WPVI Good Morning America June 22, 2024

Day of my life and it really was the best day of his life. The new star taking the tennis world by storm. Not even ranked in the top 100 living out of an rv so he could drive to the tournaments, he took down one of the best players in the world at wimbledon, who is this new king of the court . And then the sun came crashing in good morning, america. And that was an incredible win for dustin brown. But all eyes are on that other big sporting event you might have heard about over the weekend. The world cup final. We celebrate the fourth rooting for team usa at least we better be. Theyre going to go for their first title in 16 years and hoping to exact revenge upon japan after losing to them four years ago in 2011. Much much more on the big game live from vancouver coming up on the show this morning. Cannot wait for that. We begin with that Terror Threat this Holiday Weekend. Law enforcement all across america on high alert worried about possible attacks, especially from socalled lone wolves inspired by isis. Abcs Martha Raddatz is in washington with the latest on this good morning, martha. Reporter good morning, amy. Law enforcement really is in overdrive this morning, command centers set up in major cities special tactical teams already deployed after the unprecedented isis social Media Campaign encouraging supporters to attack wherever they are. And holidays with this much significance are sadly attractive targets and police truly are on edge. That false alarm of a shooting on thursday at the navy yard here in washington prompted a massive response. It is the lone wolf isis inspired terrorist who is most concerning. This year alone, 40 people with suspected ties to isis have been arrested in the u. S. Seven in just the last two weeks and those horrific attacks in france and on tourists in tunisia have heightened concerns overseas. The u. S. Military has now canceled fourth of july celebrations at Lakenheath Air base in england. But this is concerning for anyone heading out to those large holiday festivities over the weekend. What should people keep in mind . Reporter well authorities just want people here at home to be aware of the threat be smart. Be attentive, but celebrate nonetheless, amy. All right, Martha Raddatz, thank you. Dan. Permission to celebrate but 18,000 Law Enforcement agencies across america on alert. Another thing well watch for this weekend, the holiday weather, severe storms lashing parts of the country last night. Reported tornado touching down in tennessee and more storms and flooding in the forecast. Ginger how bad is this going to be . The video youre seeing is lebanon, tennessee, one of the reports of more than 120 in the last hours so that could happen along the same stationary front and now sinks further south and threat this amp and evening. If you have plans to travel or Outdoor Activities from northeast texas through most of arkansas northern alabama, mississippi, georgia, up through southern North Carolina thats where you could see damaging wind. With these storms come flash flooding. Look at this out of edmund oklahoma. Water rescues reported. Parts of oklahoma to tennessee and still have those flood warnings and advisory in southern missouri that expire north to south but a lot of rain possible in the southeast so thats going to be one of the trouble spots. Much more coming up including the whole country, fat july 4th forecast. A lot of people want to know the fireworks forecast. Thank you. To the shark surge. Fear at the beach because of the jump in attacks over the past month, some calling for the beaches in North Carolina to be shut down. Abcs phillip mena is in the outer banks with more. Good morning, phillip. Reporter amy, good morning. Today is the start of the busiest weekend of the year here, the site of the latest shark attack, these attacks are happening off the carolina coast at an alarming rate but why here and why now . This morning, high alert along the east coast. After 11 shark attacks off the shores of the carolinas this year most in just the last three weeks. Its pretty scary. I wouldnt go out there, not now. Reporter experts say the increase in attacks this year could be a combination of four factors. First, drought conditions. Limiting fresh water along the coast, the ocean water is saltier, which sharks like. Throw in warmer water than usual, add a surge of fish for food and factor in more people than usual at the beach and its a recipe for disaster. Sharks are drawn to the warm water. He do like the clear ocean water. But you also have a booming sea turtle population and they love sea turtles. Reporter the attacks so alarming some are calling for beach closures. But North Carolinas governor offering a warning instead. Recognize there are certain areas where were having these bites, so just use your common sense especially if youre in and around a fishing area. Reporter shark encounters havent just been limited to the carolina coast. Take a look at this video from chew on this. This fisherman off the florida coast inadvertently hooking a shark. The shark pulling away so forcefully he not only loses his reel he loses control of his boat capsizing. Then swims for his life scrambling to get away to the main fishing boat. This morning, and throughout the Holiday Weekend, there will be extra beach patrol rangers out here encouraging swimmers to stay close to the shore. Amy. All right, phillip mena thanks for that. Turn now to cecilia vega with the other top developing stories right now starting with a major carmaker in some big trouble. Thats right, good to see you all this Holiday Weekend. This time it is chrysler facing the wrath of the federal government. At a rare hearing regulators promised to hand down massive fines against the automaker for failing to notify Vehicle Owners and regulators about as many as 23 safety recalls and allegedly failing to repair certain defects. The recalls involved millions of vehicles with fuel systems that could catch fire, defective ignition switches and faulty air bags. Chrysler saying it has since improved its safety efforts. And in tennessee this morning, thousands of people have spent a second night evacuated from their homes after a train carrying 24,000 gallons of hazardous chemicals burst into flames releasing toxic fumes, dozens of people sent to the hospital. That fire burning for an entire day before finally being extinguished last night. And new supplies are on the way to the International Space station. A Russian Rocket successfully launched overnight with three tons of cargo including food and fuel. It follows several delivery disasters including last weeks explosion of spacex rocket shortly after liftoff. And new details in the Major League Baseball hacking scandal, the st. Louis cardinals have fired their scouting director the first known case of an employee losing his job since that scandal broke. The fbi is investigating whether the cardinals hacked into the computers of the Houston Astros and whether Team Executives were involved. And heres one from the criminal files. From florida