Puducherry, May 4 (IANS) The Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) has said it has hiked the number of beds from 229 to 400 for Covid patients and plans to add another 75 beds due to the spike in the number of cases in the Union Territory.

Suvrankar Datta, a Covid-positive doctor isolated in his room in a Delhi apartment, hopes his infection remains mild as he is unsure he will get a bed easily even at the hospital where he works the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi.
The institute, where Datta is pursuing postgraduate studies in radio-diagnosis, was on Sunday night bursting with patients, occupying almost all its beds and its emergency department where over 24 patients were on critical care support and more than 100 were on “oxygen points”.
As India’s second Covid-19 wave continues to surge with more than 349,000 new patients recorded nationwide on Sunday morning, doctors say hospital beds, oxygen and even some medicines are in short supply in the hardest-hit locations. ....

Chennai, April 26 : The Jawaharlal Institute of PostGraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) director, Dr Rakesh Aggarwal, has in a statement denied that the institute conducted surgery on the wrong leg of a patient as alleged by some of his relatives.
The director, in a statement said that an accident victim was admitted to JIPMER on April 20 and he was evaluated and operated upon by a team of orthopaedic and cardiovascular surgeons to repair bone fracture and injury to the main artery of one of the legs. ....
