in minnesota. There was protests and thats what led to last nights events. Jim, we call on your expertise and we know you are grieving with your Law Enforcement colleagues. It sme suspects had some kind of tactical expertise, and you are talking about a sniper or snipers in elevated positions earlier described as triangulating to get after their targets . Thats right, savannah, and people can pick that up quick, and it could be a police veteran and doesnt mean he is a total s. W. A. T. Tactically trained, and when he moved from the pillar, he moved far away, i noticed. What the killer says is so important. That is his motive. This is a premedicated firstdegree murder and an assassination and an ambush and hate crime. He hates the police and he hates white police, so its all of those things wrapped up into one, and was were there any other guns recovered. The chief talked about one shooter, but maybe some other conspirators that could have been aiding and abetting, and some of the most unusual tactic that the s. W. A. T. Command used here to detonate a bomb to kill a suspect with it, one of the bombsquad robots, and i dont recall a case in america although i am not saying theres not one somewhere, where a bomb was used by the police to kill a suspect, and the last i recall was in philadelphia in 1985, and it was unusual, the parking garage, the location, and they couldnt get to the ramp and had to use the robot to take him out. They felt there was no other option at that point. Jim cavanagh, thank you. And to update everybody, 12 officers shot last night in dallas, and five of them killed. Two civilians shot as well, and one suspect dead. Three oth at noon local time in dallas, the mayor has asked for the community to pray and ask the country to pray along with them. We have a lot more on msnbc, nbcnews. Com, and well turn most of you over to today. Welcome to today. Its friday morning, july 8th, 2016. Im willie along with dylan. Tamron and al are off. Ellie kemper joins us. A shooting during peaceful planned shootings in louisiana and minnesota. Four officers in dallas killed were from the dpd, Dallas Police department. Third was a dallas area Rapid Transit officer. His name is brent thompson. 43 years old. We learned in an interview on this show this morning that he was married two weeks ago. We learned at a press conference this morning that one suspect was killed when police sent in a robot with a bomb and detonated it. In the press conference moments ago Dallas Police chief talked about what happened in dallas last night. Were hurting. Our profession is hurting. Dallas officers are hurting. We are the atrocity that there are no words to describe the atrocity that occurred to our city. All i know is that this must stop, this divisiveness between our police and our citizens. The suspect said he was upset about black lives matter. He said he was upset about the recent Police Shootings. The suspect said he was upset at white people. The suspect stated he wanted to kill white people, especially white officers. The suspect stated he will eventually that we will eventually find the ieds. The suspect stated he was not affiliated thats the chief there talking about the death of four Dallas Police officers and another Transit Authority Police Officer in the shooting last night saying that the shooter in there back and forth with the one man eventually killed said he was there to kill white people. Mike rawlings is the mayor of dallas and spoke to me and savannah this morning. He wanted to kill Police Officers and sadly they did. And that teaches us that these Police Officers stand between us and everyday tragedy, these men that put their lives on the line last night and lost them, and we have got to get to the bottom of it, but more importantly we have to lift up the families right now and lift up every officer in the United States of america, and this is what happens day in and day out. President obama is in poland, and he saw the attack as vicious, calculated and despicable. As i told mayor rawlings and i believe i speak for every single american, when i say we are horrified over these events and stand united with the people and the Police Department in dallas. According to police, there are multiple suspects. We will learn more undoubtedly about their twisted motivations, but lets be clear, theres no possible justification for these kinds of attacks or any violence against Law Enforcement. Thats the second time in a few hours presint obama addressed the country from overseas in poland and he talked about the shooting in baton rouge and minnesota. This is the biggest loss of life of Police Officers in a single event since the attacks of september 11th in this country. Lets go to dallas Gabe Gutierrez is standing by with the latest. Good morning. Reporter willie, good morning. We just heard from officials here and the police chief gave the most detailed account so far of what the suspect said to police while he was barricaded inside that parking garage this morning, specifically he said he didnt want to just kill Police Officers but white Police Officers and the suspect said he was upset about the recent Police Shootings across the country, of course