Quest for autonomy in Bayelsa oil-producing community sparks controversy

The recognition of Ayakiri autonomous community by the Bayelsa State government has sparked off controversy as the Ibenanaowei of Gbarain Kingdom, King Funpere Akah w1and the council of chiefs and elders of Ogboloma Community in Yenagoa Local Government Council have kicked against the development.
The Gbarain Kingdom monarch has petitioned the Ministry of Community Development Affairs which issued the certificate of recognition, stating that the authority to issue such recognition lies solely within his jurisdiction and not the ministry.
Speaking to Nigerian Tribune, spokesperson for Ayakiri community, Chief Bruce Duba, said the last straw that broke the camel back was a statement made by the paramount ruler of Ogboloma, Chief Faithful Tebepina, on September 1, 2020 that Ogboloma has four compounds or families alone, and that Igbeinbiri, the father of Ayakiri was not among them as they were only strangers. ....

Indigenes of Jebba, Shao and other Yoruba communities in the Moro Local Government Area of Kwara State have condemned alleged marginalisation in the Ilorin Emirate system.
Speaking at the second Saka Adeyemi memorial lecture organised by a sociocultural organisation, Millennium Initiatives on Societal Values (MISSAVS) in Shao, the people said their traditional stools are being relegated in what they describe as the Ilorin Fulani feudalist-oligarchy setting.
It was gathered that the late Saka Adeyemi was one of the arrowheads of Moro Redemption Movement (MRM).
The lecture, entitled, ‘Rape and nationhood: salvaging the fate of Moro and other raped victims’, they urged that something urgent should be done to halt the situation. ....

Lawmaker moves to reconcile two warring Ogoni communities

The lawmaker representing Khana/Gokana federal constituency in the House of Representatives, Honourable Dumnamene Robinson Dekor, has visited the feuding communities of Ogoniland; Luu-Sue and Zor-Sogho where he appealed for calm between members of the communities.
His move was based on claims and counterclaims of ‘unprovoked’ attacks against each other, the hostility between both communities in Khana Local Government Area, Rivers State, which escalated on the night of Wednesday, February 3, with an alleged killing of five persons and destruction of properties worth several millions of naira.
The incident had left the areas deserted prompting the federal legislator to move in swiftly to forestall the situation degenerating into full scale communal war. ....

Road map for alternative school programme underway —FG

The Federal Government has revealed that a road map is being developed on Alternate School Programme as part of concerted effort to reduce the menace of out-of-school children in the country estimated to be over 10.2 million.
The National Steering Committee on the programme held its inaugural meeting in Abuja to map out strategies and an action plan to address the challenges of out-of-school children in Nigeria and to rapidly reduce the number by providing them with quality basic education and skills in special settings not addressed in the conventional school system.
In her opening remarks, the co-chairperson, convener of the meeting and Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Sadiya Umar Farooq, said that Nigeria topped the list of out-of-school children in the world, hence the decision of the Federal Government to develop strategic plans by the recently inaugurated steering committee. ....
