name, the number is 218. you see jeffries with democrats is going to be short of that. mccarthy with 20 defections is well short of that. so here's what mccarthy, he started to use a number last night. the numbers was 11. look at it this way. he needs to get past jeffries in the vote. so it he adds 11, he would be at 213. jeffries would stay at 212. that means he has to get 11 of the 20 who voted for jordan, he would need to get the 11 from there. that would leave 9 others. that's where this voting present, abstaining becomes key. if he got 11, that's a huge if, but if he got 11 and goot the lead, the other nine continue to vote for jordan, he would still be short of the majority. he needs those nine to all vote present or to all abstain. it you take that nine, they don't count as vote it is they

saying, hey, get through this vote. make sure jeffries doesn't become speaker. but that's the math. 11 republicans voting present and then every democrat continuing to vote for jeffries. this, by the way, the democratic unity on this, that's the other variable, it sounds like an easy thing. this is the first time in more than a decade you had a speaker vote where every democrat has been present and every democrat has been voting for the democratic candidate for speaker. you haven't seen a couple democrats voting present, abstaining, casting symbolic votes for others. and that's crucial to the map that democrats continue to do this from their standpoint. that they all show up, stay in the chamber and vote for jeffries. because if even a handful of democrats get fed up with this for whatever reason and start voting present or start leaving the chamber, again, it has that same effect of lowering the threshold and gives mccarthy more wiggle room.

texas, that meant five republicans had voted for somebody other than kevin mccarthy, and just mathematically at that point, as long as every democrat votes for hakeem jeffries and he again finishes with 212, there is no way, even when you get into scenarios involving people voting present or abstaining, there is no way for kevin mccarthy to win on this ballot. so sixth ballot, kevin mccarthy, barring something totally unforeseen and frankly inconceivable at this point, is going to go down to defeat again, and not only that, the pattern is holding here, where it is not like you're seeing a couple of names, and anybody peeling off here, you're seeing the exact same form. we haven't seen any of the -- the one name that we were talking about -- >> ken buck. >> i was going to bring it up. >> quen buck. now, he did this -- ken buck. now he did this on the last vote too, they came out to his name, and he didn't call a preference and then at the end, they will loop around, about 15 did this

appeal to republicans to vote for mccarthy. you've got a couple folks here who voted for jordan on the first ballot who are not switching to mccarthy. they're sticking with jordan so the only thing at this point that could save mccarthy is a very, very unlikely scenario where suddenly, all these other republicans start voting present or start abstaining and then the denominator comes down low enough. the math basically, it's already all be impossible to see mccarthy getting there on this second ballot. just from right away, he made no progress with this. matt gaetz already announced he's with jim jordan. the number of defections, it took five minutes there and they blew well past five. we're into territory, we said at this point in the first ballot, we can't see mccarthy getting there. >> we're communicating and

know how well coordinated this option to mccarthy is. and if too many republicans end up voting present or abstaining on future ballots, let's say that 16 republicans abstained or voted present, now you'd have 418 total votes. the magic number would be 210. you would then be in territory where hakeem jeffries getting 212 democratic votes could end up with a majority. that's a very farfetched scenario, but it gets to when you move to a second ballot, a lot of things come into play. a lot of possibilities come into play. i think you have to say one of the variables here is how well coordinated is this opposition to mccarthy? how far are they willing to push it. the math i'm just laying out here is everybody fully aware of that? is everybody fully aware on the

rosen dale. these are all defections i'm marking off here. these are all defections we have seen so far. andy harris voted for lee cel don. so if the move from healthcare car thi's folks after this first vote is concluded is to move immediately into a second vote, they would obviously hope some of these republicans who voted for other names just get persuaded and vote for mccarthy. that would be their ideal situation. the other possibility, the other thing i think they would hope for is if some of these names say like an a day harris, instead of voting for somebody else by name if they just started voting present, because that does change the math. anybody voting present or abstaining changes the magic number. there are 434 members-elect who are this voting.
