Rural Karnataka records dip of 50% in child marriages in 15 years: Govt survey

The percentage of child marriages in Karnataka has fallen from 50.1% in 2005-06 to 24.7% in 2019-20, according to the National Family Health Survey- 5 data.

Key Highlights
In urban areas of the state, the percentage of women, who were married before the legal age, has reduced from 28.5% in 2005-06 to 21.3% in 2020-19.
Experts attributed the decline in underage marriages to the enactment of the Prohibition of Child Marriages Act, 2006, awareness campaigns, complaint mechanisms like children’s helplines, etc.

New Delhi: COVID-19 cases in India are steadily coming down while the caseload of infection in many parts of the world is experiencing a second or even a third peak, Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said on Thursday asserting the government “recognised the threat early and pursued a scientific evidence-based approach”.

Among 17 states and five UTs included in NFHS- 5 (2019-20), Karnataka holds the first position in cases of spousal violence against women.

Key Highlights
Over 30 per cent of women in Karnataka, Manipur, Bihar, Assam, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh have experienced spousal violence.
Since 2015-16, cases spousal violence against women have increased in Karnataka, Assam and West Bengal.
In Manipur, such cases have dropped from 52.3 per cent in 2015-16 to 39.6 per cent in 2019-20.
Bengaluru: The National Family Health Survey- 5 (2019-20) data has revealed that 44 per cent of women, aged between 18 and 49 years, surveyed in Karnataka have experienced spousal violence (physical and/or sexual) in their lifetime. With this percentage, Karnataka topped the list of 17 states and five UT ....

New Delhi [India], December 15 (ANI): As many as 5,000 nurses here at All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) went on an indefinite strike on Monday over their long-pending demands, including those with regard to the Sixth Central Pay Commission and against contractual appointments.
AIIMS Director Dr Randeep Guleria appealed to the nurses to call off their strike and return to work, stating that a real nurse will really never abandon her patients . ....
