The overall teledensity in India increased from 86.38 percent at the end of December 2020 to 87.01 percent at the end of January 2021, according to the latest telecom subscription data released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI).
The urban teledensity increased from 138.34 percent at the end of December 2020 to 139.25 percent at the end of January 2021, and rural teledensity also increased from 59.05 percent to 59.50 percent during the same period. ....

OTP communication for payment transactions resumes, no complaints filed

After a week’s pause, communication of One Time Passwords (OTP) through short messaging for payment transactions resumed smoothly.
Last week, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) had put on hold the implementation of its regulations to curb unsolicited commercial communication. The regulator gave banks and other service providers one week to adhere to the regulations after customers across the country failed to receive text messages and OTPs. A senior Indian Banks’ Association executive said things began smoothly after a one-week standstill. Members have not given negative feedback.
On Wednesday, none of the banks faced any major issue, said a person aware of the matter, belonging to a payment gateway firm. Major private sector lenders also said they are not experiencing any outages with respect to payments and the operations are running smoothly. ....

New Delhi [India], March 17 (ANI): The number of broadband subscribers increased from 74.74 crore in December-end to 75.76 crore in January-end, marking a growth rate of 1.36 per cent, Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) said on Wednesday.
The top five service providers constituted 98.84 per cent market share They are Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd (41.29 crore), Bharti Airtel (18.46 crore), Vodafone Idea (12.27 crore), BSNL (2.66 crore) and Atria Convergence (18 lakh).
TRAI said the number of telephone subscribers increased from 117.38 crore at end of December 2020 to 118.34 crore at end of January 2021. ....

In a meeting with the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) officials on Wednesday, Confederation of All India Traders (CAIT) and the Retailers Association of India (RAI) and others also sought clearly laid out penalties for those who violate the laws.
The TRAI has sought level playing field among all formats and channels of Business to Consumer (B2C) retail insisting that the rules for products should be same for all channels without any special rules or dispensation for any channel.
Domestic retailer associations have sought a regulator like the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, and the Securities and Exchange Board of India for the e-commerce sector and pushed for a stronger version of the Press Note 2 of 2018 which stipulates that the inventory of a vendor will be deemed to be controlled by the marketplace if more than 25% of the vendor’s ....
