Huge crowd at Mumbai's Dadar market despite massive spike in Covid-19 cases

Despite the surge in COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra, a massive crowd was seen at the Dadar vegetable market in Mumbai on Monday morning.
The people in the market were seen flouting social distancing norms and many were seen without a proper mask.
Mumbai reported 11,163 new COVID-19 cases and 25 deaths on Sunday. In order to control the new infections, the State government has imposed Section 144 of CrPC between 7 am and 8 pm, banning the gathering of more than five people at a place.
Meanwhile, Maharashtra reported 57,074 new COVID-19 cases, 27,508 recoveries, 222 deaths on Sunday, as per the State Health Department. The total active cases in the state rose to 30,10,597. The death toll mounted to 55,878 including the new deaths. ....

Bombay HC asks CBI to probe Param Bir Singh's allegations against Deshmukh

The Bombay High Court on Monday
directed the CBI to conduct a preliminary inquiry within 15 days into allegations of corruption and misconduct made by former Mumbai police chief Param Bir Singh against Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh.
A division bench of Chief Justice Dipankar Datta and Justice Girish Kulkarni said this was an extraordinary and unprecedented case that warranted an independent inquiry.
It directed the Central Bureau of Investigation s (CBI) director to complete the preliminary inquiry within 15 days and then take a decision on further course of action.
The bench was presiding over three public interest litigations, including one filed by Singh himself, another by city-based lawyer Jayshree Patil, and the third by teacher Mohan Bhide, seeking various reliefs. ....

Power stocks spurt

Power stocks were trading in green, with the S&P BSE Power index increasing 17.45 points or 0.69% at 2561.15 at 09:49 IST.
Among the components of the S&P BSE Power index, Adani Transmission Ltd (up 5.52%), Adani Power Ltd (up 4.98%), Adani Green Energy Ltd (up 2.98%), and Thermax Ltd (up 0.14%), were the top gainers.
On the other hand, Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (down 1.57%), NTPC Ltd (down 0.97%), and Torrent Power Ltd (down 0.97%) turned lower.
At 09:49 IST, the S&P BSE Sensex was down 401.76 or 0.8% at 49628.07.
The Nifty 50 index was down 105.1 points or 0.71% at 14762.25.
The S&P BSE Small-Cap index was down 37.34 points or 0.18% at 21034.35.
The S&P BSE 150 Midcap Index index was down 31.89 points or 0.46% at 6954.22. ....

Gujarat: No hike in power tariff for consumers of state discoms

In a relief to people in
Gujarat, the state Electricity Regulatory Commission (GERC) has announced that power tariffs will not be hiked for the consumers of the state-owned discoms and Torrent Power Ltd (Surat area), a release said on Monday.
Torrent Power caters to the consumers of Ahmedabad, Gandhinagar and Surat city area.
State-owned Discoms include UGVCL, PGVCL, DGVCL and MGVCL.
Since the model code of conduct is in force for the upcoming elections to the Gandhinagar Municipal Corporation, the GERC has not passed any tariff orders for the UGVCL and the Torrent Power Limited (Ahmedabad- Gandhinagar areas).
The tariff orders for these areas will be declared after the completion of the poll next month, said a release by the GERC on Monday. ....

Covid bed count increased at several Delhi government hospitals

Amid a massive surge in COVID-19 cases in the national capital, the Delhi government on Monday issued an order to augment the number of beds reserved for coronavirus patients at its several hospitals.
The national capital recorded 3,548 fresh cases of COVID-19 on Monday, while 15more people succumbed to the infection taking the death toll to 11,096, according to the Delhi health department.
The Delhi government s order stated that in view of the increase in COVID-19 cases in the city, it has been decided to designate an increased number of beds in these hospitals for admitting confirmed or suspected cases of coronavirus infection. ....
