Growing up in Hāwera in the 1950s offered Philip Holmes paltry cultural experiences. But it also was a source of inspiration for his lengthy, prolific and successful professional art career.
From the age of 6,
he knew he wanted to be an artist and he drew constantly. He would search for paintings, drawings and sculptures in his home town.

New Zealand film 'Cousins' empowers wāhine Māori

A leading actor in the new film Cousins says the screenplay highlights the cruel treatment inflicted on wāhine Māori in the 1940s and 1950s.
Hariata Moriarty plays the young-adult version of the character Missy in the film and says it was a great experience working on the film. And although some of the subject matter was challenging, it gave her a sense of empowerment as a young Māori woman.
"He mahi mīharo, he mahi ngāhau. Ahakoa ka peka pouri wētahi wā taumaha, he mahi ngāhau."

Full of receipts, business cards, ticket stubs, photographs, and even a wedding planner, an old filing box served as a carrier of Nee Heather Handy's memories for a good 60 years.
"You can see that it's been packed from so long ago. I don't know how many places she's totted this from but here we are, years later," her daughter, Corinne Knight told blogTO.
"Honestly if I had come across this when she was alive, I would've made fun of her and told her to get rid of all this stuff. Now that she's passed away and to see how important it was for her at that time, it's lovely."

John Henderson has seen plenty of goaltending in the 65 years since his final NHL game. Today, at age 87 the Boston Bruins' oldest living goalie, he considers the current crop and says he likes Jakob Markstrom of the Calgary Flames best of all.
It doesn't hurt that before signing with the Flames as a free agent Oct. 9, Markstrom played the previous five seasons for the Vancouver Canucks, who play their home games a little over 30 miles from Henderson's home in White Rock, British Columbia.

On this day, the birthday of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., let’s remember the influence of immigration restriction on the effectiveness of the movement that he epitomizes.
At the 1963 March on Washington that included King’s iconic “I have a dream” speech, the lead organizer and head of the event was A. Philip Randolph, one of the greatest civil rights leaders of the 20th century. The president of the Sleeping Car Porters union had a long history of advocating for immigration restrictions as part of his five decades of advancing Black economic interests.

During the last few years, I've been restoring film cameras of the 1890s through 1960s and using them to shoot the machinery at races and car graveyards. My favorite tools for this have been ancient box cameras from the early 20th century, and I've obtained some nice photos with these cameras at old-time junkyards in northeastern Colorado. Two photographs and a business card regarding Monmouth, Kansas. Monmouth was the third town laid out in Crawford County and is located six miles west of the town of Cherokee. The post office was established in 1866. The town continues to exist as a small unincorporated community. Photographs include images of mining equipment and the business card of Bobby J. Richardson, an evangelist coming to the Church of Christ in Monmouth.