over the past few days we have seen those protests in louisiana and minnesota, and there has been a lot of anger throughout the country, but up until now those protests have been peaceful for the most part, and they have had a few arrests in few parts of the country, but this suspect, again, said he wanted to kill white Police Officers, and the suspect told police he was acting alone and he also said according to the police chief he was upset with the black lives Matter Movement. This contradicts doesnt suspect said he was acting alone but police have three suspects in custody. The police chief would not give any more information about that and is not ruling anything out and in this these types of cases they need to track down every lead but right now its unclear if it was just this suspect or perhaps another sniper. Earlier in the day, police said there had been at least two snipers that open fire on these Police Officers. The latest numbers we are getting from the Mayors Office is that 12 officers were shot and five dead and two civilians were also shot but survived. Again, we are learning for the first time what the suspect told police during these negotiations and we also learned that early this morning sometime around 2 30 or so local time the suspect was killed by police when they sent in a robot to detonate a bomb. Again, 12 officers killed, and willie, five excuse me, 12 officers shot, willie, city is devastated. Thank you. Those were Police Officers protecting the protesters. Obviously something that is hard a a tv journalist to make the transition between the story everybody is talking about and trying to put a smile on peoples faces, especially this early in the morning, and i think we have a story that certainly could put a smile on your face this morning. It has to do with this little girl and her love of the movie frozen, of course, and this girl got a special frozenthemed surprise. She was born without her right hand and wrist and she was surprised with a custommade prosthetic for her hand that featured frozen, and it was developed by a group of students and they made a 3d prin t make it happen and look at the smile. And she identified with the character elsa because she is different and she is different than anybody else and they want to show why thats better, and just really sweet to realize, you are a little different, but theres nothing wrong with that. Nothing wrong with that and that can be a good thing and use that to your own advantage and power. Frozen still making an impact. I have not seen frozen. Me neither. I avoided it many times. Not because its not good, and i saw it once, and if you have Young Children you could see it thousands and thousands of times and i have to slip out the back of the room sometimes during the screenings. Whats the highlight . Its crazy. Its just all happening. I cant really focus on one thing. They are all fun in their own ways. It was so much fun going home and graduating with my friends and seeing all of those people and going back and realizing none of them ever treated me differently. It was an eye opening experience. But then i come here and do what i just did and its insane. There has to be screaming and crying when you go back to your high school from freshmen. I stand outside. In case you did not hear that, he called everybody out there beautiful. All the girls sitting out there, shawn mendes called you beautiful. Were so happy were so happy to have you here, man. You filled up the plaza. You are going to sing your latest song a little later for us. Coming up next, ely is going to tell us about her role in the secret life of pets. I am aaron gilchrist, and were just getting word the capital, the United States capitol has been placed on lockdown this morning and the last few minutes this happened and staffers being told to shelter in place. We are hearing at this point that searching for an individual. You are getting a live picture of the capital dome. We know the sergeant in arms in the senate said this lockdown was issued this alert was issued for the building and for the Capitol Visitors Center because of the Police Activity and the Office Buildings are open. Normally the galleries there inside the captol building would be open at 9 00 this morning, but at this point as we are short of 9 30, 9 20 right now, we dont expect there would have been visitors inside the Capitol Building and we dont know to what degree staff is in the capitol or represents or senators are in the building, but we can now that the u. S. Capitol building itself and the Visitors Center are both locked down right now as Capitol Police are searching for an individual and thats something we have been able to learn so far for what is happening at the Capitol Building. This lockdown would have started a few minutes ago, probably around 9 15, and as we are looking at this live picture, not much activity to see at this point, but the indication we are getting right now is that Capital Police are moving possibly around the grounds there and are inside the Capital Building looking for an individual. You are looking at a picture at staff wary hall in the Capitol Building and we see somebody off in the distance and we