Sekunjalo Independent Media Consortium has busted the myth that the purchase of Independent Media, the biggest media group in the country, from the Irish for R2 billion was only through funding from the Public Investment Corporation (PIC).
The company appeared before the Standing Committee on Finance (SCoF) on Wednesday to detail the facts of how its umbrella body, Sekunjalo Group, actually sealed a deal with the Irish media company, which was the owner of Independent Media in South Africa at the time.
Independent Media’s delegation included Sekunjalo’s executive chairman, Dr Iqbal Survé, chief operating officer Takudzwa Hove, editor-in-chief Aneez Salie, editor of The Star, Sifiso Mahlangu, and Daily News editor Ayanda Mdluli. ....

Cape Town - Former members of the press council working with a minister and two former ministers are alleged to be the hands behind a recent move by the SA National Editors Forum (SANEF) in attempting to force the Public Investment Corporation (PIC) to execute a hostile takeover of Independent Media.
The Independent Media Investigations Unit can reveal that the current minister and former ministers did not involve just the PIC, but are also working with two banks in a last-ditch effort to shut down the accounts of the Sekunjalo Group, a shareholder of Independent Media â a move expected to render Independent Media unable to trade or operate. ....

President Cyril Ramaphosa has expressed his support for a state bank, indicating that a number of other developing countries have these institutions in place.
Speaking to journalists as part of a SA National Editors Forum meeting on Friday (26 February), Ramaphosa said that the country’s banking sector is controlled by just a few banks and South Africans need more options in terms of accessing loans,
“I fully support the establishment of a state bank at an organisational and state level. There is space for a state bank. The Land Bank is a state bank. The IDC (Industrial Development Corporation), if you like, is a state bank. Many developing countries have a number of state banks.” ....

It is regrettable that TV personality Somizi Mhlongo-Motaung has refused to apologise for his appalling conduct against two journalists.
The SA National Editors Forum had called on Mhlongo-Motaung to “unreservedly apologise to these journalists and the public on all his social platforms for his unbecoming behaviour”. This was after he insulted the reporters and released their contact details online for them to be abused by his fans.
