Monday morning fireball was a comet fragment burning up in Earth's atmosphere

Monday morning fireball was a comet fragment burning up in Earth’s atmosphere
Western Canadians caught a glimpse of a bright flash overhead this week as a fireball lit up the sky on Monday morning. Now, University of Alberta researchers have used Western Canada’s most advanced fireball network to capture images and trajectory of the fireball revealing it to be a small piece of a comet that burned up in the atmosphere.
“Using two observation sites, we were able to calculate both its trajectory and velocity, which tell us about the origin of the meteor and reveal that it was a piece of a comet,” said Patrick Hill, post-doctoral fellow in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences. “This chunk was largely made of dust and ice, burning up immediately without leaving anything to find on the ground but instead giving us a spectacular flash.” ....

Asteroid Twice As Big As Empire State Building to Fly Past Earth Next Week

Asteroid Twice As Big As Empire State Building to Fly Past Earth Next Week
On 2/23/21 at 8:38 AM EST
An asteroid that could be up to two times as wide as the height of the Empire State Building is going to fly past Earth next week but our planet will be spared a collision.
The asteroid, known as 1999 RM45, is going to pass within just 1.8 million miles of Earth at around 7:52pm UTC on Tuesday March 2, according to NASA s Center for Near Earth Studies (CNEOS).
On an astronomical scale, this distance is tiny. In astronomical units (au) a measure of distance astronomers use for mapping celestial objects it is just under 0.02. The Sun is roughly 1 au away. ....

Asteroid alert: A 'stadium sized' space rock is hurtling towards Earth

Story highlights
Asteroids may be small compared to size of the Earth but they can cause massive destruction owing to their very high speeds
It may be just another day for us here on Earth. We may get up and go about as if nothing is going to happen. But ask those Dinosaurs who were out on the day an asteroid struck Earth.
Well, you can t of course because all of them are dead (along with around 75 per cent of life at that time on the planet).
This is what happens when a huge space rock decides that it is tired of travelling through space and wants to settle down on the cosy planet we call Earth. ....

Asteroid 2-times size of Big Ben to pass Earth- NASA tracking 'potentially hazardous' rock

Experts revealed 2020 XU6 will zoom by at more than 10 times the distance between the Earth and the Moon.
The distance between our planet and its lunar satellite - known as a lunar distance (LD) - stands at more than 380,000 kilometres.
Asteroid 2020 XU6 will pass Earth at 10.7 LDs. According to NASA, that is still a close enough distance for the asteroid to be considered a near Earth object (NEO).
The definition of a NEO in astronomical terms is any small solar system body which comes within 1.3 astronomical units (AU) of the Earth.