dont see Police Officers in this particular part of the building and you saw somebody walking Vantage Point for a moment. We know votes that have been scheduled for today have been delayed and that is coming from our Scott Mcfarland, and the capitol has been locked down and you see a Police Officer there standing at the door there in sta staff wary hall. A notice went out and we believe two people there that work on the hill telling them to close, lock and stay away from all doors and windows, to sort of make sure they are aware of where any emergency equipment they might need, and telling people to shelter in place and silence their cell phones to not draw attention wherever they may be inside the capitol property. We understand there would have been full staff on the hill in the Capitol Building and Office Buildings surrounding it, but as a result of the lockdown those folks are being told to stay wherever they are in the Capitol Building and not to move around, and this is coming as we have moved through the night and this morning incident in dallas, texas, involving a dozen Police Officers and the deaths of five Police Officers and several others have been shot from a sniper as a black lives matter protest was happening in the city, and as we look here, theres now word the capitol has been placed on lockdown and theres a search as we speak capitol as a result of police came across information they need to find a potentially suspicious person, and as we approach 9 25 on this friday morning a. Very busy friday morning as it has been as we have watched news come from texas, now word again that the u. S. Capitol building is on lockdown and the Office Buildings surrounding it at this point are open, and they would have been busy in the offices this morning as there would have been votes in the chambers on the hill, and at this point that has been suspended and the votes have been delayed. Scott is joining me as we continue this coverage of the we have a source telling us Capitol Police and Law Enforcement on the hill are looking for somebody who they suspect might have gone past the security checkpoint with a suspicious package, and lockdowns are consistent with the fear that somebody has brought a firearm on the grounds, and right now we have a source on capitol hill, a woman potentially, she has a suspicious item got past one of the many checkpoints on the hill, and if you have not visited the hill, every public entrance, either a garage or door is armed with two officers, and everybody who enters the grounds aree and if somebody gets past one of the checkpoints, they change the technique and protocols and that often precipitates a lockdown. There are several entrances to each of the Office Buildings on capitol hill, and the capitol itself, not too many entrances, and any idea where this person may have entered . We have a note that the lockdown is at the visitors senator, and each has two or three entrances, and Capitol Visitors Center has many as well. This is a busy day, and a lot of checkpoints and perhaps the maximum number of checkpoints because its expected to be a high volume to reduce the number to a couple possibilities, but if you lockdown the Capitol Building and the visitorss center, it could be she did not go through the other centers. Business was supposed to begin in the senate side at least starting at 10 00 this morning, and we got the word around 9 15 there had been a lockdown put in place at the capitol and the Capitol Visitors Center, and doesnt look like there would have been visitors from the public, but moving outside the building and as we look at one of the outside Vantage Points, you were able to see the grounds just a little bit, and we could tell there didnt seem to be a lot of activity outside the building, and so one might assume that the search happening might be hni building itself, or inside the Visitors Center to make sure nobody who should not be in there was in there and to make sure they have an understanding of what that person may have been carrying. If you have a lockdown on the Capitol Grounds, what does that entail . Heres the instructions given out when you have a lockdown. All staff and visitors at the capitol, close, lock and stay away from doors and windows, which, of course, there are many, and take emergency kits and move to your offices assigned shelter in location, and thats where where the chiefs of staff and scheduling assistants have their desks in the back center part of the offices and if you are not near your office take shelter in the office nearest to you, and you go to the nearest open door and lock down with those staffers, and you silence your phones, and while they are on lockdown y cant enter or exit. You dont just go to your desk and hangout there, you go to the nearest place in which you can take shelter and get behind a locked door with strangers or colleagues, and i was in a lockdown in a building when cars backfired, and i was locked down in a closet of the raburn building that i didnt know very well, and you go to the nearest place you can find that is secured and locked. About a dozen times in the last three years, people have been stopped at Capitol Grounds checkpoints with