Another eagle rescued in Sarangani
A PHILIPPINE Eagle was rescued last week in the hinterlands of Maitum, Sarangani after a resident found it trapped in thorny rattan vines while on a hunt. It was the third eagle rescued in the area over the last four years, according to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources–Soccsksargen (DENR-12) regional office. The eagle has been turned over the Philippine Eagle Center in Davao City for documentation and rehabilitation. The bird was found near Mt. Busa, a declared key biodiversity.

It was in 1965 when Dioscoro Rabor, also known as the Father of Philippine Wildlife Conservation, alerted the public about the Philippine eagle s
(Pithecophaga jefferyi) endangered status, which started the race to save the bird from extinction. Illegal hunting and continued denudation of Philippine forests contribute to the dwindling numbers of this majestic bird.
Rabor called for a conference with the International Union for Conservation of Nature in Thailand. The country’s pandemic lockdown, among the longest and strictest in the world, curtailed field expeditions in the southern Mindanao region, impacting the conservation of the critically endangered Philippine eagles (Phitecopaga jefferyi).
Despite the limitations, Philippine eagle conservationists and their partner agencies rescued seven eagles and sighted two new eagle families.
Conservationists note that more eagles have been seen in the wild in Mindanao, among the last remaining bastions of the species, which means that conservation drives to educate communities are working.
While 2020 was a productive year for eagle conservation, the pandemic crippled the steady stream of revenue coming from tourists visiting the Philippine Eagle Center in Davao City. ....

The first Philippine eagle bred in captivity in an effort to save one of the world s most endangered birds has died from infections, conservationists said Friday.
The raptor named Pag-asa or Hope was hatched in 1992 at a sanctuary run by the Philippine Eagle Foundation on the outskirts of the southern city of Davao.
Pag-asa would have turned 29 next week.
