The University of Cape Town (UCT) said all students on its main campus were being evacuated by emergency services support staff on Sunday as a runaway wildfire spread onto the campus grounds.
In a statement, after the outbreak of a fire at 8.45am which gutted a section of the Rhodes Memorial restaurant, UCT said students were taken to predetermined locations.
UCT spokesperson Elijah Moholola said reports that the university was evacuating hydrogen tanks from its science labs could not be confirmed.
PLEASE NOTE: All UCT students have been evacuated from campus by emergency services support staff. We have taken them to pre-determined locations. Education sector pushes for return to in-person teaching
Flandersnews.be  18 April 2021
Flemish Education Minister Ben Weyts (nationalist) and representatives of the Flemish universities and schools of advanced learning are backing plans for a return to face-to-face teaching in Flemish higher education. The consultative committee representing Belgium’s governments that has the final say on coronavirus measures was expected to back the plans, writes Colin Clapson for

The goal is to give students two half days or one full day of on-campus education from 19 April onwards. For over a year Flanders’ 270,000 students have been in one of the strictest coronavirus regimes. Education Minister Weyts and the higher education sector now want to return to the situation that existed before the Easter break. ....

Can virtual external quality assurance work for HE?

Can virtual external quality assurance work for HE?
The COVID-19 pandemic caught everyone by surprise. Almost all ongoing quality assurance reviews involving campus visits were put on hold and-or deferred. After the initial few months, external quality assurance agencies (EQAAs) had to make decisions.
Soon, despite some uneasiness about the loss of universally mandatory physical site visits, EQAAs switched to virtual accreditations to continue with their service.
The experiment was surprisingly well received and there is now interest in incorporating these lessons into future plans, as part of a long-awaited digital transformation.
The National Accreditation Agency for Higher Education in Indonesia (BAN-PT) is one such agency. It cyclically accredits about 28,000 academic programmes and 4,700 institutions. To manage the huge volume, it had digitalised all aspects of the accreditation process except the on-site review visit. ....

University rugby team responds to All Blacks haka furore

University rugby team responds to All Blacks haka furore
NZ Herald.
Walter Sisulu University (WSU), nicknamed the All Blacks, performed their rendition of the All Blacks’ haka Kapa O Pango in the opening match of the Varsity Shield against the Durban University of Technology, with the video since going viral and sparking outrage online. Many fans on social media accused the team of cultural appropriation, saying that the haka belongs to New Zealand and Maori culture. Some even called the WSU’s version of the haka “disrespectful” and “an insult to Maori people of NZ”.
Following the backlash, WSU Captain Litha Nkula explained that use of the haka stems from an admiration of the All Blacks’ brand of rugby. “The players wanted to bring in the haka because they admired the way the All Blacks play … It has become part of our culture. We explain to new players that come in why it is done and how it influences us as a team. That’s why we feel that we can’ ....
