Charlie Chaplin (Reino Unido, 1889-Suize, 1977) es una figura legendaria del cine cuyo personaje, Charlot, se ha convertido en un icono. Tras una infancia en Londres digna de los relatos de Dickens, y las primeras actuaciones teatrales, Chaplin se mudó a Hollywood, donde logró expresar su talento y confirmarse como un maestro indiscutible de la época dorada del género cómico. Sus películas más conocidas —*Luces de la ciudad* (1931), *Tiempos modernos* (1936) y *El gran dictador* (1940)— son una combinación de comedia y crítica política y social. Con la llegada del sonoro, Chaplin abandonó sus pantalones anchos, el bastón, los zapatones y el bombín para realizar ambiciosas obras dramáticas. Pero durante la Guerra Fría, su estilo de vida poco convencional y su presunta orientación izquierdista le obligaron a bandonar Estados Unidos. Sus últimas películas realizadas en Europa —*Monsieur Verdoux* (1947) y *Candilejas* (1952)— siguen considerándose obras maestras a pesar de que no obtuvieron el gran éxito de obras precedentes.
