Narrator from nbc news, this is today with matt lauer and Savannah Guthrie live from studio 1a in rockefeller plaza. Welcome to today. Its a monday morning. Look who is up bright and early . Lester holt. How are you doing . I just came by to welcome you back and they asked me to stick around. Could you please . Everybody works around here. Coming up, our top story, the new firestorm sparked by a tweet from President Trump accusing president obama of tapping his phone at trump tower. This is the claim that the director of the fbi wants the Justice Department to reject as false. Our Political Team is ready to go with complete coverage this morning and we will talk trd President Trumps deputy press secretary. But we start with Peter Alexander. Reporter President Trump accusing president obama 45 accusing 44 of tapping his phones at trump tower which if true would be one of the most scandalous acts in political history. But not only is there no evidence that it ever happened, the head of the fbi wants the Justice Department to publicly refute it. This morning the fbi director is looking to set the president straight. A senior u. S. Official tells nbc news james comey has asked the Justice Department to publicly knock down President Trumps explosive claim that former president obama ordered the wiretapping of mr. Trumps phones during the 2016 election. Comeys argument that is false and needs to be corrected because it implies the fbi broke the law. Late sunday Kellyanne Conway challenged comey to reveal any information he might have. If mr. Comey has something hed like to say, im sure were all willing to hear it. If he knows, of course he can issue a statement. We know not shy. Reporter it comes after President Trump unleashed the highly charged allegation on twitter. A move he compared to mccart mccarthyism, personally attacking mr. Obama as a bad or sick guy, all of it without offering any evidence. President obamas office dismissing the claim as simply false. Still the Trump White House is calling for a congressional investigation to see whether the w Obama Administration abused its power, adding that they will not comment further until such oversight is conducted. Shortly after, a trump spokesperson qualif if this happened, if this is accurate, this is the greatest overreach and greatest abuse of power that i think weve ever seen and huge attack on democracy itself. Reporter richard burr says his committee will follow the evidence will where it leads guided by intelligence athnd facts. But former director of National Intelligence rejected the claim. There was no such wiretap activity mounted against the president elect at the time or as a candidate oirr gns hiagain campaign. Ive never heard that allegation made before, but again, the president put that out there and now the white house will have to answer as to exactly what he was referring to. Reporter democrats going further calling the president s twitter tirade a deliberate effort to deflect attention from russian meddling in the distraction. Reporter this weekends outburst punctuating a tense week. President trump some say was furious that Jeff Sessions recused himself in investigations. An animated discussion appears to be having inside the oval office friday. Still Trump Supporters came out in force in cities across the country this weekend, standing behind the president. One of those rallies turned violence as Trump Supporters were met by protesters near the university of california at berkeley. Atte at least ten were arrested. And there is plenty of speculation about where the president may have gotten the information for the tweets. Mark levine on thursday evening talked about what he called a big scandal raising questions whether the obama separation surveilled members of the Trump Campaign and by friday morning breitbart, the conservative website, picked up on that unsubstantiated allegation and posted its article online. All right. Peter al leshs exandealexander. Sarah sanders is with us. Can we pick up right where peter left off . When i saw these tweets, i thought wow, President Trump must have just gotten some kind of briefing that makes him believe that president obama tapped his phone and weve learned that it was drawn from media accounts. So can you let us know, is that the source of this information, strictly from media reports and not from any other source . The president firmly believes that the Obama Administration may have tapped into the phones at trump tower. And t reports . We need to look into it. The media has been extremely dismissif of this potential story while all the while being happen to jump you on all the false attacks launched against this president. All were asking for is a fair and same look at this potential story and to let the House Intelligence Committee do their job. And you certainly deserve that, but just so were clear on this one specific point, is his information that president obama tapped his phone based solely on something he read in the media, yes or no . Look, i havent had the chance to have the conversation directly with the president and hes a much hire classification than i am. So he may have access to documents that i dont know about. But i come knkcome do know we t seriously and were asking congress do their job. And indeed you are entitledm seriously and were asking congress do their job. And indeed you are entitled to that. And yesterday National Intel against told chuck todd this. If the fbi had a fisa court order, would that be information you would know or not know . Yes. Sglu. You would be told this. I would know this. Something like this, absolutely. And at this point you cant confirm or deny whether that exists . I can ck confirm or deny whether that exists . I can cdeny th is no fisa court order . Not to my knowledge. Sarah, you said the media is dismissive of. They are trying to find out if its true. Director comey also reportedly saying that it isnt true. Are they liaring . Look, all were asking is that the House Intelligence Committee is allowed do their job. Thats what we want them do. Again, when the fbi said that the reports about the president were bs, it was ignored. When the New York Times said that it was reported it was bs, when the House Intelligence Committee said there was no evidence of wrongdoing by the Trump Campaign, the reports kept there is a complete double standard here. All were asking is that the same level of attention be put to this and let the House Intelligence Committee investigate this and see if there is any truth to it. The American People deserve to know if this happened, because if it did, this would be the greatest overreach and greatest abuse of power weve ever seen. What you say is true if about it happened. But some of the press reports that the white house refers back to go back to november. Some were in january. If its such a huge overreach, why not blow the whistle back then . The president says he just found out. You can reckon osoncile that . Its never too late do the right thing. And thats all were looking for. But what you laid out is huge, your word, the great eest overreach. Why a why wouldnt it be reacted to back in november . Was just becoming aware of how this could have happened and the potential threat that this would cause. And due to that, we want to make sure that its thoroughly reviewed and the American People have a right to see if that happened. But in about fairness, that isnt what the president tweeted on saturday. He didnt say if it happened, id like to see it investigated. He said as a fact that his phones were tapped in october and how low has president obama gone to tap my phone. Bad or sick by. Guy. He cant say this is something we should look in, to he said it happened. I think the president firmly believes that it did and all were asking for through the administration is that we get down to the bottom of it and see if it did. Look, again, the media loves to create this false narrative against the current president , but is as to quick to dismiss anything under the past administration. If the president walked across the potomac, the report that he couldnt swim. All were asking is that the same standard be applied to this president as the past president and lets putt the details out there for an American People to make a decision. Were trying to get the details. And we are asking for the investigation so we will have the information available. Sarah huckabee sanders, thank you. Lets bring in ari melber and mark halperin. Part of me wonders if there was a request for fisa fiwiretaps, would that suggest that someone smells smoke . Absolutely. There is only two reasons you would have that. One is someone in the u. S. Talking to an agent of a foreign power or two would be the idea that there was some u. S. Crime committed. Either way that would be bad for the person under surveillance. The interview be chair riritable bizarre. You dont need to ask the congress to go find out what the executive branch obviously knows. And to your point, the premise of your question, savannah, i thought it was very revealing, the fbi, nsa, intelligence agencies are all basically warehouses for the very kind of information that that Deputy White House sect apperetary appo think they cannot is it doesnt have to do whether one is sympathetic to the white house goals. The time line is there may have been some sort of wiretap months ago. As you stated, it is not new. It does not necessarily mean the president was involved in any way. And yet here we are months later getting these kind of attacks for the first time from the president. The current president. If you look at the reports that the white house cites, none stand for the proposition that president obama tapped President Trumps phone some have said that hes trying to deflect. But to what . Because the conversation at large is still about russia, which is not a conversation he wants to be having. He had a successful speech. He doesnt want to be talking about this stuff. If you want to understand it, i think you look at the history of the practice and psychology of the president. He wants to be shown being aggressive and showing strength from his point of view after a week which are tstarted on wels his speech and then having the attorney general recuse himself, feeling like his staff wasnt defending him enough. So you say hes not great at deflection. From his point of view, it shows him on offense. But he needs to stable liz washington and the world again. I think they hope these allegations into away. I think his staff is sorry it happened because it is a distraction. Not so much from russia, but from the thats why hes there, to try to actually pass things. And its a big ahead on that, as we would. Thank you. Another major story out of the white house today, the trmpd administration preparing to unveil a revised travel ban after his first one was met with controversy, confusion and protests. Hallie jackson with the latest for us. Reporter good morning. A new action will comprehend then sufferly protect our countries. Reporter and then a week after that . Its a question of getting it right. Reporter february 23. Six days later, the president was all set to sign the revised order, but on the heels of his joint address to congress, the white house postponed it again. A top Administration Official says this new revised executive order is expected to treat Syrian Refugees the same as refugees from other nations and to remove a blanket ban on iraqi citizens regardless this will almost certainly face legal challenges.
