High Point: Child with kidney cancer surprised with playground

Updated: 6:52 PM EDT May 1, 2021
Volunteers with two organizations came together Saturday to build a playground as a surprise for a nearly 2-year-old boy with kidney cancer.Mickey Truck Bodies and Roc Solid Foundation worked together to build a new swing set in Luca's backyard as a way to bring him smiles as he goes through his treatments. The High Point family found out their son had a Wilm's tumor when his doctor felt a lump during a normal checkup. They then found out the result at Brenner Children's Hospital.Roc Solid Foundation is a nonprofit that "builds hope for kids fighting cancer." They're best known for donating ready bags to hospitals filled with things people may need when coming for unexpected hospital visits. They also build playsets for children who are going through treatments. The group joined up with local nonprofit Mickey Truck Bodies to build Luca's play set when he wasn't home and surprised him. Tears flowed as Luca's smile grew wide and he climbed all over his new outdoor haven, forgetting for a few moments about the trials that lay ahead and getting to be a kid again."He is so resilient," said Jamie Teoli, Luca's mom. "He can't even vocalize, complain or vocalize what he is going through. He always loves to have a smile on his face and loves to play and keep up with his big brother. And it gives me hope and courage to get through the day. Like, if he can be good, then I can be good."To learn more about Roc Solid Foundations, donate or volunteer, click here.
