1.7 billion shares of a.i.g. common stock, that's a 92% stake in the company treasury also now holds $20 billion in a.i.g. assets that a.i.g. is selling to repay the taxpayers so the current taxpayer investment in a.i.g. is about 6 billion. shep. >> shepard: bottom line, do we make a profit out of this thing, us taxpayers? >> we have to look at the stock here. that $48 billion or so converted to common stock. treasury has to sell those shares 2 dollars a share to break even. in trading today a.i.g. closed at $55 a share. if treasury tried to sell all of its 1.7 billion new shares at once, it would obviously flood the market. the stock would tank. and maybe go to below $29 a share. so, treasury plans to sell these shares gradually over time. a.i.g.'s ceo is confident that the company is turning around and that based on fundamentals, the demand for the stock will be high enough over time to repay
