Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala could be as close as possible to creating history as it goes to the polls on April 6 – returning a government back to power for the first time in four decades. But the five-year itch is so strong even now in this last foothold of the two major Communist parties that it could well be a case of the proverbial slip between the cup and lip. The ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) in Kerala, led by the Communist Party of India (Marxist), is pushing hard for victory touting its widely acknowledged achievements in improving the state’s public healthcare and school education infrastructure and its potent use of a well-established public distribution system (PDS) to reach timely succour for the pandemic-hit population in the form of liberally-packed food kits.

Inaugurating the Youth Summit on Future Kerala organised by the AKG Centre for Research and Studies here on Sunday, Mr. Vijayan said that Left governments had contributed immensely towards the State’s development, despite having been in power less times than Congress-led coalitions.

The event being conducted on the theme ‘Knowledge society and a blueprint for future Kerala’ will feature presentations by young scholars, students, other academic practitioners, IT professionals, young entrepreneurs, and others from arts, literature, culture, and sports. According to reception committee chairman and State Planning Board member K.N. Harilal, general convener V. Sivadasan and convener Shafeeque Vadakkan, plenary sessions on education, health, labour force, development, and culture will also be held as part of the summit.