firearms and in each of those instances, the person was stopped along with the firearm. If this is a case where somebody got past the checkpoint with a suspicious item, that would be a first in recent years where somebody was not stopped at the checkpoint with something suspicious. As we now, i want to reset for everybody who might be just joining us, this is the extended News Coverage of a locke down of the United States capitol that was put in place just after 9 00 this morning, there was a woman that made it through security with something suspicious, and they moved to lockdown the Capitol Building and the Capitol Visitors Center as well, and searching for the woman. We mentioned the fact that the Visitors Center would have just been getting ready to open and the chambers, the galleries for the house and Senate Chambers just opened on the house side, and on the senate side scheduled to hope now and thats not buildings that surround the capitol itself are open as usual, and Scott Mcfarland with me now, and its safe to assume staffers are moving around on the grounds. Most friday mornings you have a skeleton staff and no votes or members of congress in town. This is different. At least three u. S. House committees were scheduled to meet, including the house of benghazi committee, and friday is always the earliest votes of the week because they want to get on a plane, and so an uncommonly busy friday morning for Something Like this to happen. Not that security protocols are different, and this activity happening on a quiet friday morning would still trigger a lockdown, and between 11,000 and 15,000 work as staffers in the u. S. Congress. We have producer, and security is trying to look for a individual that snuck past the screening with something suspicious. Magnetometers. If we are able to switch back to the other camera angle, we were in the center of the Capitol Building and you can see off in the distance Police Officers moving through the building, and you saw one with the reflective vest on and another one closer to the foreground here standing at the entrance of this round space inside the Capitol Building, this is part of the lockdown situation where you are going to have some officers who are moving through this building, the massive building, trying to make sure that they theres no threat searching for the person they are looking for and others who would seem to be more stationary and still at a heightened level of alert trying to assess the space theres any cause for concern here in the hall, and i cant help but note this is happening against the back drop of the activity in dallas over the last 12 hours or so where we learned that there was a protest that was happening, a demonstration happening in Downtown Dallas, the black lives Matter Organization having come together to protest the policeinvolved shooting in louisiana and minnesota, and someone, we know at least one person open fire on Police Officers there in dallas. Five officers were killed and a total of 12 people shot in that incident, so that is forefront in peoples minds and particularly in the minds of Law Enforcement this morning as we as they are going to be obviously very cautious and moving through the Capitol Building in washington but aware of what happened in dallas as well, as officers here searc woman there on the Capitol Grounds. You are seeing two Vantage Points now. Inside that staff wary hall. We know in the Capitol Building and Visitors Center theres a search happening for somebody that got past security. There are 1,700 or so u. S. Capitol Police Officers, and you have a large force to respond to anything like this. Pictu picture capitol hill, and you see it here, and beneath the ground theres a spider web of tunnels, funnels that connect each individual building on the u. S. Capitol grounds to each other and you can walk from one corner of the Senate Building to the raburn House Office Building and do so completely beneath ground and there are funnels from the capitol buildin to the house side and senate side and theres an elaborate web of tunnels that need to be policed and there are metal detecters, even though you already got yourself through a house building, they check you again before you can go to the Capitol Building, and theres so much space to cover but its also worth noting that when you lock it down, you significantly minimize the people going through those hallways. The hall this time of day with votes scheduled should be hopping right now, and members walking to and from their offices and you see how empty it is, and you see nothing but u. S. Capitol Police Officers. And by ordering the lockdown, they minimize the traffic they have to work through to check all of these spaces, the many spaces above and beneath the ground. You think about the idea of locking down a building of this siz a would be to go through every possible space and you go through all the bathrooms that wouldnt necessarily be locked doors, without somebody going with a key and unlocking them, and you have to go in every office of the building, and to make sure people in those rooms have identification and are supposed to be in those rooms. We have our producer on the phone with