Bhubaneshwar: Over the past three to four days, a large number of people have been lining up outside the regional office of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in Bhubaneswar to swap Rs 2,000 notes, Indian Express reported.
The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said in a circular on Wednesday that it has received over 97 per cent of Rs 2,000 notes, however, notes worth Rs 10,000 crore are still with public. This year in May, the bank had officially announced the withdrawal of Rs 2,000 notes.
People are requested to avail the facility of sending Rs 2,000 banknotes through post offices of India Post, the RBI said, adding that this will obviate the need for travel to RBI offices for deposit or exchange of the currency.
RBI has also clarified that Rs 2,000 notes will continue to be accepted at banks and other financial institutions for deposit into bank accounts till October 7
Reserve Bank Governor Shaktikanta Das announced that 87% of the Rs 2,000 denomination notes being withdrawn have been returned as bank deposits, while the rest has been exchanged. He also stated that Rs 12,000 crore worth of Rs 2,000 notes are yet to come back. The RBI is focusing on the 4% inflation target and will maintain an actively disinflationary monetary policy until inflation decreases. The RBI flagged the issue of personal loans and urged banks to take steps to prevent any risk build-up. Gross non-performing assets have improved in the June quarter.
