A former Japanese Olympian says the country has been “cornered” into holding the Olympics this summer.
“We have been cornered into a situation where we cannot even stop now. We are damned if we do, and damned if we do not,” Kaori  Yamaguchi, a member of the executive board for the Japanese Olympic Committee and bronze medalist during the 1988 Olympics, said in an editorial published by Kyodo news agency, the Associated Press reported.
“The IOC also seems to think that public opinion in Japan is not important,” Yamaguchi added.

Polls have shown that the majority of Japanese citizens are not in favor of hosting the Olympics as the country has to keep extending its state of emergency in many areas due to the coronavirus.

Japan is extending its state of emergency to another prefecture and approving two new coronavirus vaccines as it continues its fight against the virus ahead of hosting the Olympics.
The state of emergency was extended to the island of Okinawa, making it one of nine prefectures to be under a state of emergency in Japan, Reuters reported.
The country also approved two new vaccines, Moderna and AstraZeneca, amid a slow vaccination rollout in the country.

A petition calling for the cancellation of the Olympics has garnered more than 350,000 signatures and has been submitted to Olympics officials.
The petition has more than 356,000 signatures after nine days and has been sent to the chiefs of the Olympic and Paralympic committees along with Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike, Reuters reported.
Kenji Utsunomiya, who ran for governor of Tokyo multiple times, started the petition because he believes the coronavirus is not under control enough in Japan for the country to host the games.