us, jen vazquez. Can you describe what you are seeing and hearing . Reporter we are currently getting moved to a secured room here and we are in statueary hall, and the house was supposed to be gavelled in at 9 00 a. M. , and as soon as that was gavelled in, and there was a security and police ofcers in the hallways and a lot of lawmakers that we have seen, several of them, five of them, they were just escorted to different rooms. And we just overheard that now the lockdown as concluded. I dont know if you could hear it on the loud speakers, but the lockdown has officially been concluded so it appears everything is going back to regular order. Okay. Jennifer vasquez, our producer, there at the capitol hearing the lockdown is over. And we have bits of information coming in from different sources. You have a message from Capitol Police. I think we ha lockdown, and it seems to have been limited to the capitol itself and the Visitors Center, and the lockdown had been limited to the Capitol Building and Visitors Center and what u. S. Capitol police announced about two minutes ago, and i will read this verbatim, out of an abundance of caution the capitol and Capitol Center was on lockdown while the police investigated a person of interest. If this is limited to the Capitol Visitors Center and the capitol itself, you narrowed it to a fraction of the public. The capitol euld leaves not a morsel of space unused. Its like a little Shopping Center in spots, food courts and banks, and people that work there at a job independent of law making. I want to go to Edward Lawrence on capitol hill or just outside the capitol hill itself . Theres a lot of activity around the capitol, and i did speak to people around senator reids office, and there was a loud speaker announcement just after 9 00 that said shelter in place, lock the doors, and all of the workers in the office in all of the offices on the house and senate side did lock their doors at that point. Those folks, apparently, the lockdown has lifted and another announcement was made saying the lockdown has been lifted and the event is what they are calling it and were looking for somebody on the u. S. Capitol grounds and now it has been lifted and the workers can go back to work and daily activities. Edward lawrence for us on capitol hill. Thank you for that. With the information that the lockdown has been lifted at the Capitol Building, we will get ready to return you to your regular programming and we have views down on the hill, and the Capitol Police will release more information about what happened this morning and we will update you there. We now return you to your regular programming. Announcer todays food brought to you by bushs baked beans. No matter what youre making, we have a bean for you. Weve been all about sup super simple dishes. Melissa clark is here to show us how to create the ultimate lobster roll. I lived in new england for ten years of my life. I love lobster roll. Have you ever made one before . Never actually made one. It sounds complicated. So easy. The only hard part is taking lobster out of the shell. Its jazzing it up with homemade mayonnaise. You can flavor it with dill and herbs and lemon. If you want to make the best lobster roll, just make your mayo homemade. It takes a minute. First dealing with lobster itself. You can buy steamed lobsters. Most places that sell you lobsters will steam it for you. You take it home. You pull it apart. You have the tail right here. Thats good stuff. This is the best part. You take a scissors and cut right through like that. The meat just pulls right out like that. Nice. I see you have its all meat right there. And then if you want to get claws, you can use crackers. If you dont have crackers, the back of a knife. Right in there. Its a little messy but worth it. Thats wh w keep our dresses clean. And this youre going to have to chop. You just pull apart. Pulls apart easy. Make your mayo. I have mustard which is important for mayo because it adds flavor and a little bit of water. Egg yoke. Just a raw egg. This is lemon juice and lemon zest. Lemon zest is key. That adds fresh lovely flavor. Its fantastic with lobster. And then you slowly pour in your oil. Could you mix this by hand . Its noisy. You get the idea. You could mix it by hand. Secret is buttery bun. Yes. For one second were going to switch. If you just add lots of butter to your buns and toast them, you bun . Incredible. So good. I want to point out dill is the other secret ingredient. Its not traditional for lobster rolls. Its so good. Herbs are great with lobster. Add the dill. Thats all. Then we just assemble. Then we assemble and we eat. I cant wait to eat this. Are you guys enjoying . Lobster is so good. You cant underestimate the importance of a buttery bun. Makes the whole thing. Some say butter. Some say mayo. I say buttery bun and mayo. Only reason i dont shove this in my face right now is because of raw egg. You made me without. No raw eggs. Im going to eat this one. You eat that one. Thank you for simple dishes we made this week, head to today. Com food. Youre probably wondering why thaive just carvedng a giant wooden tiger. Well, the answer is that a real one would maul me.
