More than 2ha of prime Napier hills real estate vacant for 18 years and once targeted for a 61-unit residential development is now set to become the site of two family homes.
The site is
the 2.2ha 46-50 Napier Tce former home of Hukarere Girls College, which has expansive views over the city of Napier and Marine Pde towards Cape Kidnappers.
Vacated by the school in 2003 amid a move to a property once a Department of Social Welfare boys home near Eskdale, the historic buildings were demolished and the site bought by investors planning the residential development, which was to have been known as Hukarere Heights. ....

Urban sprawl looks set to eat up to 31,270ha of Auckland s most productive land over the next 35 years.
And, according to figures included in a recent Environment Court decision, the irreversible, cumulative loss of Auckland s prime horticultural land is accelerating.
A group of farmers and landowners had sought to overturn an Auckland Council decision rejecting their proposal to expand the Rural Urban Boundary and the Future Urban Zone across more than 83ha of land near Auckland Airport. But last month the Environment Court rejected the landowners plans to rezone the land. ....

Uttarakhand glacier burst: Tapovan dam completely washed off, says IAF

Tapovan Hydro-Electric Power Dam, also known as Rishi Ganga Project was completely washed off following a glacier burst in the Chamoli district, said the Indian Air Force s initial report as Advanced Light Helicopter (ALH) deployed at Joshimath has undertaken recce of affected areas.
The dam is called Tapovan Hydro-Electric Power Dam. It is on the confluence of Dhauli Ganga and Rishi Ganga. As per the recce Tapovan dam also called Rishi Ganga Project has been completely washed off, said the report.
It said that two bridges at the entrance of Malari valley and near Tapovan are also washed away, while the main road between Joshimath to Tapovan is intact. ....

Netherlands suspends international adoptions with immediate effect

The Netherlands have announced that they are suspending all adoptions from abroad with immediate effect, after an official inquiry found many abuses.
The Netherlands is suspending international adoptions after a government commission found that some children had been stolen or purchased from their birth parents, Legal Protection Minister Sander Dekker announced on Monday.
An investigative commission has found that some children from Bangladesh, Brazil, Colombia, Indonesia and Sri Lanka were taken from their parents. The commission reports that officials knew of the abuse since the 1960s.
The commission was set up under pressure from increasing numbers of grown-up adopted children who began to research their roots and often found that their birth documents had been forged or lost, or that their adoption had been illegal. ....