this morning a very unlikely school reunion. A miami judge was overseeing a bond hearing for a burglary suspect when she recognized him as a classmate from middle school. Mr. Booth, i have a question for you. Yes, maam. Did you go to nautilus for middle school . Oh, my goodness. Oh, my goodness. Im sorry to see you there. I always wondered what happened to you, sir. Can you imagine . She goes on to say that he was the nicest kid in school and shes confident he can turn his life around but she still set that bond at 44,000. And finally, so we all know Shaquille Oneal is a complete basketball legend but fans will tell you hes not necessarily the best at shooting free throws of course of course hes on the golf course apparently. Watch what he did at this tournament instead of putting shaq picks up the ball and goes for a free throw bam, of course it goes in. Shaq celebrating with a run around the green saying i hit em when i need em, baby. Whats the rules on that . Is that technically legal . Im going to say yes. When youre 71 you can do what you want. A good thing im not 71 i would be such a jerk. Something having is brewing in the race for the white house. Hillary clinton may have vigorous competition from an unlikely source, this guy, ab scour senator from vermont who has for years selfidentified as a socialist. Bernie sanders is now drawing huge crowds raising big money and climbing in the polls. Heres abcs linsey davis. Oh. Reporter support for Bernie Sanders for president is surging. The turnout of roughly 10,000 at a Campaign Rally earlier this week in wisconsin seemed to surprise even sanders. In case you havent noticed a lot of people are here. Reporter while the 73yearold brooklyn born selfdescribed democratic socialist from vermont has raised 15 million so far, just onethird of the money Hillary Clinton has raised sanders may just give her a run for her money. Tonight, we have more people at a meeting for a candidate for president of the United States than any other candidate has had in 2016. Reporter polls show hes quickly closing the gap in New Hampshire and iowa. The vermont senator is calling for a grassroots Political Revolution to get big money out of politics. So far, he says 99 of his contributions have come from individuals giving 250 or less. Bernie sanders is shaping up to be the antihillary right now. There is a big element of the Democratic Party that wants an alternative. Reporter many of his supporters tout him as the honest and authentic candidate. Hillary needs to consult with her focus group and get back to you in a couple of weeks. Its about time that someone actually stood that we know is on our side. Reporter just for perspective when president obama was running for his first term as president almost three months into his candidacy he had 100,000 donors. Sanders just two months in has 250,000, so just a few weeks ago he seemed like a long shot. He still may be but there is a Sanders Movement right now. Interesting story. Linsey, thank you so much. Now to a shocking incident caught on camera at a mall in georgia. Three security guards beating up a teenager punching him and throwing him to the ground. Those guards have been suspended but the boys mother is demanding they be arrested. Abcs Steve Osunsami has the story. Reporter this is the cell phone video burning up the internet this morning and has led to the suspensions of these three security guards seen here repeatedly punching a shirtless 15yearold outside a mall south of atlanta. Witnesses say the guards were trying to get a group of underage kids to leave. Mall policy says you have to be 18 to remain on the property without a parent. But the girl who shot the video whos avoiding cameras told police one of the guards swung first. 45yearold shavella hamm is the boys mother. I was horrified. I was scared. Reporter she and her new lawyer are furious. I was at another store at the mall. Across the street. Across the street from the mall and i got a phone call and it was my son. Hysterical. Screaming. Ma come help me. Reporter they went to Court Thursday and filed these documents demanding that Police Arrest the security guards for battery and visible harm and were granted a hearing next month where they plan to show a judge the video. They should not be allowed to continue working as Security Officers but even more importantly, they should be arrested and prosecuted as criminals. Reporter in a statement the mall says the guards worked to are a Third Party Company and no matter what happens, will no longer work on site. What those three men did, this whole situation could have turned out even worse. When my baby came home. Reporter for Good Morning America, Steve Osunsami, abc news, atlanta. Steve, thank you. Now to a surprising and very public corporate apology. The heads of a popular highend Supermarket Chain whole foods coming out and saying they are sorry. The company was accused of overcharging customers for prepackaged foods, sometimes as much as 15. Heres abcs rebecca jarvis. Reporter this morning, a rare mea culpa. The ceos of one of the largest Grocery Store chains in the country speaking directly to consumers apologizing. Straight up we made some mistakes. We want to own that. Reporter responding to that Consumer Affairs investigation which accused eight whole foods locations in new york of repeatedly overcharging customers for prepackaged foods. Mislabeling weights resulting in errors like these. A package of chicken tenders, 5 more than it should be. This vegetable platter, 6 more. The ceos calling the errors completely unintentionally. We know theyre unintentional because the mistakes are in the customers favor and sometimes not in the customers favor. Reporter not the first time theyve been accused of overcharging. Recently following an undercover inspector on unannounced Grocery Store visits finding numerous cases where customers were overcharged at multiple Grocery Store chains across the city. 5 cents, 20 cent a dollar here happening week in and week out. Reporter how do you know if its the real deal in your cart . Weigh it. This says that its a pound and you can check right here. To make sure that it is. Whole foods says it plans to increase training and bring in an outside auditor. If theres a mistake thats not in your favor, we promise to give you that item for free. If there is any question about any item in your shopping cart whole foods is urging you to bring that item up to one of its managers and, again, if there is a mistake, if the label says the wrong thing and its more than what it should be they promise to give you that item for free and these days this is so prevalent at so many different grocery chains it really does pay to look in your cart. See whats there. I do our shopping at whole foods. And i try to get through there in less than 30 seconds so now i have to like weigh everything as i go through . Yeah, exactly. All right. Thank you for adding to my to do list appreciate that. Any time. My wife thanks you, as well rebecca. Team usa, were all hoping to celebrate the Holiday Weekend with a world cup gold.
