U.S. Fresh Potatoes to Mexico Pt 3 - AG INFORMATION NETWORK OF THE WEST

U.S. Fresh Potatoes to Mexico Pt 3
Wednesday Feb 24th, 2021
I’m Bob Larson. A vote today by the Mexico Supreme Court could overturn a ban on U.S fresh potato imports with our second largest trading partner, which would be economically huge for America’s potato industry.
National Potato Council CEO Kam Quarles says the draft ruling was written by a justice last week and must now be approved by a majority of the five members …
QUARLES … “Hopefully, the remaining, the other justices will agree with the one who wrote this opinion and it’s just another step in normalizing relations with Mexico. That’s such a, as you said, they’re a vital trading partner.”

U.S. Fresh Potatoes to Mexico Pt 2 - AG INFORMATION NETWORK OF THE WEST

U.S. Fresh Potatoes to Mexico Pt 2
Tuesday Feb 23rd, 2021
I’m Bob Larson. U.S. fresh potato producers will be watching closely tomorrow when the Mexico Supreme Court votes on a draft ruling that could open the door for our industry.
National Potato Council CEO Kam Quarles says Mexico does allow fresh potatoes into a limited area, but that only covers roughly 26 kilometers from the U.S.-Mexico border …
QUARLES … “There’s no scientific reason why that 26-kilometer area exists. It was really a way for, I think, the officials at the time to say, we’re dealing with this very difficult trade issue with the United States, but we’re also protecting our industry from the competition they fear.”
